By jove, I think he's got it!

I've been meaning to get into fta for some time now. I acquired an old muzak dish from the store where I used to work, but never has LOS at my old apartment. Over a year and 2,000 miles later, I finally got the thing put together and got some aiming experience. I was able to hit 125W, after some effort. Most everything scanned in except for OETA. I figured it's not bad for a newbie.

The only problem is that the balcony is less than half the size of the old one, so the 1m fiberglass dish on NPRM is just too big. I'm getting a Geosatpro 90cm tomorrow, so that I still HAVE a balcony. I'm sure I'll be posting some noob questions in the coming days, and soon the 1m will be in the classifieds section with photos. I'm in Grand Junction CO, and it'll be dirt cheap if another SatelliteGuy picks it up in town.

Next question: I know when you add more lnbf's to a dish, they won't get quite as much signal as the center lnbf. At what point is one "too far" from boresight? The dish is still parked on 103w with a second lnbf at 97w (the two are actually barely touching.) Would it be worth trying to add another one for 91w or 87w? Or would 87 simply be too far off to be able to get much?

Should be able to easily cover +/-15 degrees from the centered LNBF with the 1.2m.

The fiberglass dish would be tough unless I figured out a new way to mount it. With the size and shape of my balcony, the only place to put it right now is right in the middle of the balcony. Here's the layout right now:

Using the current mount for the 1m, it would have to be put in the notch by the sliding glass door, further encroaching on our usable space. It has to be far enough back to see over the railing (41" high), but not so far back that the upstairs balcony blocks the top of the reflector. It can't fit on my temporary mount for the 90cm (two 4x4's screwed together). The two mounts are completely different, and if I were to swap the reflectors I'd have to make an adapter plate for the hole spacing, and have to worry about the different offset angle. It would still be questionable given the wight difference between the two reflectors.

I'll probably move the 90cm to the taller NPRM this weekend (upper left corner) and see what sort of space I have to work with. A more drastic option would be to swap out the antenna for one that's VHF-hi/UHF, give up channel 2, and watch it as a lower-quality subchannel on 27. Then I might be able to move the table that's hiding the antenna.

The dish is on the taller NPRM, and lo and behold, a letter from a cranky neighbor appeared on my door! She says the dish is not allowed according the the lease (incorrect), and that it is interfering with "everyone's lower cable channels that we have to pay cable for." I'm curious as to when the supposed interference stated, since there were no issues when the dish was set back further on the balcony. I'll ignore her for now, since I spoke with the property manager a few months ago and they were fine with it.

I'm enjoying the dish so far, but now I have a bigger issue: where to park it. I don't have a motor yet, so right now it's still parked on 103W and 97W. We love some of the channels on 97 & 103 (especially a couple newer feeds on 103), but the whole idea of the dish was to get the PBS's on 125. Of course I also accidentally found a $channel ITC on 123W my wife likes, which is too close to 125W. It's a bit chilly out, but I'll probably park on 125 for a few days and see how we like it.

I'm not sure if I should jump right into the fray and buy a motor. The pole isn't 100% plumb just yet, and I should probably do that before anything else.

So far I'm still parked on 103/97. When I scanned free channels only, 97W gave me 208. Does that sound about right?

Am I the only one that hates what Dish did to their mobile app?

I thought I would come here and find lots of complaints about the update to the dish anywhere mobile app, but am not seeing any. It used to look just like the desktop webpage. Now you can no longer filter by sports channels or movie channels. Plus that they made it look like a big button telephone and you see fewer channels in the screen which requires more scrolling. Yes I realize you can look at sports then select which sport you want to look at, I just liked being able to see all sporting events in the guide with all other channels being filtered out. Am I alone in the wilderness on this?

I'm not a big fan of the new layout, especially on my Apple TV. It used to look like the old Guide layout on the Hopper 3, but they changed parts of that, too.

New Apple TV 4K released, plus other Apple Home devices.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.


It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

Not a bit. IMO, Apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only reason I stuck, is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is a deal breaker. Later, Apple!

they all do that anyways.. ever notice your cell phone slows down when you come up for an upgrade.. :what. apple's been making money off of software and not hardware for a while

No. Makes me wonder if that is Apple or the carrier. I am on pre-paid, so I never get "an upgrade." I still have my old iPhone 11 Pro as a second line, and it runs iOS 27 just fine. My iPhone Air, which is still a current model, doesn't really seem that much faster in regular use. It is better in other ways, and worse in some ways than the 11 Pro (size), but performance really isn't a big differentiator, especially since I replaced the battery in the 11 Pro. If I had gotten enough storage when I originally bought the 11 Pro, it could still be my primary device with no issues.

Yeah, they boot up a bit slower than Roku, but the OS does a lot more, so it makes sense. How often are you booting them up that is a differentiator? Aside from OS updates, mine are on all the time. I will say the ATV4K is generally quicker than the Roku Ultras I have, when it comes to launching apps and responsiveness, not that the Roku is sluggish.

Anyone else watch this show? Any guesses as to what was in the box Gibbs gave to Abby that was on her desk? It look liked it was glowing.

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.

Might be worth a watch when it comes out. Looks like typical big corp against the little guy movie BUT....there is a reason this plot type is so oft repeated, it draws audiences.

If you're going try to read / listen to the book (can't recommend the audio book enough) before this comes out, I'd avoid trailers.

Forgot to comment. I did watch when it first came out on MGM. I enjoyed it a lot. I think reading the book made it easier to watch. Several friends commented it was a little hard to follow.

I agree. That can go for pretty much any book vs movie. Back when I was single I would read any Stephen King or John Grisham book I could get my hands on. When you read a book you make up the scenes and characters in your mind.....the movie version always disappoints.
