I am most likely going to be upgrading to a Hopper/Joey setup in March.

At the same time, I am planning convert my coax wiring from "through the floor" to proper wall plates with RF connectors. When the service technician is installing new wiring and receivers, will he wire the wall plates up for me, or should I have the coax wired to the wall plates already? I have no problem doing it myself, but I don't want to waste my time running coax cable if the technician will do it himself, especially since I know I will need an entirely new MoCA configuration for the Hopper/Joey.

So I guess my question really boils down to whether basic in wall wiring is part of a standard Dish installation?

Most installers will do wall fishing as part of the installation but some will try to say its "custom" work and therefore going to cost more. I think Dish includes one wall fish free but over that they charge custom fees. You can do it yourself, just be sure to use quality rg6 cable. You could even just run the lines and have the tech supply the fittings and wall plates because they need to be approved high frequency barrels so he's gonna have to change your wall plates if you buy and install them, this should save you some $$ not buying wall plates and fittings.

You're better off doing your own wall fishing if you are able to do that - save yourself a lot of aggravation down the road. You don't know how experienced of a tech that you'll get, some are not able to wall fish. In the end, you will at least cut the installation time way down if you're prepared ahead of time. As far as cable, no need to run all new cable except possibly at the Hopper location - it needs to be Rg6 swept to 3 ghz - doesn't matter at the Joey locations.

In all but the simplest cases doing wall fishes require skills that rookie satellite and cable installers aren't taught. Also they aren't issued the specialized tools that can make even a tough wall fish possible.

Older electricians that have been in the residential business for awhile can often can work magic. I had an electrician run new electrical service to a the finished attic of a two story home. House was built in 1906. Studs and fire stops hard as rocks. Plaster and lath construction. Only took him a little over an hour to run 100' of BX from the attic to the main service panel. The electrician didn't have to cut any holes in the walls to facilitate pulling the BX, but he had all the right tools including a large assortment of flexible drill bits and extensions.

The electrician even had a cross bow to fire pull lines across ceilings to avoid having taking down tiles or crawling through tight spaces.

In contrast when I moved into a apartment and the landlord wouldn't let the cable company wrap the building so the poor installer tried for four hours to do a wall fish on an exterior masonry wall. He had no specialized tools. Biggest problem was he didn't even have a right angle drill so he had to drill through the header at an angle when he was in the attic and when he tried fish the RG6 it always got stuck. He might have been able to make it work if he had had a small chain and a magnet to catch a pull chain dropped through the wall from the attic at the opening for the wall box. To top it off when the installer finished the his van would not start as the safety blinkers and flashers had drained its battery.
S
I would do it myself. I'd even go so far as to buy modular wallplates and run an ethernet and/or hdmi cable at the same time, depending on your needs. I'm a big believer in doing things once, the right way. The modular wallplates generally are high frequency connections. I did all of mine before I was a dish employee. There are techs that can do it, but typically nobody is going to want to, especially if they see lines/holes in the floor. Of course you run an equal or greater chance you'll get someone who's been installing for 3 weeks and has no clue, and will spend hours trying to use the flex bit and fish the line.

Your choice. lol.

Im sure it depends on how many locations, size of house, and how big a tip you plan on dishin out.

Three months ago my installer said a wall fish would cost $70 each as per Dish policy, he manage to use the existing cables installed by me or the cable company years before, He was here for almost 5 hours to install one 722k connected to two TVs. He did have some problems locating the cables in the attics, new cables would have been faster.

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Finished it this evening. General impressions with no story spoilers, but will spoil it anyways as it just came out today.

Not quite as impactful of a finale as past seasons I thought, we'll see how far down the rabbit hole things go as the latest plot twists and turns unravel. Thought this season had a full episode or two too much rom-com style disagreements, but it was more or less paid off later. Ultimately didn't enjoy that being more of a throughline in the stories this season compared to what I remember of the priors.

My least favorite of the 3 seasons, but still very good. Really wonder how far they'll go with things, hard to see a nuclear attack or something ever actually happening. They just had a better story to tell and more meaningful beats in the prior season.

Regarding the no sound bug when watching 4K HDR events or DVR recordings with Dolby set to ON:
I got rolled back to H708 last night after getting an email from the support team. It fixed the bug.

The email indicated that they believed they found the issue, and if the fix works, they would roll it out via an update in the coming weeks.

So... we should see that bug exterminated in the near future.

Hmmm, I'm not seeing anything like those events in our Hopper 3 guide for tonight or Saturday.🙁

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

edit — I now have the 148-01 4KFox events for Saturday, but not anything for 148-02 or 148-03 which don't even show as available channels. I do have 148-04 4KUSA.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Meh. The 4Ks I have will do everything that these do that I need them to do.

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

The only thing I can see that is compelling is the AV1 decoding done in the A19's hardware instead of the current ATV4K's processor.

Not a bit. IMO, apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only stick I with the Apple tv's is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is not worth sticking with it. Later, Apple!

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

For quite a while now, people with a VIP211k have been losing their recordings on their activated external HDDs... even when there's nothing physically wrong with HDD. I believe this is an intentional and underhanded tactic that Dish is pulling in an attempt to force users away from the VIP211k.

They are obviously regretting that they ever let users have a "non-dvr" dvr in the first place. You would think they would be happy charging you a $40 one time fee... and then be happy letting the customer be the one responsible for HDD failures.

Dish clearly hates the 211k bitter-clingers. This recording deletion problem is intentional (IMO), and I think it is just one more tool that they are using. Hopper and a 2-year agreement... that's what they want you to have. Think about that... a 2-year agreement... with a company $30 Billion in debt (that's with a B). What happens when all that debt causes them to drop the channel that may have been your whole reason for having Dish in the first place? Guess who's stuck with a service that no longer suits their needs... for the remainder of the 2-year agreement.

On top of that, they don't want you to install it yourself. I purchased and installed all my equipment myself. That used to be common. Now, they lie to me and tell me that my dish must be updated to use a Hopper. Funny thing is... they don't even know what dish I have because they didn't install it, and I didn't tell them. If you ask what type of dish/LNBs the hopper needs... good luck getting an answer. All they know is that whatever you have needs to be upgraded by an installer.

It is quite apparent to me that they care much more about staying in their box, than they do working with the customer. That's too bad, because it hasn't always been that way. It's like they are totally unaware of the current business environment that they are trying to compete in.

I have been a customer since 2010. I will be cancelling my service before the next period. Yeah, I know, my $1,200 a year won't make a difference to them. It just seems like they have forgotten who needs who, especially when you consider the competition in today's streaming world. But hey, they will have succeed in forcing me off the 211k.

Actually, it is. A couple of people PMed me when I posted this, and when I asked for an address, they never responded. Then I just sort of let it go. Send me a PM to continue the discussion

Well, after nine months of being on pause, I finally figured out that I was wasting $5 a month. So I cancelled. For the first time since 2010, I no longer have a Dish account.

I do have to say that I did appreciate the account pause option. That just gives a person some time to see what the fallout of cancelling will be... without having to go all the way over the cliff first.

Since I never once had an "oh shoot, I need Dish Network for..." moment, the decision was a lot easier.

Funny enough, when I called to cancel (for real, not playing the pricing game), all of a sudden, they were offering me deals that I was told before that I couldn't get without changing out my VIP211k. Now, I could have had those specials with them just sending me a new card for the receiver. LOL!

Of course, my mind was already made up because of having not missed the service while on pause. That, and the fact that I bet the 211k still kills recordings.

All in all, I'm glad that I had Dish for all those years. I just outgrew the need, and they pressed the issue by deleting recordings. I would have eventually went this route without the deleted recordings issue. But, for sure, that did hasten the outcome.

I'll still pop in at this site from time to time. Believe it or not, I still have a C/Ku BUD that I intend on playing with again if life ever slows down.
