So I've been having some problems with low voltage on the 3.3v rail on multiple desktop systems I have. I posted a screen shot pic so you could see what I'm talking about. Note that in the Hardware Monitor section of BIOS it says that the 3.3v rail is only 3.024v and when I check it at the ATX plug on the motherboard with my volt ohm meter I get 3.11v which is a little more but is still low??

FYI, I currently have 4 desktop systems that have very similar hardware and all are showing the similar problem with some difference in that voltage. That and I just got 2 NEW 650watt ATX power supplies one of which is the one with that 3.024v reading.

Hardware is as follows:

Asus P5Q Pro socket 775 motherboard with a Xeon x5460 CPU @3/16ghz
G.SKIL 8GB 4x 2GB DDR2-800 PC2-6400 RAM
ATI Radeon x1650 PCIe video with 512mb RAM
4 SATA hard drives and 2 SSDs (this varies between systems)
PCIe 4 port USB 3.0 add in card
And I have run power supplies up to 750watt with the same results. Just thought with this old hardware I could get by with the smaller 650s so I bought a couple.

So what do ya think is going on here? Any ideas?

Thanks

"That would be 3.135v to 3.465v so even with the tolerance figured in it is definitely lower than spec. I noticed in another thread you said your power sucks and you used a power conditioner to rectify an lnb problem. Since you said this affects multiple systems I'm wondering if your power problem is entering into it, although strange that the 5V and 12V are in range. Do you have a power conditioner on your computers?"

Yes, I had also found that 5% tolerance number.

Well, I really don't remember anything about a "power conditioner" for an lnb problem?? Sorry but at 76 years old I find myself forgetting more and more stuff as the days go by!

I checked several receptacles from one end of the house to the other and found 123/124volts on all of them so I guess that eliminates that as a problem.

And one more thing...............does the motherboard have a way to regulate that 3.3v rail independent of the actual power supply itself?

Just a thought...................

I've been running those x5460 CPUs on those Asus P45 chipset boards now for 5 or 6 years now and never really noticed any issues until the past year or so. The first one I did was on a P5 K Pro board with a P35 chipset, which I still have and it worked fine, and, I'm still using that one too only with a regular Pentium IV cpu @ 3ghz.

Have you tried going into the AI Tweaker to get your voltage rails up to your par?

Yup, when I first saw that low 3.3v rail I went looking but never did find anything that I thought would fix that. Any suggestions and I may give it a look again. Oh and the PSUs I'm running now vary between 100 to 115 watts on that 3.3v rail.

And speaking of over clocking..............my first was some socket 370 cpus and then I did a Slot 1 300a Celeron that I overclocked to 450mhz and ran it like that for a few years. In fact, I think I still have that processor in my junk drawer. I haven't done any of that in years though. Just haven't felt the need for it.

Oh, and where did you get those "modded" BIOS chips?

Just saying.................

Oh, and one last thing.......what should I look for in a reasonibly priced uninterruptible power supply or a surge protector for a desktop? I may give that a try as well if they don't cost me an arm and a leg.

You are not getting too old but apparently I am. I had several tabs open and associated another user's power issues with yours. :redface

Point I was trying to make was to install a line conditioner/UPS to see if it fixed your issues. I have UPS's from Cyberpower, APC and Belkin and all do I fine job of regulating the power. Just buy one that has enough 'juice' to support your equipment that will be hooked to it. :)

OK it's been a few days and I've got some additional info concerning that CX650M Corsair power supply. But first here's a picture of the BIOS hardware monitor showing voltage on that +3.3v circuit with that new "off brand" 650watt power supply. Notice that 2.992v on that +3.3 rail??

P3101157.JPG

Voltage at the motherboard plug showed +3.1v

So then I took that Corsair and connected just the main and CPU connectors and checked that one and here is what that one looked like.

P3101158.JPG

It's still a little low cuz that Corsair measures +3.32 with the meter but it's way better than the Fleabay junk that's in it now @ 3.280v. I've got to order a couple of SATA cables for it before I can install it cuz I didn't get those when the guy gave it to me but at this point I'm sure it's worth the $20 those cables will cost me.

UPDATE: Got those cables I needed the other day then installed everything like it needed to be and guess what? Booted up in Linux Mint and ran for about 5 minutes then there was a "click" and I looked and the monitor was black, then the computer proceeded to reboot to only power off again and restart continually?? WTF?? I guess it's got an over current problem that I won't be able to fix. CRAP!!

So, I guess I'm done with that Corsair power supply and will have to go ahead and buy a new something or other, but in the mean time, I put that "cheap china junk" 650watt one back in and I'm using it now so I may just ride this one until it pukes!

Oh, and thanks for trying to help with this.

Just saying................

It probably isn't worth chasing down problems with a seven year old computer even if it was once a beast.

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

On Tuesday, I recorded the first episodes of the new season's NCIS shows on CBS (Dish provided, not OTA). The new New York series and Origins will both do Auto Skip, but the original, now season 24 does not. What's stranger, when I do a search for NCIS, Origins and New York show the current recording and the next episode it will record, but the original show only shows the current recording and some other channel showing the very first episode of season one. It makes no sense. When I set up the timers, I was able to use search for Origins and New York, but for the original, I had to scroll ahead in the guide until last Tuesday when the show was airing. Then set the timer from there. You can see its timer type is DVR where the other two are Seek. What am I missing?
Thanks!

With both CBS and Fox autohop (as we know) is not enabled for a week..But after 24 hours if you mash the FF button until the red kangaroo shows up in the bottom right you wont overshoot the program. No need to try to figure how long the break is.

I'm a bit confused about the recording methods.
Do you havePrime Time Anytime enabled, by doing that you don't have to set recordings for Prime time programs on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox stations, it's done daily, 7 days a week.
And only 2 weeks recordings are saved, no deletions either.

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.
EarDemon
I have no OEM bloat, on CTO devices where I can access the drive, I order it with the smallest allowed drive and crack the device open throw the factory drive in the garbage and put in my own WD Black and install Windows from bootable media. For Windows bloat, I install Windows using the English - World option which limits preinstalled MS bloat.

Windows and Office features I wish to block, like CoPilot and Cortana, macro enabled Office files and others are blocked with GPOs.

Between keeping all software up to date, doing firmware updates, putting IoT devices on a separate VLAN, running Symantec Endpoint (say what you want about it, it's been good to me) and practicing safe hex, I'm vigilant but not paranoid about security.

With NVMe SSDs, my cold boot up time on all devices is under 30 secs as well. Fast boot disabled, BitLocker drive encryption enabled.

I have nothing against Linux, been paying with it on and off since 2004ish, it's just not the right solution for me.
HipKat
it's just not the right solution for me.
As I said above, and, FWIW, I run Win11 Pro and Arch on separate 250 GB NVME drives, using F8 to select which I boot to, with a 1TB SSD for storage, accessible to both OSs and a third formatted Nvme I want to use to learn Kali. It was much faster to setup Arch than it was to strip down Windows. Windows still takes much longer to boot.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Finished it this evening. General impressions with no story spoilers, but will spoil it anyways as it just came out today.

Not quite as impactful of a finale as past seasons I thought, we'll see how far down the rabbit hole things go as the latest plot twists and turns unravel. Thought this season had a full episode or two too much rom-com style disagreements, but it was more or less paid off later. Ultimately didn't enjoy that being more of a throughline in the stories this season compared to what I remember of the priors.

My least favorite of the 3 seasons, but still very good. Really wonder how far they'll go with things, hard to see a nuclear attack or something ever actually happening. They just had a better story to tell and more meaningful beats in the prior season.

Regarding the no sound bug when watching 4K HDR events or DVR recordings with Dolby set to ON:
I got rolled back to H708 last night after getting an email from the support team. It fixed the bug.

The email indicated that they believed they found the issue, and if the fix works, they would roll it out via an update in the coming weeks.

So... we should see that bug exterminated in the near future.
