Last year a friend of mine in the Los Angeles area asked me to put up an antenna at his vacation home in San Juan Capistrano. I had previously told him there was not much hope based on TVFool results but he really wanted to give it a try rather than use a pay service for just a couple of days per week. We bought the Antennas Direct DB4e with the add on high VHF rod. I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked. The major Los Angeles stations from Mt. Wilson come in about 75% of the time although they can break up for no apparent reason. I think TVFool is not extremely accurate in such extreme fringe situations. On some days the San Diego channels actually come in better than LA and according to the chart they should be almost impossible.
One channel that is always dependable is KVCR the PBS outlet for the Inland Empire. Again on TVFool it should not be very reliable but if we turn the antenna in that direction it is watchable day and night. I keep an eye on changes coming to the LA market for this reason and now I see that KVCR has sold out and will be moving to low VHF 5. I have "Goggled" around and can not get a date on when this expected to happen. Even more so, I have no idea if channel 5 will come in as well as the current channel 26. Low VHF had a reputation of floating over ridges better than UHF so that would be a hopeful sign. On top of that I also have not located a single low VHF antenna currently for sale on the internet. I knew Solid Signal and Summit Source used to have at least one but now they seem to be discontinued. I have several low vhf/high vhf uhf combiners and it would be ideal to couple a low vhf antenna on to the current set-up so as not to need the pole to be rotated to get KVCR.

If any members have any thoughts on this interesting situation it would be a great discussion point.

I live in SW Los Angeles, and often times when the weather is right, and the antenna properly set, I can pick-up KVCR in my home. There are certain spots in Southwestern Los Angeles County where you pick up KVCR, especially with the hilly terrain in the area. Going back to when I was a DirecTV subscriber in the mid-2000s, that station has always had transmitter issues, and I believe there was even a point where it was off of DTV for months.

Interesting that DirecTV used the OTA signal instead of a fiber run for their uplink.

Being physically isolated from the mainstream stations may make fiber unattractive.

I'll just add that despite Low VHF's advantage of traveling farther and it having cheaper power requirements, at least in the way, way early years of Low VHF's use in broadcast TV, one could at least get a very poor image when other channels would show snow, its cancer is NOISE. Low VHF, for several decades had suffered tremendously as our world has moved forward in technology and ever more RF "littering" our skies and landscapes. Getting a Low VHF broadcast channel with even a barely passing PQ as far back as the 1970's was nearly impossible in the LA area because the picture was littered with visible noise and it was more susceptible to noise from house wiring, as well. Now, the High-VHF was shockingly easy to get a great PQ with little effort almost anywhere, and still is the most robust signal strength I can measure. Of course, matters of myriad transmitter power restrictions on UHF bands of OTA channels plays a part in High-VHF being the KING of reliability of signal even today. Let's remember that in the early years cable's big draw in the LA/Socal area was not necessarily its content, but is ability to provide local stations with far more reliability and better picture quality in what was an absolute maze of obstructions (and other reasons) that made enjoying OTA TV a frustrating and inferior experience for far too many residents in the area, and I mean areas that were OUTSIDE of CATV required areas.

As for TVFool and other such sites: YMMV--especially in the Los Angeles and southern California area. LA is riddled with hills, mountains, canyons, valleys, all manner of man-mad obstructions including lots of buildings, and LOTS and LOTS of RF NOISE! Yeah, depending on one's home location in San Juan Cap on a hill or perhaps at a lower point in SJC, but with no hills obstructing the line of eye site to some transmitter in Riverside (KVCR), some people are gonna get KVCR really strong, while most outside the IE won't. And even within the IE, it is still a crap shoot. I have found that sites like TVFool to be as accurate as they can be, but it is very difficult for those sites to adjust those general predicted ratings of reception in the obstructed, mega RF noisy area called Los Angeles/southern California. In the LA/SoCal area, the home that gets all OTA broadcast channels pretty strong is just a few blocks from the home that has no hope and of getting ANY broadcast OTA signals AT ALL, often because they are just a little too close to that hill than that other house 2 blocks away that gets all the OTA signals.

There is also another issue of transmitters on Mt. Wilson, and those on nearby and lower elevation Mt. Harvard that make all the difference in the world to people trying to get the OTA channels they want. The thing is, that TVFool may have been spot on if you were at the home just TWO DOORS down. Not your fault, but I don't think TVFool or other sites that have nearly identical info should be expected to be a perfect match for all homes in the very messy LA/SoCal area. Yeah, most of San Juan Cap is probably going to get San Diego stations more reliably since there are virtually no obstructions in that direction, but obstructions may existe if aiming towards Mt Wilson and Mt. Harvard--and the vast majority of people in SoCal really want the LA stations much more than SD ones, anyway, so it is a big yawn when you tell folks they can get the SD stations instead. Believe me. I know many people in the SD DMA who would gladly take LA TV stations over SD ones any day, and my family in Temecula thank the heavens they are in the LA DMA and not the SD DMA. I LOVE San Diego and its perfect, beautiful bay, but the people there have had a hunger for LA TV stations for DECADES.

Well, I just hope no LA stations move to Low-VHF not only because of its inherent disadvantages, but because a lot of people have antennas that can not receive Low-VHF anyway. Well, let's just suffer through the re-pack together.

I hope that these TV stations that are moving entirely to another band, especially from UHF to low-VHF run some public service announcements explaining that viewers may need another antenna. I still do not understand why most stations keep the actual frequency they broadcast on a closely guarded secret. I have explained the difference between virtual and physical broadcast channels to two friends who hold advanced degrees in non-technical fields and I am a retired math and science teacher with some experience in carefully worded presentations and still they would later reply, "but channel 4 is my favorite", or "why can't I get channel 2".
I am sure some viewers in KVCR's area are still using old 2-83 antennas from the pre-digital age and if they are in a favorable location may not experience difficulties. Of course KVCR will remain "must carry" on cable and satellite and those few of us who just love to experiment with this stuff will find a way. The next time I visit my friend in San Juan Capistrano I just may hack off the VHF end of a small 2-83 antenna I have under the trailer and take it out for just such an experiment.

Full-range antennas never went away. They've been around since UHF TV was a thing but they just weren't hip during the DTV era.

Los Angeles has had VHF-low channels the whole time.

HoTat2 reported: "With all the repack movements I was thinking of replacing my current VHF-hi/UHF Winegard HD7697P with the VHF-lo band capable cousin the HD8200U such as.

Winegard Heavy Duty Platinum VHF UHF FM Outdoor TV Antenna (HD8200U) from Solid Signal"

That's exactly what I did a few months ago. The HD8200U is working very nicely and is picking up low VHF, low power 3 kw KQRO channel 2 from 55 miles away very reliably. It's also working well for the other low VHF stations. Besides channel 2 we have stations on channels 3 and 4 here in the San Francisco Bay Area, and at repack time a station from Sonoma, KRCB, will be moving from channel 23 to channel 5. The antenna also works well for the stations on high VHF and UHF. I'm receiving stations on high VHF, channels 9 and 10, and on UHF channels 21, 25, and 46 from Sacramento/Stockton's tranamitter site that's 65 miles away. I'm very happy with the antenna, but I had to guy it at three different levels because it really catches the wind.

Here's a picture of my Winegard HD8200U atop a Yaesu G-450A rotor with an Antennas Direct XG91 UHF antenna and the smaller Antennas Direct SR-15 UHF antenna below it.

Terrible tragedy. You would think that they would have safe guards in place that would prevent something like this from happening. I guess if you are going to ride in a passenger train it might be best to get a car near the rear.

They will have to look at the switching sections to determine WHY 2 trains were on the same track ... at the same time.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

That goes for a lot of people. I've been advertising on radio for more than a decade now and am very familiar with this subject. While it is still a valuable tool, it has far less impact than it did just a few years ago. The best reaction I get is from a local Country music station....they play a mix of older and newer music and have a very big footprint.

No, just regular FM stations. One is the country station I mentioned and the other is a Talk Radio station which used to get fantastic results but honestly, since the death of Rush Limbaugh, talk radio just doesn't do as well. There were two guys who had an early morning show which was hugely popular here in the southeast but one of them retired a couple years ago and the show just doesn't garner the same numbers as it used to.

You knew the answer before you asked it.

I can't recall having encountered a local ad on Sirius, and I don't imagine it is any different on XM.

For those dazn nba channels are they sat only or sat & streaming
K
Both, and they just made it official with a multiyear deal that also includes TV Everywhere authentication for the DAZN app, and commercial distribution.

DIRECTV, the premier provider of digital television entertainment in the United States, and DAZN, the world's leading sports entertainment platform, today announced a new multi-year distribution agreement for local telecasts of Cleveland Cavaliers, Indiana Pacers, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, and San Antonio Spurs games for DIRECTV streaming, satellite, and U-verse customers in each team's respective NBA-designated home territories.

These DAZN telecasts will be available to DIRECTV customers who subscribe to the Choice or higher packages and to U-verse TV customers who subscribe to the U200 or higher package. Each of DAZN's team services provides live pregame, postgame, and in-game coverage for the respective team.

In the coming weeks, customers who receive access to these teams via DIRECTV will also be able to login to the DAZN platform at no additional cost using their DIRECTV login credentials.

This agreement also provides distribution rights to each of the five NBA teams to all of DIRECTV FOR BUSINESS' thousands of sports bars, restaurants, fitness clubs, and other commercial venues located within each team's respective region.

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.
