I just moved to a new house this year and took my 10 ft dish with me. The HOA at the other place had been whining about it for the 17 years I was there. New house agricultural zoning and 9 acres yay.

Anyway, I got the dish up and dialed in. Old cable is run into my camper parked next to it. Old cable was maybe 50 feet long. To reach the new house I need more like 150 feet. I've been doing lots of reading but lots of conflicting info. What wire size should I have to run this reliably? I want it to work well but don't want to go overkill if I don't have to, it adds up fast.

I'm planning on running individual shielded groups for the actuator reed switch and the feedhorn servo motor. Don't want to lose counts due to voltage drop. Will 18 ga be ok or should I go bigger?

This is Michigan so we get subzero temps so cold thick actuator grease. What gauge should I run for the actuator? Will 16 ga be ok or should I go bigger?

I was looking at a 500 ft roll of RG6 quad shield at Home Depot. The guy there said it wasn't rated for outdoor. Even though on the website it said it was for outdoor so I plan to go with it. I will be running it all in PCV conduit when I do it in the spring.

I don't believe quad Shield not going to make much of a difference.

150 feet you may be looking at two-and-a-half decibel difference (I think). A power switch could be the better alternative then spending a lot of money on rg11

coax cable loss per 100 ft table: http://www.w4rp.com/ref/coax.html

There are tables to show what kind of voltage drop to expect for a given wire size with a given current flow - that'll give you some idea what to expect. You'll have to know what an acceptable voltage drop would be in order to determine wire-size/coax-size and length of wire.

If your antenna is already set in concrete you should consider the largest gauge of wire for the actuator and largest coax that is affordable and practical. Either that or move the dish closer to the house. IMHO.

Thanks for the info. I am using the traditional servo motor setup to control polarity. So all polarity is switched at the box. I do use the FTA voltage to an 18/13v switch to switch between the LNBs, but use voltage blockers to isolate that from the real LNB voltage coming from the analog box. So the only power going to the LNBs is the straight voltage. Does that make a difference?

I never had problems with the old setup so I'll see what gives me the same or less voltage drop per the new length, for the power and control wires.

I did quite the site survey and this is the best place for the dish so it's in 2 cubic yards of concrete with a new heavier pole. I can see over the trees to the south taking into account future growth, and down to 139W, and some to the east which is better than I had at the old place. It's also next to the north trees so I get some shielding. So far it's at least as good of signal quality as before.

I was young and dumb and in a bind when I moved into the HOA. It started out ok but as power changed hands, rules started being created and pulled out from archives, etc. But I actually got great dish reception, and all the local channels with rabbit ears.

The receiver provides 13/18Vdc polarity switching and DiSEqC 1.2 motor positioning data, which will not control the polarity servo or the 36Vdc actuator motor. An ASC1 controller is an example of a controller that will interface between the receiver commands and your dish to provide automatic actuator control and servo polarity switching / skew. The ASC1 also can provide the fixed 18Vdc for optimized performance (or switched 13/18Vdc if you wish to switch to a LNBF. Your feedhorn with quality LNBs can provide better performance and adjust-ability for each satellite and polarity.

150 ft distance is fine with shielded servo bundle and shielded sensor wire. As satellite ribbon cable is getting harder to source, I would recommend separate wire bundles for the actuator sensor and servo control. For the 36Vdc motor power use standard 14 gauge stranded zip cord. The Servo circuit: 18-22 gauge stranded 3 + shield. The sensor circuit 18 - 22 gauge stranded 2 + shield (or use the 3 + shield and have a left over spare leg). The 3 + shield is sold at Home Depot/Lowes as security system wire. available by the foot or on a reel.

for 150 foot run I would use a good quality solid copper core quad shield coax. While you might be fine with dual shield, the quad only costs a few more cents per foot and I would prefer to provide more shielding rather than less if it only is going to cost $10 or $15 more! :biggrin

Thanks so much, that gives me some good direction. I was concerned that I might get loss in the control wires but I'll run with the 18 ga, I was considering the same wire you mentioned. And I agree, I'm doing this coax cable once.

I was recently looking at the ASC1, but they're pretty pricey for just the added convenience. Maybe someday when they appear used and lower priced I'll go for one. My GI 2710R does it all, it's just not automatic. I have the satellite positioning, polarity control and skew adjustment, and full 18V LNB power. I use the FTA box as a simple box for signal reception, and I use its 13/18v to switch between C and Ku LNBs with a multiswitch (however the 13/18v and multiswitch are voltage isolated from the full 18V power of the GI 2710R). So I just end up using 2 remotes and blind scan each bird's polarity separately. I use the FTA's polarity instead to select between LNBs.

I've thought about an LNBF someday, but I do like choosing individual parts on the Corotor.

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Finished it this evening. General impressions with no story spoilers, but will spoil it anyways as it just came out today.

Not quite as impactful of a finale as past seasons I thought, we'll see how far down the rabbit hole things go as the latest plot twists and turns unravel. Thought this season had a full episode or two too much rom-com style disagreements, but it was more or less paid off later. Ultimately didn't enjoy that being more of a throughline in the stories this season compared to what I remember of the priors.

My least favorite of the 3 seasons, but still very good. Really wonder how far they'll go with things, hard to see a nuclear attack or something ever actually happening. They just had a better story to tell and more meaningful beats in the prior season.

Regarding the no sound bug when watching 4K HDR events or DVR recordings with Dolby set to ON:
I got rolled back to H708 last night after getting an email from the support team. It fixed the bug.

The email indicated that they believed they found the issue, and if the fix works, they would roll it out via an update in the coming weeks.

So... we should see that bug exterminated in the near future.

Hmmm, I'm not seeing anything like those events in our Hopper 3 guide for tonight or Saturday.🙁

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

edit — I now have the 148-01 4KFox events for Saturday, but not anything for 148-02 or 148-03 which don't even show as available channels. I do have 148-04 4KUSA.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Not a bit. IMO, apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only stick I with the Apple tv's is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is not worth sticking with it. Later, Apple!

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

For quite a while now, people with a VIP211k have been losing their recordings on their activated external HDDs... even when there's nothing physically wrong with HDD. I believe this is an intentional and underhanded tactic that Dish is pulling in an attempt to force users away from the VIP211k.

They are obviously regretting that they ever let users have a "non-dvr" dvr in the first place. You would think they would be happy charging you a $40 one time fee... and then be happy letting the customer be the one responsible for HDD failures.

Dish clearly hates the 211k bitter-clingers. This recording deletion problem is intentional (IMO), and I think it is just one more tool that they are using. Hopper and a 2-year agreement... that's what they want you to have. Think about that... a 2-year agreement... with a company $30 Billion in debt (that's with a B). What happens when all that debt causes them to drop the channel that may have been your whole reason for having Dish in the first place? Guess who's stuck with a service that no longer suits their needs... for the remainder of the 2-year agreement.

On top of that, they don't want you to install it yourself. I purchased and installed all my equipment myself. That used to be common. Now, they lie to me and tell me that my dish must be updated to use a Hopper. Funny thing is... they don't even know what dish I have because they didn't install it, and I didn't tell them. If you ask what type of dish/LNBs the hopper needs... good luck getting an answer. All they know is that whatever you have needs to be upgraded by an installer.

It is quite apparent to me that they care much more about staying in their box, than they do working with the customer. That's too bad, because it hasn't always been that way. It's like they are totally unaware of the current business environment that they are trying to compete in.

I have been a customer since 2010. I will be cancelling my service before the next period. Yeah, I know, my $1,200 a year won't make a difference to them. It just seems like they have forgotten who needs who, especially when you consider the competition in today's streaming world. But hey, they will have succeed in forcing me off the 211k.

Actually, it is. A couple of people PMed me when I posted this, and when I asked for an address, they never responded. Then I just sort of let it go. Send me a PM to continue the discussion

Well, after nine months of being on pause, I finally figured out that I was wasting $5 a month. So I cancelled. For the first time since 2010, I no longer have a Dish account.

I do have to say that I did appreciate the account pause option. That just gives a person some time to see what the fallout of cancelling will be... without having to go all the way over the cliff first.

Since I never once had an "oh shoot, I need Dish Network for..." moment, the decision was a lot easier.

Funny enough, when I called to cancel (for real, not playing the pricing game), all of a sudden, they were offering me deals that I was told before that I couldn't get without changing out my VIP211k. Now, I could have had those specials with them just sending me a new card for the receiver. LOL!

Of course, my mind was already made up because of having not missed the service while on pause. That, and the fact that I bet the 211k still kills recordings.

All in all, I'm glad that I had Dish for all those years. I just outgrew the need, and they pressed the issue by deleting recordings. I would have eventually went this route without the deleted recordings issue. But, for sure, that did hasten the outcome.

I'll still pop in at this site from time to time. Believe it or not, I still have a C/Ku BUD that I intend on playing with again if life ever slows down.
