Hi, Our current configuration is a whole home setup with a Genie HR34 (that is starting to die, hard drive freezes often), a C32 Genie Mini in another room and an older HR22 (our most reliable) DVR in a third room.

First, I've heard there might be some reasonable diagnostics I could try on the sporadically freezing HR34?? Thoughts???

Second, when our home system was set up two years ago, the installer put in an 8 channel SWM capability if I recall. The HR34 uses 5 inputs and the HR22 uses 2, again, if I recall.

If I want to go buy an HR54 from a third party (since Directv might well send me another old HR34 or I've heard likely an HR44 at best) can I do so, meaning will Directv let me do my own replacement and send them back their HR34 if they want it??? I understand the HR54 would be considered a "rental" and I would of course have to pay its sticker price but whatever. Am I allowed to do that??? If I want to ensure I get an HR54??? Just newest hardware is my idea not that that is always the best.

And can I even hook up an HR54 (heard that it uses 7 SWM channels???) along with my older HR22 that uses 2, for a total of 9 but with only SWM capability of 8?? Would it work but would just be short one recordable input or would it not work at all???

And if changes are required, are those only in-house changes or would there need to be upgrades to the LNB on the dish??

Last, does a C31 Genie mini work with an HR54 or does it need to be replaced as well (C61?)

Lots of questions there... Any help on any or all would be much appreciated... thanks...

Any chance you own a 4k TV and could ask for the free 4k upgrade (an HR54 and appropriate LNB)?

If you go through a retailer you would buy a HR54, and should upgrade your LNB and eliminate the SWM8. The new RB LNB is over 20 tuners, and there is also a 13 tuner LNB that is not reverse band. Either way well over 8.
You would swap the LNB, eliminate the SWM8, and go to using only 1 wire into the house instead of 4.

Buying the HR54 will trigger a new two year commitment.

The C31 will likely work a ton better on a HR54. It is the HR34 that is the problem, it is very unreliable and slow compared to the newer Genie's.
If a tech comes out to install the HR54 there is a good chance they would replace the C31 with a C51 or C61 to allow the new remote style and to match the new Genie. (C31 used the original remote like the HR34 did).

If you solely want to do it yourself, and not access the roof, I'm not sure if the Genie will need all 7 tuners as it wouldn't have reverse band, it may only need the regular 5, meaning you could likely stay with the SWM 8.
T
First, why do you want an HR54 instead of an HR44? the only real difference is that the Hr54 can support, via the C61K or using a directv 4K compatible RVU, 4K live transmissions. The extra two tuners (seven vs five) are not usable as regular tuners, they are only there for 4K, and you would need a reverse band LNB to use them, whenever DirecTV starts to use the reverse band for 4K. The Hr54 and HR44 have the same disk size, same speed processors etc The HR54 will only take five of your tuner slots, unless you go to 4K when it will eventually take seven, but then you will have the reverse band LNB which supports 13 tuners anyway.
And just FYI, there are now regular SWM LNBs that support 13 tuners also, if you need the extra tuners at some point.

If you are entitled to a 4K upgrade, and you already have a 4K TV (important!), you can get the HR54 and C61K as a free upgrade from your existing system. If you can't get that upgrade, IMHO you would be better off calling DirecTV, tell them your HR34 has a hard drive issue, sometimes won't even power on, and getting a replacement. 99% probability you will get an HR44. If you get an HR34, send it back, say the picture is pixelating or something.

And the C31 works fine with the HR54 (I have one).

YES, we DO own a 4k TV. Bought a Samsung 65 inch last year that is 4k capable. Can you please say more about what you mean by "ask for the free 4k upgrade (an HR54 and appropriate LNB)?"

And can you say more about the meaning of "reverse band"??? Or maybe point me to a discussion of the LNB design?? I am a retired EE but not a Satellite expert by any means... I know just enough to be dangerous... sigh... thanks...

Good question about why I might want a new HR54?? Not at all sure that I do. Just tossed that out as a way to ask and learn and yes, granted, it is the newest hardware and quite honestly I am just trying to get away from the HR34. Though I've heard it is not likely they would send me another HR34, I know they still can and if they did I would consider that quite a frustrating lack of moving forward. I was frustrated when they gave us the HR34 TWO YEARS ago as the HR44 was well out and about by that time. So buying my own HR54 (or at least "renting" one) would simply be my way of trying to get moving forward rather than hanging out with old, poorly operating hardware.

We have a fairly extensive programming package (our choice) and with what I pay them each month, I would almost guess I buy a new DVR almost every month. Just frustrating that I would have to play the "maybe you'll get another old piece of hardware, maybe you won't" if I just call them up and say my HR34 is clearly dying.

So again, if you, too, could say more about this "free upgrade if we have a 4k tv??" We bought a higher end Samsung a year plus ago with that capability not with a current plant to use it (lack of folks broadcasting in 4k) but we chose to have the option. More on this upgrade potential???

And good to know that you have experience with the C31 working with an HR54 cause that's what we have for our one mini, a C31-700. What is better with the 51 or 61??

4K programming will be a reverse band transmission from the satellite to the LNB. Don't know the specifics beyond that, but it is still from 99/103.

The new LNB for 4k is a reverse band slimline, same dish, upgraded LNB.

I would call for a 4K upgrade. It is free with a new 2 year commitment in most cases. You will get upgraded to the HR54, a C61k client, and the new LNB.
Coming from the HR34 and C31, this is a good upgrade, even if you don't use the 4k programming (I did this upgrade and moved back to the Xtra package as there isn't much 4k yet).
4K requires the Ultimate package, but you can change after it is installed if you decide not to keep the 4K programming (currently 1 channel 24/7) full time.

First of all, get an HR54. No point in taking an Hr 44 if you don't have to.

If you go through a retailer then they can upgrade you and specifically get you an HR 54

Upgrade the C31 to a c61. As long as your tv has HDMI you should be fine with the c61 as there is no composite or component output.

Get a reverse band LNB to get all 7 potential tuners.

Do not buy from a retailer online and pay any money because the box is going to be leased anyways. If your account qualifies this should be a FREE upgrade.

Only buy the leased box if you don't qualify for any upgrades through directv.
T
Claude, I thiunk you mean a C61K. There is also a C61 which does not support 4K. Very confusing.
Z
for the record: (our) techs are instructed to replaced genies with like-or-better. what does that mean? if a tech has a HR34 on his truck and rolls up at your house for a bad genie, your getting another HR34. if you have a hr54 and all the tech has is a HR44, the tech has to go run and find a HR54. that was a long day...

moral of the story: take the 4k upgrade if you have no plans on changing TV providers. you can usually also negotiate a discount for the first year too.

Did anyone have a price increase today on their equipment? I own my VIP211k's, and they have been $5.00. My bill that I received last week shows the "add-ons" as being $5.00. However, I just logged into my Dish account, and my "add-ons" are now $10.00. Did the additional receivers go up by $5.00 recently?

As I mentioned, my last bill shows $5.00 and under the notes, nothing is mentioned about a price increase.

However, when I make a change (tried to add the Columbian pack for $2 so I could generate my bill) and there is a new line - it says "Access for TV" - whereas previously that line item was not there. I hope they aren't charging $5.00 for the initial TV now...

Apparently it's not an "owned receiver" fee but rather an extension fee that's applied to 2nd and subsequent viewing. Maybe that played into their decision to force a box at every TV- garnering those fees

Possibly. In theory, $9 of the base pack has a rental fee built in. But now is this $5 a chance to get a little more? I don't know for sure. According to chat, it is a glitch and will be resolved in a timely manner, but we shall see. Part of my thinks there is a going to be a new charge, whether it is now or this fall. Here in Illinois, the law requires we are given 30 days notice of any fee changes, but I have not been given anything.

These fees are why streaming has caught on so well across the country and DISH is losing subs each quarter. Soon won't be enough subs to be profitable.

With the 1st Quarter Report just released, Dish lost another 180,000, now at 4.84 Million.

Sling now at 1.79 million subscribers, down approximately 190,000.

For comparison, YouTube TV now has about double the subscribers of Dish and Sling combined.

I'm surprised Dish still has that many subscribers. I don't know a single person in my area that is still with them after getting either Starlink or fiber at their home. They all cancelled Dish and went with streaming. I used to get offers pretty regularly in the mail to come back to Dish, but no more. Haven't seen one in a couple of years now.

Only about 3.6% of Households in the United States, still have Dish Network.

$25 a month for 1 gig, for two years with Spectrum. I'd be darned that their router was MUCH better than AT&T's. I didn't realize that what I thought was something else was the bloody router. Those buffering issues stopped when I swapped... after AT&T refused to lower my bill, after 25 years of high speed internet service. They wanted $80 or so a month for 1 gig, with no drop to a lower speed.

1gbit up and down here from att start out great was suppose to be $60 for life of service, with years time it went back up to $80 I complained about they gave us $49 for year which about to end, I Wonder what prices will be when it "up" I in no way like ATT fiber service there DNS that are hardcode and unchange able in the router are some WORSE DNS I ever used. you know how much of pain it is to change DNS setting on EVERY single wireless device...

I dropped Dish a couple years back after having them for 25 years. The pricing got higher and after we got high speed internet, I watched it less and less. It got to the point all I watched was TCM for classic movies. Many of them are on You Tube now and a Premium subscription is $14 a month. A far cry of the $100 a month was paying with AT180, Supers, and locals. I get locals OTA anyway. I took down the dish several months ago and tossed it. I owned all my my equipment, so nothing to return. Do I miss a traditional cable type service? No way. If I want one I have all of the free live streaming with Roku, the Fire Stick, as well as Google TV. Right now as I type this, I am watching episodes of "The Midnight Special" from 1976 on You Tube, ad free. Dish was fine for many years. I do not regret buying the equipment and installing it myself (No installers in 1999). I enjoyed Dish for many years. My thoughts, Dish & Direct will be forced to merge in time, or they both will be gone. Even cable companies are getting out of TV. Some are only selling the internet and phone packages.

A lot of it flows back to the 4 big networks.
Cable and satellite are their money tree.

But, in reality, each market need 1 or perhaps 2 news feeds - not 4 or more

In my area we get 2 news feeds spread over 4 local stations.
ABC/NBC (TEGNA)
Same news cast simulcast over both channels.

CBS/Fox (Sinclair)
Same news casters at 5pm, 6pm, 10pm.
Fox shows an hour at 9pm but same news casters.

Hello again, haven't posted here in a while.

This morning, around 6:30am, I woke up and found the front panel lights on my HR44 on (I leave it off all the time as it is co-located with one of my Geminis).

Immediately thinking that either a reboot or power outage occurred, I checked the software version, and found that it's still the same release that was sent out last month.

I then ruled out a power outage by checking the clocks on my appliances and seeing that they're still correct (they reset when there's an outage, somewhat similar to the "blinking 12" on VCRs).

I then confirmed a reboot by checking the Upcoming Recordings (fka To-Do List) and seeing that the number was much lower than before (it always resets after a reboot).

I am definitely guessing what happened (and it may very well be actually what happened) is that the "Reset Required" prompt may have come up sometime overnight, and it eventually timed out and rebooted automatically. IIRC that prompt comes up when new software "plugins" have to be installed.

Would like to hear your thoughts, especially since I probably haven't talked to some of you reading this in a while (was a former CE member, left almost a year ago).

Thank you all in advance!

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Our DNS provider is encouraging us to enable DNSSEC on our domains for added security.

I have gone ahead and enabled it, and am told it may take anywhere from 90 minutes to 24 hours for it to take effect.

Hopefully doing this does not harm the site in any way. (It shouldn't) but if it does, you will then know why and I will revert the settings.

But from what I am reading it should be ok. so just giving a warning as I have screwed up DNS stuff in the past. :D

Due to security concerns and the fact that the Tapatalk Plugin for Xenforo is no longer being updated we have removed Tapatalk support from SatelliteGuys.

For those who were using it we recommend using our PWA App instead which is faster and does not have all the spam Tapatalk had. Below is a graphic showing how to add SatelliteGuys to your devices home screen. (While iOS is shown the process is mostly the same for Android.)

Actually, PWA stands for "Progressive Web Application" and is basically just saving a site's homepage to your desktop where it appears as an "App" with the rest of your smartphone's Apps.

A PWA is a custom version of SatelliteGuys which is optimized for mobile devices. While it may look like the website, its actually different so that only the files needed for mobile are sent, meaning its a much faster experience all around.

TapaTalk is essentially dead. It was written for PHP 5.4 and we are now running PHP 8.4. There have been a LOT of PHP security updates since then and since Tapatalk for Xenforo has not been updated in a long long time it is not the safest idea to keep running it.

In addition those trying to view the site on their mobile devices using a browser were getting spammed on the top of the screen for people to install TapaTalk, this ad in some cases would take up 20% of the users screen. We could get rid of that ad but we would have to pay $20 a month to get rid of it.

Screenshot 2026-06-11 085611.webp

In addition TapaTalk could and was inserting their own ads on SatelliteGuys in the app which only benefitted them, SatelliteGuys was not paid for those ads they were displaying on our site. Again we could pay to get rid of those ads.

Screenshot 2026-06-11 085641.webp

And here was the cost of the Premium Tier.

Screenshot 2026-06-11 085701.webp

Now to make matters worse Tapatalk recently announced that they are going to start charging users of the app 99 cents a month to continue using it.

Screenshot 2026-06-11 090141.webp

So soon you would be paying them each month to access SatelliteGuys via their app, again all the money going to them... and you would still see all their ads too.

Tapatalk was a great program which we run for many many years, and for a long time we DID pay for the premium tier. But now with such a small offset using it (My numbers show a total of 6 members) it wasn't work paying for any longer.

In addition Tapatalk was sold to a different owner who made lots of promises of improvements and updates but then that owner has been really radio silent since, instead they have been letting TapaTalk rot on the vine.

If you visit their support forum at https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/tapatalksupport/ you will see there is not much going on, in fact most of the support questions posted there go unanswered.

Please give the PWA a try, I was a die hard Tapatalk user myself but now only use the PWA on devices. It is a much better all around experience, with no bloatware or additional ads based on your user membership level.

I don't have an android phone so I could not make a graphic showing you how to add SatelliteGuys PWA to your phones apps or home screen. But here is a site that explains how to do it on all kinds of devices. How to Install a PWA on iOS, Android, Windows & Mac [2025 Guide]

The above link also explains PWA's better as well. :)

If Tapatalk were to update their plugins so we know we are more secure and up to date and allow us to remove the "Smart Banner" without having to pay $20 a month, we would consider adding it back. I don't even care about their ads, as if a user wants to use their app and is willing to sit through their ads in order to use that app then I am ok with it.

But hopefully that explains better why it was removed. It was not done to cut anyone off from the site. :) Please give the PWA a try.

As you may have noticed we are doing a Fund Raiser for SatelliteGuys!

As many of you know I have been paying for a majority of the operation of the site out of my own pocket for awhile now. Now looking at things we have a number of renewals coming up that I could use some help with. These renewals include the license renewal for our Forum Software, Renewal of a number of our add on's the site uses, renewal of domain names etc.

I have set a goal of $400.00 - any extra that comes in will just go to fund the operations of the site. None of the money will go to me (I tried BuyMeACoffee a few months ago, and they denied me saying they do not do business with Satellite Piracy sites... which we are not... hell we host the beta programs for both DISH and DIRECTV here...)

Anyways... if you would like to help out please click the link below.

Thank you in advance. :)

I planned on removing it today, but then my fathers car broke down and I had to drive him all around to get his stuff done. Then I had a doctors appointment after that which was annoying...

Dr asks me if I have had any changes, so I tell him something wrong with me that started a month or so ago and his reply back is, that it sucks to get old... I hate that. Why ask me. if your going to come back with a smart ass answer.

Anyays I hope to get rid of Tapatalk tomorrow. :)

And we had more people donate today, thank you! The extra money is going to future expenses since things like add ons don't expire at the same time.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU AGAIN!

No excuse for a flippant response like that from a doctor! I'd be looking for a different one.

Tapatalk has been removed.

I have added a new feature which is a work in progress called "Social Feed" which displays the forums Facebook style. Its nice for people who like that, but needs work. But i have been watching this one for awhile and the author is being really responsive to suggestions and adding them. So if you have any please let me know and I can pass them along. :)

Awesome pictures, Yespage! Thanks!

I caught the end of the four hour race on YouTube so I wasn't "spoiled", but got to see the exciting last lap action in the TCR division!

I heard on the radio, after the final pitstop, Turner Motorsport were resigned to second place. 'You're in second. Don't worry about it. First is McLaren, we aren't catching them.'

Caught up to the 500... err... k in St. Louis. What a race! Andretti Motorsport were doing very well with Ericsson and Kirkwood, meanwhile Power was moving up the grid. Veekay started cautiously. He was working the tires just right, becoming more lethal later in the stint. Rasmussen was racing likewise, not nearly as insane as he has in the past. Palou was leading the race, in a shocker to all. Caio Collet was having a wonderful ride, making Ferucci potentially sweat a bit. Rain came, rain went, rain came, rain went. Generally mild sprinkles, but enough to pause racing on an oval.

Palou would kind of send Siegel into the wall. Siegel really didn't do much wrong. As he noted, you have to turn at some point. Palou had acres of room below and Siegel might have had his ticket out of Indycar stamped. Dixon was doing the fuel thing and got busted twice by yellows, not pitting before the flag came out. Then the most critical happened... Palou ran out of gas on pit lane, effectively giving Newgarden the race lead and win. Newgarden had a very early pit, so he was able to slide in, get service and go. Meanwhile, everyone else was confused and stuck behind Palou for a bit. Once people figured what was happening, Newgarden had a major advantage of several seconds. Newgarden wouldn't look back and when it went green again, he'd hold the lead for the win.

Massive credit to Juncos Hollinger who bested Penske in getting Veekay out before Malukas in a transition that was oddly bizarre. I haven't had time to check, but I'm wondering if Veekay was about to run out of fuel or cut a tire. He was charging late in a stint, got up to fifth, and then tailed back for a few laps to 10th or 11th. It looked like it was over. Went into the pits, and after the pitting sequence was over, Veekay was well inside the top ten again. It was weird. And he charged, getting up to fourth. He made a late move on Rasmussen, but Rasmussen held his position with some great driving. In fact, there was a ton of incredible racing passing, not passing all race long. Veekay would finish 4th. A podium would have been awesome, but it is a great outcome for a guy who hopefully will get a break with a big team. We saw what Veekay could do with a Honda last season with fuel save, imagine replacing Simpson on Ganassi and having speed to go with fuel saving. His 6th at Indy and 4th at St. Louis get him up to 13th in the points standings and only 5 points outside of the top 10.

Ericsson finished second, resigned to finishing behind the current best in the world guy on a short oval. Rasmussen got the final step on the podium, a nice rebound to what has been an otherwise bad year for him, and a good reward to ECR who just extended his contract.

They raced USAC cars at Daytona once. Once! People died. Aj Foyt said 'f this', and left after the first go around. AJ freaking Foyt thought it was crazy! And cars weren't nearly as fast as they are now.

I think they tried Talladega once too.

LeMans qualifying on going. WEC has d9ne a great job expanding the automotive company entries. Even without Porsche, a large nunber of manufacturers.
