Hi guys,

Question. I'm desperate to get those big dishes up so I asked my dad to help me with this as it's not something I can do alone.

Here's what I am trying to put up.

  • 10' aluminum mesh Cband dish
  • 6' solid steel Cband dish (the $70 special from a few months back)

I'm trying to figure out how long the poles need to be.

The 10' dish. I'm figuring it like this. There is like 5' from the center of the dish to the edge. And I need it to be at least 2' off the ground so I can mow beneath it with at least a push mower. So that means I need 7' of pole above the ground to get that clearance. Right? So then there is the problem of below ground. I'm thinking that 5' of pole in the ground with an 18" hole full of cement is just barely going to be enough, considering we get a lot of hurricanes here. We've had some BAD hurricanes too.

My dad tells me that a 12' pole is all he can carry in his van.

Do you think 5' of pole in the ground is enough to hold up a 10' dish?

Then there is the 6' dish. Center to edge is three feet. Add two feet of moving clearance and that's 5' needed above ground. My dad says he can turn down a short piece of pipe to fit the odd size fitting then slip that into a larger pipe and weld it in place. So if he puts an 18" extension in the main pipe that would mean I would only need like 4' of it sticking out of the ground then the turned down extension would give me enough to exceed the 2' of ground clearance.

BUT, how much to put in the ground? Would say, 4' of pipe in the ground with an 18" hole full of cement be enough? Being that the thing is solid, it's going the be a bigger problem with wind, strong storms and hurricanes. But my feeling on it is, it's flimsy, I bent it up pretty good trying to put it together and the first hurricane we get, it will be curb material, IE trashed.

I'm thinking that an 8' pipe would be enough for the smaller dish, 4' in the ground, 4' out and the 18" extension would give me 5' out of the ground.

So if we bought a 12' by 3 1/2 pole and an 8' by 3 1/2 pole, would that get it done right?

Also, how do you figure out how much cement to buy? I know it's going to be a LOT but I don't want to over buy or under buy the stuff, I want to get as close to the right amount as possible with as little waste as possible. I'm sure there's some nifty math trick to figure it out but I'm horrible at math, even basic math gives me grief..

Thank a million! :)

Stop feeling sorry for yourself. It's winter and b4 long spring will come to S TX. Then you can deal w/ it. You are looking at the dark side of thing right now and things will change. Get someone to dig the hole for you using an auger that you can rent from a local rental store. When it is time to pole in the ground then put some pebble rocks in the bottom for drainage to keep the bottom of the pole for rusting out as quickly. Then shove the pole into the hole. Surely you can find someone that will do that for you. OK at this point don't bother w/mixing the concrete in the bottom of the hole. Just pour in a couple of bags of the ready mix dry to center it and tamp it down with some kind of rod. That will allow you to center the pole and plumb it up. Then fill the rest of the hole w/ the mixed concrete mix. The dry ready mix (pour some water on top of it) will pull the moisture out of the ground and harden over time. The fill up the rest of the hole w/ the concrete. Assemble dish put it's mount on it. Then with 1 or 2 friends stand it on it's edge and slip the mount onto the pole which should be shorter that the center point of the dish. That is all of the hardest parts.

Dee,

This is a really excellent thread for (not only your benefit in your personal project at hand here) but it is great information for "newbies" to the FTA hobby! They can read, first hand and step-by-step, how the process proceeds or doesn't proceed - due to weather and the elements or the availability of the "right" pieces that are required that you need to hunt and scrounge for. It is a perfect example for a DIY FTA project! It is also a great example of how we, as a group, come together for assistance of others.

This thread points out many of the hurdles that a person must contend with in order to play with this hobby. I was going to point out that us northerners were really eager to see you get your base foundation (the hole digging and post setting activities) accomplished because we cannot dig our own up here. The ground is covered in feet of snow and the ground is frozen. So we are kinda restricted by mother nature. However, I forgot that your backyard flooded and then turned to ice! Uuuugggghhh! You are not going to be out there chipping ice with a railroad pickaxe! I wouldn't either as that would be too extreme. It isn't worth that much effort. I've done a lot of crazy dish projects in the middle of winter, but I am NOT going to dig a hole through ice and snow and a few feet of frozen ground while it is snowing and blowing snow in 30 mph wind and colder than 15°F! I will wait til spring and 75°F and dry, sunny days.

This does bring me to state one thing. For me and many northerners, we use the time when mother nature doesn't work well for us (i.e. winter) to plan out our warm weather projects, to research data, ideas and scrounge for equipment. Anything that we can do inside - where it is warm. So don't feel discouraged because you cannot tackle specific elements of your project due to the weather issues, just take it as a blessing to be able to refine and double-check your plans and equipment lists. Maybe work on a few of the used components inside to clean them up and lubricate them - refurbish them so that they are truly ready to go! Take advantage of the time available for the appropriate part of the project.

One word of caution for you specifically, Dee. You mention a few times about turning down a pipe to fit the dish mount (to make the mast diameter acceptable to the mount of the dish itself). Be very aware of some pitfalls in doing this. First of all, many pipes are not that thick walled and turning them down on a lathe may really take away too much from the physical strength of the structure of the pipe, this is an obvious concern right off. It may become too thin to support the dish. You don't want to take away too much of that "meat". Secondly, many metal pipes are treated or coated (i.e galvanized piping) to prevent oxidation or rust. If you turn that pipe down, you remove that protective layer as it is very thin and only part of the very top exterior surface of the metal. This opens your metal mast up to the extremes of degradation in regards to rusting, which will weaken it moreso over time. There may be better methods to address this and I would take this time to research them. It is always best to use the right piece for the job and NOT modifiy it to make it fit by taking away from it.

Another item, about your backyard flooding often and standing with water. I assume that this is due to rain most often. I have riverfront property so when I think of my backyard flooding, I am envisioning much more than 2"-5" of standing water. I am thinking of 2 feet to 5 feet or possibly more of running water with tree limbs and other debris! Maybe even huge chunks of ice as big as a small bus! So, my impression (the visual picture in my mind) might be different from what your backyard truly looks like when you describe it as flooded. However, if you have consistent trouble with this issue, even if it is only a few inches in depth, you might consider doing something to help your yard drain better so that the water does not stand there for a long time. One idea that you can apply is this...

Locate the lowest point in your backyard, flag the very center of it when the standing water is nearly gone away. A few feet away from that point, at a location that is nearly the same level, but just a little higher, have someone auger a two foot diameter hole, down into the soil as far as they can. Then, backfill that hole with coarse rock and gravel. If you can get the hole deep enough to access more porous soil underneath the clay topsoil, the hole will provide a drain so that water will not stand so long in your yard. The rock and gravel will be a "strainer" like that in your bathtub to keep the drain open the longest over time. Sincerely, you can drain a lot of water this way. Research this if you plan to do anything like this so that you know how to lay the rock, gravel and sand in proper layers to keep the drain open over a long time. Sediment will eventually clog this drain, so you want to set it up the best way to keep it open the longest without too much maintenance.

Oh, you might question why I stated to auger the hole at a location higher than the lowest point. Most sediment and debris (grass clippings, tree leaves, etc) will collect at the lowest point moreso eventually and predominately thus, keeping the "drain area" from getting clogged. You can clean the "lowest" area with a rake after the water recedes completely. Less of that debris will float to your "drain" and collect there. This will extend the life of the drain.

OK, that last paragraph had very little to do with FTA satellite information, normally. But, you seem to have a unique problem with the drainage of your yard where you are desiring to install all your dishes. I recall one of your posts where your older dishes were standing on a smidgeon of land as an island in the middle of your back yard and you had to wade to get to them. You don't want that to be the future for all your backyard projects, FTA or other. So, this is my idea for you, if you think that the water drainage in your backyard is too much of a nuissance to put up with. This is a fairly cheap fix for this problem without having to install some sort of a pump to drain it. It is a passive and natural drainage system that works with as little effort or assistance from you. Just an idea that I wanted to relay to you. There are other methods to drain your water away that might be much more efficient and "long-lived", but they are also much more expensive. This simple "drain hole in the ground" is a really inexpensive and quick & dirty method to get the job done without tearing up and relandscaping your entire yard. And it can be accomplished in a few hours, if you have it already all planned out.

I hope that everything I have stated is helpful to you, Dee, and also to many others.

The drainage problem she has has to do with the lack there of. She lives in a area that has mostly clay soil so it doesn't absorb well.

Watch,

You obviously missed my point.

That is precisely the reason I presented the idea. If there is a possibility to reach below the surfuce (top layers of clay to a more "porous layer of earth) then this drain idea of mine will work.
So, you have to auger a hole down to that more porous substrate and install a channel to direct the surface water there. This simple procedure works, when the top soil is clay and everyone knws that clay soil does not drain well or at all. But, if you can find a more porous soil below that clay, like sand or gravel, and you can keep that channel open, the water will drain away, rather than having to wait for it to evaporate. It all depends upon how deep the clay goes. Clay is an excellent sealant that holds water on top and you have to get through that layer to drain the water to lower and different layers of soil to allow it (the water) to drain down.

It is just something for Dee to look into to determine if it is worthwhile.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

I don't know why DISH doesn't just start a streaming version of DISH and then if you can't see the western arc you go with streaming versions and then they could keep customers if they had good internet speeds. I mean Sling TV could be changed to Streaming DISH TV if they wanted since both companies are under Echostar. Then you would still be able to use your ota antenna with Air TV devices like I do with Air TV Anywhere with 4 ota tuners.

Because he didn't have a fleet of reusable rockets. Starlink works because SpaceX is able to launch hundreds (thousands?) of their Starlink satellites for what a single geostationary Internet satellite costs to build and launch on a disposable launcher.

Love this guy's channel. Looks like Walmart has thrown in the towel when it comes to conventional car batteries.

I bought a new AGM battery from Walmart about a year ago, it is already needing replacing. I thought about just buying a regular battery but from what I've read, that might not be a smart move. Might check my Forscan program and see if I can change the battery type from AGM.

When you need a battery, you need a battery.

If you can wait, new technologies are on the not-too-distant horizon.

You're probably doing something wrong if you're only getting a year out of an AGM battery. Heat and infrequent charging both significantly reduce lifetime.

Huh? How can I be doing something wrong.....I took out the original battery, that was 6 yrs old and put in a new one.....kinda hard to screw that up. I figure it was just a bad battery....it happens.

The biggest takeaway I got from this video was the Walmart batteries only had something like 85% of battery life left even though they were brand NEW. The ones from O'Reilly all tested 100% of life left.

He sounds like he's trying to sell me a pocket hose.

I just had to replace a car battery this week and thought I'd look into LiFePo4. Amazon has plenty of them, but all have top posts and only one 'also' has side connections (Group 75).Then I read that they're really lousy in the cold. So, an AGM, but again, almost nothing with side terminals instead of top. In researching that, I read that most mfrs in recent years have dropped side terminals and gone back to the old top posts, which is surprising to me since those are more corrosion-prone, cause the battery to need more space and are generally more hazardous. Finally I just threw up my hands and bought a regular lead-acid at Sam's Club. They had a Group 75 "Duracell" with side terminals only. It was virtually the only such battery with side posts on their shelves

Had a Die Hard in my folks cellar for over 6 years. Pulled it out, slapped it on a charger for a day. Put it in my 'Cuda and drove it around for a week of my vacation. Next year, the same. But my dad kept it topped off for me.It was a mid 80's battery in early 1990.

Flooded acid batteries like a float voltage of around 13.5-13.8 voltage.
AGM needs a float of 14.2 volts. So if you slap an AGM in where a flooded was. It never gets a full charge.
"Why do they die so fast?" Question answered. There are folks who sell voltage regulators for alternators that are designed to boost float voltage for AGM batteries.
The other way around? Flooded will gas-off a little at 14.2 volts. But seems to tolerate it pretty good.

Lithium car/bike/atv batteries. After 3 batteries in my Harley. The OEM flooded and two AGM's (before the 14.2 volt float requirement to let them live was learned). I bought a lithium for it. 4 year, no gripe warranty after having it tested by an approved store.
The thing started like Thor himself sent a bolt from the sky. Except......try to start it around freezing? Nope. Needed a heating pad.
And I usually like to park it around events in the evening with the parking light on. Looks cool like that.
We could traipse around for a few hours no worries. Hop on, fire it up, and go putt around.
Lithium? A Dakota Lithium at least. The BMS shuts it right down if it discharges below <something>.
Come back. Parking lights off. Won't start. And you know the rest. But it lasted 6 years. A lot better than 'new every two'. And the fact that powersports batteries are warranted for six, maybe nine months. Ludicrous.

I called Noco. Asked all of the right questions. Great warranty. Save some bucks ordering directly, faster service that the wally world alternative.
They addressed (or claimed over the phone) that the shut down was addressed. Sure. The BMS keeps it form being damaged. But if it is shut down because it does become low. Shut down any load (key on, parking or headlights left on) for 10-15 minutes and you get a second try to start your rig. Not a bad thing if it really works. Right?!

Exide, Interstate? Be very afraid. They ain't what they used to be. In Florida my '70 Cutlass had an Interstate (early 90') that lasted 6 years until it dropped its plates at an intersection and boiled over. In Florida, mind you. The last Interstate.....done in 2. Guys down there would suck out the acid and put water in shortly before the warranty ran out. Make it to the auto parts, get them tested. And get a new one pro rated. No more pro rating.
You can't beat an Odyssey. Napa, AC Deco (the better ones). Yup.
The mom and pop Car Quest only sells Die Hard. For a reason, the old man says. So they convinced that a Die HArd Platinum was the hot ticket for me. l will see. Stand by!

You can't cut Mr. Project Farm down. He does great tests of all sorts of things. Not sponsored and pressured to slap a little sugar on his comparisons and reviews. Compared to the Brits and Aussies with their constant overzealous and same sounding (Dave from EEVblog) rant. I like P-Farm a lot. Of course I like AvE (Boltr) too.
Reminds me to beware when wearing shorts around the garage vice.

Opinions may vary.

And the Walmart ones mostly had very little warranty.
The days of the 84-month warranty appear long gone, regardless of brand or where you acquired it. Warranties tend to be shorter, with much greater dependence on quick prorating.

The big problem for lead-acid batteries (whether flooded or AGM) is that the US no longer produces lead (the last smelter closed in 2013) and must import it.

Recycling covers a good chunk of the need (~70%), but it isn't free.
EarDemon
I've always got regular OEM Ford Motorcraft batteries from the dealership and have never really had an issue. On my old Lincoln Aviator (the SUV from the early 00s, not the CUV of today), I had some phantom drain and went though a few batteries, but that was an anomaly and with the standard warranty I got free replacements. Taking the Aviator out of the picture, I've bought two batteries in my 24 years of driving. One battery replacement in my Mountaineer, one in my Navigator. But I probably would have had another one had I kept it around longer. Didn't have the Bronco long enough, and so far still on the factory battery for my Expedition.

I run more than the average bear. Dash cam, two radar detectors (yes, I'm aware that can be problematic when using simultaneously), laser jammers and a police scanner. I'm in Buffalo, 90 degree summers and 0 degree winters. Once in a while in the dead of winter I'll get an alert from the Ford app saying remote features have been disabled to conserve battery, but it starts right up.

While the bye can help the top four teams and those the Cartels would like to protect in the playoff, I think the bye is also about making the Cartel championships mean something. One problem with a playoff is it does diminish the conference title a bit.
