Windows Media Center

Looking for info on whether its worthwhile to try setting up Windows Media Center 7 with satellite? I am about to cut the cable cord. I can get 90% of the channels i watch regularly on my antenna. I can get most of the rest from Hulu or channel websites.

My wife watches a quilting show on BYU tv that i see is available fta. I am trying to find out if this will have any level of WAF or am i going to be disappointed. I already have the media center set up and having been using it for quite a while. I was going to invest $400 in a quad CableCard tuner from Ceton, but i will only be adding 2 or 3 channels in HD. I have an old skystar tuner i played around with once long ago.

I dont care to blind scan and have all sorts of channels showing up that have to be maintained. I'd rather input the few channels we'd watch and let it handle the recording.

Any pointers or experience with it around?

Just note that not every PC satellite tuner works with Media Center. I don't have experience with that, just saw a thread below:

Do you have a satellite dish and LNB yet? Make sure to check out the FTA FAQ's to make sure you get the right kind of equipment needed to receive FTA channels.

Make sure the tuner card you get is compatible with your version of Windows 7 (32bit or 64bit). I am working on revamping my home theater PC to be something very similar to what you are talking about.

I currently use Window Media Center (MC) and also have launcher buttons within MC that launch Boxee and Hulu Desktop. Those are both used for internet TV. I have done some investigating and found some good sources for internet TV (Boxee pulls content from many of the sources in the toptenreviews):

My hopes are that I can use MC to handle my OTA and FTA tuners, and Boxee and/or Zinc and/or Hulu Desktop to handle internet TV content. I haven't tried Zinc yet, but I do know that Boxee will handle local media as well as internet TV, so I think that anything I record using MC, I can view using Boxee (in order to reduce the number of media centers being used by the user). Boxee's Netflix interface isn't as nice as Windows MC, but it is fairly new and I expect it to improve. Unfortunately, Hulu has blocked Boxee from pulling Hulu content onto your Boxee MC b/c they want you to use their Hulu MC (which only pulls content from one source - Hulu.com).

I would really like to see a program that adds all my channels (OTA, FTA, and internet TV) into one EPG, but I haven't been able to find such a comprehensive program.

All DMA's now Western Arc

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

Even if you are broadcasting old SD-only shows, I would think advertisers would still want their commercials to look good.

Advertisers on SD channels are probably Far and Few, very hard to find, they have very few viewers to watch them.

I watch mostly SD channels (H&I, Start and ION, etc.). There are plenty of advertisers, this time of the year it is mostly Medicare Advantage plans, auto extended warranties and the occasional walk-in-tub. They know who is watching.

Because he didn't have a fleet of reusable rockets. Starlink works because SpaceX is able to launch hundreds (thousands?) of their Starlink satellites for what a single geostationary Internet satellite costs to build and launch on a disposable launcher.

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Also watched part 2 about a week or so ago after rewatching part 1. It's not as faithful to the book as I was hoping for. Part 1 stayed fairly faithful to the novel, but part 2 took some liberties that I felt were rather excessively non-novel. It looks like a prequel series will happen before part 3. My issue is: there's no prequel that was written as a novel, so what will it be pulled from? Or will it just be "based loosely" on the novel?

There is a bunch of other Dune written by Kevin J Anderson and Brian Herbert (Franks son). I think the series in production is taken from one of their books about the Bene Gesserit.

Correct. I've read all of them (yes, it took awhile, better part of a year, in my spare time). And they can't really consider or classify a series about the Bene Gesserit as a prequel. Sure, I suppose they can call it that, if they want to, because it begins before the time of Paul Atredies, but it's still a stretch. It's a Dune-related novel, not a prequel as we generally think of prequels...
