  • Growth driven by DIRECTV Latin America's 57% increase in operating profit before depreciation and amortization to $384 million and a 74% increase in operating profit to $219 million.
DIRECTV Diluted Earnings per Share Increases 44% to $0.85
EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- DIRECTV (NASDAQ:DTV) today reported an increase in first quarter 2011 revenues of 13% to $6.32 billion, operating profit before depreciation and amortization1 (OPBDA) of 12% to $1.77 billion and operating profit of 21% to $1.16 billion compared to last year's first quarter. DIRECTV reported that first quarter net income increased 21% to $674 million and diluted earnings per share grew 44% to $0.85 compared with the same period last year.
"Building on the momentum of one of our best years ever, DIRECTV delivered another strong quarter of operating and financial results," said Mike White, president and CEO of DIRECTV. "Record-setting subscriber growth in Latin America and robust customer gains in the U.S. culminated in a nearly two-fold increase in consolidated net additions to 611,000. These industry leading subscriber gains combined with DIRECTV Latin America's 11.7% ARPU growth and margin expansion of 320 basis points, drove double-digit growth in consolidated revenues and operating profit before depreciation and amortization to 13% and 12%, respectively. In addition, the strength and stability of our cash flow continues to create significant value for our shareholders, as the continuation of our share repurchase program along with net income growth of 21% lifted diluted earnings per share by 44% to $0.85 in the quarter."

DIRECTV'S OPERATIONAL REVIEW

First Quarter Review
DIRECTV's first quarter revenues of $6.32 billion increased 13% over the same period last year principally due to strong subscriber and ARPU growth at DIRECTV U.S. and DIRECTV Latin America (DTVLA). Operating profit before depreciation and amortization increased 12% to $1.77 billion and operating profit grew 21% to $1.16 billion primarily due to the gross profit associated with higher revenues partially offset by higher subscriber acquisition costs at DIRECTV U.S. and DTVLA mostly related to higher gross additions. Operating profit was also favorably impacted by lower depreciation and amortization expense at DIRECTV U.S.

Net income attributable to DIRECTV increased 21% to $674 million and diluted earnings per share improved 44% to $0.85 compared with the first quarter of last year primarily due to higher operating profit, share repurchases made over the last twelve months as well as a $25 million pre-tax gain resulting from the sale of a 5% interest in Game Show Network, recorded in "Other, net" on the Consolidated Statements of Operations. These increases were partially offset by higher interest expense principally resulting from an increase in long-term debt. Also impacting the comparison was a $67 million pre-tax gain in the first quarter of 2010 related to the final settlement of the equity collars assumed in the Liberty transaction and a lower effective tax rate in 2011 resulting from previously unrecognized foreign tax credits recorded in the quarter.
Cash flow before interest and taxes2 declined 16% to $899 million and free cash flow3 declined 35% to $665 million compared to the first quarter of 2010 as the higher OPBDA and a $43 million dividend payment from Sky Mexico were more than offset by higher uses of working capital due in part to increased inventory levels at DIRECTV U.S., as well as greater capital expenditures driven by the higher gross additions and increased demand for advanced set-top receivers. Free cash flow was also negatively impacted by the timing and amount of cash interest payments related to an increase in long-term debt, as well as higher cash tax payments.
Also during the quarter but not included in free cash flow, were cash paid for share repurchases of $1.41 billion and proceeds from the sale of a 5% interest in Game Show Network for $60 million. In addition, in March 2011, DIRECTV U.S. completed a $4.0 billion debt financing consisting of $1.5 billion in 3.50% Senior Notes due 2016, $1.5 billion in 5.0% Senior Notes due 2021 and $1.0 billion in 6.375% Senior Notes due 2041. DIRECTV also completed a tender offer in March 2011 for $341 million of 6.375% Senior Notes due 2015.

In the quarter, DIRECTV U.S. revenues increased 8% to $5.15 billion primarily due to strong ARPU growth and the larger subscriber base. ARPU of $88.79 increased 3.9% due to price increases on programming packages and leased boxes, as well as higher advanced service fees. Net additions increased 84% to 184,000 principally due to higher gross additions partially offset by a slightly higher average monthly churn rate of 1.50%. DIRECTV U.S. ended the quarter with 19.41 million subscribers, an increase of 4% over the 18.66 million subscribers reported for the quarter ended March 31, 2010.
First quarter OPBDA increased 4% to $1.36 billion and operating profit increased 14% to $921 million primarily due to gross profit associated with higher revenue partially offset by higher subscriber acquisition costs related to the increase in gross subscriber additions and higher demand for advanced service equipment. Operating profit was also favorably impacted by the completion of amortization for subscriber-related intangible assets as well as lower depreciation expense associated with a reduction in set-top box capital expenditures over the last several years.

DIRECTV Latin America Segment

DIRECTV Latin America (DTVLA) owns approximately 93% of Sky Brazil, 41% of Sky Mexico and 100% of PanAmericana, which covers most of the remaining countries in the region. Sky Mexico, whose results are accounted for as an equity method investment and therefore are not consolidated by DTVLA, had approximately 3.31 million subscribers as of March 31, 2011 bringing the total subscribers in the region to 9.55 million.
First Quarter Review
DIRECTV Latin America gross additions increased 55% to an all-time record of 765,000 in the quarter largely due to increased demand from the middle market segment mainly in Brazil. The record gross additions and a decline in post-paid churn to 1.43% driven by lower churn in Brazil and Venezuela, resulted in record net additions of 427,000, nearly double last year's first quarter results. Revenues for DTVLA increased 43% to $1.11 billion in the quarter principally due to strong subscriber growth and an 11.7% increase in ARPU. The increase in ARPU to $61.69 was mostly due to price increases and higher sales of HD and DVR services as favorable exchange rates in Brazil were mostly offset by unfavorable exchange rates in Argentina and Venezuela.

DIRECTV Latin America's first quarter 2011 OPBDA increased 57% to $384 million and operating profit increased 74% to $219 million, primarily due to the gross profit associated with higher revenue partially offset by higher subscriber acquisition costs associated with the record gross additions. Also impacting operating profit were higher depreciation expenses mostly due to the increase in set-top boxes deployed related to the higher gross subscriber additions attained over the last year.

FOOTNOTES

(1) Operating profit before depreciation and amortization, which is a financial measure that is not determined in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America, or GAAP, should be used in conjunction with other GAAP financial measures and is not presented as an alternative measure of operating results, as determined in accordance with GAAP. Please see each of DIRECTV and DIRECTV Holdings LLC's Annual Reports on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2010 for further discussion of operating profit before depreciation and amortization. Operating profit before depreciation and amortization margin is calculated by dividing operating profit before depreciation and amortization by total revenues.
(2) Cash flow before interest and taxes, which is a financial measure that is not determined in accordance with GAAP, is calculated by deducting amounts under the captions "Cash paid for property and equipment", "Cash paid for satellites", "Cash paid for subscriber leased equipment — subscriber acquisitions" and "Cash paid for subscriber leased equipment — upgrade and retention" from "Net cash provided by operating activities" from the Consolidated Statements of Cash Flows and adding back net interest paid and "Cash paid for income taxes". This financial measure should be used in conjunction with other GAAP financial measures and is not presented as an alternative measure of cash flows from operating activities, as determined in accordance with GAAP. DIRECTV and DIRECTV U.S. management use cash flow before interest and taxes to evaluate the cash generated by our current subscriber base, net of capital expenditures, and excluding the impact of interest and taxes, for the purpose of allocating resources to activities such as adding new subscribers, retaining and upgrading existing subscribers, for additional capital expenditures and as a measure of performance for incentive compensation purposes. DIRECTV and DIRECTV U.S. believe this measure is useful to investors, along with other GAAP measures (such as cash flows from operating and investing activities), to compare our operating performance to other communications, entertainment and media companies. We believe that investors also use current and projected cash flow before interest and taxes to determine the ability of our current and projected subscriber base to fund required and discretionary spending and to help determine the financial value of the company.
(3) Free cash flow, which is a financial measure that is not determined in accordance with GAAP, is calculated by deducting amounts under the captions "Cash paid for property and equipment", "Cash paid for satellites", "Cash paid for subscriber leased equipment — subscriber acquisitions", and "Cash paid for subscriber leased equipment — upgrade and retention" from "Net cash provided by operating activities" from the Consolidated Statements of Cash Flows. This financial measure should be used in conjunction with other GAAP financial measures and is not presented as an alternative measure of cash flows from operating activities, as determined in accordance with GAAP. DIRECTV and DIRECTV U.S. management use free cash flow to evaluate the cash generated by our current subscriber base, net of capital expenditures, for the purpose of allocating resources to activities such as adding new subscribers, retaining and upgrading existing subscribers, for additional capital expenditures and as a measure of performance for incentive compensation purposes. DIRECTV and DIRECTV U.S. believe this measure is useful to investors, along with other GAAP measures (such as cash flows from operating and investing activities), to compare our operating performance to other communications, entertainment and media companies. We believe that investors also use current and projected free cash flow to determine the ability of our current and projected subscriber base to fund required and discretionary spending and to help determine the financial value of the company.
(4) DIRECTV Latin America subscriber data exclude subscribers of the Sky Mexico service.

* Pre-SAC Margin, which is a financial measure that is not determined in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America, or GAAP, is calculated for DIRECTV U.S. by adding amounts under the captions "Subscriber acquisition costs" and "Depreciation and amortization expense" to "Operating Profit" from the Consolidated Statements of Operations and subtracting "Cash paid for subscriber leased equipment - upgrade and retention" from the Consolidated Statements of Cash Flows. This financial measure should be used in conjunction with GAAP financial measures and is not presented as an alternative measure of operating results, as determined in accordance with GAAP. DIRECTV and DIRECTV U.S. management use Pre-SAC Margin to evaluate the profitability of DIRECTV U.S.' current subscriber base for the purpose of allocating resources to discretionary activities such as adding new subscribers, upgrading and retaining existing subscribers and for capital expenditures. To compensate for the exclusion of "Subscriber acquisition costs," management also uses operating profit and operating profit before depreciation and amortization expense to measure profitability.
DIRECTV and DIRECTV U.S. believe this measure is useful to investors, along with GAAP measures (such as revenues, operating profit and net income), to compare DIRECTV U.S.' operating performance to other communications, entertainment and media companies. DIRECTV and DIRECTV U.S. believe that investors also use current and projected Pre-SAC Margin to determine the ability of DIRECTV U.S.' current and projected subscriber base to fund discretionary spending and to determine the financial returns for subscriber additions.

I like how directv makes it look like they are doing better than they actually are.... Take away the latin america stuff, Directv really only added 184,000 subs. While that is on par for directv, its really not that much.

DIRECTV U.S. increases net additions 84% to 184,000 in the quarter. <-------- This is the key number!

Well the satellite TV boom is pretty much over. With so many other options available to the customers, you're not going to see big numbers like in the past.

That is over 100k more (Harsh, I do not want to give the exact number because I do not feel like it) than what Dish added and they have yet to have a net loss quarter, unlike Dish. Yet, Dish too put out an optimistic report.

Besides, why exclude LA subs? They are still paying subs that add to the total count that bring in revenue to the same company.

You will see most paid TV provider numbers plateau soon. Most cable has plateaued long ago; they are now in the bandwidth business

extra $0.85 a share, if you have 100 shares you might be able to fill your gas tank twice!!! depending on its size.

That makes it an apples to oranges comparison when comparing against dish.... Also I found some fuzzy math from Directv anyhow. Looks like they actually had more sub growth than they reported.

As per the thread in the warzone here, http://www.satelliteguys.us/dish-ne...66-directv-vs-dish-sub-count.html#post2528427

No its not.... Directv reported that they ended the quarter with 19.41 million subs as per the press release.

DIRECTV U.S. ended the quarter with 19.41 million subscribers
Here DIRECTV, Inc. - DIRECTV Announces First Quarter 2011 Results Under US segment, 1st paragraph...

The previous quarter's press release reported that they had 19.22 Million subs.

Under forth quarter reivew, Here DIRECTV, Inc. - DIRECTV Fourth Quarter Results Complete Another Record Setting Year for the Company

DIRECTV U.S. ended the quarter with 19.22 million subscribers compared with 18.56 million subscribers as of December 31, 2009.

19.41-19.22 million subs = 190,000 adds. Directv's numbers are off or they are reporting the wrong numbers.

Agreed, it mostly regurgitates known solutions. That's the point. Nobody needs an innovative fix for a driver error or a creative way to format a report. Let it handle the solved problems so people can spend their time on the ones that aren't.

That's the point at which innovation ends, and there's no longer any point to software engineering other than swatting bugs that result from misapplication.

Addressed by what you didn't quote. This cycle is as old as computing: compilers, libraries, frameworks each automated the tedious part, and the human work moved up a level. Innovation didn't end; it shifted. And people still make new compilers, libraries or frameworks.

Nobody's forced to hand anything off. Anyone who wants to keep doing it by hand still can, and people who couldn't do it at all now can.

... and people who couldn't do it at all now can.
Misapplication isn't something that the casual coder can identify. They can only discover, the hard way, that it doesn't work at some point.

Good thing not everyone will have to learn the hard way then. The same tools can explain why something broke.

This is true of literally anything, though.

Happy to agree to disagree, but I'm already enjoying the dividends personally and helping others at work and at home do the same.

I was watching some of this guy's stuff and realized some of you may not be familiar. Basically his show is Candid Camera meets a magician. This is a comp of a few of his exploits. I first learned of him when I was out at a meeting in Denver about 10yrs ago. The men I was sitting at the table with started talking about this show and said it was one of the funniest things they had seen. When I got home I started watching it....yes, it is funny.

This started a couple months ago. I have 2 H3s on one network, both with 2 EHD identical 3 TB seperately powered so all recordings are accessible by all 4k & J4s (8 of them).

On one H3 (not the main one that controls the MOCA network), after it reboots, it doesn't recognize it has two EHDs plugged into it. Rebooting the EHD by their power source doesn't fix it. Resetting the network doesn't. Software h3 reset doesn't fix it. Rebooting MOCA h3 doesn't fix it but so far, after 3+ cold boots (unplug pwr to H3 with unrecognized EHDs), it finally it figures out they are plugged into it. BUT.... Then when you open a program it only partially shows series and episodes, but instead of showing recordings, it only shows upcoming airings. HELP!!!!

Thanks JohnGalt1234 - That's interesting. I wonder are the Boot Strap versions different between a Hopper 3 only and a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup as I have the later. I guess when charlesrshell is able to since he has both setups, he can do the test. Unless the bootstrap version is tied to when the specific Hopper 3 is manufactured, in my case, mines is from February 2016 when it was installed.

At least Google Search AI is saying the bootstrap version will never change and unique to each Hopper 3.

This is probably why different people seem to either have the issue or they don't because the bootstrap code could also be tied to the hardware revision and
components other than the internal HD.

JohnGalt1234 - So you basically have 2 Hopper 3's. The CasinoH3 is the one that is Hopper 3 only while Master Bedroom is a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup.
Master Bedroom uses Android TV (ATV) software so the DISH part is actually a app and will behave differently as you can probably tell the Guide's are different on the Master Bedroom which will resemble the same guide used on other ATV devices such as the Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4. If I am correct, the CasinoH3 is the one with the problem since you did say the one dated 09/05/2026 is the naughty one while 08/15/2026 named Master Bedroom is the nice one. Usually I would expect the CasinoH3 to be the one without the problem because it's Hopper 3 only and Master Bedroom would be the one with problems because it has the Hopper Plus involved. That is why they behave differently because CasinoH3 is running the native Hopper 3 software while Master Bedroom is running the Android TV software and also it runs a app called DISH known as package com.dish.atv.launcher, the version for mines is P15403 2026100917 so it's probably the same version as the Hopper Plus software version with the date of October 9, 2026, not sure what the 17 means except maybe revision 17?

This explains it better than I can. Sorry, had to take all the ads out.

As I understand it, the android is just the display signal from the hopper+. I can disconnect the H+ and plug the hdmi directly into the master hopper3.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.
West Palm Beach is getting it on WTCN-CD/43 MNT. Still nothing for Fort Myers

Also, the Thunder's deal for KSBI/52 OKC and KQCW/19 Tulsa will be via a special cable and DIRECTV only feed of those stations. OTA viewers and Dish customers will be limited to 10 games.

Thanks for the updates on CW norfolk
Hopefully comes to sat soon!!

Not seeing 44 (WVBT-DT/44 CW Norfolk ) on my D* app for firestick
K
It's only available for streaming customers, they still haven't added that batch of CW stations to satellite.

Even if it was, satellite customers still can't stream their CW affiliates via the app, just the Big 4, select PBS stations and some independents (mainly the ones that have full season NHL/NBA rights)

Really excited for this season with Kentucky having a new coach and some really exciting recruits. Probably won't last long, but here's hoping this season is great.

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

There are 68 Power 4 teams, so eventually they will get there I wouldn't imagine ...

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

Seeing theres very little activity in the MLB threads, it wouldn't matter if I posted that the Astros didn't make the Playoffs ...

Theres more NFL info in the Pub section than in the Sports/NFL thread.

IF they go to 24 teams, and it looks like they will soon ....
Do we Really want Teams with 3 and 4 losses in the Playoffs ?
Is a 3-4 Loss team one thats able to win 4-5 more games against Top teams ?

A 12 team playoff net should catch any undefeated team. The 12 team playoff also exposed that rankings suck. I mean, we kind of knew already that the rankings weren't particularly reproducible, but we now have the empirical evidence that the rankings suck because judging who is the best among a mickey mouse scheduled football season isn't a rational endeavor. So the 12 team playoff ensures most teams that should make it, do, including the mid-major undefeated team. 8 teams should be able to work as well, but puts greater risk at OSU and Alabama missing the playoff... can't have that.

Which is the run up to my main problem with the 24 team set up is that it is designed to keep the OSU's and Alabama's from missing the playoff. The cartels are ensuring widespread participation for their own cartels to increase the monetary reward to themselves. It is fixing the system while not fixing the outcomes, merely making the regular season game outcomes virtually irrelevant. Sure, a bye for winning the conference would be nice, but we've already seen that byes aren't that influential.

That is college football in a nutshell. Again, college football isn't about competition, it is about revenue. The entire setup is about making money, from regular season squash games against local jobbers like the WWF days to tax exempt bowl games.

And to add to the first world woes, the college football cartels have made being a College Football fan even more expensive... so they can get paid more.

No. Bring in someone new.🤔 Tony is not serious enough for me. Parker is too close to the team and Tim is too young to take over IMO.

I don't think Tim and Tony are that far apart in Age ...

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.

I'm curious how they are going to implement Tony into Origins (If they do) ...
Tony was introduced to Gibbs and the team, on NCIS, which makes it the Mothership side of things, he worked in Baltimore prior to NCIS, NO mention when they met that anyone had known one another ...

Please post your remote make/model here and any details of your issue. We are looking to collect as many examples as possible. I may reach out to you for your receiver number, but please do not post it here.

If you've already reported this to me, please repost it here so I can track all instances in one thread.

Thanks!

I lost IR control of my H3 after the H398 update in September of 25. We were using the Harmony Hub remote system from Logitech. We have been using the H3 OEM remote to turn the receiver on and off ever since then.

I have a solution that is guaranteed to work.
All Hopper developers are required to turn in their RF Hopper remotes and use only IR remotes.

I guarantee you that the bug will be fixed in two days!
Try it; it will work! They will work 24 hours a day to fix it when the WAF goes into the toilet!

BTW my bedroom H3 does not have this problem where I am using a Harmony 650. Also has there been any more feedback? Are they still working on this or what?

I think I have a separate issue with our Hopper 3 when watching/recording a 4K event. I have had many instances of it spontaneously restarting when I "disturbed" it during a 4K event. I learned to not touch the remote after a given point.

But it might be the IR code subroutine and 4K that make it touchy. I'll try it Wednesday night during the NLCS Game 3.

I was having similar issues last night while watching and recording the NLCS game on 148. When I tried resuming the game at one point the screen went blank and I couldn't get my H3 to respond to any remote commands. Eventually the Hopper went to a HD channel but still no remote response. After a while the Hopper went into a re-boot cycle. This happened at least 3 times. I was using an IR universal remote only.

A little frustrating to have the game broken up like that but at least the Brewers won:)

Yea, I've only been a CIO for the last 30 years! :)
Trust me, when something important breaks, they get to own it!

Loaded H713 software on my Hopper 3 last week. Have not seen any change in the IR/RF remote issues with my Harmony 700.
Has Dish acknowledged this is a problem and are they committed to fixing it?
I'd be happy to roll back to last July.
