I saw this post on AVS, looks interesting. Although from recent info on here it looks like the August 1 date is being pushed back. I would like to see LonghornXP's comments on it.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=557967

Word on the street is DirecTV will be doing the following:

*Free HD equipment to new subs with a two year agreement beginning August 1. $100 for the HD DVR for new subs. Lease option on the DVR.
*Free HD equipment to current subs who already have HD equipment to receive MPEG-4 with a two year agreement beginning August 1, with an equipment upgrade to roll out to Sunday Ticket Superfan and LiL HD subs first.
*Upgrade path for current SD subs for about $200 for those going from SD to HD, with an option to lease HD equipment vs. buy.
*Upgrade path for current SD subs for $100 for those who want to go from SD MPEG-2 to take advantage of new SD MPEG-4 material, this will be an SD DVR - not TiVo.
*Home Media Center around Christmas lease or buy for $500, plus $100 for each remote unit.

By year end, the only new DirecTV equipment will be as follows:

SD receiver - MPEG-2 (A basic sub)
SD DVR - MPEG-2/MPEG-4
HD receiver - MPEG-2/Mpeg-4
HD DVR - MPEG-2/MPEG-4
Home Media Center - MPEG-2/MPEG-4

HD Channels by September:

ESPN 2
INHD 1 and INHD 2
TNT
HBO East/West
Showtime East/West
Starz East/West
Encore East/West
Cinemax
Fox HD Movie Package - Comparable to Voom 21 package (No details on number of channels, but it will include films from 20th Century Fox - Quite the catalog - Star Wars, Die Hard etc...)
Sunday Ticket and other sports subscriptions which offer HD games.

The above channels will not be on spaceway. Spaceway is for LiL, PPV/VOD (Which will dump to DVRs during the night and you pay only if you watch them). Once Spaceway 2 is up, there is room for 50 LiL markets which will be transitioned through next year. San Diego is slated for the February to March timeframe.

Additionally, they expect to add expanded movie packages for MPEG-4 equiped subs. MPEG-2 subs will get the current movie packages, MPEG-4 will have available the additional VH-1 channels and all of the other movie package channels such as HBO Comedy. East and West versions of Starz!/Encore etc...

Packaging and pricing is also going to change, but the details on channel breakout are unknown. A best Guess would be a $29.95 package of the popular programing plus $19.95 for HD everything. Kind of like how Cox has broken out their digital packages.

HD will be moving to 100% MPEG-4. New Expanded SD channels will also be MPEG-4, current channels will remain MPEG-2 durrign the transition. When all of the new SATs are up in 2007 the transition will be completed on DirecTV's end and everything can move to MPEG-4, but the in home equipment swapout will have to be complete before it can happen. All new receivers will be MPEG-4 compatible (SD and HD) begining August 1, except for a basic MPEG-2 box to attract new customers at a low cost point. MPEG-4 effectively doubles DirecTVs capacity on the SD side - about 500 SD channels not including spotbeams. Add to that LiL plus an addiitonal 150 national HD channels on the Ka side.

SD locals will remain available until 2008, or until everyone in a particualr market has been converted to HD, then the SD locals will go away and the box will do the HD-SD conversion.

Satellite allocation:

101 will remain primary.
110 for International Programming
119 for Spanish Programing and LiL backfill.

HD subs will only need the new Ka Dish which also picks up the 101 slot. 110 and 119 won't be needed unless your SD locals are there and you want them or you sub to foreign language programming. The new dish will hit all of the Ka Satellites plus 101 Ku.

SD Subs who want SD MPEG-4 material, but not HD will not need a new dish.

Longhorn,

Now I am getting YES HD(Yankees home games) for free as part of my RSN. Are you saying those games will no longer be free and I need to subscribe to the Sports Pack as well? That is not good. Not good at all...

Sorry about that I was very tired last night when I posted this. To get your local RSNs in HDTV you must order the locals package or the sports pack but you don't need to order both. Now when RSN HD channels are showing college sports in HDTV you must order the sports back to get them all (I'm talking about RSN channels out of your market). Also keep in mind that most pro games outside of your RSN will be blacked out. I do know that RSN HD is in the works but when I don't know but it shouldn't be much longer after the original rollouts in each market. Also customers within the Chicago market will have access to next years Cubs and Whitesox games in HDTV because D* will carry the OTA WGN feed. You must order the locals channel package to get this upcoming WGN feed. Customers outside of the Chicago market won't have access to this channel unless they order the MLB Extra Innings package but the games will be on different channels just mirrored from that WGN OTA feed.

rad said:
Longhorn, are you now getting information that the HD RSN channels, like Comcast SportsNet Chicago will also be carried? I thought in prior ports you indicated that they wouldn't be carried, just the four major network channels for the LIL HD rollout.

My post below yours answers most of your questions. Keep in mind that some Comcast sportsnet channels along with others won't be on D* because they aren't hosted via a satellite but sent over the cable companies closed fiber network. Because of this those few channels don't have to be offered to D*.
C
If WGN is broadcasting the game in HD and DirecTV has the feed why wouldn't DirecTV broadcast the HD version as well as the SD version? I don't live in the Chicago area and sounds like I would have to get MLB EI to see the Cubs games in HD on WGN, but I would still see the games in SD on WGN. Correct?

There's the local WGN feed (the OTA signal) which if you're in the Chicago DMA you get as part of your LIL. Then there's the national WGN feed with while it carries the same programming most of the time it can vary and the commercials are different.

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.
The widely publicized calculation stems from a viral news story from 2006 involving a widow named Ester Strogen. Her family discovered she had been continuously leasing two rotary dial telephones from AT&T for 42 years.
The total cost—which actually came out to more than $14,000 by the time the lease was canceled—was calculated based on the following legacy telecom structure:
  • The Monthly Fee: At the time her granddaughters discovered the charges, the ongoing leasing fee was $29.10 per month for the two outdated phones.
  • The Math: Over 42 years (504 months), paying roughly $24 to $30 a month accumulates to between $12,000 and $14,600 ($29.10 × 504 months = $14,666.40).
Why did this happen?
Prior to the landmark breakup of AT&T ("Ma Bell") in 1984, consumers were legally not allowed to own their phones; they were required to lease them directly from the phone company.
When the laws changed and phone ownership became legal, AT&T spun off its rental division into a company called QLT Consumer Lease Services. Millions of customers, particularly elderly individuals who were used to seeing a single unified phone bill, simply never realized that the small recurring "equipment lease" line-item could be canceled by buying a cheap phone at a retail store.

Yes, leasing absolutely cost that much in reality, and the math is entirely accurate. However, the calculations performed by the family did contain one major historical nuance: they multiplied the final 2006 rate across all 42 years, which means the actual total cash paid out was likely a bit lower.
The original viral story focused on 82-year-old widow Ester Strogen from Canton, Ohio, who paid $29.10 a month for two black rotary phones until her family intervened in July 2006.
The reality behind how the cost reached that staggering total breaks down into two distinct phases:

Phase 1: The Historical Base Rate (1960s – 1984)

When Strogen first got the phones in the 1960s, renting was a legal mandate and cost a fraction of the 2006 price—usually just a few dollars a month.
  • The "Insurance" Mirage: In exchange for that fee, Ma Bell promised free, lifetime maintenance. If the phone broke, they replaced it instantly at no extra cost.
  • The Cost-Plus Reality: Because these solid-state phones were built like tanks out of heavy plastic and steel, they almost never broke. Consumers paid a continuous premium for decades for a repair service they rarely used.
Phase 2: The Deregulation Rate Hikes (1984 – 2006)

After AT&T was forced to break up its monopoly in 1984, the rental side of the business was shifted to Lucent Technologies and later a legacy holding company. To maximize profit off a shrinking customer base, they steadily increased the monthly rental fees over the next 20 years.
  • By 2006, the rental cost had quietly ballooned to roughly $14.55 per phone per month.
  • When the family discovered the $29.10 monthly charge, they looked back at the 42-year span and estimated the collective loss at over $14,000.
Even adjusted for historical inflation—where $2 a month in 1964 had the purchasing power of roughly $20 today—Ester Strogen and hundreds of thousands of other elderly Americans realistically paid thousands of dollars out-of-pocket for standard desk phones they could have purchased at retail for $10.

The exact out-of-pocket dollar amount Ester Strogen paid over those 42 years was never publicly determined, as neither AT&T nor the family had access to monthly billing records stretching all the way back to the 1960s.
The figures reported in the media are entirely mathematical estimates based on the 2006 rate. The two primary numbers used to define the "cost" are:
  • The Stated Media Total: More than $14,000.
  • The Exact Family Formula: $14,666.40. This was derived by taking her final recorded bill of $29.10 per month and multiplying it across the full 42 years (504 months).
What the True Cash Cost Likely Was

Because AT&T did not charge $29.10 a month back in 1964, the true historical cash sum she handed over was lower than $14,000. In the 1960s and 1970s, basic phone lease fees were generally bundled into standard service or itemized at just $1.00 to $2.00 a month per phone.
If we realistically assume she paid lower base rates for the first 20 years before the post-1984 deregulation price hikes took effect, a realistic estimate of the actual cash paid is between $5,000 and $7,000.

The Real Cost When Adjusted for Inflation

While the family's $14,000 calculation overestimates the raw cash paid, it actually underestimates the true economic damage when factoring in the time value of money.
Paying $2.00 a month for equipment in 1964 sounds minor, but due to severe inflation during the 1970s, those early single dollars had the purchasing power of roughly $20.00 each in 2006 terms. If you adjust every historical lower monthly payment upward to account for inflation, Ester Strogen realistically lost the equivalent of well over $15,000 in modern purchasing power by renting instead of buying.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

I hope these new "most powerful" satellites will mean that DISH can provide every channel that can be sourced in HD in HD. I do not like the fact that two of my favorite channels (Start and H&I) are SD. I was also very disappointed after installation that METV has to be streamed from my internet connection. Finally, I dropped the locals upon seeing that my local CW channel is in blurry letterboxed SD when it has been HD OTA for years.

This piece gets me - the fact that Dish has removed SD channels from satellite completely in the name of "HD upgrades". I pay for satellite TV, not streaming...I don't see why they couldn't leave the SD version of the channels on Satellite then put the HD streaming version like they have for other channels.

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.
I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Well, according to the price per ounce on that first bag of coffee he mentions, that would mean the bag weighed over 6 ounces. That bag does NOT weigh 6 ounces. According to Google, an empty bag weighs half an ounce.
You need to weigh the actual bag...a deli bag weighs less than that but a thick coffee bag is gonna weigh around an ounce...an empty tin can has some weight

Products sold by the ounce, pound, etc, should always be priced for the product only. Only the shipping weight should include the packaging.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner. ;)

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).

You would be thinking wrong when it comes to goods that are sold by weight (meat, produce, nails). Those items typically go on the scale wrapped without an associated tare. The weight only excludes the sticker because it hasn't been printed yet.

Perhaps only for sliced meat and cheese. Salads and similarly "shifty" or "drippy" items are typically weighed in deli cartons of some sort.

My monster burritos (up to two lbs.) are weighed in their foil jackets or paper mache take-out trays, and the jacket/tray is then "sealed" with the printed label as it comes off the printer.

Precision has to give way to practicality in situations like that.

When i was a kid, i used to salivate envisioning me having a Cband dish. It wasn't until about 1995, I installed my first Cband dish, and i remember it took me about 2 weeks to get that dish aligned properly.. This was before internet, and i had to call and talk with people on the phone about advice on how to properly tune the dish. I can't remember the receiver, but it had a UHF remote. I had the satellite receiver in the living room, but i ported it to two TV's, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. It was so nice being able to control the receiver with the remote in the bedroom about 40 feet from the living room. I remember watching Rosanne feeds where it would air the entire week in succession. Nice nostalgia.

In order to participate in any Cutting Edge testing, you must sign a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA). Attached are a .docx (Microsoft Word) and PDF version of the latest DirecTV NDA. I found it easiest to complete the .docx version then paste a photo or scan image of my signature, cropped closely to just the signature into it as a picture. Then set Word to wrap text around the picture so that the picture follows the text "Signature".

People who have better PDF tools than I do may prefer that version.

When you apply for any Cutting Edge testing, you will be told how to send the signed copy.

Still with Choice package? My stepdad says when the game started he got black screen and something to do with not the right package.
He had the Twins the last 2 years and I saw the Wild screen on 668-1 when I was there a few weeks ago.

There were some technical issues during the pregame, where 668 was showing the Pacers feed instead of the Timberwolves feed until a few minutes before the game.

On the stream API it looks like some areas need the Sports Pack, what's his zip code?
