Watching WUSA tonight and seeing both on-screen crawls and ads asking viewers to call Dish and WUSA may be off satellite on Oct. 8...

Any other Gannett stations running similar ads?

No one knows just how much of the increase being asked for (200%-300%) was actually agreed to by Dish. As Dish stated, they were willing to go to 200% but not 300%, so it was probably somewhere in between. Also, the fact that Dish was willing to agree to 200% says that most of it was just market rates. Sure in the big picture, many local channel owners will try to use AutoHop as a bargaining chip, but how many of them will really succeed? The big picture also gets muddied by the current AutoHop lawsuits, so it's too early to claim that AutoHop will be the death knell of lower prices.

I'm not saying that the auto hop will cause the death knell of lower prices. I am saying that when all the local channels come up for renewal , that the auto hop threat will be used in order to extort better carriage deals from DISH , than they have ever been known to pay in the past. Now when you add all these companies over the country up , that is going to be a lot of extra money that somebody is going to pay. It won't be DISH paying these added costs. It will be you and me , the subscriber. I am saying that the increase next February ,will most likely include an increase to cover these added costs for DISH. The ironic thing is that the auto hop threat was supposed to be used to keep prices low by DISH and now it is being used as a threat to extort better carriage fees for the local channels.

THANK GOD they don't use auto hop on the other national cable channels, like TNT , USA ,Syfy etc . Can you imagine how much they would ask to keep their channels on the air ,because of auto hop feature being used? It would be the end of DISH, because when DISH passed the increased carriage cost on to their subs, they would leave to avoid paying the increased costs. IN the end I see DISH dropping auto hop feature, in order to avoid continuing to pay the increased costs for local channels. Not right now. But look at Blockbuster. Now, Charlie is saying it might of been a mistake to buy this failing company. I see a similar statement about the auto hop feature , but will probably never hear him say it publicly. It will just be turned off via software someday.

1. That sounds like a chicken little death knell to me.

2. Again, you read that "somewhere", yet are using it as fact, just like you said earlier that your opinions are not fact, then why are you treating someone else's opinion as fact?

Okay I give up since your are obsessed with what you consider facts. I guess I should now preface all my posts with "In my opinion" in order to discuss any ideas I have. Will see what happens come the new year and the next price hike. But mark my words, like all gimmicks that DISH rolls out and uses in their advertising campaigns (Blockbuster, TURBO HD, SLING LOADED 922 , DISHONLINE/TV Everywhere) they will drop their focus on the auto hop feature as well ,when it becomes to costly to keep fighting the added costs to keep it going. I don't see the auto hop feature staying around if all the local channels start pulling the same tactics as Gannett.

After all if this auto hop feature was going to be an easy software update , then DIRECTV , the #1 satellite company, would of already added the auto skip feature to their Genie receivers. Why didn't they? They will let DISH fight the legal battles and take on all the disputes over channel carriage , before they jump on the bandwagon. Because why ? THey don't want their costs to go up. They see the writing on the wall and they are more than happy to let DISH pay the costs. Every Local channel they lose in a dma , is another reason for a sub to churn to DIRECTV ,if they still want satellite tv.

Sorry about the whole "fact" symantics. What I should have said was where and who did you read that from?

We are in agreement that the implementation of autohop is a high risk/reward proposition for Dish, yet I don't see one of the outcomes being ballooning rate hikes (in relation to other providers or market rates). A leopard does not change its spots, and Dish is not going to suddenly start giving in on carriage deals. It will be an interesting battle to be sure.

I have thought that too. I may not see the same outcome as you do, but it's a rocky one....

Yeah, heaven forbid that they are prevented from blatently double-dipping their revenue stream. Cable channels have a lower percentage of revenue from commercials compared to subscription revenue than broadcast channels, so they shouldn't protest as much as broadcast channels, right? :D

:D

I'm glad Dish did not implement the skip feature for cable, yet. My hope is unless the Court calls it illegal, they won't be the only one with a feature like that, making threats by channels over it less meaningful. If Direct TV was a little more on the side of it's subscribers, and a little less a follower, they would implement their version. (assuming the info from Scott is correct)

I don't remember where I read all the different things about the reasons for auto hop being used for DISH's advantage in channel negotiations. The point is I can extrapolate and speculate what will happen based on the past history of DISH . DISH uses gimmicks that they promote in their advertising campaigns. IN the past we used TURBO HD . Then there was TV EVERYWHERE. Then last year it was Blockbuster@home . As you see all have been dropped from the main focus of their advertising . I see the same future for auto hop ,considering that the networks are suing them and the locals channels are extorting more carriage fees then DISH has ever paid. I don't think that DISH will continue to pay higher fees to carry the locals and not pass it on to the subs. If they pass it on to subs , this will force their "low priced " leader status to be in jeopardy. So this will force them to lose the auto hop feature ,eventually. Time will tell if I'm right .

Bought a Motorola G Power 5G android phone as a spare and to use for some work stuff. Was tired of work stuff cluttering up my iPhone 16 Pro. Didn't take long to remember why I originally went to an iPhone. 4hrs doing updates to step up from Android 14 updates to Android 15 and latest updates for 15. Ads on the Play store above the app I searched for is something I don't really remember from the last android phone I had 13-14 yrs ago. Face ID on iphone has spoiled me too.

I just wanted a cheap phone mainly for work pictures or I would have got an 17 Pro and used my 16 for work stuff, but no need to spend that kind of money. I don't even have cellular service on the Motorola, just using it on WiFi and added my google voice number to it with the app.

Apple made me an offer I couldn't refuse. For whatever reason, they bumped up the Trade-in value of my iPhone 13, first to $180, and just recently to $195. So I took the Apple Cash from Apple card savings and the $195 trade-in and have a shiny new iPhone 17 nothing. The base 256 GB is more than enough for my needs.

Now I'm on the lookout for a leather case for it…

If it wasn't for what I want, I wouldn't need any of this.

Do I need a collection of handheld radios, scanners and speed enforcement countermeasures? Nope, but I want them. Very little, if any of the software used to interface with these devices is available on Linux.

To each there own but I've found that Windows can't do much more than Linux can. Can't have everything. ☹️

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

I hope you don't believe that makes it wonderful (especially when you're using workarounds for Microsoft's malfeasance).

I use LibreOffice as opposed to Microsoft office (even in Windows) because it's UI is like the Office of old, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is (in a manner of speaking). The ribbon was one of the worst ideas to come out Redmond.

I used to pin the C: drive to the Win Taskbar and it would open in cascading style

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
