I've been reading a lot about this coat hanger antenna said to be better than most store bought antennas. I have a huge antenna I bought a couple years ago, one that I was told I would need to receive my local channels & tried finding the best spot possible but 1 channel is all I get reliably. I live 50 miles south of Seattle but I'm unable to pick up the local channels. The only one I do get is 40 miles nw from me. I live in the sticks and there's a lot of hills all around me.

But I've been reading that this coat hanger antenna along with a few other home made antennas, out perform some of the best aerial antennas on the market.
Has anyone here heard about this or have had any experience with this?

Also, I've read that nearly all TV channels are now UHF, even if their allocated TV station number is in the VHF range, the actual frequency is in the UHF range now since the transition. My antenna picks up all kinds of bands & frequency.

Maybe simpler is better.

Finally took a picture of my home made antenna. Used some wood, pvc, and rabbit fence with aluminum wire from the hardware store. I used plans for the dimensions found here:
Index of /~mclapp/Antennas/4baystuff

Antenna is about 30 miles from the transmitter, and in the basement pointing out a sliding glass door at a deck and more houses and trees. I have a Radio Shack signal booster plugged in to the output of the antenna, and get high 80's to mid 90's on the UHF channels, and mid to high 70's for the VHF channels. Don't have any real signal issues until it falls below 70. Without the signal booster I loose about 4 points on the scale.

I'm sure I can hit 100 on some UHF channels if I aimed just for them, but current direction just gets all of them reasonable. The VHF channels are the challenge with this design. It used to be just the whiskers, but when the move of some channels to VHF, I had to add the reflector in the back to pick them up.

If I would just put it on the upper floor and outside, it would get them all at 100.

Sept_22_2011_3618.jpg

the link above is a folder of a guy that posted or posts on avsforum and he and others did analysis of the designs. The one I made is really good for UHF, but needed the reflector for VHF. The folder above has some tips for both along with the reflector idea.
NotTy
So the reflector is for VHF reception?

What's the difference between using aluminum wire or 12 gauge copper house wire?

I now have my homemade antenna leaning against the house to get the ION channels & the big antenna is used to pick up 1 UHF channel. But my big antenna will pick up the ION channels real good but then I can't get channel 13 (UHF) because of the location. When I use a splitter, then my homemade antenna looses nearly all the signal so I either watch ION on W1 or switch antennas which is kind of a pain.

Your antenna looks so much cleaner than mine. I know mine will short out with the first rain we get but I don't want to put too much effort into this unless it's really going to work.

So my next question was going to be about the reflector as I was going to use a flat board with tin foil as shown on the one on internet that I copied from. But that seems like it would cause problems.

Anyway, thanks for that link.
Larry1
The reflector increases the signals from the front side and blocks the signals from the back. It is only UHF, but if you have some strong VHF signals you may also receive them.
Aluminum and copper wire are very simular in their performance. See this thread for discussion on materials to use.
Best Metals for Antennas: Performance, Soldering, Welding, Bending, Working - Digital Forum

A very large reflector and changing the size of the whiskers and spacing can help in picking up the VHF-Hi channels.
J
antenna height is very important. higher the better. get above the tree tops will help alot.
line of sight is very important

Without the reflector, the VHF signals were not strong enough to be picked up by the whiskers which were optimized for UHF frequencies. You don't want any solid reflector because of two things.
#1 wind loading is terrible if it will be outside.
#2 it doesn't appreciably assist at the frequencies we are talking about.

AVSforum has a good thread on making your own antenna. Some folks with actual equipment to plot antenna patterns did some testing and at the time I built this (2 or 3 years ago) this design was one of the best. If I had this mounted at a higher elevation, I wouldn't need one so big.

It is important to have the wiskers and the mess boxes very straight, and square. Any deviation creates losses in the antenna. The spacing of the whiskers and the mesh is also important. From what I recall, the further back the reflector can be from the main element, the higher the gain.

Long term I have a proper antenna that I need to mount in the rafters of my garage and have someone run the coax down into my utility room for distribution.

Copper vs Aluminum. I seem to recall that the gain, if any from copper wire was minimal. At the frequencies we are talking only the surface of the wire is involved. Copper certainly costs a lot more.

In that link that Larry posted, they discuss mclapp. The link I posted was to mclapps' files.

With the 1st Quarter Report just released, Dish lost another 180,000, now at 4.84 Million.

Sling now at 1.79 million subscribers, down approximately 190,000.

For comparison, YouTube TV now has about double the subscribers of Dish and Sling combined.

Why would Musk even want them?

Why would anyone pay anything for two providers that lose a million or more subscribers every year each?

Maybe Elon thinks satellite TV will do a come back. I bet he has a Hopper 3 and loves it. Apps keep going up on prices and you need more than one app to see everything you want to see. I think Satellite is the way to go.

My Joey 4 is installed on a bedroom tv.

The diamond buttons had been reset.

I thought this was unusual.

I had to reprogram the double diamond button for PIP which I watch.

No problem.

PIP feature on the Joey 4 had been used to watch two channels at once which I thought was the limitation being only two channels vs.Hopper 3's multi-view four channels.

This time when I selected the PIP feature I noticed an option for Multi-View?

Could this be?

Yes it could.

This software update does this.

Multi-view PIP (4 channels) Is Now Available on Joey 4.

This is freaking awesome and very surprising!!!

Very wonderful for me.

Unfortunately do to NDA's I can't discuss beta features until they are released to the public. But lets just say the DISH team is doing some amazing work. :)

Received this e-mail 3 days ago... At the bottom, it says limited to one Multi-view session per household. How does it work if someone had Hopper 3, Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus, Wired Joey 4 and a Wireless Joey 4 for example? Can they all do Multi-view session at the same time?

That's because the one good thing the administration is doing is finally going after the fake and non-domiciled CDL drivers, opening the door to hire more valid drivers and hopefully will push the rates back up.

Ok, I'm bored .... actually - to be more precise - I'm bored of eating the same rotation of 9 or 10 meals that are currently my "go-to" meals. My wife works the long hours - I work from home as and when i feel like it ... which means i generally do most of the cooking ... and so by default - i also make out the shopping list ...

We cook at home 5 or even 6 nights a week - but we always seem to fall back on the same old tried and tested "quick and easy but tastes ok" meals. Week in week out.

Pot Roast - mash and Peas.
Spaghetti
Chicken Pasta in cheese sauce.
Curry & rice
(these are some of mine)

Now it's not that I'm not adventurous in the kitchen ... I'll try anything once or twice ... but we all do it. Unless your name is Martha Stewart or Rachel Ray .. we all eventually fall back on our 8-10 favorite "meals"

So i thought - if we shared some of our own go-to meals with each other ... we might be able to add a few "new" ones to our own arsenal of meals.

So again - I ask you ...

What's for dinner tonight ?

Please give me something new to add to my rotation ... its our weekly shop tomorrow - so i want to pull together a few idea's and try and eat a meal each day next week that I've never had before .. or at least something that is not on my current "go-to" meal plan.

What meal do you always seem to fall back on in your house ? Maybe its something that I've never tried or not had in a while. I need inspiration !! I've got a blank shopping list in front of me - and nothing sounds good .. HELP !

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Tried the Adjust Screen settings and the green bar was still present. Did have a random day when the green bar was gone, but it came back. Did look at the TV setting and found I could stretch the screen a little where the green bar was gone, but it does cut off things across the edges of the picture slightly. Likely will start shopping for a new TV as mine is close to 20 years old and the Dis Remote doesn't seem to like the TV.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.

I suggest you get an LG Oled 4k TV. You will love the picture on this thing from all angles in the room. The picture is the best I've seen ever. I have the B 3 series 55 inch TV and it was on sale in the fall of 2024 for like $749.00 - because they sell off their older models when they reach end of year.

I even bought one for my parents. They had a huge living room and sit at the weirdest angles with their furniture and the viewing angle was a problem using just about any TV we tried, but not with the LG Oled Tv. They love the picture. Walmart sells them and so does Amazon.

Except they haven't priced out the market, the viewers are there and broadcasters are willing to pay. If Fox doesn't pay then the games will be elsewhere.
With the expansion of NFL games to Every day of the week ...

Shouldn't the Sunday Ticket be reduced in price by at least 25% ...
This doesn't make any sense.

It's a false premise, 25% of the games haven't left Sunday, and makes no effort to tie number of games to the price - for a sport that continues to grow / maintain it's popularity... which has helped justify increases to the package cost.

I'm all ears, I'd love to hear him justify suddenly cutting the price 25%, lol. Make it make sense. Just because a game moved from Monday to a Wednesday this year isn't it.

The game is not growing in the US. It is exceedingly popular, but it has hit the ceiling. Hence games on other continents where room for growth is much greater. So the NFL transmissions rates in the US increase like household fiber optic Internet costs increase... because they can.

And we are the ones who take the impact of it.

Ok now demonstrate that with data. If it's hit the ceiling and not declining, then where is the justification for an arbitrary 25% decrease to NFLST based on the sentiment of game inventory changes, rather than actual data? Also, maintaining popularity and demand and expanding viewership overseas aren't mutually exclusive efforts.

Isn't this when the market fights back?

Coming back to this - there is 1 fewer game in the Sunday afternoon window compared to last year. 197 down from 198. If that's a bridge too far for some then then they should absolutely speak with their wallet. Speaking personally, we're probably passing on NFLST this year, depending on the deals available - life's just busier for us and we get what we want from Red Zone 95% of the time. While I don't support the arguments as presented, I'll admit the irony that my withdrawal will feed them.

I'm not supporting an argument saying costs should go down any arbitrary amount. I'm saying the up'ing of the cost is getting a bit much and we, the actual consumer, are the ones who pay for it down the line.

This is the problem with "competition". It doesn't help the consumer in this case, it helps the *insert league*.

Ok, but I'm not disagreeing with that. All I am saying is I'm not surprised they're getting more and more for their programming, and it makes sense to maximize the value while at it's most popular - with no signs of it waning.

In response we've gotten:
- The government should largely ruin the sport by repealing the antitrust exemption because billionaires are bad - ignoring the harm it would do to both players and fans
- Drop NFLST 25% because there's 1 less game on Sundays

:what

Speaking of maximizing revenue, Fox picked up the rights to broadcast games in Mexico.

Well certainly, any product producer is going to want more money and the NFL is the franchise for programming.

And I'm quite happy they have NFL+ which allows me to watch every game commercial free and in less than an hour. I have to wait for the game to end, but that is an easy cost to absorb.

What I find odd is that I felt the whole pay a large amount for exclusive rights was a source of our higher cost. But now the NFL is diversifying the product, providing access to more services... making it more pricey for us. Networks and services are paying high premiums for splintered NFL content.
