Hello. Been lurking here for a few days absorbing all the great info. I've learned quite a bit and got a lot of questions answered just by reading the questions/answers of others. A few things Im still wondering about however. I've always been a "cable guy", but I've decide to try satellite. DirecTV seemed to have the upper hand. My setup will be a 4 TV system (Internet will be through local cable company still). After a brief web chat with a Direct rep, I was told I'd be getting a Genie with 3 clients (mini's).

To make this simple, I've pre-wired everything while the house was down to the studs. 2 RG6/2 Cat5e/2 HDMI to each TV terminating at a wall place with keystone jacks. There are other runs throughout the house for various other items terminating at wall plates/jacks, but they ALL run to a central drop point where I currently have my network closet with the various distribution setups. I've got 6 RG6 (solid core) and 12 Cat5e lines running to the attic at various spots so I'd cover all possibilities of where the heck they're going to mount this Dish. (Overkill I know…..but its not all just for TV) There's more than enough slack up there on all those coax lines to go wherever they needed to be. All of THOSE runs pass right next to the fuse panel/grounding center for the home and also drop into the network closet.

Any coax that I left open ended I did not compress fittings on yet as I thought the installer would probably prefer to do that part himself as he can terminate the run where its best suited to be at the closet. I think I've got a pretty good understanding of about 90% of how this DirecTV setup will go, but I'm still confused on the power injector/switches/splitter (something about a SWiM 8 that was recommended I get that would handle my setup). I've checked into that a bit, but maybe I need some clarification.

Its my understanding the the newer dishes only require 1 drop from the dish (granted your equipment is the more recent/new end). I know there are plenty up there that could be used, but I'd imagine the technician will only use what is needed? Thats where I get a bit lost. That drop from the attic needs to split somehow for the 4 TV's. 3 of the coax runs will go directly to the TV's (for the Genie Clients mounted on back of wall mounted TV's) and the third will go the network closet. I think thats where this SWiM 8 (or SWM8) piece comes into play correct? And then some kind of power injector/power source? Where will those items be placed? The Genie itself will most likely go up near the main TV, but I'd like to keep it in the network closet and run it off my IP2IR controllers. We will see I guess.

I'm extremely picky and particular about my home network/automation setup. I've spent a great deal of time organizing thousands of feet of low voltage cable/data runs throughout my home before I buttoned it all up. I did leave some PVC access tubes to grant access between floors/wall/attic/etc if there was a need to add more lines from the network closet to wherever really.

Please feel free to correct me where I need correction in my assumptions and thinking on this DirecTV install.

You will get an SWM Slimline dish installed with just one cable run to the house. Then the tech will need to install an SWM splitter, and then have cable runs from the splitter to each of the Tvs. It looks like you should have the splitter in the network closet, assuming he can connect the cable run from the dish into the network closet. You do not need an SWM8, that is for people with the older "legacy" setup. Your splitter will be an SWS8, maybe you are confusing this with the SWM8.
The power inserter could either go in the network closet, or could go anywhere in the house as long as it is on a coax that connects to the power-pass connector on the SWS8.
My guess is that the Genie itself should go next to its associated TV, that's where I would put it (and where the tech will put it unless you agree somewhere else. Putting it in the network closet and controlling it via IP is technically possible but you would need an HDMI cable from the Genie in the network closet to the associated TV. And the tech will not be happy because he needs to do setup using the regular remote and he can't easily do that if the Genie and TV are in different places, in fact he might simply say no.
The tech will also install a CCK which connects the DirecTV internal (DECA) network to your router. You can hard wire the Genie to the router but DirecTV's standard policy is to install the CCK, it can go anywhere where there is a coax connection. My recommendation is to let the tech install the CCK, and then in a few days if you want hard wire to the router make the change yourself.
Same with the idea of putting the Genie in the network closet. You can experiment with this in the future.
G
Ok that makes a lot more sense now. I must have been confusing the SWM8 with the SWS8 and mixing them up. I fully understand the importance of making the technicians job a bit more fluent and give him more time to focus on quality and not so much on quantity. I will go ahead and let him do his thing with the CCK. I can "edit" that out if I feel the need at a later date. I may just work the way it is also though. As for the Genie, I've got it all pre-run to be located in the network closet. HDMI included (and even to all the other TV's, before I knew how small the clients were). I will however just have him install the Genie on the floor under the respective TV. Its wall mounted and there's no stand for components. They're all located on the rack in the closet. (See my inclination to have the Genie there too?). Its a floating plasma that I backlight against a recessed wall, so I'd really hate to put a stand there for just the Genie. For the means of convenience for the technician, retrofitting an HDMI line to the back of the TV down to the floor for the time being is an eyesore I can definitely live with so he can do his job properly. Like you mentioned Texasbrit, I can "edit" that after the fact also.

I appreciate the quick responses!!

There are 6 cable runs from the attic to the network closet, so he can take his pick as to which one he wants for the Dish to tie into. By the time he gets to the network closet, It should be a cut/compresses/twist everything into its place. All the runs are labeled. There will be plenty of room and power access on a shelf on the rack for the various components you have mentioned. If it gets crammed, I have contingency plans!
raoul5788
The tech is going to love you!
G
Well this is what I'd want to walk into if I was the tech! I know what its like to walk into an install and its a complete mess and you're thinking "why me???" Why today? haha. I installed 12 volt electronics/audio/video for 13 years. Some of the vehicles I was told to do a "custom job" on were a lost cause…..but you make it work I guess.

However…..Its 24 below zero ambient temperature right now (52 below with the windchill). Thats just ridiculous for anybody to even think about being outdoors for more than 10 minutes. Thats not even exaggerating. At these temps with this wind, frostbite can occur on bare skin in less than 8 minutes.

So I will schedule this next week when its actually above zero…….

Thanks again for the help!!!
raoul5788
I'm sure I'm not the only one that wants to see pictures of the install when it's done, especially the data closet.

I was watching some of this guy's stuff and realized some of you may not be familiar. Basically his show is Candid Camera meets a magician. This is a comp of a few of his exploits. I first learned of him when I was out at a meeting in Denver about 10yrs ago. The men I was sitting at the table with started talking about this show and said it was one of the funniest things they had seen. When I got home I started watching it....yes, it is funny.

This started a couple months ago. I have 2 H3s on one network, both with 2 EHD identical 3 TB seperately powered so all recordings are accessible by all 4k & J4s (8 of them).

On one H3 (not the main one that controls the MOCA network), after it reboots, it doesn't recognize it has two EHDs plugged into it. Rebooting the EHD by their power source doesn't fix it. Resetting the network doesn't. Software h3 reset doesn't fix it. Rebooting MOCA h3 doesn't fix it but so far, after 3+ cold boots (unplug pwr to H3 with unrecognized EHDs), it finally it figures out they are plugged into it. BUT.... Then when you open a program it only partially shows series and episodes, but instead of showing recordings, it only shows upcoming airings. HELP!!!!

Thanks JohnGalt1234 - That's interesting. I wonder are the Boot Strap versions different between a Hopper 3 only and a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup as I have the later. I guess when charlesrshell is able to since he has both setups, he can do the test. Unless the bootstrap version is tied to when the specific Hopper 3 is manufactured, in my case, mines is from February 2016 when it was installed.

At least Google Search AI is saying the bootstrap version will never change and unique to each Hopper 3.

This is probably why different people seem to either have the issue or they don't because the bootstrap code could also be tied to the hardware revision and
components other than the internal HD.

JohnGalt1234 - So you basically have 2 Hopper 3's. The CasinoH3 is the one that is Hopper 3 only while Master Bedroom is a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup.
Master Bedroom uses Android TV (ATV) software so the DISH part is actually a app and will behave differently as you can probably tell the Guide's are different on the Master Bedroom which will resemble the same guide used on other ATV devices such as the Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4. If I am correct, the CasinoH3 is the one with the problem since you did say the one dated 09/05/2026 is the naughty one while 08/15/2026 named Master Bedroom is the nice one. Usually I would expect the CasinoH3 to be the one without the problem because it's Hopper 3 only and Master Bedroom would be the one with problems because it has the Hopper Plus involved. That is why they behave differently because CasinoH3 is running the native Hopper 3 software while Master Bedroom is running the Android TV software and also it runs a app called DISH known as package com.dish.atv.launcher, the version for mines is P15403 2026100917 so it's probably the same version as the Hopper Plus software version with the date of October 9, 2026, not sure what the 17 means except maybe revision 17?

This explains it better than I can. Sorry, had to take all the ads out.

As I understand it, the android is just the display signal from the hopper+. I can disconnect the H+ and plug the hdmi directly into the master hopper3.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Now testing on the stream server:
WJBF-D2 CW Augusta GA
KSVI-D2 CW Billings MT
WETM-D2 CW Elmira NY
WJET-D2 CW Erie PA
KLFY-D2 CW Lafayette LA
KARD-D2 CW Monroe LA
WVBT-D2 CW Norfolk VA
WTWO-D2 CW Terre Haute IN
WFXV-D2 CW Utica NY
KFDX-D3 CW Wichita Falls TX
K
PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

KLFY-DT/11 CW Lafayette LA
KARD-DT/15 CW Monroe

West Palm Beach is getting it on WTCN-CD/43 MNT. Still nothing for Fort Myers

Also, the Thunder's deal for KSBI/52 OKC and KQCW/19 Tulsa will be via a special cable and DIRECTV only feed of those stations. OTA viewers and Dish customers will be limited to 10 games.

Thanks for the updates on CW norfolk
Hopefully comes to sat soon!!

Not seeing 44 (WVBT-DT/44 CW Norfolk ) on my D* app for firestick
K
It's only available for streaming customers, they still haven't added that batch of CW stations to satellite.

Even if it was, satellite customers still can't stream their CW affiliates via the app, just the Big 4, select PBS stations and some independents (mainly the ones that have full season NHL/NBA rights)

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

A 12 team playoff net should catch any undefeated team. The 12 team playoff also exposed that rankings suck. I mean, we kind of knew already that the rankings weren't particularly reproducible, but we now have the empirical evidence that the rankings suck because judging who is the best among a mickey mouse scheduled football season isn't a rational endeavor. So the 12 team playoff ensures most teams that should make it, do, including the mid-major undefeated team. 8 teams should be able to work as well, but puts greater risk at OSU and Alabama missing the playoff... can't have that.

Which is the run up to my main problem with the 24 team set up is that it is designed to keep the OSU's and Alabama's from missing the playoff. The cartels are ensuring widespread participation for their own cartels to increase the monetary reward to themselves. It is fixing the system while not fixing the outcomes, merely making the regular season game outcomes virtually irrelevant. Sure, a bye for winning the conference would be nice, but we've already seen that byes aren't that influential.
We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.
That is college football in a nutshell. Again, college football isn't about competition, it is about revenue. The entire setup is about making money, from regular season squash games against local jobbers like the WWF days to tax exempt bowl games.

And to add to the first world woes, the college football cartels have made being a College Football fan even more expensive... so they can get paid more.

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

All Hopper developers are required to turn in their RF Hopper remotes and use only IR remotes.

I guarantee you that the bug will be fixed in two days!
Try it; it will work! They will work 24 hours a day to fix it when the WAF goes into the toilet!

I think I have a separate issue with our Hopper 3 when watching/recording a 4K event. I have had many instances of it spontaneously restarting when I "disturbed" it during a 4K event. I learned to not touch the remote after a given point.

But it might be the IR code subroutine and 4K that make it touchy. I'll try it Wednesday night during the NLCS Game 3.

I was having similar issues last night while watching and recording the NLCS game on 148. When I tried resuming the game at one point the screen went blank and I couldn't get my H3 to respond to any remote commands. Eventually the Hopper went to a HD channel but still no remote response. After a while the Hopper went into a re-boot cycle. This happened at least 3 times. I was using an IR universal remote only.

A little frustrating to have the game broken up like that but at least the Brewers won:)

Excellent suggestion.
Yea, I've only been a CIO for the last 30 years! :)
Trust me, when something important breaks, they get to own it!

Loaded H713 software on my Hopper 3 last week. Have not seen any change in the IR/RF remote issues with my Harmony 700.
Has Dish acknowledged this is a problem and are they committed to fixing it?
I'd be happy to roll back to last July.

Anyone making their own breakfast sausage? I've recently been trying different recipes, found some I like, some I've modified...

I will look, but I don't think I have seen it. Owen's breakfast sausage use to be favorite, but I can't find it anymore. Jimmy Dean's country mild is OK also when I can find it.

They run Owens at $3.99 for lb and $7.99 a couple times a month at some grocery stores here, I actually was wrong, just checked a pork sirloin roast it was $1.99 a lb. (cooked it yesterday so pack was in trash)

Kroger stores carry Bob Evans Sage Sausage. For me that means Smiths.

No Kroger's near me. I live in the heart of Walmart land. The only option besides Walmart is Harp's.

Surprisingly I moved here from the Gulf Coast due to the heat. But it has been hotter here due to the heat domes than it did down there.
