Is it really possible that Windows 11 came out over two years ago? Yes, it was all the way back in June 2021 that Microsoft started moving us all over to the centered start menu. I wrote about it back then, too. By Microsoft's timeline, that means it's almost time for Windows 12. Yet, just as I did with Windows 11, I have to ask whether anyone is really looking forward to that.

Windows 11 is finally getting good

Windows 11's 23H2 update finally gives us some of the good stuff we've been waiting for. I don't know why it took so long, but you can finally ungroup items on the taskbar much as you could in Windows 10 and earlier versions. For the last three years I've been running an app called Start11 to restore this function. It's not perfect but it does what I need it to do. Finally, I can retire that app and its fairly frequent crashes.

As for the other things in Windows 11 23H2, I'm a little less interested. Microsoft is trying to roll out its Copilot AI across the OS, much as they tried to roll out Cortana and Clippy. I didn't care for those "helpers" either, and I don't expect to care about Copilot. It's just going to be another annoyance that I try to disable.

On the other hand, Microsoft is finally taking steps to address custom lighting in different components. This is a tip of the hat to the gaming community, although a lot of people use stuff with custom lighting now. As it stands today you have to use a different app for every device with custom lighting. There's an app called OpenRGB which works with a lot of stuff but not everything. When fully implemented, you shouldn't even need that.

Will Windows 12 be a step back? You can almost count on it

It's almost a cliche at this point that Microsoft kills productivity with every new Windows release. I remember when Windows95 came out and my CD-ROM drive was instantly unsupported (despite being less than a year old.) Generally speaking, moving to a new OS isn't generally that painful, but there are always issues.

The only thing that makes me feel a little better is that generally speaking, Microsoft has been on an "odd/even" cycle for a while. They come up with an OS that everyone hates, then they backtrack with the next release. The almost universally reviled Windows Vista was succeeded by the much loved Windows 7. Windows 8 was the butt of a lot of jokes, and Windows 10 made it all better. (Note: There was no Windows 9.) Windows 11 pulled back the reins and got rid of a lot of things users liked. Hopefully this means that Windows 12 will be a popular move.

Is it even possible to innovate anymore?

At this point you have to ask yourself if there's even anything left in Windows that you want to change. I'm not saying it's perfect, but today's Windows starts up quickly and largely does what it's supposed to. It accommodates different needs from productivity to gaming and it's not even terribly buggy most of the time. So what's left?

Obviously Microsoft wants to incorporate AI features but I don't think people want that. People want the OS to get out of the way, not be more in your face. Chances are AI is just another feature Microsoft will discontinue in a few years.

Personally I'd like it if Microsoft kept moving toward a unified cloud structure. You can log onto a Chromebook, any Chromebook, and you see your desktop, your apps, and your documents. Microsoft kinda does this but I'd like to see it be a little more comprehensive. Like, if you log into a new computer, it loads all your profile settings, asks you if you want to download apps (assuming they'd need to be on the Windows store) and then just works. Imagine signing onto a new PC with your Microsoft account and not just seeing your documents but launching an app like Outlook with all of your mailbox settings intact.

That would certainly be worth upgrading for. I guess we'll see what Windows 12 brings in the next few months.

Until Windows 11 is no longer a step back from Windows 10, I'm not sure what the point is in looking forward to Windows 12.

I would also remind everyone that at one time, Microsoft's timeline stated that there would never be another major version of Windows after 10.

If Windows 12 happens, I expect that the consumer versions will be riddled with all manner of annoying advertising and promotions (even more than Windows 11).

Over the past few weeks, I have had problems connecting to streaming services (Netflix, HBO et al). When I go to the TV's native Channels, I have no problem. The Dish internet troubleshooter shows I have a good internet connection. I'm wondering whether it's an issue with my internet provider or a problem with the Dish software on the Hopper Plus. Anyone else seeing this?

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

It states the average amount they are under water is OVER $7,000. :eek

Personally, I tend to be the type that drives a vehicle for a lot of years....do my own oil changes and other fluid changes. Just replaced the spark plugs and a couple coils. Youtube is great for things like this.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Lately my eight year old Dell laptop has been shutting off even when I have a full battery. I have had to keep it plugged up all the time to keep this from happening. Any idea what is causing this? I replaced the battery about three years ago.

A recalibration might be needed. Even if it shows full, the individual cells may have become unbalaced. And the BMS chip in the battery reports false information to the pc.
Try this. Start it up in the bios/uefi and leave it there until the battery dies and it shuts off.
It might just keep running longer than in Windows. Or run for a short while and shut off.
If it's the first case. Probably just needs a balancing. If the latter, the pack might just be dead.
Not throwing stones but perhaps just a cheaply constructed battery with substandard cells. Could be.

Patience. Keep restarting it in bios/uefi until it won't fire up anymore.
Then plug the charger in and let it complete a full charge. And see what happens. If it's better.
Do the same thing one more time. Run it until it dies dead-dead. Then just let it charge, pc shut off.
When charged, it might be better. It might not be.

There are bench jigs that read the actual BMS and override it to let a tech manually monitor and charge the separate packs. They can also reset any "time bombs" in it that cause an otherwise good pack to show bad.
Maybe Santa will be good to me some year.

You might just need a new battery. Maybe the PC power management chip is going. A Dell common thing.
Leaving a laptop plugged in with a full battery is known to reduce the life. Asus for one recommends that you don't leave the charger plugged in all of the time even when shut down. And setting Windows to charge the battery to 85% instead of 100% increases life.
That's all I got.

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.

If you can restrict the DHCP address space to assign addresses to one end of the subnet (i.e. x.x.x.50+), you can manually assign the IP address on pretty much any operating system. This is a default behavior on several popular routers. As the Router Mini only supports 235 devices, I expect that's already done.

Another option is to use a router that supports PoE to power the antenna. This article discusses that option (under PoE Power heading):

Now that I've had the v5 kit with the Mini Router, it's not as bad as I first thought. Yes, no DHCP reservations, but you can set up multiple SSIDs that have separate IPv4 subnets, and like the big brother, you can select from 192.168.x.0/24 or 10.x.0.0/16 (where "x" is 1-4).

You can also split a subnet and have different SSIDs for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz channels to handle some IoT devices. I haven't discovered what subnet the 2nd NIC on the router assigns, I'm guessing it's the first subnet.
