Best idea's on adding external HD with a HR24 500 whole home system.

I would like to add an external hard drive to my hr24-500. And need to know

what HD would be best to use/ most compatible, and easy to set up? Looking at 1-2 TB.

Several things to consider.

First off, the boxes are NOT compatible with the new 3TB drives at this time. This may or may not be solved with a software patch in the future, but even in PC's most older computers need a controller card in order to use a 3+TB drive.

Second: Do not cheap out on those "Green" drives - their power saving features tend to cause problems in applications outside of a regular 'desktop' computer. All of the manufacturers make a "Media grade" drive specifically designed for use in DVR's and media servers. Use one of those. I am partial to WD, and if there is a reason that I don't use WD for a particular application, I use Hitachi. I've had bad experiences with Seagates, but YMMV.

Third, look for drives that do NOT use the new Advanced Format. Basically you do not want any drive that says anything about '4k sectors', you want '512k sectors'. The newer ones will work, but what happens is that when the drive controller 'fakes' the old format system it makes the drive do a lot of extra work, and it causes them to fail prematurely.

Fourth - and this is the biggie - the external drive capacity REPLACES the internal drive. It does not add to it. So your unit has (I believe) 750GB internal. You will not get 2.75TB by adding the 2TB external drive, you will only have 2TB. IMO this is stupid and DirecTV should change it, but just don't be surprised when the capacity isn't what you expect. On this same note (which reinforces the stupidity of the setup), you will 'lose' everything stored on the internal drive while the external drive is connected. In order to go back and watch programs that were stored on the internal drive you have to disconnect the external drive and reboot. It's tedious and takes a lot of time, so for all intents and purposes consider the programs on the internal drive gone.

As for setup, All you need to do is buy an external, POWERED enclosure that has an eSATA port. Install the new drive into the enclosure, plug it into the eSATA port on the back of the HR24 (not the USB port, that will not work), and do a red button reboot. The new external drive will be recognized automatically and it will ask you if you want to format it. Once formatted it's ready to go!

I agree with the majority of what you posted here, however, when you mention you will "LOSE" your internal programs when the EHD is set up, is kinda the wrong way to say it, as you know you don't lose it, just can't access it with the EHD.

Doesn't sound like it's a big deal. (as long as you have access to unplugging it, it's not a big deal to do) .... really doesn't take much more time than a software update or typical reboot.

Also, I have has great luck with the Seagate 750 and 1.5tb EHD's, however they are older units as I haven't bought a new one in 3 or so years, so no telling what kind of luck you'd have with the newer stuff ...

Exactly. It's not a big deal, but something doesn't need to be difficult in order to be tedious. Tedious means something takes too long, or happens too slow, or is boring. I just timed it, and a RBR takes 4 minutes 35 seconds from powerup to watchable. A software update could easily double that. Your average computer boots up in about 30 - 45 seconds. If you have a slow one it may be a minute, minute and a half. But would you put up with having to wait 5 -10 minutes for it to boot up every time you wanted to change a disk in the CD drive? I can't imagine waiting on that every time you want to switch between drives (imagine if it caught a software update during the reboot??). D* could very easily enable both drives simultaneously, and that's how it should be done. That's how EVERY other provider's (expandable) DVR works. The way it works now almost defeats the purpose of even having the eSATA port to begin with.

Matt I was curious on what Hitachi models your recommending. I'm looking in the 1.5-2tb range. I got the WD10EADS that I have seen recommended on here and so far I have not been able to get it to work-Very disappointed. I have a Thermaltake docking station and when I reset the reciver the first time it gave me a error message. Ever since no matter what I do I can't get it to read the drive, it just bypasses it and goes to the internal drive. Thanks

Hitachi is one brand that doesn't actually make a "media grade" drive (I should've put 'almost all'). They have consumer grade (Deskstar) and enterprise grade (Ultrastar). To be honest, the Deskstar drives have served me well, and they are relatively cheap. I use them in my media server. HOWEVER, I'll just say that for a DVR I would go with an Ultrastar, only because they are designed for the constant read/write it'll be doing. Even in a home/small business server the drives are mostly idle. In a DVR with the live buffer it is being written to and read from nonstop and that will put a serious hurt on a consumer drive. Ultrastars are about twice the price, but for that you're getting a full 5 year replacement warranty (vs 3 year on the Deskstar).

The WDxxEADS drives are the 'green' ones. Like I said, they tend to be troublemakers outside of a plain vanilla computer. The other ones to stay away from are the WDxxEARS - these are the new Advanced Format version. For a WD I would recommend a WDBAAZ0015 or 20, which are Black drives with the old format, costing about 50% more than the green versions.

Actually, generally speaking a HD DVR takes about 7 minutes to reboot, a HD RECVR is much less, but the DVR's take longer.

How OFTEN would you be swapping drives ?
O would think it wouldn't be something you would do very often .

I tried the Western Digital 1TB HD labeled a "DVR Expander". It lists most DirecTV DVRs except the HR24 (which is what I have). The model number is WDBABT0010HBK-NESN. Bought it at Best Buy. The DVR recognized and formatted it but it keeps forgetting that it is connected. Not sure what is going on but the HD is going back.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

My wife mentioned that her remote is acting strange this morning. She hit FF and it went to 15x FF.

This has been an ongoing issue. A fix is coming, probably in the next software version.

Dish Hopper and Dish Hopper Plus No Alexa in settings

I have Dish Hopper and Hopper Plus and also have Alexa Echo. I link the Alex skill to Dish and it asks me to enter the pairing code shown on the TV. I go into Dish Settings and there is no Alexa shown. Not sure what to do.

Android is Google. Google is Android. Android OS and Google TV are the same thing.
The Hopper+ and Joey 4's run Android TV, which is Google's television version of Android.
That means under the hood, you have:

Linux kernel
Android framework
Google TV / Android TV interface
Google Play Store for TV apps

Alexa is the competition. Google is not going to host their competition.
The old Hopper Carbon UI is NOT Google so that's why Alexa was on there.

Understood. But here's the rub - Google Assistant setup is ALSO missing from the Hopper Plus setup. I'm a paraplegic.and need to use voice controls as much as possible but I can't press a button on the remote to activate Google Assistant. I prefer ALEXA (or ALEXA+) but I have one older google device and will go that route IF they make it available. BTW calling Dish Customer Service is no help- they just say they have no info on if/when there will be an update.

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Paramount lost a number of the Star Trek creative crew to other projects, like Ron Moore going on to BSG and "For All Mankind". I see Denise and Michael Okuda are also involved with FAM.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Agreed, it mostly regurgitates known solutions. That's the point. Nobody needs an innovative fix for a driver error or a creative way to format a report. Let it handle the solved problems so people can spend their time on the ones that aren't.

Addressed by what you didn't quote. This cycle is as old as computing: compilers, libraries, frameworks each automated the tedious part, and the human work moved up a level. Innovation didn't end; it shifted. And people still make new compilers, libraries or frameworks.

Nobody's forced to hand anything off. Anyone who wants to keep doing it by hand still can, and people who couldn't do it at all now can.

Been reading this thread but not commenting much, primarily because there is so much "news" out there on this topic and it is hard to tell what is real and what is theater.
My biggest problem with AI is that these agents are taught...not necessarily programmed but taught. Well, there's an old saying "garbage in/garbage out". I remember a Joe Rogan show a while back when he had Elon Musk on and they talked about AI and Elon said one of the AIs (can't remember which one, sorry) was asked which was worse, Thermonuclear War or mis-gendering Kaitlyn Jenner and it came back with the answer that mis-gendering was worse. Now forget the politics involved with all the gender stuff we have been subjected to the past few years.....to say that mis-gendering is worse than the killing of hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of human beings.....Kaitlyn Jenner included.....is simply insane not to mention incredibly dangerous.

SXM still giving discounts

My year was almost up and we got the new bill for a year of service for $ 360.00 insane sat radio is becoming like cable!!! i logged into my acct and hopped onto chat and told the rep that i wanted to cancel. she understood my concern and went quiet for a few minutes. i figured that she was canceling my service. she comes back and said that she seen that i have been a sub since 07 and then offers me the same package for a year for 120.00 with taxes and fee's!!! i grabbed it. after almost having a stroke :biggrin

What i noticed with my last renewal XM is now billing me $4.99 monthly instead of one time yearly payment.

I still do the once a year plans.

I know a few people who have plug and play receivers with boomboxes that use them at work due to lack of cell phone service, especially in factory environments surrounded by steal. Someone I used to work with is a FedEx driver now and uses a plug and play receiver in his work truck. In the off-chance when he's in a Sprinter van, he'll use the app via Bluetooth, but his normal truck its a plug and play with a vehicle kit. So while there is a limited market for them, it still exists.

I did that as well, putting one in my Work truck with the antenna kit, trying to do it so WORK didn't see it.

I tried to do that, when I did delivery driver work (2010- 2013), we had a fleet of Freightliners. The newer trucks had headunits that were satellite compatible (XM only I think), but lacked the antenna and guts. I got a car kt for my old Roady XT and tried to use it, but at the volume levels I needed have it at to hear it over the diesel engine it sounded like crap, so I used my phone with an aux cable. When I was in the middle of nowhere with no cell service it didn't do me any good though.

At my current job, one of our new cars has the free trial of SXM active, I frequently have to go off site to a location 75 miles away in a rural area and it's nice being able to use the service off of the satellites versus using the app. There are many places on this journey where all three providers lack service.

I have to think maybe more people dont keep track of the monthly XM bill. Every time i renew i put a reminder on my calendar week before its time to renew. My wife told me the other day not to renew her and then i told her you are not going to be able to listen to XM at home. Then she changed her mind...!!

I get an e-mail every month reminding me that X amount will be charged to my credit card. If I see it go up I get on chat or pick up the phone. But I also remember that my year is up in December.

yea i don't understand WHY, like you I get a notice each month. Mine is also up in December.

You have to find my account in the settings. Only works if you're connected to internet.
