Linkbox  9000i schematic

Anyone got a schematic for the 9000i? I think I need to replace the IR diode in the receiver. Either I'll do that or see if the UHF remote is still available. Or maybe I'll look into getting a 4K STB even though I don't have a 4K TV yet. I'm not sure if I want to spend the bucks but if I can get a decent, reliable receiver it'll cost less than a pizza dish sub (over time).

Replaced the IR receiver diode and now the remote control works. The original IR transmitter still doesn't work but the PanSat replacement that I bought works just fine. Maybe the IR transmitter diode in the orginal is bad also? Maybe I'll fix that, maybe I won't. Looks like there was a firmware update from February that I didn't know about, but it still didn't provide automatic time sync via NTP. Also, I tried editing the channel list with the ALi editor for the 9000i but it causes the box to go into bootloop. They charged too much for this receiver when one considers the quality.

I have a 9000i as well. This receiver has had a very weak IR setup since it was new. I have to point the remote directly at it and even at that, sometimes it will do something goofy like going into another menu rather than going to the guide. It's a pretty poor setup to begin with. I have an IR extender with one of the receiving sensors sitting direct in front of the receiver. It works well as long as it doesn't get moved.

I'm not impressed with this receiver at all. Half the time, some of the channels are late popping in, or they won't come in at all unless you switch back and forth between channels. I have a 8 way switch in the line, and I have changed it, and it still does it. I can hook another receiver to it and it works just fine. At three times the price of my other receivers, you'd think it would work better. Here's a UHF kit on ebay. Pansat/Linkbox U-30 UHF Remote Control Kit Pansat | eBay

IR receivers do have a range over where they can see the IR blaster. It could be that the IR receiver that they put into the 9000i may have had the most limited range or it's of poor quality. The new IR receiver that I put into my 9000i seems to have good side performance and I estimate the range to be +/- 80 degrees. I suppose that the UHF remote would work better, though, but I don't plan to buy one. It would have been nice if the receiver could be controlled with a smart phone app using wifi like the Roku does. And don't expect the time sync issue to be fixed. A lot of the IPTV links don't work either. This receiver sounded good on paper but in reality it was poorly implemented. It's a lot of money for something that doesn't come though on it's claimed abilities. It might have been an excellent receiver if it had decent support with a willingness to resolve issues.

Anyway, I've been looking at getting a new STB that'll do 4K. I'm going to be looking at Linux based STB's (and even PCIe and PCI cards) since Linux is open source. I have to laugh because the PCI cards can be run on linux but the only decent desktop/laptop software that's available for the PCI card is Windows based. But, unlike desktops and laptops, it's not as easy to keep embedded systems like internet routers and STB's updated. On Ubuntu, I just use apt update/upgrade or dpkg to to update software and/or the kernel. Couldn't do that with STB's like the the Azbox Elite/Ultra or with dd-wrt based internet routers. Those devices are updated with firmware from the vendor or interested third parties and that the length of time of support is very limited. You could create the firmware yourself with appropriate utilities and the knowledge and time to do so. Another problem with updating STB's and internet routers is that they usually don't use the same hardware as a desktop/laptop (i.e. cpu's, memory, etc).

As an electronic technician, I'm disappointed in the overall quality of electronic devices that are being produced these days. Oh well, it helps keeping my mind active in retirement.

I get a good laugh when I see receivers costing 4 or 5 times the price of the cheaper ones, and then they don't perform well. I have a shelf full of various brands of receivers and I bought them strictly as play toys and for evaluation purposes. My 9000i has the latest firmware in it, so there is no update and I don't expect to see one. When I got this one, I ordered three extra remotes just because.

Like yours, the IPTV links in my are mostly dead ends that do not work. I've even went in and created my own links, that work part of the time. The thing that surprised me when I got into FTA is the lack of standard formatting from channel to channel. There just doesn't seem to be any setting that's right for all the channels. The channels are either a small square in the middle of the screen, a black bar at the top and bottom, or at the sides. All the zoom features makes the people's heads partly off the screen or the graphics.

I bought a new LG UHD TV two weeks ago, hoping it would have a setting to eliminate this, but it will not do it either. The 1080i setting in the receiver works fine, but the 1080p isn't functional. When you select it, the picture has a lot of garbage in it, and the over all quality is nonexistent. Like you said, this is a poorly designed receiver all the way around. After being in the satellite industry for 30 years, the quality of these electronics is pretty disappointing.
WhiteBeard
Yeah, I forgot the 1080p problem. That probably won't be fixed either. I'm not aware of any organization that tests the receivers so that we can get performance reviews to help us decide what will meet our needs. It would be nice to get something that works as described rather than having to spend money with the HOPE that it works as advertised. There are some reviews done here but you have to wade through a bunch of posts to get the whole story. If something isn't done to determine what works and what doesn't it will probably kill off the remaining C-band users. It's bad enough that we can't get a decent BUD without "breaking the bank".

I was at a friend's house over the weekend and noticed that Dish Network has the same issue with the picture not filling out the screen. Apparently this is an industry wide issue. We tinkered with the settings in his UHD TV, and there were no settings to remedy the problem on his either. I've noticed that after the LAFF/Grit MUX on Galaxy 19 went to HD, some of the channels in that MUX are the same way.

I also noticed that some of the channels in that MUX have a lower signal level, which makes the channels stop and start for a second or two. The channels that max out on the signal don't do it. They are coming in on an 8 foot dish. I moved one of my 10 footers over to Galaxy 19 and the problem went away. Odd this problem didn't exist until they went HD. Never had a problem with the screen filling out or the stop/start issue with the SD channels.

I have to think maybe more people dont keep track of the monthly XM bill. Every time i renew i put a reminder on my calendar week before its time to renew. My wife told me the other day not to renew her and then i told her you are not going to be able to listen to XM at home. Then she changed her mind...!!

The A.I. agent appears to be better than in the past. It got to the acceptable price quicker than previous years, no human operator involved. $5/mo and I still have over $50 in SiriusXM credit from my FordPartner benefits.

I forgot you can pay that with Ford Pass points, I won't be due again till Feb, but I'll have to remember to try it ... Not sure what needs to be done, but I do have a substantial amount of points currently.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

They didn't sell many, they were pricey and not out long. Quickly got replaced by the Hopper.

They were high-end specialty, somewhat buggy and the 612/622/722 just overwhelmed it in popularity.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

On the West Coast, a 40-cent differential is common. It used to be 30 cents before the prices rose above $3.

A "full dollar more" sounds like it may be boat gas (non-alcoholic), which is a whole different discussion.

Ok, I'm bored .... actually - to be more precise - I'm bored of eating the same rotation of 9 or 10 meals that are currently my "go-to" meals. My wife works the long hours - I work from home as and when i feel like it ... which means i generally do most of the cooking ... and so by default - i also make out the shopping list ...

We cook at home 5 or even 6 nights a week - but we always seem to fall back on the same old tried and tested "quick and easy but tastes ok" meals. Week in week out.

Pot Roast - mash and Peas.
Spaghetti
Chicken Pasta in cheese sauce.
Curry & rice
(these are some of mine)

Now it's not that I'm not adventurous in the kitchen ... I'll try anything once or twice ... but we all do it. Unless your name is Martha Stewart or Rachel Ray .. we all eventually fall back on our 8-10 favorite "meals"

So i thought - if we shared some of our own go-to meals with each other ... we might be able to add a few "new" ones to our own arsenal of meals.

So again - I ask you ...

What's for dinner tonight ?

Please give me something new to add to my rotation ... its our weekly shop tomorrow - so i want to pull together a few idea's and try and eat a meal each day next week that I've never had before .. or at least something that is not on my current "go-to" meal plan.

What meal do you always seem to fall back on in your house ? Maybe its something that I've never tried or not had in a while. I need inspiration !! I've got a blank shopping list in front of me - and nothing sounds good .. HELP !

Smoked some salmon on the grill while enjoying some Blue Moon beer. Kinda cool tonight so I fired up the heaters. Here in FL, we fire up heaters once the temps get below 60 :cool As for the salmon, I seared them first, then flipped them off to the side not over the coals and brushed on some lemon pepper marinade followed by some salmon seasoning. Threw some hickory chips on the coals and then closed the vents to about 10% airflow. Yum.

The number-one US state for EV growth, according to the June 22 Yardi report?
Oklahoma.

:eek

It has no ZEV mandates and "minimal" incentives, Yardi says, but also has cheap electricity, high multi-car household rates (so, for example, a non-Lightning Ford F-150 pulls their trailers), and a consumer base willing to switch.

Never realized that Tesla is losing to BYD at manufacturing too, which IMO is Tesla's biggest accomplishment and area of innovation. Nice writeup about the state of play and how we got here though. I have no faith that we're moving any productive direction though sadly, most changes and efforts feel reactionary rather than rooted in making use of the time being bought by tariffs, with few exceptions.

So: how are the cars so cheap, and what is being cut to get there? The best public accounting comes from the Rhodium Group, which compared BYD, Geely, and Leapmotor against Tesla's Chinese operation, a fair comparison because it removes labor costs and shipping from the equation entirely. Their estimate is that BYD builds a car for about $4,700 less than Tesla builds a Model 3 in Shanghai, roughly 15 percent of the Model 3's price. The breakdown is the interesting part. Direct government grants account for about $292 per vehicle, which is 5 percent of the gap. The biggest single factor is vertical integration: BYD makes about 80 percent of its top-tier components in-house, against 37 percent for Tesla, and that eliminates roughly $2,369 per vehicle in supplier markups. Lower overhead, meaning cheaper engineering talent and administrative cost spread across enormous volume, accounts for another $1,719. And BYD pays its suppliers on 155-day terms, against Tesla's 60, which is worth about $214 per car in float. When people say the Chinese advantage is subsidies, the per-vehicle number says otherwise. When people say it is slave wages, the Tesla Shanghai comparison says otherwise too. The advantage is mostly that BYD decided, twenty years ago, to make its own batteries, its own motors, its own power electronics, and its own semiconductors, and Western automakers decided the opposite.
harshness
The EV company to watch out for is SAIC. They seem likely to take over Government Motors at some point.

GM originally struck a JV deal with SAIC to gain access to China. Now SAIC has taken China back with the substantial library of technology GM shared and they're looking to export to Mexico, South America, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.
