Bloomberg:

Dish Network Corp. and its Sling TV unit filed lawsuits accusing three of the biggest players in streaming at-home fitness programs of infringing patents for technology that improves the quality of video content over the internet.

The suits, filed Tuesday in federal courts in Texas and Delaware, accuse Peloton Interactive Inc., NordicTrack maker Icon Health & Fitness Inc. and Mirror owner Lululemon Athletica Inc. of using Dish's patented technology that "allows Internet users to stream content from across the world in real time at the highest possible quality."
Separately, Dish and Sling filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington, seeking to block U.S. imports of products including Peloton stationary bikes, NordicTrack treadmills and Mirror workout panels.

The patents cited in the lawsuits relate to ways of improving online video quality, particularly when users do things like fast-forward or rewind programs. They also allow for browsing of multiple streams without hiccups and adjust for a user's bandwidth. Sling said it uses the technology in offering subscriptions to live TV channels over the internet. -------

There's no point in patenting anything if you won't take the legal steps to protect it when it's abused. Same with copyrights.

Where is this "tvguide" shown on the EPG? I don't see it on my H2 guide, and the DishAnywhere guide only shows the Dish copyright notice.

Ok, and what does that have to do with Dish suing Peleton, et al, for patent violations? If they displayed a "TV Guide" copyright notice on the old EPG, it meant they had a license to use the copyrighted material. The license may have resulted from a court settlement, but that's irrelevant to the current patent issue.

Ok, I'm glad companies protecting their intellectual property amuses you...

Dish did come out of the TIVO settlement holding a life of the patents license from TIVO, so it wasn't a complete loss. I haven't found any links to a TV Guide/Dish lawsuit. TV Guide owner NTVB Media also publishes OnDISH magazine for Dish, so I'd be curious to see what the lawsuit was about.

Thank you... I didn't realize the action predated Dish and TV Guide both changing corporate ownership and was searching under the current names. Again though, Dish/Echostar came out of the settlement with the licenses needed to continue using the technology. Expensive, but obviously not fatal.

Actually, Echostar PREVAILED in the first trial. Gemstar/TV Guide sued EVERYBODY (as in every cable and sat company) who used any type of EPG. The suit involved the tech being migrated form Europe, IIRC. Anyway, Dish's win was appealed on some legal technicality that the appeals court ruled that a whole NEW trial must be take place. It was 2 weeks later that Gemstar/TV Guide and Echostar settled: Gemstar/TV Gude--then a dying company--didn't get anywhere near what they wanted, but at least they would get some change and NOT have to pay for a whole new trial and focus on all the other companies they has sued for the same claim, and Echostar could save on new trial costs and end this thing now for chump change, and Echostar got lifetime licenses to ALL Gemstar/TV Guide tech in exchange. This was virtually the identical settlement in TiVo vs. Echostar a few years later, and it was Echostar who got out CHEAP while TiVo had no choice but NOT WAIT for the Supreme Court (a brilliant action and subsequent move by Echostar's attorneys that resulted in a ruling requiring a WHOLE NEW TRIAL--hence TiVo's appeal to the Supreme Court that would take to long for SCOTUS to just DECLINE to hear the case) and take Echostar's money or file for bankruptcy, and then TiVo could focus on all the other MVPD's (except DirecTV who made no patent lawsuits clause as part of the contract if it moved to develop the new DirecTiVo) and all the STB makers for cable and sat and get even MORE money. BTW, Broadcom would have to have been a cohort in infringing upon TiVo's patents if, indeed, Echostar was infringing upon TiVo patents, but Broadcom was--STRANGELY--not named as a defendant in the suit.

Most often, there are no innocent victims in these lawsuits. It is corporate gamesmanship. It is all part of business. Even though Ergen knew/believed (even the Judge in the TiVo vs. Echostar case stated that "They [Echostar] must really believe they are not infringing.") NEVER had any ill feelings about the matter nor any ill feelings about his friend and CEO of TiVo at the time, Tom Rogers. Ergen spent some time on a conference call back then making it clear that there is no "bad blood" nor any ill feelings between he and Rogers, "It's a disagreement; it's just an honest disagreement. He [Tom Rogers CEO of TiVo back then] believes we are infringing, and we [Echostar] believe we are not." After the settlement, on the day of the first wire transfer of money to TiVo, Charlie Ergen said, "Now, I expect Tom to pay the bill the next time we go to lunch" It was a funny remark.

Don't ever read too much into such lawsuits and actions in the courtrooms or government agencies like the FCC when ALL companies move to do what is in their best interest, even if TiVo or Gemstar/TV Guide know that their patents are NOT being infringed (and both of those companies were in desperate shape when they decided to sue and hope to get some money for the effort). Even Tom Rogers stated clearly that any company that would not make a deal with TiVo for its tech or patents will be sued. Tom Rogers made such a statement because he knows that such outrageous games are just BUSINESS.

Before I got my first satellite box (Dishplayer) I had a wonderful box from a company called StarSight (made by Magnavox). It was a cable box that created an electronic on screen guide. You ran an IR bug to your VCR and all you did to record was highlight the show and click.

When I got my WebTV/Dish Dishplayer, it had logos from various companies and it had the StarSight logo printed on the side of the box. So the first electronic guide I ever saw had signed a license with Dish (and/or Microsoft) so my learning curve to record was zero.

StarSight got bought by Gemstar (license holder of the far inferior VCR+ system) and it's been downhill ever since.

The original DishPlayer 7000/7100--IIRC those model numbers--were hardware by Echostar and software by Microsoft, and MS had the source code, so any changes or bug fixes HAD to be done at/by Microsoft. Whenever there was a software problem, Dish has the most difficult time getting MS to act in a timely manner. Dish would get slammed with complaints and MS would seem to move slowly in any fixes, even to the point of almost ignoring Dish/Echostar. This horrible arrangement led to Echostar developing its own in-house DVR: the extremely basic DishPlayer 501, and this is what TiVo would years later sue Echostar over (well all the 5XX and 6XX DVR's anyway) at a time when TiVo was about to go under financially, but Tom Rogers does have to be given credit for using a now standard tactic of suing for patent infringement when there really was none. FWIW, I personally believe that Echostar had a settlement on the table--the very settlement that TiVo would desperately accept years later--for TiVo at least by time of trial, but Tom Rogers was going "gun to the head" result that would allow him to force Echostar to pay huge for infringement and FORCE Echostar to pay for all subsequent uses of the supposed TiVo patents or even force Echostar to accept a TiVo branded product that TiVo would make lots of money from the fees.

Of course, none of that happened (Echostar even had a back-up plan to remove all the "offending" DVR's and replace them with ViP's), and the legal team's brilliant advice of actions for Echostar was something I, and almost nobody ever saw coming until near the end when they played that card. What a huge setback for TiVo after all those years of its own legal fees drowning TiVo finances to be denied the big prize. But, Tom took a much less lucrative settlement, but all the other companies he sued ended up settling as well. It was cheaper and easier to settle with TiVo and not have to go through what Echostar did and have to deal with that lawless Eastern District in Texas where Plaintiffs BUY their favorable rulings by spreading cash all over the little town. That judge has a racket where big law firms enrich his town, and the jurors, who happen to live in the area, in these patent cases base their vote on who has spread the cash around the most, and that is usually the plaintiff. Even the late Justice Scalia referred to the Eastern District of Texas as a "Rouge Court." That Judge in Eastern District of Texas is like 97% in favor of plaintiffs. It truly is anything but lawful. And he is among the MOST admonished--routinely admonished by higher courts--judges in all the Federal Courts.

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

I don't know why DISH doesn't just start a streaming version of DISH and then if you can't see the western arc you go with streaming versions and then they could keep customers if they had good internet speeds. I mean Sling TV could be changed to Streaming DISH TV if they wanted since both companies are under Echostar. Then you would still be able to use your ota antenna with Air TV devices like I do with Air TV Anywhere with 4 ota tuners.

Because he didn't have a fleet of reusable rockets. Starlink works because SpaceX is able to launch hundreds (thousands?) of their Starlink satellites for what a single geostationary Internet satellite costs to build and launch on a disposable launcher.

But how is it reusable if it's disposable

Love this guy's channel. Looks like Walmart has thrown in the towel when it comes to conventional car batteries.

I bought a new AGM battery from Walmart about a year ago, it is already needing replacing. I thought about just buying a regular battery but from what I've read, that might not be a smart move. Might check my Forscan program and see if I can change the battery type from AGM.

When you need a battery, you need a battery.

If you can wait, new technologies are on the not-too-distant horizon.

You're probably doing something wrong if you're only getting a year out of an AGM battery. Heat and infrequent charging both significantly reduce lifetime.

Huh? How can I be doing something wrong.....I took out the original battery, that was 6 yrs old and put in a new one.....kinda hard to screw that up. I figure it was just a bad battery....it happens.

The biggest takeaway I got from this video was the Walmart batteries only had something like 85% of battery life left even though they were brand NEW. The ones from O'Reilly all tested 100% of life left.

And the Walmart ones mostly had very little warranty.

My last AGM (using now) I got from O Rielly's, its the Super Start ... I got the Platnium, they had several to choose from.

He sounds like he's trying to sell me a pocket hose.

I just had to replace a car battery this week and thought I'd look into LiFePo4. Amazon has plenty of them, but all have top posts and only one 'also' has side connections (Group 75).Then I read that they're really lousy in the cold. So, an AGM, but again, almost nothing with side terminals instead of top. In researching that, I read that most mfrs in recent years have dropped side terminals and gone back to the old top posts, which is surprising to me since those are more corrosion-prone, cause the battery to need more space and are generally more hazardous. Finally I just threw up my hands and bought a regular lead-acid at Sam's Club. They had a Group 75 "Duracell" with side terminals only. It was virtually the only such battery with side posts on their shelves

Had a Die Hard in my folks cellar for over 6 years. Pulled it out, slapped it on a charger for a day. Put it in my 'Cuda and drove it around for a week of my vacation. Next year, the same. But my dad kept it topped off for me.It was a mid 80's battery in early 1990.

Flooded acid batteries like a float voltage of around 13.5-13.8 voltage.
AGM needs a float of 14.2 volts. So if you slap an AGM in where a flooded was. It never gets a full charge.
"Why do they die so fast?" Question answered. There are folks who sell voltage regulators for alternators that are designed to boost float voltage for AGM batteries.
The other way around? Flooded will gas-off a little at 14.2 volts. But seems to tolerate it pretty good.

Lithium car/bike/atv batteries. After 3 batteries in my Harley. The OEM flooded and two AGM's (before the 14.2 volt float requirement to let them live was learned). I bought a lithium for it. 4 year, no gripe warranty after having it tested by an approved store.
The thing started like Thor himself sent a bolt from the sky. Except......try to start it around freezing? Nope. Needed a heating pad.
And I usually like to park it around events in the evening with the parking light on. Looks cool like that.
We could traipse around for a few hours no worries. Hop on, fire it up, and go putt around.
Lithium? A Dakota Lithium at least. The BMS shuts it right down if it discharges below <something>.
Come back. Parking lights off. Won't start. And you know the rest. But it lasted 6 years. A lot better than 'new every two'. And the fact that powersports batteries are warranted for six, maybe nine months. Ludicrous.

I called Noco. Asked all of the right questions. Great warranty. Save some bucks ordering directly, faster service that the wally world alternative.
They addressed (or claimed over the phone) that the shut down was addressed. Sure. The BMS keeps it form being damaged. But if it is shut down because it does become low. Shut down any load (key on, parking or headlights left on) for 10-15 minutes and you get a second try to start your rig. Not a bad thing if it really works. Right?!

Exide, Interstate? Be very afraid. They ain't what they used to be. In Florida my '70 Cutlass had an Interstate (early 90') that lasted 6 years until it dropped its plates at an intersection and boiled over. In Florida, mind you. The last Interstate.....done in 2. Guys down there would suck out the acid and put water in shortly before the warranty ran out. Make it to the auto parts, get them tested. And get a new one pro rated. No more pro rating.
You can't beat an Odyssey. Napa, AC Deco (the better ones). Yup.
The mom and pop Car Quest only sells Die Hard. For a reason, the old man says. So they convinced that a Die HArd Platinum was the hot ticket for me. l will see. Stand by!

You can't cut Mr. Project Farm down. He does great tests of all sorts of things. Not sponsored and pressured to slap a little sugar on his comparisons and reviews. Compared to the Brits and Aussies with their constant overzealous and same sounding (Dave from EEVblog) rant. I like P-Farm a lot. Of course I like AvE (Boltr) too.
Reminds me to beware when wearing shorts around the garage vice.

Opinions may vary.

And the Walmart ones mostly had very little warranty.
The days of the 84-month warranty appear long gone, regardless of brand or where you acquired it. Warranties tend to be shorter, with much greater dependence on quick prorating.

The big problem for lead-acid batteries (whether flooded or AGM) is that the US no longer produces lead (the last smelter closed in 2013) and must import it.

Recycling covers a good chunk of the need (~70%), but it isn't free.
EarDemon
I've always got regular OEM Ford Motorcraft batteries from the dealership and have never really had an issue. On my old Lincoln Aviator (the SUV from the early 00s, not the CUV of today), I had some phantom drain and went though a few batteries, but that was an anomaly and with the standard warranty I got free replacements. Taking the Aviator out of the picture, I've bought two batteries in my 24 years of driving. One battery replacement in my Mountaineer, one in my Navigator. But I probably would have had another one had I kept it around longer. Didn't have the Bronco long enough, and so far still on the factory battery for my Expedition.

I run more than the average bear. Dash cam, two radar detectors (yes, I'm aware that can be problematic when using simultaneously), laser jammers and a police scanner. I'm in Buffalo, 90 degree summers and 0 degree winters. Once in a while in the dead of winter I'll get an alert from the Ford app saying remote features have been disabled to conserve battery, but it starts right up.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

While the bye can help the top four teams and those the Cartels would like to protect in the playoff, I think the bye is also about making the Cartel championships mean something. One problem with a playoff is it does diminish the conference title a bit.

I think Dish might be the only service that still wires houses. The cable company has gone wireless, Verizon is switching all their copper line customers to wireless, DirecTV Stream, even most surveillance and alarm systems are going wireless.

And I'm guessing they've been that way for quite a while. The future of DirecTV is no wires. Actually, the future of DirecTV is probably a merger with Dish, and IMHO if Charlie is smart he'll use the DirecTV brand.

As they pivot away from using dishes and more toward streaming, the DirecTV brand would make much more sense.

Yes mine was wired years ago. However you can still order satellite service with wired receivers on the DIRECTV website. I guess you cannot if you call to order the service.

I would take an HR54 over a HS17 ANY day of the week ... The HR54 Looks like a recvr, works in your set up fine ...
The HS17 is a large triangle that looks stupid in your equipment, often they try to Hie in behind something ... just a poor design over all.

If you got an HS17 they Forced you to give up you Stand alone Recvrs ... just a poor idea ...
I had my HR54 to the end, along with my HR24's ...

At least I could still enjoy D* when traveling in the Motor home when I kept the HR54 set up at home, as well as at the lake.

It's not a poor design when you factor in that it has a Wireless Video Bridge built-in. It's shaped like a router or gateway for a reason.

We're a DirecTV retailer and there is no where in the order entry flow to have wired clients with an HS17. I heard that when it's ordered on the website the installer shows up with only HS17's and wireless clients. I don't know how reliable that info is as it came from a dubious source but it makes sense.

Yeah that would not surprise me but they do have the option on the website for wired installs. I would guess when they show up with wireless clients most people won't object. I would but a lot of people probably would not.

Well, different strokes and all that. I've had that HS17 sitting quietly doing its job for almost a decade. As I mentioned earlier, at one point I had two wired and two wireless receivers. Now, just one C61K.

Even before that I had a HR44 with an HR24 and two wireless minis. Back then, which was years ago, I would have agreed with the need for individual receivers, but at this point, I stream almost everything, including shows I used to record.

It'll be moot soon enough anyway. Wired receivers/DVRs are going the way of the POTS landline. You can't stop progress.

If they are requiring all clients on a new HS17 install to be wireless, that is not a technical requirement. It saves their techs from having to pull coax all over the house. It makes installations cheaper.
they still won't do it if there's coax from dish in the home!!
