I've read and seen videos that show a mouse working with the Hopper. I tried my wireless mouse to no avail. Is this feature still working?

I may have to give that a try!

A few months ago I saw this video and I tried this as well as keyboards (one can dream, can't they?) and nothing ever worked. Bluetooth, wired, USB wireless. Nothing. I seem to recall from someone that a mouse worked at one time but Dish took that functionality away. Kinda like that ultra-cool remote prototype and interface enhancement they showed as CES, then poop-canned (almost) all of it.

I've always commented that a mouse and keyboard interface have to be two of the most common and easiest peripherals to implement into equipment. So those more advanced customers have this option, and the rest who would not use it simply don't realize it's there. Never understood why Dish and Echostar never just invested a few days, implemented this ability and moved on years ago... :imconfused

My guess is that they thought about what the typical customer might use it for and decided that they couldn't think of a compelling use. Once the touchpad remote was off the table, pointer-level support for a system without a standard pointing device is useless.

Correct. But looking at it from a dedicated device perspective, like a DVR (as opposed to a typical PC), it's a much different environment. You don't have to worry about developing interfaces or drivers for literally thousands of devices, do not have third party software grabbing up all the memory and processing power. It's very much a closed environment that Dish controls. If a DVR is slow or sluggish due to resource issues then there is no one to blame but yourself if you are Dish. Aside from the processing of the video for playback and storage, I cannot believe that a somewhat limited capability device like a DVR would need massive amounts of processing power or memory just for the basic user interface.

You clearly don't comprehend the breadth of what is going on in a modern DVR. From 10+ day guide juggling to worrying about what happens when a client fires up or the phone rings, there's a considerable amount of activity that is taking place. Every model was a solid performer when introduced (save the early "cost reduced" DIRECTV HR2x models) and most have been hobbled at some level by creeping featuritis.

Whether it is DLNA capability or adding stuff like Netflix and Pandora, it all takes resources. We discount the impact because we see the features on various small streamers and sticks, but these other devices aren't expected to do a whole lot more than authentication and the UI -- the rest is all hardware. The streamers that do more advanced functions are pretty powerful in their own right.

Well, no go. I even went thru menus hoping to find a related option. Tried powering up with it installed, and tried installing it later.

No joy with the Logitech C-BS35.

Actually, I do. My comment was geared toward the initial topic of the thread of a mouse or even keyboard interface. That, being part of the basic UI I was referencing, in no way is resource intensive. I totally agree on your points about the DVR inner workings and additional features. But moving about the UI, selecting things, managing interrupts from mouse/keyboard/remotes, searching, is not heavy lifting programatically.

Sorry if I was not clear on my frame of reference.

A keyboard and pointing device would be SO useful. Not only for menus, but for searching and might make FB actually useful.

The late unlamented Dishplayer 7100/7200 had keyboard capabilty. I miss that. great for searches. Nit sure I would need a mouse though.

I've tried the FB app once or twice. It sucks... really bad. Lack of keyboard or mouse support wasn't the reason.

I bought the fixed color version of these bulbs for my store several years ago...work great and no more replacing ballast. Finally had one go out and when I went back to Amazon I saw that now they come in selectable versions so no more guess work as to what color light would do best in a certain area. They are now double OR single ended...used to be strictly one way or the other. If any of you are looking at replacing the old style 4 or 8 ft bulbs, you might want to give these a try. The 8 footers are BRIGHT. I put 5 in my shooting/target shed and you can get a decent tan if you are in there long enough.

When we re-lamped my in-Laws' house for sale last year, we were able to get all the Edison bulbs and a few fixtures with switch-selectable Color Temperature. We tried a few and settled on 3000°K as the best fit for the house. Matching the lighting in all the rooms made for an inviting experience. The Shop was the only place that we went with 4000°K for the LED 4' fixtures.

The house was sold within a month of going on the market, so we must have done something right.

The other advantage is if the new owners decide that they prefer a warmer light, they can unscrew the bulbs (I think it was close to 70 bulbs) and set them to the 2500K/2700K settings.

I'll have to check these out. Thanks!

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Scott, I was having major issues getting connected around noon ET. Looks fine now. I captured a Safari session that was showing high CPU utilization in the Rendering of the page, like 90+%. I have a JSON file I created that I could share.

Love Tony in Charge as director. Liked how the Secretary of Navy told him that the press release about him being the new director of NCIS had went out an hour ago. See you on Monday! when she left. I hate the LaRoche guy and wanted him to get taken down. He reminded me of Pete Hegseth the way he looked and his haircut.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Meh. The 4Ks I have will do everything that these do that I need them to do.

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

The only thing I can see that is compelling is the AV1 decoding done in the A19's hardware instead of the current ATV4K's processor.

On Tuesday, I recorded the first episodes of the new season's NCIS shows on CBS (Dish provided, not OTA). The new New York series and Origins will both do Auto Skip, but the original, now season 24 does not. What's stranger, when I do a search for NCIS, Origins and New York show the current recording and the next episode it will record, but the original show only shows the current recording and some other channel showing the very first episode of season one. It makes no sense. When I set up the timers, I was able to use search for Origins and New York, but for the original, I had to scroll ahead in the guide until last Tuesday when the show was airing. Then set the timer from there. You can see its timer type is DVR where the other two are Seek. What am I missing?
Thanks!

With both CBS and Fox autohop (as we know) is not enabled for a week..But after 24 hours if you mash the FF button until the red kangaroo shows up in the bottom right you wont overshoot the program. No need to try to figure how long the break is.

So...DirecTV advertises the Choice package with 95+ bonus channels for Satellite customers. You don't want 90+ of the 95...

Excluding PPV, premium networks, infomercial, shopping, religion, and non-English programming, there are 7 channels on satellite that are not on streaming:
NFL Network, MavTV, FE TV, Free Speech, NASA, INSP, and Pursuit. I'm pretty sure a couple of those are public interest that they have to carry to meet an FCC quota on satellite.

I hope they get called out for this advertising because that is ridiculous. One big network, NFL, will probably get added to streaming when their next agreement comes up, and the rest are likely very low viewership.

What about streaming, what do you get extra with the Choice package that isn't on Satellite:
Two stations - one of which is an internet TV - Fox Weather, and Heros & Icons (a diginet). Nothing special here to look at either.

If they cleaned up a couple of their agreements, added a few public interest stations to streaming, they could probably have their lineups match. It's close now, if you take out all the garbage on satellite that they earn money on. If they can sell infomercials on satellite, why can't they on streaming, seems like a miss. A bigger miss, including those stations in the "bonus channels just for satellite customers." Pretty sad marketing right there.

Attached is a comparison sheet of satellite vs streaming for the three main packages if anyone is interested.

MOD EDIT: See Post #3 for an up to date list of what channels are available on sat but not on streaming/internet, see Post #21 for an up to date list of what's available in the app for streaming customers, but not for sat customers.

They never carried it in HD on sat. In general, on satellite Class A/LPTV and subchannels tend to only be carried in SD unless they are the market's Big 4 affiliate since the offer HD carriage to one, offer HD carriage to all rule only applies to full power primaries.

Being on the coast WTCN-CD's low power signal might have been getting wiped out by atmospheric boost on a semi-regular basis as in the right conditions the water can act as a conduit to Florida and bring in signals from as far away as the Carolinas, Texas and the Caribbean Islands, so they switched to WTVX's full power simulcast.

Very interesting to hear this, thanks for the background !

I would have thought that if the WTCN signal had problems then DTV would have requested a fiber connection or internet-delivered version instead of OTA reception.

The station carries college sports so to watch sports in SD in 2026 seems primitive. The HBCU football game they are carrying right now on WTCN could not look worse on DTV Stream (since it is a SD sub-channel from WTVX).
K
It's on the station to pay for a fiber or dedicated IP connection, most markets are ingesting their locals OTA.
M

Thanks ! Well, if any station group can afford to do this it would be Sinclair, they own 4 stations in the market.

With this heads up from KyL416 I'll reach out to the Sinclair Chief Engineer for WPB on Monday and see what he says about this signal change.

Given that You Tube TV and Xfinity carry WTCN HD I'd like to hear from him why they can't make the same happen for DTV anymore.
M
Well, this is awkward. Today the Miami Heat announced that their games in West Palm Beach this season will be aired on WTCN Channel 43, the Sinclair independent... and the station which DTV Stream downgraded from HD to SD a few weeks ago. Makes you wonder if the Heat is aware of this.

I did find the WTCN Chief Engineer (Bill Macbeth) and he said he knew nothing of what DTV Stream had done. Will look into it and get back to me.

One might get the impression that what DIRECTV does, or doesn't, is becoming far less consequential than it used to be.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
