Based on the title what do you think? Do you think any, some or all of the major sports in trouble? What I mean is here is an example. Look at the NBA. Now everybody watched the NBA in the 80s with Bird and Magic and then in the 90s with Jordan. But now, do you think the NBA is in a good place as far as attendance, ratings etc.
Do you think the NHL is in a bad position as far as popularity, attendance etc.? What do you think?

I believe the NBA championship had their best ratings ever, last year. This year it will be down due to the teams playing.

Well i do not think that there is any major sports that is in trouble . Well Sports are getting popularity rather than having trouble . Basket ball is the the most popular game .

NBA the only sport in 'trouble' IMO, with their opening salvo of terms to kick off labor negotiations to reduce player contracts 40%. I've read that it's gotten better, but oof, what a way to start. With the Heat committed to like $70m in salaries next year, it's another thing for Cavs fans to root for, a hard cap that puts them in a tough spot. Going from some of the most widely watched finals to a potentially ugly court and labor battle so soon after could prove troublesome.

Football - The best run sport, because it wins its strikes on our behalf. Win this one.
In order for 'us' to win, neither side can win. A long term deal that both of them can be equally happy (or unhappy) about is the most ideal one, otherwise it's rinse and repeat in a few years.

We'll see what happens with the Hockey labor situation too soon.

No sport is in some dire situation though that it may cease to operate or anything though.

Ratings ended up just shy of last year only because there was a game 7.

Game 6 this year was the highest rated game 6 in 11 years.

It was the third highest rating since ABC began televising the finals in 2003, behind last year's Game 7 (18.2) and Game 5 of the 2004 NBA finals (15.5 for Lakers-Pistons).

the funny thing about NBA ratings is that they are AWFUL in the Finals consistently from 2000-2010 if the Lakers were not in the series. The Cavs/Spurs series, which featured LeBron, had abysmal ratings. I think basketball is a very market-dependent sport. Outside of New York, Los Angeles, Boston, and Chicago, there is not a large historical base of support. Oklahoma City fans have been great ever since they were the temporary home of the Hornets, so that could become a good sized basketball market. Texas has also become a hotspot for basketball with all 3 teams located their being consistently good ever since the Spurs won a title. You look at the Spurs 4 titles, the Mavs record ever since Cuban took over, Houston won titles in the 90s and had good teams in the 2000s. Outside of these areas though, basketball support is VERY fickle. Wasn't there a statistic that more than half of the NBA teams do not sell out or turn a profit?

For baseball, it has definitely declined a LOT in popularity. I have become a lot less interested in it. I still think the MLB playoffs are a blast to watch, mainly because the opportunities in each game are so few, that it makes the whole game interesting. The regular season is too drawn out for me however.

I have never cared about hockey. I was born in Indiana, grew up in southern Cal, and have lived in Florida since. I do not care for hockey. My parents' family LOVE hockey though, because they are all from Illinois and most have only moved as far as Michigan or Indiana.

Football, even with the current lockout, is far and away the most popular sport in the US. College football has become even more popular in recent years, and it might overtake the NFL as the most popular medium of football if there is no NFL season this year. When you look at attendance numbers for both NCAA and NFL football, it is amazing. Other than the Jaguars, Raiders, Bills, Bengals, and Lions, has any other team struggled with attendance recently? The Jags, Raiders, and Lions also rebounded last year with some better seasons(I know that the Jags actually sold out every home game), but these teams possibly could have even sold out the stadium with losing records in the recent years if there wasn't a recession. College stadiums remained packed, and many of the schools have 90k+ capacity, which is also mind-boggling. Case in point: America LOVES football right now, and nothing comes close. TV and attendance numbers are very high.

I assume major sports refers to pro sports, because if it doesn't, we probably have 6 major sports here(add in ncaab and ncaaf). The attendance for college basketball and football is still very high, but that is probably attributed to students of course.

Lkr,

Pretty good take. I cannot say that I disagree with anything you stated.

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

West Palm Beach is getting it on WTCN-CD/43 MNT. Still nothing for Fort Myers

Also, the Thunder's deal for KSBI/52 OKC and KQCW/19 Tulsa will be via a special cable and DIRECTV only feed of those stations. OTA viewers and Dish customers will be limited to 10 games.

Thanks for the updates on CW norfolk
Hopefully comes to sat soon!!

Not seeing 44 (WVBT-DT/44 CW Norfolk ) on my D* app for firestick
K
It's only available for streaming customers, they still haven't added that batch of CW stations to satellite.

Even if it was, satellite customers still can't stream their CW affiliates via the app, just the Big 4, select PBS stations and some independents (mainly the ones that have full season NHL/NBA rights)

Be nice to see a Cowboy headline like that.
Yes the Cowboys owner needs to fire the general manager (himself), co-owner, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Executive Vice President, Director of Player Personnel, and President of AT&T Stadium (his son) and then he should jump off of a cliff. Only then can they recover.

Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson had an argument about who was responsible for the dynasty building of the early 90's Cowboys.

The rest of us figured it out in about 3 years, Jerry has had over 30 years but still can't admit it. It's all he lives for, to show everyone he can put together a winner. I don't think he can. His kids only know what he taught them.

I was a devout Cowboy fan in the Landry era, grudgingly gave Jimmy his due, since then not so much, the Jones family took care of that...

Odd that out there, Prem is only 40 cents higher. Here it's a full dollar more.

Last night it was about $4.17 gas, $6,19 diesel.

On the West Coast, a 40-cent differential is common. It used to be 30 cents before the prices rose above $3.

A "full dollar more" sounds like it may be boat gas (non-alcoholic), which is a whole different discussion.

Both non-ethanol and prem run about the same....buck more. When we were up in TN it was a buck more up there as well.

In Oregon, our premium boat gas is about a dollar more than our corn premium. Several stations only offer the non-corn premium grade.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

17 years ago the US turned off analog OTA signals in favor of digital broadcasting. Now the push is ATSC 3 "Nextgen TV". But nobody seems to be able to agree on DRM implementation protocols. People don't want to hook their TV up to the internet in order to watch over the air TV. At least I don't. With all the data they collect about your viewing habits the box should be given away at no cost.
