This has be mentioned before with many CC users agreeing, but I am feeling stronger than ever about this: Please Dish, will you add the other options for CC characters on the Hopper that you do on the ViP's. Specifically, at least the DROP SHADOW options. I use translucent, and without the drop shadows the CC characters can not been seen clearly in far too many instances depending upon the image on screen. At first, it seemed this didn't happen too often, but the last several months, it is happening far too often and makes it frustrating to watch. Other CC users have stated the same and they know what I'm talking about and having a solid color background block even more of the image on screen.

Any what, let's hope Dish brings the CC options up to at least the ViP options.

Also, yellow is not yellow. It's orange. On the VIP's, it was yellow, which is extremely visible, more visible even than white. Orange, otoh, is not.

As for placements of the CC on screen: unless the technology has changed, it is the CC provider (sometimes a human operator or, more recently, a computer) at the time of captioning is the one who determines where on the screen the captions will appear, so Dish or any other MVPD really can't do much, if anything about it. Some caption operators are just plain LAZY or barley competent (or overwhelmed with work by the captioning company/organization) that they fail to follow the GUIDELINES (there is NO standard) that is supposed to be CC usually at bottom of screen, but when a title is superimposed on the video, such as one identifying the speaker, the operator is SUPPOSED to then temporarily move the position of the CC so that the superimposed title can be read clearly, sometimes as far as the very top of the screen. Then, once the super is removed, move the CC stream back to the original position. Uh, yeah, this takes a few extra keystrokes, but some captioners are better than others, but it seems to be getting WORSE the last few years. TV network fictional drama and sit-com shows seem to have the best CC's that follow guideline and will move CC when necessary in almost every instance, perhaps, because the studios are involved, although sub-titles are replacing CC for digital connections while retaining CC for the analog outputs, in many cases. Meanwhile, a lot of programming on History or H2, as examples, are filled with programming that seem to constantly have CC's obscuring titles. Further, if the CC changes or scrolls is also determined by the CC operator.

Now, to be fair, I have been referring to PRE-recorded, pre-produced content where and operator does, indeed, have the opportunity to change the position of the CC so that all titles of a video are never obstructed by CC. However, for live broadcasts, one should NOT expect the CC to be moved because there just isn't the opportunity to do this without falling behind. In such cases the CC operator usually places the CC slightly higher so that one can see tickers and other superimposed titles of, say a newscast.

So, the only thing we can do when we see CC's below par or not being moved to a place so as not to obscure titles on a video, is to directly contact the CC organization/company and be specific in telling them what we've observed and to please take corrective action for future programs. Often, the name of the organization or company who preformed the CC service is at the end of the program. However, if it isn't provided, we may have to contact the channel on which the program appeared, complain to them and ask for the name of the organization who performed the CC service and then content them.

Lastly, the KTLA Morning News is suffering TERRIBLE with a horrid CC operator who skips several seconds, sometimes approaching a minute (the stream absolutely STOPS as if the operator is overwhelmed), of dialogue and audio from both live in-studio segments and location reports as well as seeming barely able to keep up as all sorts of errors are apparent. It's s if the operator just give's up trying to do anything and just wait for more easy audio to CC. I have noticed this for the last few months. Yes, KTLA Morning News presents a challenge trying to keep up with talent banter and silly laughing and Sam Rubin's garbled speech (the most UN-broadcast sounding individual on the planet. He doesn't know how to speak for on air), but past CC operators did a great job with what I would call a 95% accuracy. Of course, they are often in another part of the country (it used to be listening by traditional land line telephone that isn't always the most clear, and don't know how to spell our local cities and streets, etc. because of the legacy of having been a part of Spain and Mexico before the USA. It is sometimes annoying, but often a RIOT of laughter seeing how they struggle and PAUSE to spell the place or street and it is so badly Anglicized. It's clear they are in Iowa or Nebraska or somewhere with cheap wages and cheap cost of living. :)

What's the deal with the UI when turning off CC. It is not properly positioned to click the off button. It has been broken for versions.

Partially correct. Yes. The provider sets the CC parameters, which includes the position. But, it also includes color, background, etc. And, those are user configurable on the Hopper. They were even more configurable on the VIP series. And, I've seen playback SW/HW that have position as a user-configurable option. So, there is probably no reason that it can't be a setting on the Hopper, as well.

Gary, I was experimenting with my Samsung DLP. I have been seeing ORANGE. That is with "Movie" setting but with "Standard" setting the captions are yellow. I choose Movie because the experts on AVS have said Movie gives the truest-to-life colors, i.e., flesh tones. It uses a lot more Red. In fact so much red that the first LED to burn out is Red. It has twice the fins to cool it as the Green and that more than the Blue LED. I don't know how that works out on the rotating color wheel versions. I have only replaced the Red once--knock on wood. BTW, Samsung has not made these sets for a number of years.

But it does show that the perceived color depends on the TV's setup. I haven't looked up your equipment. Just thought you might like to know.

I've started to like the orange but it requires an opaque black background, which I do not like. Why the 722 was more yellow IDN.
The 921 had the most settings but the 722 allowed setting the edge color, which chose black on a translucent or transparent background. I find this lettering better defined.

What is the "SW/HW that have position as a user-configurable option" on playback devices, I presume? Is it proprietary? That would require licensing fees from others (like Echostar) to include such features on their STB's, and they won't want to pay. Very interesting. This would be great news if you can pass along the specifics. Please respond.

Let's remember that SUBTITLES from DVD's or Blu-rays do have placement options, some only to a certain degree, but I've never seen it for Closed Captions. On-line streaming CC is a DIFFERENT STANDARD that may allow for placement options. The CC that is output from Dish and others via analog output is still using the old analog standard of line 21 with all its limitations and that standard never provided placement options. The CC output with a digital stream is different, especially HD STB's do provide minor and easy to implement user optional enhancements such as color, size, and font, but AFAIK it still merely overlays the CC data just as it would appear on the old line 21 system, meaning no placement option. Again, yes, APPEARANCE options, but no PLACEMENT options.

I am unaware of any MVPD STB that can change placements of CC to a high degree or any degree. Given that nearly all the digital devices that can output CC today can offer such an array of color, size, and font options, while NOT providing any placement options, may suggest there is more to changing the placement of the CC than we think, or it is still "fixed" at the time of captioning and involves greater complexity to overcome or alter the code that the CC operator has determined where the CC should appear. Or placement may violate law regarding mandated CC display, and the MVPD's just don't dare go there. Or altering placements of the CC may violate the copyrights that the caption services hold for their captions; this seems the most likely reason we don't have placement settings IMHO. One of the keys to CC is their placement, and the captioning services may feel they that since they are (SUPPOSED to) following guidelines on where to put the captions, and it is best left to them and altering placements or allowing a placement feature crosses the line into copyright infringement as it relates to their display and may be explicitly forbidden by the organization/company creating the CC's. Again, I subscribe to that theory.

OK, we don't really know. But if anyone can find the definitive answer, we are all listening.

This started a couple months ago. I have 2 H3s on one network, both with 2 EHD identical 3 TB seperately powered so all recordings are accessible by all 4k & J4s (8 of them).

On one H3 (not the main one that controls the MOCA network), after it reboots, it doesn't recognize it has two EHDs plugged into it. Rebooting the EHD by their power source doesn't fix it. Resetting the network doesn't. Software h3 reset doesn't fix it. Rebooting MOCA h3 doesn't fix it but so far, after 3+ cold boots (unplug pwr to H3 with unrecognized EHDs), it finally it figures out they are plugged into it. BUT.... Then when you open a program it only partially shows series and episodes, but instead of showing recordings, it only shows upcoming airings. HELP!!!!

Thanks JohnGalt1234 - That's interesting. I wonder are the Boot Strap versions different between a Hopper 3 only and a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup as I have the later. I guess when charlesrshell is able to since he has both setups, he can do the test. Unless the bootstrap version is tied to when the specific Hopper 3 is manufactured, in my case, mines is from February 2016 when it was installed.

At least Google Search AI is saying the bootstrap version will never change and unique to each Hopper 3.

This is probably why different people seem to either have the issue or they don't because the bootstrap code could also be tied to the hardware revision and
components other than the internal HD.

JohnGalt1234 - So you basically have 2 Hopper 3's. The CasinoH3 is the one that is Hopper 3 only while Master Bedroom is a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup.
Master Bedroom uses Android TV (ATV) software so the DISH part is actually a app and will behave differently as you can probably tell the Guide's are different on the Master Bedroom which will resemble the same guide used on other ATV devices such as the Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4. If I am correct, the CasinoH3 is the one with the problem since you did say the one dated 09/05/2026 is the naughty one while 08/15/2026 named Master Bedroom is the nice one. Usually I would expect the CasinoH3 to be the one without the problem because it's Hopper 3 only and Master Bedroom would be the one with problems because it has the Hopper Plus involved. That is why they behave differently because CasinoH3 is running the native Hopper 3 software while Master Bedroom is running the Android TV software and also it runs a app called DISH known as package com.dish.atv.launcher, the version for mines is P15403 2026100917 so it's probably the same version as the Hopper Plus software version with the date of October 9, 2026, not sure what the 17 means except maybe revision 17?

This explains it better than I can. Sorry, had to take all the ads out.

As I understand it, the android is just the display signal from the hopper+. I can disconnect the H+ and plug the hdmi directly into the master hopper3.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Now testing on the stream server:
WJBF-D2 CW Augusta GA
KSVI-D2 CW Billings MT
WETM-D2 CW Elmira NY
WJET-D2 CW Erie PA
KLFY-D2 CW Lafayette LA
KARD-D2 CW Monroe LA
WVBT-D2 CW Norfolk VA
WTWO-D2 CW Terre Haute IN
WFXV-D2 CW Utica NY
KFDX-D3 CW Wichita Falls TX
K
PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

KFDX-D3 CW Wichita Falls TX
These are now live on stream and weren't testing on satellite as of yesterday:
WETM-DT/19 CW Elmira
WJET-DT/25 CW Erie
KLFY-DT/11 CW Lafayette LA
KARD-DT/15 CW Monroe
WVBT-DT/44 CW Norfolk
WTWO-DT/3 CW Terre Haute

West Palm Beach is getting it on WTCN-CD/43 MNT. Still nothing for Fort Myers

Also, the Thunder's deal for KSBI/52 OKC and KQCW/19 Tulsa will be via a special cable and DIRECTV only feed of those stations. OTA viewers and Dish customers will be limited to 10 games.

Thanks for the updates on CW norfolk
Hopefully comes to sat soon!!

Not seeing 44 (WVBT-DT/44 CW Norfolk ) on my D* app for firestick
K
It's only available for streaming customers, they still haven't added that batch of CW stations to satellite.

Even if it was, satellite customers still can't stream their CW affiliates via the app, just the Big 4, select PBS stations and some independents (mainly the ones that have full season NHL/NBA rights)

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

A 12 team playoff net should catch any undefeated team. The 12 team playoff also exposed that rankings suck. I mean, we kind of knew already that the rankings weren't particularly reproducible, but we now have the empirical evidence that the rankings suck because judging who is the best among a mickey mouse scheduled football season isn't a rational endeavor. So the 12 team playoff ensures most teams that should make it, do, including the mid-major undefeated team. 8 teams should be able to work as well, but puts greater risk at OSU and Alabama missing the playoff... can't have that.

Which is the run up to my main problem with the 24 team set up is that it is designed to keep the OSU's and Alabama's from missing the playoff. The cartels are ensuring widespread participation for their own cartels to increase the monetary reward to themselves. It is fixing the system while not fixing the outcomes, merely making the regular season game outcomes virtually irrelevant. Sure, a bye for winning the conference would be nice, but we've already seen that byes aren't that influential.
We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.
That is college football in a nutshell. Again, college football isn't about competition, it is about revenue. The entire setup is about making money, from regular season squash games against local jobbers like the WWF days to tax exempt bowl games.

And to add to the first world woes, the college football cartels have made being a College Football fan even more expensive... so they can get paid more.

I have a solution that is guaranteed to work.
All Hopper developers are required to turn in their RF Hopper remotes and use only IR remotes.

I guarantee you that the bug will be fixed in two days!

Excellent suggestion.

I lost IR control of my H3 after the H398 update in September of 25. We were using the Harmony Hub remote system from Logitech. We have been using the H3 OEM remote to turn the receiver on and off ever since then.

H398 Software Version
BTW my bedroom H3 does not have this problem where I am using a Harmony 650. Also has there been any more feedback? Are they still working on this or what?

I think I have a separate issue with our Hopper 3 when watching/recording a 4K event. I have had many instances of it spontaneously restarting when I "disturbed" it during a 4K event. I learned to not touch the remote after a given point.

But it might be the IR code subroutine and 4K that make it touchy. I'll try it Wednesday night during the NLCS Game 3.

I was having similar issues last night while watching and recording the NLCS game on 148. When I tried resuming the game at one point the screen went blank and I couldn't get my H3 to respond to any remote commands. Eventually the Hopper went to a HD channel but still no remote response. After a while the Hopper went into a re-boot cycle. This happened at least 3 times. I was using an IR universal remote only.

A little frustrating to have the game broken up like that but at least the Brewers won:)

Yea, I've only been a CIO for the last 30 years! :)
Trust me, when something important breaks, they get to own it!

Loaded H713 software on my Hopper 3 last week. Have not seen any change in the IR/RF remote issues with my Harmony 700.
Has Dish acknowledged this is a problem and are they committed to fixing it?
I'd be happy to roll back to last July.

Anyone making their own breakfast sausage? I've recently been trying different recipes, found some I like, some I've modified...

I will look, but I don't think I have seen it. Owen's breakfast sausage use to be favorite, but I can't find it anymore. Jimmy Dean's country mild is OK also when I can find it.

They run Owens at $3.99 for lb and $7.99 a couple times a month at some grocery stores here, I actually was wrong, just checked a pork sirloin roast it was $1.99 a lb. (cooked it yesterday so pack was in trash)

Kroger stores carry Bob Evans Sage Sausage. For me that means Smiths.

No Kroger's near me. I live in the heart of Walmart land. The only option besides Walmart is Harp's.

Surprisingly I moved here from the Gulf Coast due to the heat. But it has been hotter here due to the heat domes than it did down there.

Two bugs out and three new bugs in.🐞

Updated to H713 on a Hopper 3 from H712 with Hopper Plus a few hours earlier.

It brought a old problem back:

One of the problems I am seeing is that the Available Joey Software section no longer is showing the Android TV versions even after a manual software reset twice and the nightly reboot. Until it does, nether Technician Android TV download and Hopper Plus is able to check, download and update the Android TV software.

This was a major problem with H703.

H710 removed that dependency but it's broken again.

Yep. Just got a call from a customer who said her DVR buttons stopped working. Told her about the new software and had her reboot her H3, problem solved.

Reboot just fixes it for a short time and then it's back to messed up

Try going exclusively to an IR remote and you will see the pain

Within the last few hours as I did check earlier today when it was still missing, the Available Joey Software line now has added "P154 P15403" which is for the Hopper Plus that I have but my Hopper Plus software is still on P15317, I will do a Download Android TV (ATV) Software for the Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey which are all Android TV devices and then manually do a check update on the Hopper Plus to update the software shortly.

This happened to me. I was outside mowing and my wife came out and said that our nieces and nephews were going to be on the Noon News. She had it on in the bedroom on our Joey3. Since they weren't on yet, I decided to turn it on in the Living Room on our Hopper3. When I selected the channel (through Dish, not OTA) the Joey3 turned itself off. When I went back to the bedroom to turn it back on, the Hopper3 did a reboot. Luckily it all finished before their story came on, but I just found it strange.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.
