In my opinion, V* service and equipment sucks. I decided to leave D* and switch to them because of the HD. Prior I was using an OTA to pick up 2 local channels, sometimes a 3rd. The quality with V* was nice, but the HD channels were the same after about 3 days. They do not provide local channels though w/o OTA though. I really didn't care about that, but looking back I realized I should not have gone through with it from my initial contact.

I called the 800 # to get service and gave the CS rep my info. I told him D* intalled my antenna on my roof no problem/ no charge and CS told me they could too. Installer would call me 1-2 days prior to confirm time/date. Evening before install I still had not heard from them so I called and was told I would have to pay $60 for roof install. I told them CS said I would not be charged, but since I had already taken time off for install (the reps in MD only install M-F 8-5pm) I went ahead with plan. Rep came out, D* came off the roof and V* went up. When installer installed the box, he said wait 30 min for download and all should be well, boxes can be temperamental if d/l does not go through. I left the boxes on for 2 hrs to be sure and all was good. Next day box 1 channels were mixed up (ESPN on CNN, MTV on MAX) so I called, waited about 5 min and spent about 30 min unplugging boxes, checking connections, going through reboots to finally fix the issue. Exactly 1 week later, Box 2 has access card problems. I unplug to reboot and nothing so I call V* AGAIN. Wait another 10 min on hold, go thorough same thing I did with other box for 30 min then told box issue. I have to take time off again after having box for 1 week to replace box. At that time I said cancel because if I have to keep calling and changing my schedule, it's not worth my time or me paying you. They told me about $250 cancel fee pre 6mos so I said they did not provide quality service I should not have to pay. After many email and calls wanting to talk to someone about this matter, I have not received a call back from anybody there about the fee. Since then they have done software upgrades and along with the upgrades, boxes have had to be unplugged so they work right or work at all. I have now gone back to D* with dish back up and EXTREMELY HAPPY !!! P.S. I'm also posting this to to the D*Forum under D* vs V*.

Another first time poster (same post on both Voom and D*) announcing his decision to quit. And saying that the equipment and the service su.. (you know what). Call me hard-hearted, but I don't have any sympathy. New subs need to do their homework and they should work with the installer. Did this guy NOT sign the acceptance form after the installer gave it to him to sign?

Anyway, he says he is now extremely happy. Good. Go be happy watching D* and report all the great viewing experiences on the D* forum.

Sorry

We are so Sorry you had a bad experience but as a new Voomer i am very happy with there PQ it is better then the rest i hope your are happy with the crappy Channel Lineup DirectTv has and i forgot there HD lineup sucks. :D
R
Other than HD PQ, what else can you give me that's great about Voom?

The picture quality is great on an HDTV, I do agree there. Customer service and being able to back up your product is also part of what you are paying for. If you can only do part of the job, why do it at all?? BTW, reading the guide was difficult on a standard 26" TV. Pic great, but guide sucked.

Only reason I switched to V* was because of the HD channels and I didn't want to pay outright to get the HD Receiver through Direct.

Yes, I did post the same to both, but that's because in fairness, I should be able to hear (and let others know) what I or they have experienced and the same thing was going to be said in either forum.

I did look up channel lineup, quality, service, and pricing, but I guess I did not go as in depth as I should have. From not being told complete information at the sales level to having equipment that really isn't reliable (c'mon, you shouldn't have to unplug all of your boxes after an upgrade), Voom isn't worth the headache and well worth paying to buy HD Receiver from Direct (as I now know).

All companies have issues at startup as I'm sure Direct and Dish had at first. Heck I remember Super TV when they shared a local channel and scrambled the signal after 6pm. But the point is they should let the consumer know of issues or problems that they are aware of before making the sale first.

First, let me say that everyone needs to do what they feel is best for their situtation. After all it's your money, so whatever makes you feel the happiest for your dollar.

I like Voom because of the great HD, and also because the SD is better than anything I ever got from Dish and at least as good as cable.

I switched to Voom because I my Dish mover install was cancelled 5 times with no guaranty of ever being installed in the near future, and they'd already had a ton of my money for 2 months, plus they wanted to charge me way too much for a second HD receiver. With Voom I got 3 receivers and install for $1.

* On my 27" SD set, I have no problem with the guide being clear.
* My customer service experiences with Voom have mostly been positive. Unlike many of my experiences with Dish and cable.
* The receivers have given me no more problem than Dish ever did. I've never had to unplug Voom's receivers, but I had to with Dish occassionally. On Voom I sometimes have to reset, with Dish I regularly had to pull my access card out and re-insert it.
* I get more HD than with Dish or the cable company, and at a price that is in the same range as both. I miss a few SD channels, but with all the HD, I only watch a few favorites now anyway.

Hard getting used to the new younger Gibbs, Mark Harmons son had the right look but I understand he didn't want the role.
Still I'm enjoying, pretty good job with Franks.

If it wasn't for what I want, I wouldn't need any of this.

Do I need a collection of handheld radios, scanners and speed enforcement countermeasures? Nope, but I want them. Very little, if any of the software used to interface with these devices is available on Linux.

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.

I'm sorry, but the Dock is optional. I run Arch Linux, and tbh, as someone without specific, niche needs like your radios, the GUI is really no different, and I worry less about my OS being infiltrated. The OS is less bloated; there is no OEM Software that I have to dig through to disable or remove; coding is not a massive pile of problems that require constant patching, and if there is a problem, I can easily fix it myself (ChatGPT is great for Linux or any programming issues), and setting it up to look the way I want it to does not take days/weeks. It takes barely an hour. Not to mention, a cold boot takes barely 30 seconds from Power on the being fully booted.

Ubuntu is a joke, btw

TRG would back this up better than I can, I'm sure
EarDemon
I have no OEM bloat, on CTO devices where I can access the drive, I order it with the smallest allowed drive and crack the device open throw the factory drive in the garbage and put in my own WD Black and install Windows from bootable media. For Windows bloat, I install Windows using the English - World option which limits preinstalled MS bloat.

Windows and Office features I wish to block, like CoPilot and Cortana, macro enabled Office files and others are blocked with GPOs.

Between keeping all software up to date, doing firmware updates, putting IoT devices on a separate VLAN, running Symantec Endpoint (say what you want about it, it's been good to me) and practicing safe hex, I'm vigilant but not paranoid about security.

With NVMe SSDs, my cold boot up time on all devices is under 30 secs as well. Fast boot disabled, BitLocker drive encryption enabled.

I have nothing against Linux, been paying with it on and off since 2004ish, it's just not the right solution for me.
HipKat
it's just not the right solution for me.
As I said above, and, FWIW, I run Win11 Pro and Arch on separate 250 GB NVME drives, using F8 to select which I boot to, with a 1TB SSD for storage, accessible to both OSs and a third formatted Nvme I want to use to learn Kali. It was much faster to setup Arch than it was to strip down Windows. Windows still takes much longer to boot.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Finished it this evening. General impressions with no story spoilers, but will spoil it anyways as it just came out today.

Not quite as impactful of a finale as past seasons I thought, we'll see how far down the rabbit hole things go as the latest plot twists and turns unravel. Thought this season had a full episode or two too much rom-com style disagreements, but it was more or less paid off later. Ultimately didn't enjoy that being more of a throughline in the stories this season compared to what I remember of the priors.

My least favorite of the 3 seasons, but still very good. Really wonder how far they'll go with things, hard to see a nuclear attack or something ever actually happening. They just had a better story to tell and more meaningful beats in the prior season.

Regarding the no sound bug when watching 4K HDR events or DVR recordings with Dolby set to ON:
I got rolled back to H708 last night after getting an email from the support team. It fixed the bug.

The email indicated that they believed they found the issue, and if the fix works, they would roll it out via an update in the coming weeks.

So... we should see that bug exterminated in the near future.

Hmmm, I'm not seeing anything like those events in our Hopper 3 guide for tonight or Saturday.🙁

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

edit — I now have the 148-01 4KFox events for Saturday, but not anything for 148-02 or 148-03 which don't even show as available channels. I do have 148-04 4KUSA.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Not a bit. IMO, apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only stick I with the Apple tv's is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is not worth sticking with it. Later, Apple!
