"Max", the latest iteration of the streaming HBO concept, launched today. This is a "hot take."

The good news: it seems to work

The app didn't crash on me. It didn't make me log in again, or authenticate. I thought it was supposed to auto-update, but it didn't. I was able to play something. So the app does get high marks for the basics. But, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be able to say much else good about it.

The bad news

First things first. I get my Max subscription as an HBO subscriber through DIRECTV. This is my personal experience. Yours may differ. In fact I hope it does. And further, I hope this is all just some bug, some teething pain that will get sorted out in the next few days. But something tells me it's not.

Problem 1: No 4K

Pre-release articles about Max said that everyone who paid for an ad-free plan would get 4K streaming for at least six months. It was never clear if that included those who got the app as part of a pay-TV subscription. Now it seems we have an answer.

Plain and simple: There is no 4K. There is no Dolby Vision. There is no Dolby Atmos. At least not for me. If you get your Max through a TV provider and it works for you, please leave a comment below. I'd really love to think that it was "just me." But I don't think it is.

I think this is a deliberate move, but what I don't understand is why they're not taking the opportunity to get more money out of me.

By the way, it also seems that the HD versions are 30 frames per second, at least on the things I tried. I prefer to watch films at 24fps and my TV refreshes at 120Hz so I don't get any pulldown effects.

Problem 2: No way to upgrade to 4K

There's no path where you could pay an extra $4 and get the 4K you want. I'd consider it, since it seems I'll be able to ditch my Discovery+ subscription. But there's no option for that. My only option would be to pay the full boat $20 a month just to get 4K. That doesn't seem very friendly. I'm more likely to simply skip the 4K, although I wish I had another option.

Problem 3: Where the heck did everything go?

I'm sure I'll be able to understand the vastly simplified menu structure eventually. It seems that in a total disregard for current UX trends, the choice of "hub" has moved away from the left side and is now part of the main scroll. Unlike Discovery+, the content is organized by network, which doesn't make a huge amount of sense. But at least I can still search for what I want and the app seems to have everything I search for.

There are a couple of other little things, good and bad. They took away the ability to upload your own profile photo. But, they did add the ability to turn off auto-playing previews. They didn't completely remove TCM as I suspected they would. The "continue watching" list brought up things I'd already removed, but at least it did carry over from HBO Max. It didn't carry over from Discovery+, though.

A path forward?

Maybe this is just launch day blues. Maybe it will all shake out properly in the coming week. And honestly it's not like my world is going to come to an end if I don't get 4K Dolby Vision. But, with every new show being so dark, it seems like you need to have some sort of HDR just to make it look decent.

Maybe, like any time two real people move in together, it's going to take a minute before you figure out what the boundaries are. But then, more than half of people who move in together or get married end up splitting up. So maybe that's not a good metaphor.

Folks, I sincerely hope you'll consider leaving a comment with your experiences. I only have so many different devices I can use to test, and so far they're all coming up with zero 4K. Just curious if you see it any different.

Honestly glad to hear it. Could be just Apple TV, could just be me. Either way I'm happy for the rest of the community

Post title seems a bit alarmist coming from a "staff member."

Are "Stuart Sweet" and "Mystery Man" the same user? Avatars look strangely similar.

Gosh, I sure wish I could get "cutting edge" flair in my handle for all my contributions to this site over the past 12 years!

Kind of makes you wonder. Both posters using "The Shadow" for avatars, and both registered within a week of each other, only one is a mod?

MysteryMan and I are not the same person. We have both been using similar avatars for over a decade. We respect each other, I'd even say we'd be friends if we lived near each other.

I started this account to use personally, as opposed to my Solid Signal account which represents the company I work for. Both of us migrated here when the Edgecutter site closed, and before that we were both at "the other site" for years.

Scott was kind enough to offer me a moderator position as a show of respect for my eight years running the Edgecutter site. It's my intention to use my mod powers in the DIRECTV Cutting Edge and Tech forums, both of which I adminned at the Edgecutter site. I would only moderate any other part of this site if there was a sincere need.

Note for the sake of transparency: I edited the title of this thread to match the article it references.

Redditors have confirmed that the Apple TV version of the Max app has a bug where Match Frame Rate and Dynamic Range are broken. The workaround is to force Dolby Vision at 24Hz and supposedly that works.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Lately my eight year old Dell laptop has been shutting off even when I have a full battery. I have had to keep it plugged up all the time to keep this from happening. Any idea what is causing this? I replaced the battery about three years ago.

A recalibration might be needed. Even if it shows full, the individual cells may have become unbalaced. And the BMS chip in the battery reports false information to the pc.
Try this. Start it up in the bios/uefi and leave it there until the battery dies and it shuts off.
It might just keep running longer than in Windows. Or run for a short while and shut off.
If it's the first case. Probably just needs a balancing. If the latter, the pack might just be dead.
Not throwing stones but perhaps just a cheaply constructed battery with substandard cells. Could be.

Patience. Keep restarting it in bios/uefi until it won't fire up anymore.
Then plug the charger in and let it complete a full charge. And see what happens. If it's better.
Do the same thing one more time. Run it until it dies dead-dead. Then just let it charge, pc shut off.
When charged, it might be better. It might not be.

There are bench jigs that read the actual BMS and override it to let a tech manually monitor and charge the separate packs. They can also reset any "time bombs" in it that cause an otherwise good pack to show bad.
Maybe Santa will be good to me some year.

You might just need a new battery. Maybe the PC power management chip is going. A Dell common thing.
Leaving a laptop plugged in with a full battery is known to reduce the life. Asus for one recommends that you don't leave the charger plugged in all of the time even when shut down. And setting Windows to charge the battery to 85% instead of 100% increases life.
That's all I got.

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.

If you can restrict the DHCP address space to assign addresses to one end of the subnet (i.e. x.x.x.50+), you can manually assign the IP address on pretty much any operating system. This is a default behavior on several popular routers. As the Router Mini only supports 235 devices, I expect that's already done.

Another option is to use a router that supports PoE to power the antenna. This article discusses that option (under PoE Power heading):

Now that I've had the v5 kit with the Mini Router, it's not as bad as I first thought. Yes, no DHCP reservations, but you can set up multiple SSIDs that have separate IPv4 subnets, and like the big brother, you can select from 192.168.x.0/24 or 10.x.0.0/16 (where "x" is 1-4).

You can also split a subnet and have different SSIDs for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz channels to handle some IoT devices. I haven't discovered what subnet the 2nd NIC on the router assigns, I'm guessing it's the first subnet.

Terrible tragedy. You would think that they would have safe guards in place that would prevent something like this from happening. I guess if you are going to ride in a passenger train it might be best to get a car near the rear.

They will have to look at the switching sections to determine WHY 2 trains were on the same track ... at the same time.
