Are vip satellite receivers becoming obsolete in near future? Can existing customers get an vip receiver activated on account these days? I heard the interactive service on vip receivers is gone for the most part. I heard all non-vip (MPEG 2 only) receivers are pretty much obsolete.

It was in January of 2016 when the Hopper 3 came out. I remember I bought one that year. The first hopper came out in January of 2012. The hopper with Sling came out in 2013 at CES. I owned all three of them and traded each one in for credit towards the newer model when it came out at now closed dishdepot.com. If satellite was still going to be around for another decade I could see them come out with a Hopper 4 with the Plus device built in, so you would only need it for all your viewing online and on satellite. But I don't foresee them being around in 5 - 7 years , at least as a satellite company for home viewing. They are losing around 1 million subs a year and they only have 7 million satellite subs now and at that rate they would be gone by 2030, if it makes it that long.

They still have a good 10-15 years. Rural areas still don't have access to good internet available to them. Starlink is out now but cost $600 up front and $120 per month. A lot places still don't even have cell service or atleast cellular data. Until high speed internet is available at affordable prices to 90+% of the nation then satellite will continue to thrive.

Texas just passed in the legislature this last week that the state will spend over a $1.5 billion to expand broadband to Rural areas of Texas. There is also money in the Infrastructure Act that was passed last year in congress that spends $42.5 billion more across the country to do the same thing. The time is running out on satellite. That is just a given now. :smug

I know most of this money is going to people relying on satellite/dsl connections, but here's hoping I get some type of fiber service in my town (most neighboring towns have it for some reason). Having a cable company monopolize the whole area is probably just as bad as not having highspeed internet at all.

In Texas Panhandle they are running a ton of fiber, but guess what? All the houses and neighborhoods that don't have cable access, despite them running fiber down the highway right next to them, they still aren't running it to these areas. It's ridiculous.

Where I live in a neighborhood of about 20-30 houses, they literally just ran it down the main road, roughly 500ft away from my house but they won't be running it to us.

So now that everyone is educated on the old VIP receivers, anyone need my old equipment?

Impressive RTCDude btw.

VIP 722 & 612 ? And all the possible dish combos?
DPP dual 110/119, single used for 61.5,.
Have the old EA DPP triple lnb and dish too. Used for 6 months- trees.
Anyone willing to pay a bit for removal, packaging, etc, it all up?

Just trying to get a few bucks for all the work to remove and pack it all up. My estimate - 3 hours. W/o patching roof and whatnot.

A member here, interested in my equipmt, called Dish, and they reported, Dish said, "would not activate someone's old VIP receivers?"
They had the R & S #'s too.
What is up w/ that? ? ?
Clean, clear acct, fwiw.
Is that true? ? ?

Thanks Bearsat, it's been a long technological journey.

As far as used VIP receivers, and not to be a downer…

I doubt there is much of market for them. They are 15+ years old now and considered very obsolete. One of my motivations for getting rid of my VIP722's was that the hard drives were getting a little sick and I didn't want them to crash on me and lose everything I had on them (I had some old 501's that did this many years ago). Any of theses old used receivers are now ticking time-bombs. Once the hard drive goes out "they're dead Jim"; nothing is going to bring them back to life. The fact that these hard drives have spun and worked for these many years is amazing and scary.

Dish just doesn't want to deal with the VIP's any more. They make more money from the easier to install DPH systems, streaming (and the likely subscription kickbacks), and the much better PPV. And I'm sure they already have all of the remanufactured VIP receivers they will ever need for those occasional replacements. Installing VIP receivers now is just a maintenance cost that Charlie would rather avoid if al all possible.

And realize that these days Dish's first answer about VIP receivers will always be "no". Some of that can be overcome with perseverance and in-depth know-how (as you see in this thread). But as you also can see here, it's not a Journey for the faint-of-heart. Plus it likely only works if Dish thinks you are going forward, not backwards.

My best advice is to junk/recycle them like Dish says, be thankful for the service they gave you, and move on. You could try EBay'ing them and let the buyer beware. But I wouldn't want to try to convince someone to buy and old 286 PC with MSDOS either.

Thanks for the detailed response.

Fwiw, the trick for those old VIP's longevity was keeping them cool and dust free imo.

They can activate them if they were purchased. Sounds like they were leased. Despite dish not wanting them back once they are leased to a customer thet can never be activated on another account. So at that point it's just trash.

I agree. I took the top cover off my VIP722's. They ran much cooler that way and stopped the roaring fan noise. It also made it much easier to be able to vacuum out any accumulated dust.

But having a long professional history with hard drives running constantly over years, it is an exercise in inevitable failure. You just don't know when.

I have family in Rural Nebraska. A new Fiber line was installed last summer. The fiber runs about 100 Ft from the house. Called to see what it would take to get connected. Pretty simple. $15,000 is all it would take. Didn't even get to the monthly charges. All that cost is to me is an FU; we don't want to mess with you answer.

Didn't see a thread like this so I figured why not start one. This is about natural supplements. If you aren't into supplements, fine, but please let those of us who do want to discuss this discuss it.

The first one I wanted to mention has been a real life changer. I'm 62 and still do all of my own install work at my business....also do all the yard work at the house. A few years ago I started noticing that I was losing my range of movement, it was even getting hard to bend over and lace up my boots. Almost got stuck in an attic because I couldn't get turned around once the work was done. Didn't think much of it and figured with age comes stiffness that was only going to get worse as time went on.
It was then that I stumbled across a video which was discussing rotator cuff tears and why they were to prevalent these days. Turns out, the culprit is a simple deficiency in MANGANESE which is key in keeping your tendons flexible. Most anti-biotics strip your body of any manganese it might have had which is why certain anti-biotics, especially those in the Cipro family. I actually knew a man who had two tendons tear while on that stuff.
Went to Amazon and ordered some manganese. Now it took a while, it wasn't instant, but gradually I have regained all of my flexibility. I can bend over and touch my toes while standing with no pain and putting on my boots is no longer a chore.
Pretty cheap too. The bottle I ordered was a 200 ct for under $13. They said to take double the normal dose for the first month because most people are severely lacking, then go to one a day.

Chia Seeds
Kinda the whole idea is to mention something and explain WHY it is something we might want to add to our daily routine.
This is what I got from google. Looks like I'm going to be adding them, thanks

Key Health Benefits
    • Digestive Health: One ounce (28 grams) of chia seeds provides nearly 10 grams of fiber, which promotes regular bowel movements, feeds beneficial gut bacteria, and helps prevent constipation. [1, 2]
    • Heart and Cardiovascular Support: Rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)—an essential plant-based omega-3 fatty acid—chia seeds can help lower blood pressure, reduce triglycerides, and improve cholesterol profiles. [1, 2, 3]
    • Blood Sugar Regulation: The combination of soluble fiber and protein slows down carbohydrate digestion, preventing sharp blood sugar spikes after meals. [1, 2]
    • Weight Management: When soaked in liquid, chia seeds absorb up to 10 to 12 times their weight in water. The resulting gel expands in the stomach, increasing feelings of fullness and curbing appetite. [1, 2, 3]
    • Bone Strength: They contain high levels of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, which are vital for maintaining bone density. [1, 2, 3]
    • Antioxidant Protection: Compounds like chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid help fight cellular damage from free radicals and reduce chronic inflammation. [1, 2, 3]

I have taken this stuff for years to help my joints. Over 20 yrs ago my shoulder sounded like it had gravel in it when I rotated it. Started taking this and after a few months I had my range of motion back. I mentioned this product to a doctor and told him the results I had and he totally blew it off....said it was just a coincidence. This has no shellfish like most joint supplements.

Heres an article from the Akron Beacon ... seeing Six Flags has bought Cedar Point and Kings Island, they are included ...
I said earlier that Cedar Point doesn't use this type of seat restraint ... well, it does use it, But the difference is, the ones up here ALSO have the Over the shoulder restraint as well ... like I was suggesting that they should have used with the Goliath.

One of the new(er) one at Cedar point the Gate Keeper, uses the Clam shell .. I have rode it many times and have Mostly felt secure, that ride will stop you part way on the ride and you just hang, till the ride is ready to continue ... I typically ride the Front Car ... when its getting ready, you ARE hanging, in the car, looking down .... it would require 2 separate restraint systems to unlock at the same time to possibly get out of it.

That's great!

Many people have all sorts of power bricks laying around. Provided the plug fits, and it's the right polarity and same voltage and the same OR higher amps, why not try another one IF the device you want to try it on doesn't seem to work right.

Some people just call them power supplies (which really isn't a good fit in this case), some call them "wall adapters" but it's an external power supply or AC adapter that converts (AC) from a wall outlet into low-voltage (DC) that an electronic device needs to run.

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Remember when you use to get a 13.5 oz bag of Chips .... Thats a PARTY Size now.

The larger discrepancies are likely from a data or sync issue. Digital tags don't cause the error, but they can spread one bad entry across a whole store or region instantly. The small cent differences are probably just rounding in the weight, the price data, or both.

The larger discrepancies are likely from a data or sync issue. Digital tags don't cause the error, but they can spread one bad entry across a whole store or region instantly. The small cent differences are probably just rounding in the weight, the price data, or both.
It's simple math. You take the price and divide by the number of ounces and come up with the price per ounce. I find it hard to believe that Walmart's computers can't carry out simple division.

The division isn't the problem, the inputs are. On the Starbucks pods, $9.22 @ $3.35/oz works out to 2.75 oz, but the box is 1.94 oz. So either the system has the wrong weight on file, or the unit price is left over from an older price of about $6.50 that never got updated. Garbage in, garbage out. Walmart's had unit-pricing data problems before, too - in 2024 they paid $1.64M to settle with New Jersey after inspectors found 2,000+ instances of unit prices using the wrong unit of measure.

THAT is most likely the culprit.

So....its intentional. The new fine needs to be a billion $...that would cause someone to fix the issue.

*nit pick* You want cream or more precisely FAT to make ice cream. Milk isn't heavy enough. When making my own, I use half and half.

Wrong unit of measure? Having a hard time believing that or were they conflating solid and fluid ounces (stupid US measuring system).

The first two coffees aren't off on the same amount, so likely the unit price is linked to some previous price. Now I have to *bleeping* double check more math? Does anyone check anything anymore? Bad enough in the professional world having to QA/QC a third party's work. Don't want to have to do that in the grocery store now too! Not with the absurd measures that are used in the US. Is that unit price for blueberries in ounces or pints...

First world problems, but man... argh!!!

You always have the option of moving to a country that uses a unit of measurement that better suits your needs.

Thought this might be a nice diversion, this same guy audited Publix's package weight....yes, I know this is different from the original post on this thread.....and it was accurate.

Love this guy's channel. Looks like Walmart has thrown in the towel when it comes to conventional car batteries.

I bought a new AGM battery from Walmart about a year ago, it is already needing replacing. I thought about just buying a regular battery but from what I've read, that might not be a smart move. Might check my Forscan program and see if I can change the battery type from AGM.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
