THIS is why I will NEVER side with MLB owners....

...And you know, the Marlins did not invent this nor more than likely, not the only team doing this!!:rant::rant:

What we have long suspected hardened as truth Monday when leaked financial documents left little doubt that Loria has profited big from years of spending too little on the product he presents to fans.

Now we know why the club fought so hard to keep its finances a secret even as the city and county wanted full disclosure during negotiations for its new stadium. It's because what you see when the curtain is thrown open and the light pours in is an owner who could have spent much more on players and still made money.

What you see is a ball club that was crying poverty with pockets full.

The website Deadspin.com reported detailed ``consolidated balance sheets'' of five teams, including the Marlins, and it reveals that in 2008 and '09 the Marlins had a combined operating income of some $49 million, with a net operating income -- a true, bottom-line profit -- of $33.4 million those two years.

Is it any wonder Major League Baseball publicly admonished the Marlins before this season to increase its player payroll? Now we know why. If only they did it sooner.

Marlins president David Samson hopped on a conference call to do some damage control Monday. He can spin with the best of them, but he was overwhelmed by facts.

I thought it telling that his opening statement was to huff and puff against the unknown ``criminal'' who leaked the documents. (Always love teams hiding behind the private-company shield while accepting millions in public money to build a new stadium.)

Samson scrambled, reworking the company line to jibe with the leaked documents. He has spent years claiming the payroll was low because revenue was low -- blaming the club not being profitable. Now we know revenue was high enough to make a handsome profit. So he said Monday payrolls were low to help fund the new park.

Hmm. Apparently MLB didn't buy that and is telling the club to spend more.

You begin to think of the what-ifs entailed in ``what if the Marlins spent as much as they could have all this time rather than clipping coupons?''

One major answer is that Miguel Cabrera would not have been shipped to Detroit in a cost-cutting move before the 2008 season. The Marlins had the money to sign Cabrera long-term without ending in the fiscal red. The prized slugger should still be here. His .341 average, 31 homers and 101 RBI should be in the heart of this batting order right now, helping the Marlins make the playoffs.

Samson said, ``We could have had Cabrera and no ballpark.''

Hmm, again. The net profit in 2008 was some $37.8 million -- largely because they jettisoned Cabrera's salary. That was not money toward the new park. That was profit.

Another answer to what-if is the club could have spent enough last offseason to shore up the bullpen and give itself a realistic chance at the playoffs.

You know how much the Marlins received from revenue sharing alone in 2008-09? About $92 million. Low-revenue teams are supposed to spend that to better compete. The Marlins not doing that is what led to the public admonishment that forced the payroll increase from the second-lowest of 30 teams to what still is in the bottom five.

Pittsburgh has a beautiful new stadium, and that hasn't helped them out of their mess. A new stadium is no guarantee of anything. Ask the Mets.

The METS overpriced themselves while trying to c of onvince themselves and the city of New York that they had a World Series contender. The overpaid alot of players and they are paying for it.

The Pirates are different. But look at Milwaukee, they have done better since they

I figure that IF the REDS can continue on the very competitive ways for the next couple of years, I see them going the same route the Brewers went. The Orioles use to fill that stadium....when they one. When you build it and win, they will come.

The Mets situation is WAY more complicated than that. It cannot be neatly summed up in two sentences.

No, it does not guarantee winning, but it should guarentee more money to help improve the product on the field, which, if done right, will lead to winning. And now with this report, it clearly states that some of the low end markets ARE making money, but instead of the going into improving their product, it's improving owners bank accounts.

Making money sure, but not a ton of money. Sorry but 35million is chump change in the grand scheme of things. Thats not even enough to cover say A-Rod in the height of his contract. If they bought a player like him now they have 0 profit. Not good business sense now is it?

First of all, if you are saying A-Rod makes $35 million/year, that is far from the truth. Second of all, A-Rod is not the only player available to spend money on. With good management you can improve your team greatly with $35 million, but some owners choose not to.

Yes the Marlins choose not to spend ALL there money. They are in this business to make money.

35million could get you maybe 2 stars maybe three. But then you are broke. No more profit. What happens next year if ticket sales are down? Now your even deeper in the hole.

The marlins were according to ESPN, #25 in player salaries in 2009. But they came in second place in the NL East. Ahead of the Braves (15th in salary) The Mets (5th in Salary) and the Nationals (22nd in salary) Not to mention Better records then the Cubs (3rd in salary), etc.

So it seems to me even though they kept a little money they still did better then teams who spent more then them.

Sure they could spend another 15-20 million and get 2 more good players, and it may even make them win the NL East. But I cant really be that mad at them for taking there profit this year. Who knows maybe they are building a war chest to buy another world series?

Well of course, you have to make good baseball decisions. That is where the Marlins have failed.

They could own that roster you just posted and still keep the 30million by getting rid of people who are not as good as the new comers.

BUT, if you tell your fans that they cannot spend on free agents because you are LOSING money, then hell ya, you have been lied to! They stated that they were saving for stadium cost AFTER THE FACT. IF they had stated that from day one, there isn't a single Marlins fan that would not have sided with them. IF you get a chance, LISTEN to the at interview from the link I posted from 790 The Ticket's interview with team president Sampson.

You will hear more back peddling and "rope-adoping" than Ali vs. Frazer.

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that.

Since it was already "paid" for, I spent the two hours of my time watching the John Cena action movie on Apple TV, "Matchbox The Movie" even though the reviews were brutal. It was better than I expected, so I didn't feel like I had wasted an afternoon watching it. But it felt like another "Reacher"/"Neghley"/"Mission: Impossible"/"Fast & Furious" crash and blow stuff up with lots of automatic gunfire mixed in movie featuring covert CIA operatives.

I don't think we'll get a follow-up movie from this. I expect Mattel will have other toy lines to exploit.

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

West Palm Beach is getting it on WTCN-CD/43 MNT. Still nothing for Fort Myers

Also, the Thunder's deal for KSBI/52 OKC and KQCW/19 Tulsa will be via a special cable and DIRECTV only feed of those stations. OTA viewers and Dish customers will be limited to 10 games.

It's only available for streaming customers, they still haven't added that batch of CW stations to satellite.

Even if it was, satellite customers still can't stream their CW affiliates via the app, just the Big 4, select PBS stations and some independents (mainly the ones that have full season NHL/NBA rights)
