Hi,

I have an opportunity to buy a secondhand Chapparal OMT feed for C-Band with two 17 K LNB's that is meant to be used for linear C-Band reception. So horizontal and vertical.

However, I live in Europe where just about all C-Band satellites of interest to me broadcast in circular mode, LHCP and RHCP.

At present I use a very good CalAmp feed that was recommended here as being superior to the Chapparal feed and a Norsat C-Band LNB type 8515, again, recommended to me here.

The disadvantage is of course that I need to use an old analog Echostar receiver to change polarizations, the advantage is that I can use the skewing option for the most perfect signal. But it sure would be attractive if I no longer needed to skew or change polarity manually.

Now I don't know how this is seen in publications from the USA, but here lately people use what's called a "studs" solution als an alternative to using a dialectricum like I do to get circular polarized signals. But it seems to me that using a dialectricum on a fixed OMT with two LNB's wouldn't work.

Normally this solution is carried out rather rudimentarily by sticking a plastic bottle with studs at exactly calculated positions into the feed. However, the person who figured this out old me that although theoretically this should also work with a dual LNB OMT like this (the seller speaks of a Bull OMT but I don't find this back in that context) he also told me that he is not aware that anyone ever was able to apply this studs-solution succesfully in such a system, that he only knows it to work in a regular feed.

Can anyone tell me what's wisdom? An extra complication is that the guy wants to sell the OMT without the matching scalar rings because he wants to use those himself for another project. I know of two types of Chapparal scalar rings (one type had deeper rings than the other) which of course complicates the issue even further for me.

Should I risk it and buy, or should I not mess with a good working system and accept that polarity is something that I juist have to do manually with a separate contraption? Or is there such a thing as a dual C-Band LNB system that's made for circular and linear polarization? What's wisdom in this matter, I hate to buy gear for good money that ends up in the trash can or tool box...

The large 20" inch ADL C/KU feed horn is constructed to do circular / linear with out having a teflon slab. The little box to the left on the fourth photograph is for a Ku LNB.
P
Thanks for your explanations, Kevin and DK+Sat. To begin with the latter, does that mean that this feedhorn is also meant to work with Ku-Band circular signals? Since recently we have the Russian Express AT-1 satellite at 56 degrees East which uniquely uses circular polarization in Ku-Band frequencies.

On the subject of "professional gear", In the late 80's Seavey teamed up with Winegard and Drake to promote a joint C-Band product for the European market. So at that time Seavey did indeed aim it's products at consumers rather than at professionals. Unfortunate for them: they assumed that Great britain would be a good base to concentrate their sales efforts on. From an American point of view quite understandable. However what they didn't realize is that whearas many continental Europeans speak several more languages, most Britons don't, you're lucky if they understand some rudimentary French. So their interests in broadcasts from foreign nations is likewise much less. At least I assume that that's the reason why they never were very succesful.

About things like feeds I can't speak from any personal experience, but I do know several producers of receiving equipment who also put out a "professional model" meaning that they use the same exact model that's used for consumers but place it in a 19" box and then multiply the price by as much as four times. For that reason I'm alsways a bit apprehensive when words like "professional" are used. The Seavey feed sure wasn't bad but when I replaced it by consumer products like the Chapparal co-rotor I didn't have the impression that I regressed to a worse product. But perhaps the paint of Seavey holds better that it's competitors, I used it for a too short period to find out.

We do not have any satellites in North America that are circular polarization in Ku-Band 11.70 -1275 GHz frequencies, i thing the only one is Anik F3 @ 118.7 that Echostar Dish network is using.

Ik know, but I was asking about de description you gave of the feed that seemed to indicate that the same thing counted for C and Ku bands which would have meant that it were also suitable for circular Ku-Band signals.

as far as I know its ku linear.

But.....if you like Tulsa King....looks like you would probably like this as well. I don't mind spin-offs as long as they don't involve a sassy niece who moves from the big city

I thought I would come here and find lots of complaints about the update to the dish anywhere mobile app, but am not seeing any. It used to look just like the desktop webpage. Now you can no longer filter by sports channels or movie channels. Plus that they made it look like a big button telephone and you see fewer channels in the screen which requires more scrolling. Yes I realize you can look at sports then select which sport you want to look at, I just liked being able to see all sporting events in the guide with all other channels being filtered out. Am I alone in the wilderness on this?

I'm not a big fan of the new layout, especially on my Apple TV. It used to look like the old Guide layout on the Hopper 3, but they changed parts of that, too.

No. Bring in someone new.🤔 Tony is not serious enough for me. Parker is too close to the team and Tim is too young to take over IMO.

I don't think Tim and Tony are that far apart in Age ...

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.

Might be worth a watch when it comes out. Looks like typical big corp against the little guy movie BUT....there is a reason this plot type is so oft repeated, it draws audiences.

If you're going try to read / listen to the book (can't recommend the audio book enough) before this comes out, I'd avoid trailers.

Trailer below, spoiling it to make sure you read the above bold message first. The book / audio book are fantastic. Go into this blind if you can IMO!

Kind of disappointed at how much they show. A lot still to see, but man, some good reveals in the book that are just served up here.

I've seen it twice. Can't recommend the audio book enough, Ray Porter's performance is amazing and there's so much more in the book than the movie.

Forgot to comment. I did watch when it first came out on MGM. I enjoyed it a lot. I think reading the book made it easier to watch. Several friends commented it was a little hard to follow.

I agree. That can go for pretty much any book vs movie. Back when I was single I would read any Stephen King or John Grisham book I could get my hands on. When you read a book you make up the scenes and characters in your mind.....the movie version always disappoints.

A big win for the Patriots, and they are now 3-2.

Browns lose a close one with... The Jets. That is a classic Browns loss (granted, any loss is a classic one it seems). 49'ers, Vikings, and Chiefs remain undefeated. The AFC north have a three way tie at 3-2 for second place.

I had quit watching this show years ago because I ended up more annoyed than entertained. Well......I'm STILL more annoyed than entertained. I DO find it interesting to see how things work behind the scenes at many businesses. What annoys me is how utterly out of touch CEOs are with the companies they run. At the end of almost every episode the head of the company is amazed at how hard the employees have to work and many times have to work around impossible guidelines set forth from headquarters.

I found this one interesting because the new CEO had big plans for this company, Muscle Maker Grill, and it looked like the stores were all pretty busy. Recent history hasn't been good to this company however. I bet the covid lockdowns were the real killer.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
