Just to start out so all of you understand what is and isn't done I explain below.

When it comes to the HMC the software will be split up like this below.

Ucentric side= includes all multiroom and networking based features.
DirecTV side = program guide and interactive middleware.
NDS side = conditional access and security.

Now the HMC software was designed as a module based system so that each of the three software sets could be done seperately and put on the box together without conflicts.

Now when it comes to software as far as how long it will take it breaks down like this.

NDS = 15%
DirecTV = 15%
Ucentric = 70%

Now with all that said I'm glad to say that Ucentric has finished making and testing their portion of the middleware for the new HMC and it has been given to D* within the last week or so. That means that most of the work has been done and all thats left if for D* to put all the software together and make sure it works and do their testing on the box as a whole and once that is done they would start production. This means in simple terms that the HMC will be out sometime in the 4th quarter and that is giving time for delays lasting in the weeks.

This box should be completed and final enough that I'm sure an announcement will be made in July with IMO a date of availability for the HMC.

Not really but your best bet is a local thread in the local HDTV forums on AVSForum where several users have been given this hardware. Just so a search for Comcast simulcast on AVS. Also google searches will turn things up. Sorry to say that this information is pretty much spread out everywhere.

Longhorn, your research is generally quite good, but there are a couple of facts amiss here.

LonghornXP said:
First advantage is cost in that this would cost so much less than upgrading the cable systems. They will have nearly unlimited bandwidth using switched video. That means that can still offer that analog lineup for analog only customers while offering digital cable customers with a digital box and true 100% digital lineup. So digital boxes would get channels 99 and below in digital instead of analog.

Cable will most definitely have limits on their bandwidth. With simulcasting, they'll be able to provide the legacy analog beside all digital and have bandwidth for between 30-45 HD channels before a system upgrade is necessary. This was stated in a response to an analyst question during the CC last week.

Also with switched video they can finally get the bandwidth to offer every customer with say Road Runner speeds of 100Mbps down and 50Mbps UP. Now that doesn't mean you will be offered those speeds but they can with great ease match Verizon FIOS speeds without changing anything but the capping speed. So they can upgrade every Road Runner customer in just one day just using a computer.

No such thing in the cable world unless you're the only one on the line from the head end to your house :D Are you confusing this with VDSL2, which is a telco product and has a 1000 ft. limitation? Any cable solution is a shared line. Even if it were a gigabit uplink, you're talking one line from the head end to each 10 homes and even that is simplistic and doesn't account for overhead. And the more users you through at that during heavy load periods, the more your speed goes down.

The cap for HSI on the current Comcast system is generally thought to be in the low teens with all the other services they are rolling out being considered. That would apply to newer build areas(including my own, thankfully) where loads are not saturating the network.

Switched video has limits to only how many channels their encoders can handle so I have no idea what you read because they must have been talking about something else.

Have you heard what Docsis 3.0 and switched video/all digital switchover can do because those two things will greatly increase available bandwidth to these levels. Now again they could offer every customer 100Mbps down speeds if everything went perfect but in the real world we won't have anything more than 50Mbps down per customer. Now with that said we most likely will see cable companies offering teirs to compete with the telcos. Say if Verizon offers 15Mbps down and 2Mbps UP for 45 bucks a month. Most likely we will see cable companies offering 20Mbps down and 2Mbps UP for the same price. Again just because they can do it doesn't mean they will or that it will work as well as they hope. The whole point of what I've said is that they soon will have ways to massively expand their bandwidth without a big costly upgrade process that also takes tons of time to boot.

DOCSIS3.0, which is not even finalized and will probably not roll out in the US until '08 or '09 has an upper limit of 38 or 43 Mbps, depending if your system is 64 or 256 QAM. DOCSIS 2.0 is only now rolling out. My provider Comcast only supports DOCSIS 1.0 at this time.

The switched video/all digital gets them the scenario I gave in the earlier post. Comcast stated this directly in their CC last week and since their network is one of the more advanced, it's probably a good model for all MSOs. The Philly area is currently the only metro with that technology in place, but 75% of their network will be by years end. So you can check with the folks in Philly and see what they are offered as an example.

Now again they could offer every customer 100Mbps down speeds if everything went perfect but in the real world we won't have anything more than 50Mbps down per customer. 100 Mbps for what? Within their network? Certainly not for an Internet connection on any scale. While the concept is fine if you just want to prove it with a sample case or two, it doesn't scale. The Internet backbone won't support mass residential 100 Mbps connections and no one needs that sort of speed anyway. The only people you facilitate with that are the guys peer sharing porn.

Just like the WiMax technology that everyone thinks is THE answer. No, it's just a last mile solution. At some point you still have to hook all those WiMax subs up to the wired Internet world and there again your scaling kills you. WiMax, just like cable, is a aggreate spec. Depends on how many are sharing the pipe will determine what download speed you ultimately receive. Advertised speeds with cable are alway best case, low load scenarios.

FWIW, you can buy a 20 Mbps bidrectional connection from Surewest in the Sacramento, Calif. area today. It's FTTN, I believe. I think the cost is $100/mo and it comes with a 40 Gig/mo transfer cap. But again I ask why? No normal residential application needs that sort of speed. I transfer large files every day when I work from home. My 4 Mbps connections does that just fine. The dreams of 100 Mbps pipes are fine for Ga-ga responses, but in reality there is no practical application at this time.

But getting back to your topic at hand, the whole HMC concept is pretty dang cool. Some of this stuff has existed for a couple of years now, which means they've been fine tuning the feature sets. MPEG2/MPEG4 dual decoder chips are just about to production levels, so the boxes can start rolling out and there is enough pressure in the market place that it won't be long now before we start seeing them in people's home. Personally I don't think the first DirecTV effort will be all that great, but you have to start somewhere and build from there. Hopefully by the time an HD version hits the market, it's in a compelling package.

Keep up the good work on the research side. It's all quite interesting stuff.

EDIT: My bad. Surewest is a FTTP solution, not FTTN. You could call them the west coast version of Verizon FiOS.

Now that I'm retired, obviously I have different health care insurance. I take 2 prescriptions. With my old insurance I didn't have to pay for either of them, now I do. It's not a huge amount but it led me to dig a little into the cost of prescription medications. I have been using Walgreens for the longest time. But what I found was that Walgreens price is 4.8 times more for one of my prescriptions and the other is 2.3 percent more compared to the lowest price pharmacy. If you pay for prescription medications you might want to have a look at trumprx and see if you can get a lower price.

I run them through several different providers to see who has the lowest cost

Usually it's Walmart or Sam's + GoodRx

Also...

You can also price them through the CareCard and WellRx apps.

Sometimes Amazon Pharmacy is cheapest.

I'm fortunate and don't take any medications. A couple years ago I had to take some antibiotics and used the GoodRx app. Went to Walmart and the person behind the desk knew me and told me to just buy them outright....the GoodRx price was a LOT higher. She said they aren't supposed to tell customers when they see they are being screwed.

Walmart and Sam's pharmacies have "zero rated" prescriptions lists where generics are $4 (or less). If yours are on that list, then of course GoodRx isn't going to help. Also, GoodRx isn't always the cheapest discount program. For me, the cheapest is usually Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drugs.

My wife and I both take Gabapentin for nerve pain. With our Medicare Plan D plan it use to be free. Now we have to pay for it. Yesterday my wife got her prescription at CVS and the pharmacist dug around and got the cost cut in half with what he said was RX. I am guessing this was GoodRX.

Here in NY State, if you're 65 or older you're eligible for the state's EPIC (Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage) Part D supplement that limits your maximum co-pay to $20. The co-pays range from $3 to $20 depending on the tier. The Part D included with my Advantage plan has many tier 1 drugs at no co-pay.

Comcast is the first to report, with a massive 274,000 loss in video subscribers.

In the 3Q of 2016, Comcast had 21.42 million video subscribers and was the #1 provider, now at 10.39 million and is the #3 Provider, YTTV is #2 ( who also surpassed DirecTV-8 Million and Dish-under 5 Million), Charter/Spectrum is #1.

Comcast called fiber pricing "irrational" because the ROI is over three years. What is irrational to me is Comcast internet is based on lines they put in the ground decades ago at this point, for the most part. Is copper that much more expensive to maintain?

I hope these new "most powerful" satellites will mean that DISH can provide every channel that can be sourced in HD in HD. I do not like the fact that two of my favorite channels (Start and H&I) are SD. I was also very disappointed after installation that METV has to be streamed from my internet connection. Finally, I dropped the locals upon seeing that my local CW channel is in blurry letterboxed SD when it has been HD OTA for years.

This piece gets me - the fact that Dish has removed SD channels from satellite completely in the name of "HD upgrades". I pay for satellite TV, not streaming...I don't see why they couldn't leave the SD version of the channels on Satellite then put the HD streaming version like they have for other channels.

There appears to be a new DIRECTV Gemini OTT box, the C81KW-650.

The FCC listing is partially available, and a Geekbench entry confirms it uses an Amlogic S905X5, a solid SoC for a set-top box.

I also see 4GB of RAM, and the manufacturer is SEI Robotics.

My guess it is like the 2 previous boxes where you can turn it off/on but requires a reboot once you make the change for the change to take effect. Not sure if there is some limitation in the hardware that won't allow it to change automatically to what is in the content like other devices do. Even DIRECTV satellites own C61K changes on the fly.

I only noticed that as a problem on TVs that handle HDR poorly. They don't have enough peak brightness or enough dimming zones. For instance, TCL makes three lines of TV, sort of like the old Sears model of Good, Better, Best. On my 4 or 5 year end low price model, HDR looked awful (My neighbor likes the TV now). The midrange model from the next model year ithat I have at my Lake home now looks pretty good in HDR all the time. The midrange TCL QM7 model from last year at my other home looks spectacular, as I remember. I haven't seen it for 6 months.

If I had a TV that does HDR poorly, I would configure the Gemini to disable all HDR.

I agree with that. The 2 LGs that we have Gemini's on looks far better with HDR enabled then it does with HDR off.

That would be a deal-breaker for me. The Rokus default to having it on all the time but it's easy enough to change that to native. If the content is HDR it goes on. Otherwise, no.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

So...DirecTV advertises the Choice package with 95+ bonus channels for Satellite customers. You don't want 90+ of the 95...

Excluding PPV, premium networks, infomercial, shopping, religion, and non-English programming, there are 7 channels on satellite that are not on streaming:
NFL Network, MavTV, FE TV, Free Speech, NASA, INSP, and Pursuit. I'm pretty sure a couple of those are public interest that they have to carry to meet an FCC quota on satellite.

I hope they get called out for this advertising because that is ridiculous. One big network, NFL, will probably get added to streaming when their next agreement comes up, and the rest are likely very low viewership.

What about streaming, what do you get extra with the Choice package that isn't on Satellite:
Two stations - one of which is an internet TV - Fox Weather, and Heros & Icons (a diginet). Nothing special here to look at either.

If they cleaned up a couple of their agreements, added a few public interest stations to streaming, they could probably have their lineups match. It's close now, if you take out all the garbage on satellite that they earn money on. If they can sell infomercials on satellite, why can't they on streaming, seems like a miss. A bigger miss, including those stations in the "bonus channels just for satellite customers." Pretty sad marketing right there.

1681344805401.png

Attached is a comparison sheet of satellite vs streaming for the three main packages if anyone is interested.

MOD EDIT: See Post #3 for an up to date list of what channels are available on sat but not on streaming/internet, see Post #21 for an up to date list of what's available in the app for streaming customers, but not for sat customers.

Well, this is awkward. Today the Miami Heat announced that their games in West Palm Beach this season will be aired on WTCN Channel 43, the Sinclair independent... and the station which DTV Stream downgraded from HD to SD a few weeks ago. Makes you wonder if the Heat is aware of this.

I did find the WTCN Chief Engineer (Bill Macbeth) and he said he knew nothing of what DTV Stream had done. Will look into it and get back to me.

One might get the impression that what DIRECTV does, or doesn't, is becoming far less consequential than it used to be.

No updates but if you can get DISH Technical Operations to roll you back to H710 or earlier even though H708 would be best because it also eliminates another problem like in this comment, you will also no longer have the problem as long as you don't update manually or forced to any new version until the problem is fixed as the problem started in H711 and still exist in H712 and H713.
