Hey all I just signed up yesterday at my local Sams Club, I wasn't even looking for a change in my TV service but I got sold anyway. I've often thought of a switch to D* in the past but the storms we get here in Oklahoma have always scared me from signing up, it's critical to have TV service when it's tornado season here.

Talked to some buddies who love D* and they helped me give in yesterday, I had made a few quick calls to them while shopping and thinking about my decision. I currently have UVerse TV only and its adequate enough for our needs, but we pay $108/month for it and only have the HBO premium channels for free for a few months.

The deal I got for D* is going to be a lot less for the first year and about the same as we pay now for UVerse for the 2nd year of the contract.

The switch of service isn't really what concerns me, it's the loss of signal during our stormy season and the install. More the install because I know I can buy a OTA antenna for a TV and use it during a real tornado event if the signal is out. And the salesman mentioned the off air channel that showed our local channel 9 or something.

So the install...this is what worries me. I'm sure they will be experienced enough to handle my house setup, it was prewired when built, but some of the existing uses might not leave him many choices to use wires/cables that exist. I currently have a Cox and ATT box on the side of my house that feed into my "comm" closet. Cox which is my internet is using the only coax cable from the outside to that closet, and ATT is using the only CAT5 cable. Now the comm closet has coax that runs to both of my main viewing areas so once he was able to get a coax line in that closet he could use the existing coax lines to get to my main TV.

My fears are that right now everything works good and change is scary, I don't want ugly wires all over the outside of my new house, the dish is bad enough, lol. Wished I could get a consult before install so if I don't like what is planned I could cancel the install.

I'm getting the Genie HD DVR and 3 of the wireless clients for the other TVs. How do the wireless clients work, do they work over my home WiFi or do they talk to the Genie box? The way the ATT wireless clients are working in my house now are the two that are downstairs are connected and talking to the wireless access point of ATTs in my comm closet downstairs. The main DVR unit is upstairs connected via coax to the ATT 3801HGV portal box. So ATT is fiber to house, CAT5 from outside box to comm closet, coax from there to main DVR. I want D* Genie upstairs via that coax, and wireless clients downstairs, but I'm worried the signals won't be strong enough.

Also curious the salesman said something about the installer being able to mount the wireless clients behind TVs mounted on the wall so no cables showed, I have two TVs that would need this setup, but question is how does the remote work if it can't see it? Will I have to pay for new remotes that work without line of sight?

Anyway once he's here and looks at it all and we discuss the plan is that too late to cancel install?

I'm probably way overthinking all this but the buyers remorse is setting in.

Talk me off the cliff of cancellation?

When he gets there, go over everything with him, you can cancel it then if you don't like the options available.
The remotes are RF/IR so they do either ...

If you really don't want a dish on roof or in yard then I would not go that route.

any update on the install?

As a former tech, whenever I heard the terms "ugly wires" ugly dish" I would first attempt to assure the picky homeowner I make all efforts to find the most efficient practical wiring routes taking into consideration aesthetics.
If that didn't work and the customer was still balking, asking me "can't you just" questions, or insisting THEY knew how to do the job better, I knew the job was a bust.
My advice.....Let the guy do his work. make sure he explains the routing and type of attachment for the cabling. If he's sharp, he will ask you to sign off on the job before he begins so that you cannot go back after the fact that claim you "did not know/approve".
If you are an understanding person and are willing to listen to the recommendations of the tech, you will find this process to be much smoother.
If you have already made up your mind that no matter what this is not going to be good, I suggest you stay with your current carrier and not waste other people's time. The tech has other work to do that day for other customers. Be considerate of that fact aw well.
It just has to be that way

In my tenure as a tech, the worst kind of customers were the ones who thought everything could be hidden from view. Included were the antenna, cabling, and even the d mark....Yeah. That in spite of the fact that the utilities were right there for everyone else to see.
Then inside the home, the only thing they wanted visible was the TV itself. They even wanted their components hidden.
These got rescheduled as 'custom installs"....

I don't want all wires hidden on the outside I just don't want tons of cables running my house, I've seen some pretty bad work out there, which may have been self installs I realize, I just want it clean as possible. That's all I ask, I understand nothing is perfect. I'll talk to the installer with respect and ask my questions and hope not to irritate him.

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Yep, I got the notification a few days ago. I'm not totally surprised.

Never used the address for anything, so no big loss to me.

Finished it this evening. General impressions with no story spoilers, but will spoil it anyways as it just came out today.

Not quite as impactful of a finale as past seasons I thought, we'll see how far down the rabbit hole things go as the latest plot twists and turns unravel. Thought this season had a full episode or two too much rom-com style disagreements, but it was more or less paid off later. Ultimately didn't enjoy that being more of a throughline in the stories this season compared to what I remember of the priors.

My least favorite of the 3 seasons, but still very good. Really wonder how far they'll go with things, hard to see a nuclear attack or something ever actually happening. They just had a better story to tell and more meaningful beats in the prior season.

Regarding the no sound bug when watching 4K HDR events or DVR recordings with Dolby set to ON:
I got rolled back to H708 last night after getting an email from the support team. It fixed the bug.

The email indicated that they believed they found the issue, and if the fix works, they would roll it out via an update in the coming weeks.

So... we should see that bug exterminated in the near future.

Hmmm, I'm not seeing anything like those events in our Hopper 3 guide for tonight or Saturday.🙁

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

edit — I now have the 148-01 4KFox events for Saturday, but not anything for 148-02 or 148-03 which don't even show as available channels. I do have 148-04 4KUSA.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

The only thing I can see that is compelling is the AV1 decoding done in the A19's hardware instead of the current ATV4K's processor.

Not a bit. IMO, apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only stick I with the Apple tv's is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is not worth sticking with it. Later, Apple!

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

For quite a while now, people with a VIP211k have been losing their recordings on their activated external HDDs... even when there's nothing physically wrong with HDD. I believe this is an intentional and underhanded tactic that Dish is pulling in an attempt to force users away from the VIP211k.

They are obviously regretting that they ever let users have a "non-dvr" dvr in the first place. You would think they would be happy charging you a $40 one time fee... and then be happy letting the customer be the one responsible for HDD failures.

Dish clearly hates the 211k bitter-clingers. This recording deletion problem is intentional (IMO), and I think it is just one more tool that they are using. Hopper and a 2-year agreement... that's what they want you to have. Think about that... a 2-year agreement... with a company $30 Billion in debt (that's with a B). What happens when all that debt causes them to drop the channel that may have been your whole reason for having Dish in the first place? Guess who's stuck with a service that no longer suits their needs... for the remainder of the 2-year agreement.

On top of that, they don't want you to install it yourself. I purchased and installed all my equipment myself. That used to be common. Now, they lie to me and tell me that my dish must be updated to use a Hopper. Funny thing is... they don't even know what dish I have because they didn't install it, and I didn't tell them. If you ask what type of dish/LNBs the hopper needs... good luck getting an answer. All they know is that whatever you have needs to be upgraded by an installer.

It is quite apparent to me that they care much more about staying in their box, than they do working with the customer. That's too bad, because it hasn't always been that way. It's like they are totally unaware of the current business environment that they are trying to compete in.

I have been a customer since 2010. I will be cancelling my service before the next period. Yeah, I know, my $1,200 a year won't make a difference to them. It just seems like they have forgotten who needs who, especially when you consider the competition in today's streaming world. But hey, they will have succeed in forcing me off the 211k.

Actually, it is. A couple of people PMed me when I posted this, and when I asked for an address, they never responded. Then I just sort of let it go. Send me a PM to continue the discussion

Well, after nine months of being on pause, I finally figured out that I was wasting $5 a month. So I cancelled. For the first time since 2010, I no longer have a Dish account.

I do have to say that I did appreciate the account pause option. That just gives a person some time to see what the fallout of cancelling will be... without having to go all the way over the cliff first.

Since I never once had an "oh shoot, I need Dish Network for..." moment, the decision was a lot easier.

Funny enough, when I called to cancel (for real, not playing the pricing game), all of a sudden, they were offering me deals that I was told before that I couldn't get without changing out my VIP211k. Now, I could have had those specials with them just sending me a new card for the receiver. LOL!

Of course, my mind was already made up because of having not missed the service while on pause. That, and the fact that I bet the 211k still kills recordings.

All in all, I'm glad that I had Dish for all those years. I just outgrew the need, and they pressed the issue by deleting recordings. I would have eventually went this route without the deleted recordings issue. But, for sure, that did hasten the outcome.

I'll still pop in at this site from time to time. Believe it or not, I still have a C/Ku BUD that I intend on playing with again if life ever slows down.
