AT&T is transitioning from traditional TV to the 'new TV' as fast as humanely possible. That's why I predict that in the next 12 months, it will:

* Sell DIRECTV
* Close U-verse
* Close AT&T TV Now, which provides the traditional live channel lineup online.
* Close AT&T TV, its new live channel streaming service that is designed to be a DIRECTV alternative.

AT&T will jettison all traditional TV products and concentrate solely on on-demand and streaming.

Wow, I've read Swann's columns on and off for years. I'm surprised to read that he thinks they'll shut down AT&T TV within the next year.

It's clear to me that AT&T is more excited about HBO Max than AT&T TV but I see no reason why they would want to completely exit the MVPD business as long as they are a home broadband provider (and one that owns popular linear cable channels like CNN, TBS and TNT, no less).

Heck, we're seeing T-Mobile move in the opposite direction. As they start to ramp up their own home broadband business (using wireless 5G and 4G signals), they're planning to revamp and relaunch their own MVPD, TVision, as an AT&T TV-like OTT service with a customized Android TV box and remote control. And it will be a long time, if ever, before T-Mobile has as many home broadband customers, for whom they can bundle in cable TV service, as AT&T has. And AT&T also has the benefits of being a content/channel owner, which T-Mo doesn't have. (Given all that, I'm not sure why T-Mo doesn't just strike a deal to resell Hulu with Live TV and/or YouTube TV.)

So I'm not buying the idea of an AT&T TV shutdown. If they sell or spin off DirecTV, which I do think is likely, then AT&T TV will essentially just be the next-gen replacement for Uverse TV (which already is no longer taking new customers). Who knows what it will mean, though, in terms of channel packages and pricing at AT&T TV, which currently closely resembles DirecTV and is based on the same channel carriage contracts.

I do think AT&T TV Now gets shut down at the point when HBO Max begins offering add-on live cable TV service, similar to Hulu. IIRC, the HBO Max unveiling back at the end of Oct. projected that would happen in 2021. (Or maybe that's when HBO Max is supposed to get an ad-supported tier. Or maybe both will happen in 2021.) Who knows, maybe it'll even get shut down before then. AT&T clearly doesn't care much about it given the lack of marketing.

Swann throws a lot of stuff on the wall, early, this way he's right about it sometimes ...

I don't see ATT TV shutting down anytime soon, heck were just now putting it in peoples homes.

Yes, thats right, even though its a Customer Install device.
I go out to put internet in and the customer expects me to put thier ATT TV in as well ....

If I do, it takes that much longer for me to close my job, which is bad for me, because were measured on time per job, and its bad for me because if I don't they call back in and complain and they make up a ticket to come back, which makes a repeat visit against me.

Either way I lose.

Plus people tend to ignore the details. He says they'll get rid of AT&T TV by end of next year. If they drop it in 2025 people will say "see he said they were going to get rid of it".

If they sell Directv, which I'm still skeptical of since there are no buyers for it (they'll have to spin it off) then I bet AT&T TV will go with it.

I wonder if AT&T will merge AT&T TV, and AT&T TV Now into one product. Then merge that into HBO Max like Hulu Live TV and Hulu?

I wonder if AT&T will merge AT&T TV, and AT&T TV Now into one product. Then merge that into HBO Max like Hulu Live TV and Hulu?

The main differentiator between AT&T TV and AT&T TV Now is that the former requires a 2-yr contract (and comes with certain benefits, like a free custom Android TV box and lower first-year pricing) while the latter is contract-free (but comes with no perks). So it makes sense that they would just fold AT&T TV Now into HBO Max as an optional add-on, given that HBO Max is also contract-free. And that's what they've indicated that they will do.

Nah, they'll keep AT&T TV because they'll want/need a traditional-esque cable TV service (i.e. more than just HBO Max) to sell to their AT&T Fiber customers. And since they own a clutch of popular cable networks, MVPD economics are better for AT&T than a comparably-sized broadband operator who doesn't own any networks/content. So it seems very unlikely to me that they would just exit the MVPD business completely and opt to resell YouTube TV as, say, Verizon Home 5G does.

Remember, back before AT&T acquired DirecTV or TimeWarner, they had Uverse TV, which is now completely replaced by AT&T TV for new sales. So even if DirecTV goes away, they'll keep AT&T TV around as the successor to Uverse TV (although the AT&T TV channel packages and pricing may very well change). The fact that AT&T TV, unlike Uverse TV, can be sold to consumers using other broadband providers is a bonus for them, although I don't think that's where they're going to ever really focus their sales effort.

Now that Stephenson is no longer the CEO, the company can seriously explore the possibility of spinning off DirecTV. Who knows, behind-the-scenes talks with Charlie Ergen may already be underway...

What about AT&T TV needing the channel contract clout with DTV because of the DTV subscribers? If they merged AT&T TV into HBO Max and got rid of AT&T TV Now then maybe they could have channel negotiation clout based on HBO Max subscriber count? Then they wouldn't need DTV.

They wouldn't be able to negotiate channel contracts based on the overall HBO Max subscriber count, only based on the subset who added on a cable channel package. So I don't see how folding AT&T TV into HBO Max helps them out.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Hello everyone, new guy here. I'm trying to solve problem I'm having with Dish bonus view channels. When I'm watching the bonus view channels then I switch back to regular dish channels, after few minutes the screen flips to black and after 30 seconds flips back to regular channels and continues to flip back and forth until I turn off TV. After I wait 30 minutes and turn back on , I can use regular channels again. So, its after I switch from bonus view channels to regular dish channels the problem starts. Been trying to fix this for a month, but no luck
Here what I've done.
i contacted Dish support and they sent me a new Joey3, but no help. Switched to a different HDMI input on TV, no help. Used different HDMI cable , no help. Used different electrical wall plug, no help.
Finally got a Dish tech to check it. He ran all systems check and was OK. Finally he brought in a small TV and plugged in the HDMI out from the Joey to the small TV. He could not get the problem to occur on his small TV, so the new Joey was working OK. So, then the problem must be myTV. He made some phone calls and came back with the answer that there must be a problem with the analog to digital switch in my TV. Has anyone ever heard of a problem like this, or is it time to be looking for a new TV? My tv LG OLED65C8PUA. TV has been trouble free til now. Thanks

New low power station has been granted by the FCC and the new call leter is K33OB-D on RF ch. 33.

Will run at 15 KW ERP, this one runs from the Westside same location as KWPL-LD a HC2 owned station.

It's going to be aimed at eastern part of Albuquerque, so it's tightly focused beam pattern.

This new station is owned by Digital Network and what kind of programmings is unkown at this time.😎

Yeah, there are some diginets like Heartland, Retro, The Family Channel diginetworks that we already have here in this market and we don't need duplicates, but bring the new diginets on like the Rev'n, Karate Acton movies, different kind of music videos on the new station. :hatsoff2

Many of these in my DMA are on cell towers, so don't always reach very far because the towers aren't very high.

Did anyone have a price increase today on their equipment? I own my VIP211k's, and they have been $5.00. My bill that I received last week shows the "add-ons" as being $5.00. However, I just logged into my Dish account, and my "add-ons" are now $10.00. Did the additional receivers go up by $5.00 recently?

As I mentioned, my last bill shows $5.00 and under the notes, nothing is mentioned about a price increase.

However, when I make a change (tried to add the Columbian pack for $2 so I could generate my bill) and there is a new line - it says "Access for TV" - whereas previously that line item was not there. I hope they aren't charging $5.00 for the initial TV now...

Apparently it's not an "owned receiver" fee but rather an extension fee that's applied to 2nd and subsequent viewing. Maybe that played into their decision to force a box at every TV- garnering those fees

Possibly. In theory, $9 of the base pack has a rental fee built in. But now is this $5 a chance to get a little more? I don't know for sure. According to chat, it is a glitch and will be resolved in a timely manner, but we shall see. Part of my thinks there is a going to be a new charge, whether it is now or this fall. Here in Illinois, the law requires we are given 30 days notice of any fee changes, but I have not been given anything.

These fees are why streaming has caught on so well across the country and DISH is losing subs each quarter. Soon won't be enough subs to be profitable.
