OK, I know with a diplexer(?) it will work, but the potential fly in the ointment is my OTA antenna is the Channel Master Stealthtenna 3010 w/pre amp (yes I need the amplifier). The power block for the pre amp is rated at 18VDC 70mA. How will that work or will/can it work? I don't think the LNB power supply from the reciever is 18V, is it?
Thanks as always for your help.

While all the stations are located on South Mountain, I'm in north Phoenix, about 30 miles from there. Also, one of the channels I want the most is technically a low power station (although it is as powerful as a low power station can be...).
So back to my original question, can I run the pre amp through a diplexer, if it allows DC through both side, and if I can, how would I configure it?
Thanks for your input!

Depends on what receiver you are using. I used to run my antenna with a Winegard 269 pre-amp, powered from the 722. The 722 is 13v-18v. No power inserter necessary. Just make sure that both of your diplexers are power pass-through. They have to be used in pairs; Antenna lead into the low side and Sat lead into the high side. Make your cable run (RG6 rated at 2300Mhz or better) and then split them back out with the low side going to the Antenna In and the High side going to Satellite In (just reverse of how they came in). If you are doing Dish HD, there will be another diplexer that splits the signal to both the 'satellite in' ports on the back of the receiver, don't let it confuse you. Leave it hooked into the receiver and just make sure the high lead goes into that diplexer.

Your 1st step should be to go to www.tvfool.com and then click "Check your address for free tv". Enter your address and it'll give you an awesome set of charts that will tell you exactly where to point everything and should help get a plan drawn up for you. Ignore the distance and look at the Power (dbm) rating on the stations that you want to get. You'll probably be limited to stations that are -35 or better, if you are pointing right at them. Looks like you need an antenna that does UHF/High-VHF if you want to get the nearest PBS and Fox affiliates. That Channel Master is just short of 5 feet wide, so you might have some decent luck.

If you've already got the equipment, hook it up and see where it gets you, though. If it doesn't, let us know before you start throwing any $$$ at it. Unfortunately, while your particular antenna might work great for most suburban settings, real life range for most antenna is about 60% of what the marketing claims are.

Amps prep signals before their cable runs. If the signals not there in the first place, no amount of amplification is going to make it appear. Your antenna is really going to be the limiting factor, I'm afraid.
S
Ok, so I played with Google Maps and discovered that Cave Creek is about 30 miles north of South Mountain, as the crow flies, so I used that to get an idea. I really think you are setting yourself up for frustration with the Channel Master. If it doesn't work pretty easily for you, don't waste a lot of time on it. They are all in the same spot, so if you can get a few but not another, there's not a lot of point to spending a lot of effort trying to tweak it. It should be pretty much all or nothing once you get it lined up. If you have problems, it's because your antenna is inadequate.

If it doesn't work, consider something like the Antennacraft HBU33/HBU44 or a Winegard 7694P. They'll run between $45-$60 on Amazon. A 4-bay or 8-bay antenna would be great for UHF, but I don't think they'd be very reliable for picking up the Fox and PBS stations.

If antenna size is going to be an issue, get an RCA ANT751. It's about a third the size of the ones I recommended, but it's about 90% as good from my personal experience. You should be able to find it at Wal-Mart for about $60 or on Amazon for about $45. It's sold here for $60 as the EZ HD antenna but it is the same thing:

EZ-HD TV Antenna.

The photos should give you an idea of how large it is. It reliably picks up signals as low as -50 dBm from my home (unamplified).

Good luck.
O
Question-If I have an amplified antenna I would need to use DUAL power passing diplexers with a 1000.4 system, correct? BOTH ports of the diplexer power passing, right?

Thanks!

All amplified antennas require external power. They key is to use an antenna that isn't amplified.

I use the antenna that Sears sells as the RCA ANT3020X. Radio Shack sold them for decades as the Archer VU-90. Reception-wise, it features the same distances as the Stealthtenna but doesn't require any power. It may also be more resistant to multipath as the beamwidth is quite a bit narrower.

Over the past few weeks, I have had problems connecting to streaming services (Netflix, HBO et al). When I go to the TV's native Channels, I have no problem. The Dish internet troubleshooter shows I have a good internet connection. I'm wondering whether it's an issue with my internet provider or a problem with the Dish software on the Hopper Plus. Anyone else seeing this?

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

It states the average amount they are under water is OVER $7,000. :eek

Personally, I tend to be the type that drives a vehicle for a lot of years....do my own oil changes and other fluid changes. Just replaced the spark plugs and a couple coils. Youtube is great for things like this.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Lately my eight year old Dell laptop has been shutting off even when I have a full battery. I have had to keep it plugged up all the time to keep this from happening. Any idea what is causing this? I replaced the battery about three years ago.

A recalibration might be needed. Even if it shows full, the individual cells may have become unbalaced. And the BMS chip in the battery reports false information to the pc.
Try this. Start it up in the bios/uefi and leave it there until the battery dies and it shuts off.
It might just keep running longer than in Windows. Or run for a short while and shut off.
If it's the first case. Probably just needs a balancing. If the latter, the pack might just be dead.
Not throwing stones but perhaps just a cheaply constructed battery with substandard cells. Could be.

Patience. Keep restarting it in bios/uefi until it won't fire up anymore.
Then plug the charger in and let it complete a full charge. And see what happens. If it's better.
Do the same thing one more time. Run it until it dies dead-dead. Then just let it charge, pc shut off.
When charged, it might be better. It might not be.

There are bench jigs that read the actual BMS and override it to let a tech manually monitor and charge the separate packs. They can also reset any "time bombs" in it that cause an otherwise good pack to show bad.
Maybe Santa will be good to me some year.

You might just need a new battery. Maybe the PC power management chip is going. A Dell common thing.
Leaving a laptop plugged in with a full battery is known to reduce the life. Asus for one recommends that you don't leave the charger plugged in all of the time even when shut down. And setting Windows to charge the battery to 85% instead of 100% increases life.
That's all I got.

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.

If you can restrict the DHCP address space to assign addresses to one end of the subnet (i.e. x.x.x.50+), you can manually assign the IP address on pretty much any operating system. This is a default behavior on several popular routers. As the Router Mini only supports 235 devices, I expect that's already done.

Another option is to use a router that supports PoE to power the antenna. This article discusses that option (under PoE Power heading):

Now that I've had the v5 kit with the Mini Router, it's not as bad as I first thought. Yes, no DHCP reservations, but you can set up multiple SSIDs that have separate IPv4 subnets, and like the big brother, you can select from 192.168.x.0/24 or 10.x.0.0/16 (where "x" is 1-4).

You can also split a subnet and have different SSIDs for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz channels to handle some IoT devices. I haven't discovered what subnet the 2nd NIC on the router assigns, I'm guessing it's the first subnet.
