well my neighbor and I began putting up my new 4' fortec offset dish on my roof. we bolted it on to the roof securely. the pitch is pretty steep so i had to place 3" piece of wood under the lower two legs. when i check the pole before slipping the dish down it, the pole is straight vertically, when the dish goes on it with the SG380 motor, the pole ends up about 1/8" crooked! I guess from weight of the dish? anyways we can't get any sat when we move the dish towards 72 and 74W I don't get anything via the meter...shouldn't my elevation be 42.1? should we aim the dish at my true south which I think is 180.9 or magnetic south 194.6, oh by the way my location is 41.4 latitude, longitude is 73.4 (CT)...if I can't straighten the pole , can I compensate the elevation of the dish? BTW...I will using a KU LNB to aim the dish and plan to later attach a C-Band lnb with conical scaler in the center and move the KU band to the side on a sidecar. thanks much!

No I didn't have the LNB and Rec cables crossed up but I did have the Sat In line connected to the Ant In and not to the LNB In on the back if my Fortec receiver! What a dope! So I fixed that blunder and the motor is working fine now!
So we finally found stuff from 72W (my true south) or 0 position but still need to fine tune because when I travel any distance to the west and east and try the sats I should be getting...once I get past 87W the reception is sketchy. Reduced signal strength or not getting chs. at all. Plus I know my motor latitude or dish elevation is off because when i scanned 103W I get BVN from 101W, there are other such occurances. So I loose some of the clark belt when the dish moves and rotates! After I get the KU LNB good, we plan on trying the KU/C Band combo LNB (CK1) and compare KU reception. If I don't loose much I'll stick with the combo. If not, I'll try the sidecar LNB attachment, with combo lnb in center(only using the C band though) and KU off center on the sidecar. Will let you know what I end up doing and the success with it.
BTW, the dish seems very solid and dish motor quite vertical so far.

Dfecarter,

Sometimes such errors can be easier to make than you think. I have an AZBox Premium and an AZBox Premium PLUS. The tuners in each are different in several ways, but one of the more misleading differences is that the IF IN and the LOOP OUT connectors on the tuners have been swapped in position. If I get in a hurry and forget which receiver I am hooking up, it is easy to err and reverse the cable connection. It does no harm, but if you are sleepy or maybe imbibing a little in the spirits, it can leave you scratching your head for a moment. :) Ha Ha.

It is good that you figured out the error. Don't feel bad about a silly mistake, just make sure that you learn from it. That is almost inevitable - learning from our mistakes. It seems that you learn so much more when you do things wrong then you do if you have perfect instructions to do things right.

Yes, you will need to expend some time and thought to get it set perfectly. Just remember one little rule... Don't try to be too perfect, or too greedy with the signal quality on any particular satellite. Many people make the mistake of trying to peak the signal on every satellite they drive the dish to. This is the wrong approach. Setting up your motorized dish to track the arc is a calibration process. In such a process, you have to go back and forth between several points and make small adjustments to "merely improve" the signal quality at each point, a little at a time.

A good example is a three-point calibration process. Point #1 would be your true south sat. Points #2 and #3 would be the furthest west and the furthest eat satellite that you can get a signal from. Once you get all three points optimized, then you expand your horizon, literally! Then you pick two new east and west satellites further east and west from the first two and re-optimize your signal quality between all three points again. You keep advancing and expanding your total horizon until you cover the whole sky.

It sounds like a slow and tedious process, but it is much faster and more accurate than doing it any other way. Once you develop a feel for it, it will simply just click for you without even thinking about it. Have you ever watched Bob Ross paint on PBS? See how easy and relaxed he is and how beautiful his paintings turn out? It is the same thing for aligning your motorized dish.

Incorporating C and Ku band on the same dish, a small dish or "mini-bud" will prove to be a challenge. Fairly easy with a fixed point dish, but not so much with a motorized dish meant for Ku-Band. It is a fun project, but don't expect too much. It is more for the fun and the learning experience.

I am eager to hear of your future progress! I hope you have a lot of fun with this, now that your motor is functioning properly.

My last words of wisdom... Always keep in mind that this is a hobby, and not a job or a demand upon you. You will enjoy it a lot more if you treat it as such. You'll keep your hair and your wife as well! Ha Ha! :)

Radar I truly appreciate your ideas, time and encouragement!
Well after work today my neighbor and I spent about 90 mins working on things and are a bit frustrated at a couple of issues that have become evident.
Firstly, my once nicely vertical pole is now off by about 3 deg., we estimate. Caused most likely by the weight of the 48" dish/motor. As a result my neighbor dropped my motor elevation from 41 to about 36 deg. - his theory to compensate for the pole leaning slightly. He's got my dish set to about 27 deg. My concern is that i have heard that regardless of any adjustments made, if the pole isn't 100% straight, the set up will always be off. Does anyone have any viewpoints or anecdotal experiences to share.
Also, I bought a brand new powertech SG380 motor for up to a 1.2m dish from Sadoun and it does not appear to be functioning correctly. It won't move the dish to sats beyond 97w and makes a loud clicking and sometimes whining sound as if it's struggling to move the dish. It's response to my commands through the receiver are unreliable and erratic. These 2 issues are now preventing us from progressing with this project! I will call Sadoun tomorrow and perhaps try my old SG2100 smaller motor which always performed well in the past. And take a look at the pole while I have the motor off. Still going slow as far as fine tuning signals to best get the clark belt sats...

When installing a motor, your mast MUST be absolutely and perfectly vertically plumb all the way around. If it is offset even just a sliver, you will throw all your other alignments out of whack. All of the other angles (motor latitude, dish elevation and even the whole assembly's azimuth angle) rely upon the mast being perfectly set.

If you were installing a single, fixed point dish to aim at one (or even two or three satellites) only, you can fudge this to a point because it would be a one time correction. However, with a positioner or motor, you would need to correct the angle for the entire arc at every point on the arc. It is enough trouble and frustration to get the arc to track properly when things are all correct, so you don't want to add a stick of dynamite to the equation. My advice is to reset your mast so that it is plumb and vertical and sturdy enough to never change even if an elephant rubs his butt on it!

Also, I bought a brand new powertech SG380 motor for up to a 1.2m dish from Sadoun and it does not appear to be functioning correctly. That does not sound good for a DG-380 motor. They are generally so quiet and smooth that you cannot tell that they are moving even when standing close by. It will be best to contact Jamal Sadoun and get that taken care of.

you are correct and your neighbour is WRONG!

your motors latitude scale must ALWAYS be set to YOUR LATITUDE.....NEVER change this adjustment for any reason whatsoever....

i will re-quote MYSELF from a previous statement i made in this thread....you seem to want advice but then you dont want to follow it....

"your mounting post and motor assembly must be 100% level at ALL TIMES.....you can not compensate for this with dish or motor adjustments....if they are not 100% level then anything you do past this point will just be a big huge waste of time....trust me ive been there and done that....and i do mean 100% level and not one degree off....

a well mounted post should easily be able to support your entire body weight without moving....it is not just the weight of the dish and motor.....the post is also supporting against wind resistance.....and with a dish that size the wind force can be very strong....."

Well I haven't had much time lately to play around with the aforementioned project but today my neighbor and I did spend a good 5 hours on it. We froze and got pretty frustrated Well to make a long story, full of back and forths as far as progress goes...we pretty much manage to get the KU band in on most fo my available sats from 61w-123w. We seemed to have gotten the dish motor (on the sides) level and most of the available transponders were coming in at from 30-60% sig quality.
Then as it was ge3tting dark and mightly cold...we removed the kU LNB and replaced it with a CK1LNBF with a switch, powered by a Fortec Mercury rec. and moved by a BDG380 Powertwch motor, installed on a 1.2M off set dish.
Well after putting on the LNB KU/B Band combo...can only get 1 C'Band ch. and that was STO on 121W!
Can someone please tell me the following settings for my equipment...In my FOrtec Mercury rec. to scan for KU and C LNB...
what LNB type? (had been using LNB 10750 for my KU Band LNC)
Do I keep the 0/22Khz on or off?
Switch? (choices are DiSEqC 1.0 and 1.1
Input LMB1,2,3 or4?
Port?
Thanks very much! Any help will be appreciated!

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

My wife mentioned that her remote is acting strange this morning. She hit FF and it went to 15x FF.

Agreed, it mostly regurgitates known solutions. That's the point. Nobody needs an innovative fix for a driver error or a creative way to format a report. Let it handle the solved problems so people can spend their time on the ones that aren't.

Addressed by what you didn't quote. This cycle is as old as computing: compilers, libraries, frameworks each automated the tedious part, and the human work moved up a level. Innovation didn't end; it shifted. And people still make new compilers, libraries or frameworks.

Nobody's forced to hand anything off. Anyone who wants to keep doing it by hand still can, and people who couldn't do it at all now can.

Misapplication isn't something that the casual coder can identify. They can only discover, the hard way, that it doesn't work at some point.

Been reading this thread but not commenting much, primarily because there is so much "news" out there on this topic and it is hard to tell what is real and what is theater.
My biggest problem with AI is that these agents are taught...not necessarily programmed but taught. Well, there's an old saying "garbage in/garbage out". I remember a Joe Rogan show a while back when he had Elon Musk on and they talked about AI and Elon said one of the AIs (can't remember which one, sorry) was asked which was worse, Thermonuclear War or mis-gendering Kaitlyn Jenner and it came back with the answer that mis-gendering was worse. Now forget the politics involved with all the gender stuff we have been subjected to the past few years.....to say that mis-gendering is worse than the killing of hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of human beings.....Kaitlyn Jenner included.....is simply insane not to mention incredibly dangerous.

Agents need appropriate context to make what would be understood as the correct read in a situation like that, and that Gemini answer was a clear miss on that front.

That said, we've also seen Musk (and/or his team) put his thumb on the scale (or just release a very poor product) with his own deployed AI since:

In the end, it's all a tool. Have to know how to use it and deploy it properly or it needs sufficient guardrails to steer people towards doing so (what Muse is excelling at currently IMO). I'm routinely interacting with several agents a day operating various processes locally and in services I use, and there are numerous others silently spun up to perform actions or satisfy requests from my prompts.

Related to earlier discussion in the thread on leveraging local inference: this kind of analysis happening behind the scenes is something everyone will have built into Windows, IMO. Most people won't see all of this, just the results, unless they want to dig into how the fix was chosen. Stuff like this will be standard as agents get local system access baked in, and more of the inference itself moves on-device.

Did you accidentally get on the wrong plan ?
I still do the once a year plans.

I tried to do that, when I did delivery driver work (2010- 2013), we had a fleet of Freightliners. The newer trucks had headunits that were satellite compatible (XM only I think), but lacked the antenna and guts. I got a car kt for my old Roady XT and tried to use it, but at the volume levels I needed have it at to hear it over the diesel engine it sounded like crap, so I used my phone with an aux cable. When I was in the middle of nowhere with no cell service it didn't do me any good though.

At my current job, one of our new cars has the free trial of SXM active, I frequently have to go off site to a location 75 miles away in a rural area and it's nice being able to use the service off of the satellites versus using the app. There are many places on this journey where all three providers lack service.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Yes, many have hacked a DirecTV or Dish Network dish before. Quite undersized, but would receive the 97w KU stations with an LNBF swap. Make a template to set the LNBF face angle and distance from the reflector. Remove the current circular polarity LNBFs and make a bracket to hold the replacement linear LNBF in the correct centered position. Remember to set the polarity skew.

would probably also work well for NHK on 101W and possibly for PBS on 99W. I used one for a while on 30W. Just keep in mind that because it's undersized for those satellites, it might work fine in clear weather but won't have much margin to account for signal degradation during rain/snow

If you can find one, the Shaw / Star Choice 75e ellipticals are great for use on 97, 99, and 101W. They are really just rebranded ChannelMaster 75 cm reflectors and use linear LNBFs by default out of the box.

Everyone else's mileage may vary.

I have read that some have converted this type dish but after giving it a good look, it's the lnb conversion that is the bottleneck. Does anyone have a picture of their attempt to configure the lnb? I watched a video on youtube from the save it for parts guy and he used duct tape! Guess it worked but I'm thinking something a bit more permanent!
Thanks to all for your interest and replies...

Many of us have used a universal LNBF mount (or get creative with L brackets and plumbers tape - perforated metal strapping). Use a few inches of aluminum tube (or a piece of 1x2" lumber) to extend the support arm (replacing the plastic mount used by DirecTV and Dish) to place the LNBF throat opening at the correct distance from the reflector, the correct height and at the correct angle. Nothing magical... simply place the new linear LNBF in the center at the same distance, height and angle as the current combo.
