Think about it. With all the coronavirus responses we've seen so far, what is the reason to keep a Live streaming service subscription going? And this applies to cable/sat also.

Sports have nearly disappeared, new episodes of series that aren't already in the can won't be shown, many new shows won't appear, nor will new seasons of existing shows.

So why pay for reruns? Broadcast channels have already indicated they will start doing reruns of this seasons shows to fill in the space. Late night shows tried to do their thing with no audience, but that hasn't worked so well.

For us cord cutters the easy solutions are to use Netflix, Prime and Hulu for paid services. We could also start using the free ad-supported services like Pluto, XUMO and others more.

For me, when everything new is finished until the dust settles with the coronavirus reactions, I'll just save $50 a month by cancelling my live streaming service.

How about you?

I think this will be over soon, its been around since January according to locals and hospital workers where I'm at. Just no testing was available to confirm with many unexplained pneumonia cases locally with negative influenza results so it may have already peaked. We had unusual cases like a family of 4, 2 ending up on ventilators with pneumonia in January with the exact symptoms of Covid19. The H1N1 virus may end up being worse 10 years ago killing 12,469 Americans according to the CDC and it had little fan fair.

Government officials are preparing for a curve like the one seen in Italy (and now Spain), with cases and deaths continuing to spike. We are a week or two behind Italy and far from a peak. If we had started testing extensively and taking more preventative measures to limit the spread back in January, then we more likely would be on the other side of this by now. The shutdowns and social distancing are designed to "flatten the curve" so hospitals don't get overwhelmed. Unlike COVID-19, there was actually a vaccine and anti-viral treatments for H1N1. That's what makes COVID-19 so scary and why we are seeing such an unprecedented reaction right now to not stop, but slow down its spread. The fact that it's potentially been in the US since January (as you say) spreading undetected makes it all the more potentially scarier. People have been carrying and spreading this virus exponentially through the entire country since then; those with milder symptoms thinking they just had some run-of-the-mill flu. If current efforts to slow the spread are effective, I agree that we may end up seeing an overall lower death rate for COVID-19 than for H1N1.

Here's a week old chart that shows the prospective curve of number of cases:

Um, I'd look at rates, not count. The susceptible population of the US is 5 times the population of Italy. For the rate to be the same, the count would be 5 times greater.

I heard this morning who knows how many have it that have little or no synonyms of the bug? One guy said he didn't even have the cough, just a temp and tightness in his upper chest for a couple of days. He is still quarantined, as he was tested positive, but little issues. Also remember over a million people each year lose their lives from auto accidents and how many lose their lives from murders, or even the more common flu virus. One nice thing about TV, is you say at home and watch it. You do not have to out in front of people. Lots of entertainment in this day.

Median age in Italy is almost 48 years while here in the US is 37.......should be taking into account also.

In the US, the number of people that die in auto accidents isn't that high, it's less than 40k. Also, less than 40k die of firearm-related injuries.

The problem with COVID-19 is that without intervention, the death toll in the US was predicted to be over 4 million. That's more than the total annual deaths in the US, less than 3 million. I think the estimate for over people 70 was 4-8%. Oh, and influenza killed just over 55k in 2017.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Meh. The 4Ks I have will do everything that these do that I need them to do.

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

Don't tell them that. They'll adopt planned obsolescence.

The only thing I can see that is compelling is the AV1 decoding done in the A19's hardware instead of the current ATV4K's processor.

On Tuesday, I recorded the first episodes of the new season's NCIS shows on CBS (Dish provided, not OTA). The new New York series and Origins will both do Auto Skip, but the original, now season 24 does not. What's stranger, when I do a search for NCIS, Origins and New York show the current recording and the next episode it will record, but the original show only shows the current recording and some other channel showing the very first episode of season one. It makes no sense. When I set up the timers, I was able to use search for Origins and New York, but for the original, I had to scroll ahead in the guide until last Tuesday when the show was airing. Then set the timer from there. You can see its timer type is DVR where the other two are Seek. What am I missing?
Thanks!

With both CBS and Fox autohop (as we know) is not enabled for a week..But after 24 hours if you mash the FF button until the red kangaroo shows up in the bottom right you wont overshoot the program. No need to try to figure how long the break is.

So...DirecTV advertises the Choice package with 95+ bonus channels for Satellite customers. You don't want 90+ of the 95...

Excluding PPV, premium networks, infomercial, shopping, religion, and non-English programming, there are 7 channels on satellite that are not on streaming:
NFL Network, MavTV, FE TV, Free Speech, NASA, INSP, and Pursuit. I'm pretty sure a couple of those are public interest that they have to carry to meet an FCC quota on satellite.

I hope they get called out for this advertising because that is ridiculous. One big network, NFL, will probably get added to streaming when their next agreement comes up, and the rest are likely very low viewership.

What about streaming, what do you get extra with the Choice package that isn't on Satellite:
Two stations - one of which is an internet TV - Fox Weather, and Heros & Icons (a diginet). Nothing special here to look at either.

If they cleaned up a couple of their agreements, added a few public interest stations to streaming, they could probably have their lineups match. It's close now, if you take out all the garbage on satellite that they earn money on. If they can sell infomercials on satellite, why can't they on streaming, seems like a miss. A bigger miss, including those stations in the "bonus channels just for satellite customers." Pretty sad marketing right there.

Attached is a comparison sheet of satellite vs streaming for the three main packages if anyone is interested.

MOD EDIT: See Post #3 for an up to date list of what channels are available on sat but not on streaming/internet, see Post #21 for an up to date list of what's available in the app for streaming customers, but not for sat customers.

They never carried it in HD on sat. In general, on satellite Class A/LPTV and subchannels tend to only be carried in SD unless they are the market's Big 4 affiliate since the offer HD carriage to one, offer HD carriage to all rule only applies to full power primaries.

Being on the coast WTCN-CD's low power signal might have been getting wiped out by atmospheric boost on a semi-regular basis as in the right conditions the water can act as a conduit to Florida and bring in signals from as far away as the Carolinas, Texas and the Caribbean Islands, so they switched to WTVX's full power simulcast.

Very interesting to hear this, thanks for the background !

I would have thought that if the WTCN signal had problems then DTV would have requested a fiber connection or internet-delivered version instead of OTA reception.

The station carries college sports so to watch sports in SD in 2026 seems primitive. The HBCU football game they are carrying right now on WTCN could not look worse on DTV Stream (since it is a SD sub-channel from WTVX).
K
It's on the station to pay for a fiber or dedicated IP connection, most markets are ingesting their locals OTA.
M

Thanks ! Well, if any station group can afford to do this it would be Sinclair, they own 4 stations in the market.

With this heads up from KyL416 I'll reach out to the Sinclair Chief Engineer for WPB on Monday and see what he says about this signal change.

Given that You Tube TV and Xfinity carry WTCN HD I'd like to hear from him why they can't make the same happen for DTV anymore.
M
Well, this is awkward. Today the Miami Heat announced that their games in West Palm Beach this season will be aired on WTCN Channel 43, the Sinclair independent... and the station which DTV Stream downgraded from HD to SD a few weeks ago. Makes you wonder if the Heat is aware of this.

I did find the WTCN Chief Engineer (Bill Macbeth) and he said he knew nothing of what DTV Stream had done. Will look into it and get back to me.

One might get the impression that what DIRECTV does, or doesn't, is becoming far less consequential than it used to be.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.

I'm sorry, but the Dock is optional. I run Arch Linux, and tbh, as someone without specific, niche needs like your radios, the GUI is really no different, and I worry less about my OS being infiltrated. The OS is less bloated; there is no OEM Software that I have to dig through to disable or remove; coding is not a massive pile of problems that require constant patching, and if there is a problem, I can easily fix it myself (ChatGPT is great for Linux or any programming issues), and setting it up to look the way I want it to does not take days/weeks. It takes barely an hour. Not to mention, a cold boot takes barely 30 seconds from Power on the being fully booted.

Ubuntu is a joke, btw

TRG would back this up better than I can, I'm sure
EarDemon
I have no OEM bloat, on CTO devices where I can access the drive, I order it with the smallest allowed drive and crack the device open throw the factory drive in the garbage and put in my own WD Black and install Windows from bootable media. For Windows bloat, I install Windows using the English - World option which limits preinstalled MS bloat.

Windows and Office features I wish to block, like CoPilot and Cortana, macro enabled Office files and others are blocked with GPOs.

Between keeping all software up to date, doing firmware updates, putting IoT devices on a separate VLAN, running Symantec Endpoint (say what you want about it, it's been good to me) and practicing safe hex, I'm vigilant but not paranoid about security.

With NVMe SSDs, my cold boot up time on all devices is under 30 secs as well. Fast boot disabled, BitLocker drive encryption enabled.

I have nothing against Linux, been paying with it on and off since 2004ish, it's just not the right solution for me.
HipKat
it's just not the right solution for me.
As I said above, and, FWIW, I run Win11 Pro and Arch on separate 250 GB NVME drives, using F8 to select which I boot to, with a 1TB SSD for storage, accessible to both OSs and a third formatted Nvme I want to use to learn Kali. It was much faster to setup Arch than it was to strip down Windows. Windows still takes much longer to boot.
harshness

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Back on the Goliath Roller Coaster ... I'm interested to find more details as well ...
Like where on the track did this happen (somewhere I read that it was on the climb up the top), which is impossible ...

They really need to take that ride and add at the very least, seatbelts ...

The Park is opening back up on Friday, the ride will Not be opening ... personally, I would keep it closed until different type of restraints can be designed and installed (over the winter).

I find it hard to believe that this ride is even allowed to be running with the restraints that exist at the moment, there are other rides that use the same type and they have been shut down across the country.

You got to believe that every ride has at least 2 types of restraint systems in place.

I wonder what and when we will hear from the Manufacturer ... and whatever governing bodies control these ...

Just think, this is a Major Amusement Park .... I would not have any problem getting on the Roller Coasters I have rode ...

Imagine what these County Fairs and others like them, I would not be caught Dead on one of them ... they get put up and tore down every other week, where is the safety for those rides ... No Thank You.
