I just returned from the Team Summit General Assembly, this is the place where all the announcements are made.

DISH Network surprised us by having a special guest host for today's assembly, that being Jason Alexander who played George Costanza on the hit tv show Seinfeld. Jason was a great host and had us laughing the entire time he was on stage.

For consumers you might not say it was an exciting event, but if you a retailer DISH has laid the foundation of something huge!

DISH has owned Blockbuster for about a week now so there are many ideas they shared some idea of how it can benefit the retailers, including the possibily of retailers have their showrooms in Blockbuster Stores, having Blockbuster DVD rental kiosks in front of their stores to bring dealers more foot traffic and more.

DISH is taking my advice from something I wrote in one of my MultiChannel News articles a few years ago and that is taking the reins and making DISH Network into THE company known for Movies. Indeed with the aquisition of Blockbuster, Dish has more movies then anyone else PERIOD.

DIRECTV can be the company known for sports and DISH is the company known for movies.

As a consumer looking in this is just the start of something big, you are going to see over the next year or two DISH Network taking all of its acquisitions and making something big, something that no other company will be able to do.

DISH understands that the way of watching television is changing and they want to be on the forefront of it. And in many ways they are leading the way.

Tom Cullen the Executive Vice President of Corporate Development for DISH told us DISH is in this for the long haul.

Ira Bahr, SVP and Chief Marketing Officer for DISH Network told us about the excitment of Blockbuster and how they can beat Netflix as they can deliver movies 28 days earlier then Netflix and Redbox.

Ira also announced the two new programs for new DISH Customers which is effecive May 18th, those being new customers get 3 months free of Blockbuster service. In addition new customer can get a free Sling Adapter when they sign up as well.

Dave Schull the Sr VP of Programming for DISH Network and talked to us and showed us all the HD that has launched this year on DISH Network, GSN HD was listed as was Viera HD (which has not launched yet).

Dave told us by this summer DISH Network customers will be able to enjoy movies from Blockbuster on their receivers.

He said that 3D Linear channels are coming to DISH this summer but did not give any details. He also mentioned that 722's will support 3D shortly.

A video was shown and it said that HBO on Demand was coming soon to DISH Network.

They showed retailers the DISH World IPTV Box and announced a new WIFI enabled DISH World IPTV was coming soon.

Vivek Khemka, Vice President of Consumer Technology came out and talked technology. He went into talking about GoogleTV a little bit and said that Google will announce next week the support for Google Apps on the Google TV platform. That should be kind of exciting, Google TV has so much potential, this will give it the kick in the pants it needs.

He then showed a new DISH Product they are calling The Tailgater. Which is a rebranded Vucube from King Controls. The price is attractive at $349, and it requires a DISH 211 to operate it.

For me as a consumer the MOST exciting announcement was the new Multiroom Viewing equipment. This new equipment allows full HD viewing in all rooms of your house with full trick play and the ability to share all recordings in any room.

The boxes we saw photos of were the XiP 813 and the XiP 110.

The XiP 813 is the heart of the system, it contains 3 satellite tuners and the hard drive for storage of your recorded shows. The XiP 110 is the box that hooks to your TV and is connected to the XiP 813 via a thin client. You need one XiP 110 on each TV.

The beauty of this system is its expandable, want more satellite tuners just add another XiP 813. Everything is automatically shared and expanded. And you can hook it up to as many TV's as you want. This is a lot more advanced then DIRECTV's MultiRoom Viewing in all ways.

The rest of the assembly was on retailers and DISH was giving them all the tool they needed to make sales easier including releasing a new DISH Sales App. DISH is even going so far as giving away Motorola Xoom's so that retailers can take advantage of the app.

So there you have it... from the consumer end not to much to report other then we see the stepping stones to something big... Rome was not built in a day... But for retailers selling DISH Network just got a bit easier and in many cases a lot more profitable. :)

Is the 813 capable of output, or will we need a 110 at "all" locations, meaning for 3 TVs, 3 110's, or will we be able to do 2 110's and the 813?

Did you not bother to read ANY of the previous thread before you posted? If you had, you should have understood the back of the 813 clearly has outputs ... 3 of them ... for direct connection to a television. At arguement *this* late in game is a minor squabble over what you'd label an output in terms of out to a TV ...

True, but I disagree with this misleading count. The Home Video output doesn't exist on any other Dish receiver, so comparing it (or the back panels) to Dish Duo receivers is not very illuminating. Can you get independent HD output to 3 (and possibly 4) TVs? I believe the answer is "Yes". Therefore, it should be called an 833 or 843, depending upon whether we can address the local output independently from the rest.
I see what you're getting at... but I'd modify what you're thinking.. while the Home Video Network is an output.. you cannot hook a television directly to that output ... that output *must* go to a special splitter/switch, for distribution to a 110 box, and THEN it can go to a TV. Every other box to date, and usually when we think of "outputs" we mean for direct connection to a television.. composite, compoent, coax, hdmi ...

You can't even hook-up a regular TV to that "Home Video Network" port without a spliter/diplexer because its a combined satellite IN on that port.. and that would be *if* the designers thought about putting a TV Modulator on the output... like it didn't already have enough going on...

If you really wanted to count every port that could output something then you'd have to add the USB, the Ethernet, etc.. but then you'd call them collectively "ports" .... because they all have different purposes ... hence outputs being meant how many TV1 / TV2 outputs.. and hence ... 813 ... 1 tv output, 3 ports for that TV ... the *8* can stand for model 8 and that can be your "icing", that it can multiplex to the 110 boxes, key is that without those boxes you have no other TV output to connect to.
TheKrell
Well, the key IMHO is not the number of connections on the back, regardless of what they can be used for. The key is the number of independent feeds, over whatever medium that works, that eventually can be displayed on a TV. We have read in this thread (or the questions/answers thread) is that, unlike existing receivers, the tuner inputs on an 813 are not hardwired to a particular output. But I have no idea how complete this flexibility is... Suppose the 813 has a Sling Adapter AND a USB ATSC tuner connected. Suppose furthermore that the user of the Sling Adapter is watching a recorded program. Can 4 TVs still watch 4 different live programs, as long as one is OTA?

Ok.. so roll with it.. if you have a limit of 10 110 thin clients, then you have an 8103? yeah.. THATS great.. start over with 1960's technology names.. ;) ok... a bit facetious there.. but seriously.. how else would you look at it? the box is a base 1 machine.

*8* for doG knows what ... 1 for the maximum supported TV's directly connected ... and 3 tuners? or 3 as the number of outputs to handle that one tv.. you pick.. personally I think its 8 / 1 / 3 ... eyes fingers toes ... no wait that's the key to remembering the Adams Family Vault ... whatever....

series 8 ... 1 tv (supported & directly connected), and 3 tuners..

722k ... 7 series ... 2 TV's, and 2 tuners (base)

Unless you want to discard the OTA since technially the original 722 had two digital sat tuners, and an OTA tuner built in... and that makes 3 tuners! ....

what sayeth you? (I prod only in jest, please do not take "harshnessly") :)

I sayeth that you and Dish think alike. ;) But my "20" says Dish will change the model number, at least slightly, before the receiver ever comes out. Do we have a bet?

Question for those paying attention: what was the 922 called during development?

Supposedly they will make it available to Vip dvrs ,but we don't know for sure. I'm hoping that they make an application for the google revue unit so we can stream like we do with Netflix.

I was at a blockbuster yesterday and saw that videogames are now part of there monthly movie service, that's a good move I think to add games from a business perpective I think it's good to think outside the box for other ways to deliver service, hope it works out!

Later while filing with FCC they changed the name to ViP822. Before launch it become ViP922.

Well, I read some of it, but not all. Was reading a few things so I apologize for missing that detail. Thanks for the reply

The two biggest bits of news for me are:
  • 722 will be upgraded to support 3D.
  • 3D Channels coming this summer.

All of this other stuff is no good for me right now. Multiroom will be great once my boys are old enough to have TVs in their rooms.

If it wasn't for what I want, I wouldn't need any of this.

Do I need a collection of handheld radios, scanners and speed enforcement countermeasures? Nope, but I want them. Very little, if any of the software used to interface with these devices is available on Linux.

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

I hope you don't believe that makes it wonderful (especially when you're using workarounds for Microsoft's malfeasance).

I use LibreOffice as opposed to Microsoft office (even in Windows) because it's UI is like the Office of old, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is (in a manner of speaking). The ribbon was one of the worst ideas to come out Redmond.

I used to pin the C: drive to the Win Taskbar and it would open in cascading style

It's dead, they just don't know it yet. They killed it by forcing DRM on it, and that TOTALLY botched implementing it.

There is absolutely NO compelling reason for anybody to switch to ATSC3.0. They only want it as a total and complete money grab.
Mister B
What bothers me is the total waste of broadcasting spectrum in this very crowded market. It has been almost three years now since KFOX converted their broadcast tower to ATSC 3.0 and moved all of their channels to other towers causing noticeable degradation of the picture quality.
I have a Sony TV with 3.0 capabilities but still use the 1.0 version of locals due to the fact that one or all of the 3.0 channels are often missing or unwatchable. In this city of 800K I doubt that more than a few hundred even know about ATSC 3.0.
The only thing that could motivate me to be interested in 3.0 would be if all of the minor networks (diginets) could be in at least 720P rather than blurry ultra-compressed 480i.
Three years is long enough to waste one of the few available RF frequencies in the area for this trial.
It is time to either move on with this experiment or call it quits.

Over the past few weeks, I have had problems connecting to streaming services (Netflix, HBO et al). When I go to the TV's native Channels, I have no problem. The Dish internet troubleshooter shows I have a good internet connection. I'm wondering whether it's an issue with my internet provider or a problem with the Dish software on the Hopper Plus. Anyone else seeing this?

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
