Rather than waste a lot of you guy's time with lots of stupid questions I did a lot of reading, a lot of guessing and a lot of finger crossing.

Well over a year ago I obtained a ku motor (thank you Dad!) and for all this time it languished in its box, gathering dust, never once used.

A few weeks ago I got a burr under my saddle and decided that by golly, I was going to make it work!

I sat and looked at it for weeks. The darn motor tube is larger than standard and NONE of my dishes are standard ku dishes such as the type sold for motor mounting. They are old Primestar and Directway dishes. I can thank my ex husband for scrounging them out of whatever trash piles he found them in, for whatever reason he wanted them. I'm just glad he left them behind.. :)

Anyway.. So the non-standard motor just would not mate up to the non-standard dishes I have. Grrrrrrr........

So I sat and looked at things, time and time again, trying to figure out some way, any way that I could put the motor onto ANY dish that I have here.

Then I took that digital measuring tool Dad gave me and went around the garage, house and yard measuring EVERYTHING.

I knew ALL the dishes I have fit on a fence post, like for gates and corners. I think they are about 2 1/2" around, more or less. The motor tube was too small for that but not by much.

One of the things that was a problem was that at the bottom of the motor tube there was this large lip all around that was far too large to fit into anything. Not cool..

So I decided that had to go. I took a hacksaw and sawed that flippin lip off!

Then back to measuring everything again. I was sitting on the deck and looked over at a pile of fence tubes I had sawn up for making wind chimes (I make gianormously wicked wind chimes for a hobby) and picked up a short piece and looked at it. Hmmm.. No way I thought.. So I had the motor sitting there and the piece of tube in hand and one of the little Primestar dishes sitting there and it dawned on me... I slipped the tube into the Primestar dish. It fit of course. Then I took it out and picked up the motor and slid it over the motor tube. It fit! Snugly at that! NO WAY!! This was it! This was my magic moment! I had my adapter! WOO HOO!!

The tube was even the right length! I didn't have to cut it any more, it was a left over and I was so happy that I could make use of it rather than it go to waste..

So I drilled a hole through the adapter and into the motor tube and put a screw through them both so that it can not spin, twist or slip off.

I spent a few days reading the manual trying to understand how to adjust the tipping stuff but it wasn't sinking in at all. Not to mention, the manual was assuming I was using a standard dish that was designed for motors. This one was not. I had taken it's pole mounting on the back and flipped it upside down as many had mentioned in threads here.

I took the motor and dish out to the pole and bolted the dish to the pole then I put the dish onto the motor. That's when I realized that I had the motor totally tilted waaaaaay wrong. Back inside for more reading... Finally it began to dawn on me so I went out and took it all apart and changed the tilt again. I ended up tilting the motor to my latitude or longitude, it's 30. I can not remember which is what that lat. long. stuff mixes me up 100% of the time. Anyway, which ever one it is, I set it to that on the motor tilt. The motor came from the factory set at zero.

One of the things I read here was that you should try to us a satellite as close to true south as possible for your alignments. Dishpointer.com tells me that Galaxy 3C at 95 is very close to true south for me. So I took my new little meter and found that satellite without operating the motor. All I did was turn the dish east and west then adjusted the tilt on the dish itself until I found the satellite. From there I tightened it down and called it good. The next day I went out and manually tried to get a better signal and stumbled upon the "wild feeds" on 91 Galaxy 17.

I hooked the lnb into my 8 way switch and left the motor disconnected. For a week or so I just played with it scanning each afternoon for news feeds, watching reports dig out wedgies and smoke cigarettes between takes. :D

So last night I decided it was time to try and get it right.

I took the wires off from the 8 way and removed it from the main system then hooked it to a spare wire and put it on the Coolsat 6000.

I went into the Coolsat setup screen and told it that I have a USALS motor. It asked for my location in long. and lat. I looked that up and entered it. Then I went to blind scan and told it to scan in the satellite 97 Galaxy 19. It turned on the motor and moved the dish. And nothing came in. At this point I was ~assuming~ everything. I was assuming that the system was intelligent and it knew where to move the dish to without me having to program it. Oh yeah?? Cool!

So I assumed that it had moved the dish to point at 97 but that I didn't have it on the pole the right way. I went out and put the dish on the little meter, loosened it up and turned it until I got a signal. I adjusted it back and forth and adjusted the dish tilt until I got as good a signal as I could. I took the meter off, put the wires back and went inside and started playing with the Coolsat. I scanned and found some channels. I moved to a new satellite and scanned and found channels there. I spent a few hours at it and my results were not exactly great. But I kept at it and went back outside and tried adjusting a few more times until about 5am I hit gold and was finding all the channels on all the satellites. :D

So now I have a fully operational ku motor. But, it's on the Coolsat and I don't want it there. I want it on the system with all the other dishes. That's where the real challenge will come in to place. I have no idea how I will make this increasingly complicated system all play nice..

Oh, and the little 6 foot dish. I found an OLD C-band tuner that turned up last year and I hooked the motor wires from that dish to that old tuner. The tuner itself is old and crummy and the remote is broken but it has two push buttons on the front. When you push them, even a tiny, brief punch, the dish moves a LOT. Pretty imprecise if you ask me. But I got lucky.
That 6 foot dish is on the 8 way switch for the PC so I changed channels to one of the LeSEA channels then used the buttons on that old tuner to bump the dish back and forth until I landed on the right satellite at 99 Galaxy 16. I got exceptionally lucky and with a few bumps I was able to get those channels in loud and clear. And that's where that dish will sit. No need to move it, it works really, really well right there. And on those channels they run some oldies I like, like Green Acres and such.. :) As Charlie would say, "WINNING!" :D

I also did some manual editing on transponders for 87 AMC 3 since the PC can't do blind scans and no other piece of equipment I have can tune in S2 channels. There is no way for me to blind scan S2 channels at all. So I ~must know~ where they are to begin with.

I did that and then rescanned 87 and I found a ton more S2 channels. Most of them are not listed either here on The List or on Lyngsat. The stuff on Lyngsat appears to be way out of date. Oh well..

So now I have like almost 75 S2 channels on 87. They are almost all RTV or TUFF but they seem to be small town low power stations around the country. And many of them run stuff different from the national schedule. And that is AWESOME! If I miss something I can usually find it hours later or find things that no longer run on the national feed! I love it!

The S2 channels are really touchy though so I need to get out there and fine tune the big dish but that's a low priority. I can usually compensate by bumping the dish around a little with the Gbox remote control. Over all the BIG 10 foot dish is working great and I'm getting lots of awesome channels on it!

And for ALL of this, I thank you guys. There is no way in the world I could have gotten any of this working without your knowledge and help. THANK YOU......

So my next step to completing my set up is taking the ku motorized dish and adding it into the pc system, somehow. The Coolsat is just a testing tool and I don't want to use it as it won't get audio on most channels, won't get HD, won't get S2 and you can't record at all with it or schedule channel changes. Eh... But it is a handy testing tool...

In the end I want ALL the dishes on the pc and the pc controlling them all. I'm close, I'm real close to getting that done. I just don't know how to do it. I don't know how to make the ku motor play nice with the 8 way switch and the Gbox too. I have a general idea of how it should work, I just don't know what I have to do to make it happen.

But I'll get it. I'll figure it out. I'll keep reading and I'll try not to be a pest and ask stupid questions and waste people's time. It takes me a looooong time to get things done but I'm learning..

:)

P.S. in the pictures the pole and stuff looks crooked but it's not. I just tilted the camera because I was slapping mosquitoes when I trying to take pics.. :o

Thank you Crackt, the hidden menu (Why do they do that???????) that you pointed out to me, let me make adjustments so that the picture finally, at long last, totally fills the screen on my Vizio! Now stuff that is old, like MeTV shows that are filmed in the 4x3, well, they still have vertical bars on the sides but I'm ok with that. Other stuff, HD shows, totally adjust to fill the screen now. Even the local OTA TV that broadcasts in all sorts of crazy sizes. I am now getting full use of my big screen now! Woo hoo!

It took me about an hour of playing with all the settings and changing the windows desktop size but it works pretty darn good now... I feel a little less cheated now.. :)
I'll chill for a bit with this until I find a single tuner that does everything. I still want an "Everything box"..

Anyway.. So my dad bought a plastic tool box to put the outside lnb combiner in, just like I did. I went over there yesterday to show him how I made mine. While I was there I gave them some help with the Openbox and added the NBC stuff on 72 for them to their favorites.

Turns out that since they got it, they haven't gotten out of the favorites menu. They said they were afraid to mess with it. LOL!!
I showed them how to bring up the list of satellites and how to tune through them when they aren't in their favorites, just free roaming around through whatever they desire.

They also couldn't figure out how to browse the vacation photos I put on the disk so I showed them that, again.

I noticed that some channels were all broken up and my mom said that happens sometimes. It was then that I remembered that we needed to adjust the dish because it's a little loose and wiggly and you guys posted in another thread about how to fix that, backlash I believe is the term. We didn't have time to do that though because Dad had to get to the hardware store before they closed so we'll work on that next week. We decided that it's best to adjust it while I have my meter there in case it changes where it points and the whole things needs readjustment. They had just assumed that satellite doesn't always come in so good and they would just go tune in something else. I told them that NO!, that's not the case and that it should always come in perfectly with the exception of very strong winds (blowing the dish about) or heavy rains. All other times it should come in perfectly and that they need to let me know when it doesn't so we can fix it.

Otherwise, they are really enjoying FTA satellite a LOT. They are really digging Antiques Road Show most of all and the HD really makes it super nice.
Dad complained about the commercials on The History Channel, the repetitive animal abuse and sick kids stuff. He said once an hour is plenty but when they run them 20 times an hour that grates on his nerve and they lose his support. I'm with him there. But I reminded him that "Hey, it's FREE!" and that the hotels probably put their own local commercials over those so they are like PSA filler. I think. Anyway he shrugged and said "Yeah, I just mute it and go to the bathroom."

Mom hates the remote control. She is going blind with MD and the white text on the white buttons is a miserable design for her and Dad hates it too. I hate it. Dad has to take his glasses off to see the buttons, me and mom can't see them without our glasses. What a horrible design. Someone needs to make an aftermarket remote for this thing that has a few essential BIG buttons with high contrast lettering that are "old people friendly"... They should at least have an option for that when you buy the tuner, you can get a tuner with a remote for young people with perfect vision or a tuner with a remote for old people going blind. Sheesh...

But anyway, overall, they are really enjoying having FTA and I feel really good that I've had a part in bringing some enjoyment to them, for once.

There is a chance that I may be fixing them up with a small C band dish soon so they can get Me and This tv in addition to what they get now. They are going to LOVE FTA then! :D

I just hope that works out. I haven't acquired the dish yet so it's not a done deal but I've got my fingers crossed..

Oh, and I see you guys talk about this as a hobby. I think that for me, it's become an obsession.

Do what?

u can run ur coax thru ur coolsat then loop it out to ut pc card & use the stb to move ur motor instead of the pc card ( i did this with a pansat 3500 & a twinhan1020a for a while onan early dvbdream setup)

Oh, see, I don't understand how that would work though. Once upon a time I had the coolsat between the dishes and the pc but when you turned the coolsat on it shut off the signal to the pc, you couldn't use them both at once. It was one or the other. At least as far as I could figure it out.
T
try this..... hook the cable from the dishes to the cs.... then loop out to the card, turn the cs on to move the motor to the desired position & turn it off (power on back) then watch what u want... i know its a pain in the rear end to turn off power & such but it works, with an underpowered card it used to be the only option for a motor

No. Bring in someone new.🤔 Tony is not serious enough for me. Parker is too close to the team and Tim is too young to take over IMO.

I don't think Tim and Tony are that far apart in Age ...

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.

So do you use the plastic or metal sausage grinder? I'm assuming you use a mixer. I'm looking at attachments for my Kitchenaid.

Have the beef version of the above mixed and covered in the fridge to soak up flavor, have a lb of ground pork will same with... (down to 2 rolls of previous chorizo batches)
dfergie
Mixed 1 lb pork same way, tested about 4 hours later, both good.
Meal prepped scrambled egg bowls with both and stashed in fridge, had beef version this morning… Good mix.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

For quite a while now, people with a VIP211k have been losing their recordings on their activated external HDDs... even when there's nothing physically wrong with HDD. I believe this is an intentional and underhanded tactic that Dish is pulling in an attempt to force users away from the VIP211k.

They are obviously regretting that they ever let users have a "non-dvr" dvr in the first place. You would think they would be happy charging you a $40 one time fee... and then be happy letting the customer be the one responsible for HDD failures.

Dish clearly hates the 211k bitter-clingers. This recording deletion problem is intentional (IMO), and I think it is just one more tool that they are using. Hopper and a 2-year agreement... that's what they want you to have. Think about that... a 2-year agreement... with a company $30 Billion in debt (that's with a B). What happens when all that debt causes them to drop the channel that may have been your whole reason for having Dish in the first place? Guess who's stuck with a service that no longer suits their needs... for the remainder of the 2-year agreement.

On top of that, they don't want you to install it yourself. I purchased and installed all my equipment myself. That used to be common. Now, they lie to me and tell me that my dish must be updated to use a Hopper. Funny thing is... they don't even know what dish I have because they didn't install it, and I didn't tell them. If you ask what type of dish/LNBs the hopper needs... good luck getting an answer. All they know is that whatever you have needs to be upgraded by an installer.

It is quite apparent to me that they care much more about staying in their box, than they do working with the customer. That's too bad, because it hasn't always been that way. It's like they are totally unaware of the current business environment that they are trying to compete in.

I have been a customer since 2010. I will be cancelling my service before the next period. Yeah, I know, my $1,200 a year won't make a difference to them. It just seems like they have forgotten who needs who, especially when you consider the competition in today's streaming world. But hey, they will have succeed in forcing me off the 211k.

Well, after nine months of being on pause, I finally figured out that I was wasting $5 a month. So I cancelled. For the first time since 2010, I no longer have a Dish account.

I do have to say that I did appreciate the account pause option. That just gives a person some time to see what the fallout of cancelling will be... without having to go all the way over the cliff first.

Since I never once had an "oh shoot, I need Dish Network for..." moment, the decision was a lot easier.

Funny enough, when I called to cancel (for real, not playing the pricing game), all of a sudden, they were offering me deals that I was told before that I couldn't get without changing out my VIP211k. Now, I could have had those specials with them just sending me a new card for the receiver. LOL!

Of course, my mind was already made up because of having not missed the service while on pause. That, and the fact that I bet the 211k still kills recordings.

All in all, I'm glad that I had Dish for all those years. I just outgrew the need, and they pressed the issue by deleting recordings. I would have eventually went this route without the deleted recordings issue. But, for sure, that did hasten the outcome.

I'll still pop in at this site from time to time. Believe it or not, I still have a C/Ku BUD that I intend on playing with again if life ever slows down.

Unless things have changed at Dish, which is entirely possible, they won't activate the 211, even as a replacement. I gave one to a customer a while back....which when I turned it off I made sure to tell the CSR I wanted it freed up so another customer could use it, I was assured it was.....and when they called to swap out there's they were told it couldn't be done. Now like I said, things MIGHT HAVE CHANGED.

It hasn't changed. When I cancelled my service the other day, they told me I didn't need to return the receiver (which I already knew because I purchased it).

But in addition to that, the young man told me not to sell it, but to take it to a recycling place. The reason he gave for the advice was because 211Ks can no longer be activated.

So as far as the VIP211k goes... once grandpa dies, he's dead.
T
They tell you to trash it and not to sell simply because they're phasing them out, not particularly because someone might be "confused" into buying it and not be able to activate. They tell people that in every case where they're not acting to get a box back, either from a replacement or service cancel.

Although my VIP211K hasn't been subscribed or connected to a dish in probably 5 years since canceling service, my 1 TB HDD full of programming still works fine.

Upon occasion I power it up to watch something I recorded as far back as 2010. The last time I had it going in September it even let me rescan the local OTA channels which I think it refused at some earlier time. I will use it until the day it fails but this topic makes me think some software download is responsible for current subscribers.

Has anyone subscribed to NBA League Pass for 2026-27 and try to link their account to NBA.com to stream League Pass? I purchased it for 2026-27, and when I linked, I got a message saying success, but then I receive an error that my linked subscription does not include the preseason games for NBA League Pass. Is that how it has always been? I know satellite doesn't have the preseason games on the NBA League Pass channels, but I thought that I was able to stream the preseason once I linked my account on NBA.com?

I found my answer...when I log into the NBA app on my phone and try to watch, it gives me a more clear answer that it acknowledges I have paid for NBA League Pass from Dish and it is linked, but I need an "upgraded" subscription to League Pass for the preseason games. So I guess it is by design that Dish does not show the preseason games on League pass and that the contract Dish has signed for league pass is explicitly for the regular season games. (I know the description for League Pass says regular season games, but I thought that was only by satellite and the preseason would have worked)

I plan on doing what I did last season. I ordered the more expensive arena feed version from the NBA website. It's worth it because you get to watch what's going on in the arena instead of just staring at the ad break slide on the Dish version. The main advantage to ordering from the website is you can go on a month by month basis and cancel if you get tired of it.

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

Seeing theres very little activity in the MLB threads, it wouldn't matter if I posted that the Astros didn't make the Playoffs ...

Theres more NFL info in the Pub section than in the Sports/NFL thread.

IF they go to 24 teams, and it looks like they will soon ....
Do we Really want Teams with 3 and 4 losses in the Playoffs ?
Is a 3-4 Loss team one thats able to win 4-5 more games against Top teams ?
Y
One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.
A 12 team playoff net should catch any undefeated team. The 12 team playoff also exposed that rankings suck. I mean, we kind of knew already that the rankings weren't particularly reproducible, but we now have the empirical evidence that the rankings suck because judging who is the best among a mickey mouse scheduled football season isn't a rational endeavor. So the 12 team playoff ensures most teams that should make it, do, including the mid-major undefeated team. 8 teams should be able to work as well, but puts greater risk at OSU and Alabama missing the playoff... can't have that.

Which is the run up to my main problem with the 24 team set up is that it is designed to keep the OSU's and Alabama's from missing the playoff. The cartels are ensuring widespread participation for their own cartels to increase the monetary reward to themselves. It is fixing the system while not fixing the outcomes, merely making the regular season game outcomes virtually irrelevant. Sure, a bye for winning the conference would be nice, but we've already seen that byes aren't that influential.
We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.
That is college football in a nutshell. Again, college football isn't about competition, it is about revenue. The entire setup is about making money, from regular season squash games against local jobbers like the WWF days to tax exempt bowl games.

And to add to the first world woes, the college football cartels have made being a College Football fan even more expensive... so they can get paid more.

Nah, you just don't understand how ignore works, which is why you made your own NFL thread thinking there wasn't one 🤣

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.
