I have an AZBox connected to a Stab HH120 that is not working correctly. The AZBox Ultra works fine with a fixed dish but with the Stab it works sometimes, not at all at other times and moves back and forth over the requested position much of the time. It over shoots the goal as often as not and then spends more time than I have trying to hone in on the satellite. It worked well for a long time before this started to happen. As it continues to get power and signal to move (rather than not moving at all) I tried switching the AZBox OS/firmware from 9.5309 to Enigma 2 with no improvement. I can't find any information identifying which device/software is controlling various aspects of the movement so don't know how to isolate the problem.

This is a come-and-go hobby with me so, being one of the constants, I may well be the problem. Is there something I have simply forgotten? If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

On another note...as a person with lots of Linux experience I am not certain I would want to change over to Enigma without it. One might get the feeling of being a stranger in a strange land. On the other hand it could be great if you like such things.

I have a work around that suits me for now. Enigma has a feature called "Search East" and "Search West". You plug in the details of a satellite and transponder and hit the button. It stops at the best signal, you add it to the list of locations and just add the address (001, 002) to the satellite definition. It ain't USALS but it works like a charm; no back and forth over the station. Sometime I will try to figure out what happened to the USALS, it started on the official software and was still there under Enigma.

Thanks again for all your help.

jwwwbrennan,

I didn't think about non-factory firmware! The Enigma may incorporate a feature to search for signal and peak it. Sorry, but I didn't even think to ask about this.

RADAR

RADAR, I must say Enigma is great software for those interested in having a peek at what the CPU and other electronic tidbits are talking about while you are being distracted by television. It is fast on blind scans but recording an event in a few days on transponders without EPG is limited (or my understanding of setting it is) so I am going back to 5309. It's very good; just designed for those interested in a different aspect of the hobby. It would be nice if the 5309 people would speak with the Enigma people. They both run on Linux so it should be Open Source with the code available to everyone to use and modify. I think that is still one of the few rules for running on Linux.

Edit: I found the screen for setting a recording according to time and date so this software does pretty much everything for me.

Thanks and Happy Satellite Juggling

Just fyi, I had a stab 120 where the nut inside holding the main shaft to the gear came loose. I realized the shaft was loose when trying to re-align the dish, couldn't get it to track the arc properly at all, and there was too much play. I removed the motor and brought it home to take apart on the bench where I was able to fix the issue by removing the shaft and tightening the nut that pre-loads the bearing, cleaned everything up as much as possible, and re-lubed the bearing with lubriplate. Reinstalled the shaft and re-torqued the nut (added loc-tite), re-assembled the housings and re-installed. Been working perfect for two years or so. The Stab 120 is a good design and works great with the Azbox and USALS as Radar says.

Not sure about the enigma software yet. Tempted to try it...

-C.
There was a spring that minimizes backlash; can't quite remember exactly how it is installed but take note on dis-assembly so you know how it goes back together later.
jwwbrennan
Cham,

The unit has never been quicker just using the predefined positions and goto commands. I always thought the motor was a little slow but now it is surprisingly quick getting into position and returning a stable signal. Switching between transponders with this software is also faster than it has ever been.

I can see how Enigma would be intimidating to anyone with limited Linux experience but it is very good and decidedly robust. There were a few spots during installation where I wondered what would I think if I hadn't been through here before. Much of your effort might be given over to understanding software rather than capturing and processing signals from space. There is a file called "how to use azup.rar" that includes the very brief installation by number process of installing Enigma and reinstalling the original system if required. Before trying anything you may want to get azup running on your computer. Depending on your operating system (64 bit in particular) it may be the biggest challenge in the whole installation.

Good luck,

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

I'm sure I will watch at least the first episode but I am not optimistic.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

Where would this "dirt" come from? Dead skin and dandruff?

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Stargate SG-1 cancelled, Atlantis renewed

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

I have gotten back into watching SG-1 and I have recorded most of the episodes to binge watch. What episodes are about the Antarctic or was this a movie? Also where could I watch the SG-1 movies?

They didn't sell many, they were pricey and not out long. Quickly got replaced by the Hopper.
T
They were high-end specialty, somewhat buggy and the 612/622/722 just overwhelmed it in popularity.
HipKat
I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

Well if it is because of reliability that wouldnt shock me.I went through 5 or 6 of them in little over 2 years. I loved the Sling when it worked! Saved lots of money having it in the day. That was probably 15 or 16 years ago?

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Was down due to an emergency update at the ISP. They did email me seconds before they took it down and apologized for the short notice.

However once the server was back online NGINX failed to start.

I was at the grocery store and just rebooted the entire server and everything came back up again.

Just got home from the grocery store I will bring in the groceries and then take a look at what NGINX failed the first time.

Ok checked it out and for some reason the web server (NGINX) tried starting before the DNS resolver fully loaded. This is why it worked when I rebooted the machine.

Thanks to ChatGPT it had me change the NGINX config to prevent this from happening again.

With that said I can't prevent the ISP from doing emergency upgrades which was the cause of all of this.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.
