Introducing the H26K Commercial Receiver

DIRECTV has never had a dedicated commercial receiver before. For all of the company's almost 30-year history, commercial receivers have been reprogrammed residential receivers. That was ok in the 1990s and 2000s, but the company's residential systems changed to a server-and-client solution called Genie in 2012.

Since then, DIRECTV commercial customers have been using refurbished H24 and H25 receivers. In 2022, the H44 Commercial Receiver was rolled out as a stopgap, using an unpopular DIRECTV residential receiver that was programmed to work in Commercial mode. That's all changed with the introduction of the DIRECTV H26K.

The H26K was designed from the ground up for the needs of commercial customers. It's built for superior heat dissipation and fan-free operation. A group of eight will fit vertically in a 5U rack space. It incorporates wired Ethernet as well as DIRECTV's first Dual USB system, which will make use in institutional environments easier.

And… for the first time… it does 4K.

H26K at a glance

The DIRECTV H26K Commercial receiver combines classic DIRECTV styling with the most modern user interface for the fastest and most powerful DIRECTV receiver yet.

  • Only available for commercial accounts
  • Receives SD, HD, and 4K
  • RF Remote AND IR receiver port
  • Ethernet port
  • Genie User Interface
  • AV port for modulators
  • Dimensions: 6.5" x 7.375" x 1.25"
  • Works with matrix switches
  • Works with DIRECTV for Business app
  • (*must be networked to function)
  • Multiple easy mounting options
  • All receivers are brand new, no refurbs

If this receiver looks a bit familiar to you, you're not alone. More than anything, it looks like a narrower version of the H25 receiver. I'm guessing this callback to classic 2010s design was done to tell the world that the old DIRECTV is back and that the AT&T days are long gone. The H26K is smaller in every dimension than the H25, though.
Like the residential-only Genie 2, this receiver uses a SIM-card-sized access card instead of the traditional credit-card-sized card. This saves a little space.

The back features all the ports you'll need including a 500mA and 1A USB port. This will allow the receiver to power a DECA while still retaining a port for the flash drive required for the DIRECTV Residential Experience. Power comes from the reliable EPS10 power supply and the remote is the RC73 remote used in residential Genies. An old-style RC66 remote will also work in IR mode.

The bottom has keyhole slots for mounting, holes to feed zip ties through, and even has a wide flat space to put industrial hook-and-loop tape if you would rather do it that way. It's even embossed with details like the 4" spacing between keyholes and the 1/8" offset for the screws you would use.

Bonus: A Look Inside

DSC_3131.webp

Looking at the inside of the receiver, you can see the giant heat dissipation plate that keeps this device cool. The entire chrome plate you see here is attached to the central processor to aid in thermal control. Note: Opening your receiver may void its warranty. Don't do it.

The Familiar parts

The H26K is based on the same software as DIRECTV's H44 Commercial Receiver. If you're familiar with using a Genie at home, you'll have no problem here. It also uses the familiar Genie remote in infrared or RF mode and can be controlled by matrix switches as well as the DIRECTV for Business App.

What's (just a little) different

That's not to say that the experience is the exact same as the home Genie experience. The guide is identical, right down to the 4K channels. Because this receiver is intended for business, you'll be able to get the NFL Sunday Ticket channels that residential customers won't be able to get.

Apps are limited to ScoreGuide, Weather Channel, and messages. You do not need to be internet-connected to use these apps.

Eagle-eyed observers will notice that the Info screen uses the words "Genie Info" instead of "Receiver Info." This may be a mistake, or it's possible that at one time this receiver was intended to be referred to as a Genie.

All resolutions up to 4K are supported including 480i and 480p, which are not supported by DIRECTV's 4K Genie Client. This is to allow customers with older TVs to use this receiver. HDR is also supported on TVs that support HDCP 2.3.

One of the big wins here is that this receiver does not have a built-in screen saver, and the power-saving menu is accessible via remote. This is different from the commercial receivers in the past which sometimes would go into screen saver or power saver mode by themselves and there was no way to take them out of this mode without rebooting the receiver.

This is DIRECTV's fastest receiver yet, with bootup taking about 90 seconds or less, as opposed to up to 5 minutes for the older DIRECTV boxes.

The back panel connections

DSC_3140-1.webp

The big story here is what you get on the back. This is a SWM-only receiver, of course, with a single satellite input. If you are using only H26K receivers, you can fit 15 of them on one leg of a SWM. In a mixed installation with older receivers, you can only fit 13 on each SWM leg because of the limitation of the older receivers.

The typical ports

There's a connection for DIRECTV's standard A/V cables. Typically this will be used in a ZeeVee modulator system to bypass HDCP. The ZeeVee systems put in digital watermarking so HDCP is not required.

There's a port for a dedicated IR target cable, making it easy to mount this behind a TV. There's also optical audio out, which is rarely used but it was a request from enough commercial customers that it was included. The HDMI connection is a standard one, as is the connection for the ubiquitous EPS10 power supply.

Two USB? And Ethernet?

Here's something you'll need to know about the H26K: Coax networking is not supported. In other receivers, the network connection is made by connecting a single DECA to one leg of a SWM and then to a network switch. By taking out coax networking, this receiver is more compatible with the commercial SWM30HP multiswitch. That multiswitch is designed for runs over 250 feet, while coax networking does not work properly with runs over 150 feet.

The two USB ports allow an external DECA to be powered by the receiver while keeping an open port for the dedicated flash drive used for the DIRECTV Residential Experience.

Networking your H26K

Adding a network connection to your receiver improves the speed of searches and enables control by external apps and devices. It's a requirement for matrix-switched systems.

Typically, such systems will have all the receivers in a rack, where they can connect easily to a network switch. In that case, direct wired Ethernet is your best bet. However, if you are networking in a mixed H25/H44/H26K environment or just want to use coax networking, you can use an off-the-shelf DECA to diplex the Ethernet connection into the coax cable. The DECA can be powered by an EPS10 adapter or connected using a MicroUSB cable. The following PDFs show networking options for the H26K.

H26K-Network-Option-1-1

H26K-Network-Option-2

Overall Impressions

When the H25 came out in 2011, it was considered "blazing fast." Times have changed. DIRECTV has a habit of adding additional layers of code onto its receivers, and they get slower as a result. A change to the way that DIRECTV encoded some of its content in 2017 also meant a performance hit for older receivers.

The H26K is faster than any other receiver that we have ever tested at Solid Signal. It's also the smallest standalone receiver that DIRECTV has ever offered and at the time of this review is the newest and most future-proof receiver for any pay television service.
It's sure to be a hit with commercial receivers, and many a residential customer will be wishing for one as well. However, this receiver is only available to customers with a commercial account. This isn't a technical limitation, although residential customers would be more likely to want coax networking. This is purely a choice made by DIRECTV which means that at some time they could make a different choice and make this device available to the hobbyist, RV, and marine communities.

The special features of this H26K Commercial Receiver will appeal to installers and business people who want a great experience. It's the perfect companion to DIRECTV's NFL Sunday Ticket package, which is still available for commercial customers, as well as all its sports packages.

It's just the receiver that DIRECTV's commercial customers have been waiting for! Get yours from Solid Signal!

I don't own a business. I only have a residential account, and that is for my home. And I use only Wi-Fi at home, no Ethernet.

Then I'm not sure what your comment has to do with a commercial-only receiver.

If I buy this commercial receiver and connect it in place of my genie 2, could this work? could I just replace the SIM card?

Access/SIM cards are paired to your receiverID, you can't swap them without making a call to DIRECTV.

And as mentioned in the first looks and reviews, the H26K is ONLY available for commercial accounts, so even if you somehow acquired one, DIRECTV's system won't let them add it to your residential account.

Also, the H26K uses a SIM-sized access card. Your existing card wouldn't fit.

Starz is apparently dropping all of the west coast feeds of their networks tomorrow. FiOS has already dropped most of the ones they carried and I imagine DirecTV would be affected with STZw on 526 and SENw on 536.

Did anyone have a price increase today on their equipment? I own my VIP211k's, and they have been $5.00. My bill that I received last week shows the "add-ons" as being $5.00. However, I just logged into my Dish account, and my "add-ons" are now $10.00. Did the additional receivers go up by $5.00 recently?

As I mentioned, my last bill shows $5.00 and under the notes, nothing is mentioned about a price increase.

Apparently it's not an "owned receiver" fee but rather an extension fee that's applied to 2nd and subsequent viewing. Maybe that played into their decision to force a box at every TV- garnering those fees

Possibly. In theory, $9 of the base pack has a rental fee built in. But now is this $5 a chance to get a little more? I don't know for sure. According to chat, it is a glitch and will be resolved in a timely manner, but we shall see. Part of my thinks there is a going to be a new charge, whether it is now or this fall. Here in Illinois, the law requires we are given 30 days notice of any fee changes, but I have not been given anything.

These fees are why streaming has caught on so well across the country and DISH is losing subs each quarter. Soon won't be enough subs to be profitable.

The cable company I was with years ago did charge $9.99 for a receiver.

Mexico takes on South Africa to open the World Cup Final (it is called the Final... this just isn't the World Cup Final... Final). The tournament has been plagued with rife malfeasance as FIFA has been committing all sorts of fraud with the ticket sales. Hotel rooms have gone unfilled as the prices to attend a game and stay somewhere are through the roof. I swear this is impacting Mansfield, OH hotel rates which are higher than average for the Indycar race. And there is a broadening VAR presence which will ruin things as nothing worse now when scoring a goal and knowing you can't quite celebrate yet as they check to see if a player was offside by a pixel a half-hour ago.

The Group Stage used to mean something, but now 32 of the 48... yeah, 48 teams are going to the Knockout Round. Getting into the Knockout Round used to be a big deal, even for the US. But now... if you don't lose all of your group stage games, you get to move on. Oi! And this is avoiding all the political stuff!

I have never been so unexcited for a World Cup before. Every game used to matter. But FIFA be darned if they don't try to squeeze out every dime they can out of the players, refs, and fans.

Caught up to the 500... err... k in St. Louis. What a race! Andretti Motorsport were doing very well with Ericsson and Kirkwood, meanwhile Power was moving up the grid. Veekay started cautiously. He was working the tires just right, becoming more lethal later in the stint. Rasmussen was racing likewise, not nearly as insane as he has in the past. Palou was leading the race, in a shocker to all. Caio Collet was having a wonderful ride, making Ferucci potentially sweat a bit. Rain came, rain went, rain came, rain went. Generally mild sprinkles, but enough to pause racing on an oval.

Palou would kind of send Siegel into the wall. Siegel really didn't do much wrong. As he noted, you have to turn at some point. Palou had acres of room below and Siegel might have had his ticket out of Indycar stamped. Dixon was doing the fuel thing and got busted twice by yellows, not pitting before the flag came out. Then the most critical happened... Palou ran out of gas on pit lane, effectively giving Newgarden the race lead and win. Newgarden had a very early pit, so he was able to slide in, get service and go. Meanwhile, everyone else was confused and stuck behind Palou for a bit. Once people figured what was happening, Newgarden had a major advantage of several seconds. Newgarden wouldn't look back and when it went green again, he'd hold the lead for the win.

Massive credit to Juncos Hollinger who bested Penske in getting Veekay out before Malukas in a transition that was oddly bizarre. I haven't had time to check, but I'm wondering if Veekay was about to run out of fuel or cut a tire. He was charging late in a stint, got up to fifth, and then tailed back for a few laps to 10th or 11th. It looked like it was over. Went into the pits, and after the pitting sequence was over, Veekay was well inside the top ten again. It was weird. And he charged, getting up to fourth. He made a late move on Rasmussen, but Rasmussen held his position with some great driving. In fact, there was a ton of incredible racing passing, not passing all race long. Veekay would finish 4th. A podium would have been awesome, but it is a great outcome for a guy who hopefully will get a break with a big team. We saw what Veekay could do with a Honda last season with fuel save, imagine replacing Simpson on Ganassi and having speed to go with fuel saving. His 6th at Indy and 4th at St. Louis get him up to 13th in the points standings and only 5 points outside of the top 10.

Ericsson finished second, resigned to finishing behind the current best in the world guy on a short oval. Rasmussen got the final step on the podium, a nice rebound to what has been an otherwise bad year for him, and a good reward to ECR who just extended his contract.

They raced USAC cars at Daytona once. Once! People died. Aj Foyt said 'f this', and left after the first go around. AJ freaking Foyt thought it was crazy! And cars weren't nearly as fast as they are now.

I think they tried Talladega once too.

So...DirecTV advertises the Choice package with 95+ bonus channels for Satellite customers. You don't want 90+ of the 95...

Excluding PPV, premium networks, infomercial, shopping, religion, and non-English programming, there are 7 channels on satellite that are not on streaming:
NFL Network, MavTV, FE TV, Free Speech, NASA, INSP, and Pursuit. I'm pretty sure a couple of those are public interest that they have to carry to meet an FCC quota on satellite.

I hope they get called out for this advertising because that is ridiculous. One big network, NFL, will probably get added to streaming when their next agreement comes up, and the rest are likely very low viewership.

What about streaming, what do you get extra with the Choice package that isn't on Satellite:
Two stations - one of which is an internet TV - Fox Weather, and Heros & Icons (a diginet). Nothing special here to look at either.

If they cleaned up a couple of their agreements, added a few public interest stations to streaming, they could probably have their lineups match. It's close now, if you take out all the garbage on satellite that they earn money on. If they can sell infomercials on satellite, why can't they on streaming, seems like a miss. A bigger miss, including those stations in the "bonus channels just for satellite customers." Pretty sad marketing right there.

1681344805401.png

Attached is a comparison sheet of satellite vs streaming for the three main packages if anyone is interested.

MOD EDIT: See Post #3 for an up to date list of what channels are available on sat but not on streaming/internet, see Post #21 for an up to date list of what's available in the app for streaming customers, but not for sat customers.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
