You've probably read the story already. Several months ago, Max threatened to take away 4K and Dolby Vision from most customers unless they upgraded to the "ultimate plan" or whatever they call it. If you subscribe to Max, that's another $4 a month. It's a bit of a kick in the teeth to folks who have already seen the service totally gutted in recent months.

This week, Max made good on their promise, sending notices to existing customers saying,

I'm inclined to use profanity here

I do my best to keep this blog free of profanity. Even though the world has largely accepted that you can say most four-letter words in practically any setting, I think that it's just bad writing and I tend not to do it. But Max, you're really testing me here.

I get it, I do. The app was losing boatloads of money. Something had to be done. Raising prices and cutting programming doesn't seem like a really good solution to me, but then what do I know. In fairness, they've temporarily added B/R Sports and CNN live to the Max app for free, but they are already saying that those add-ons will cost money later. That's fine… I haven't used them not even to check them out.

Here's what wasn't clear until today

Until today, it wasn't clear how people who get Max through their TV subscription would be affected. It's crystal clear now.

Here's the simple truth: If you get Max because you subscribe to HBO through DIRECTV, you are going to lose 4K. Period. Your only option if you want 4K on the Max app is to pay full price for it. There's no upgrade where you could just pay the $4 and get the Ultimate plan. It's all or nothing.

This move undercuts every single pay-TV provider, especially those who have had relationships with HBO for decades. It not only cheapens the value of the HBO broadcast services, it creates a situation where people feel like they have to turn off HBO broadcast and move over to Max on streaming.

Here's why I think that's a bad idea

First of all, there's more content on HBO-over-satellite than there is on Max. A lot of the titles that have been stripped from Max are still available on demand from DIRECTV. That alone is a good reason to keep the service.

Second, live TV is really quite good! I actually like scrolling through the guide, finding a program or movie I haven't thought of in a while, and watching it even if I start in the middle. Maybe I'm the last person alive who does this. It's likely the younger people don't. But they're free to live their lives as they see fit. So am I.

But more importantly, the combination of HBO-over-satellite and Max was excellent. Sadly, a lot of HBO's darker shows look really bad on satellite because the 4K version isn't available. Max was a great place to watch things like House of the Dragon and The Last of Us, while the satellite feed was great for things that are actually well-lit like The Gilded Age and Late Night with John Oliver. When you try to watch a show as it premieres on Max, sometimes you don't get great performance. Everyone else is trying to stream it at the same time and things get clogged up. The easy solution: move to satellite.

It's like they hate us. It really seems like they hate us

When you look at some of the biggest streaming services out there: Netflix, Max, Disney+/Hulu, Prime Video, and Paramount+, it's almost like the folks who run them resent regular viewers. I can imagine them sitting in a (probably cigar-smoke-filled) room cackling about how we regular folks had it too good and something has to be done. They seem bound and determined to raise prices and cut services until people have no choice but to find another way to watch what they want.

And you know, I hate to say it but this is patently the wrong time to do this. More and more people today spend time watching things like YouTube and TikTok rather than stuff produced by the studios. The actors' and writers' strikes have meant roughly 6 months with no production at all. That means things are going to look pretty slim on those streaming services for a while.

If I knew that I was facing increased competition from TikTokers, and I knew that I wouldn't even be able to turn out any new content for months and months, the last things I'd be doing would be raising rates and cutting content. But hey, there must be something I'm missing here. Can someone please tell me what it is?

Next step is separating HBO from MAX, pay your provider, get access to HBO only on that provider's service, no more MAX access unless you pay direct.

Then get rid of the $15 tier, have two, with Ads, without Ads(4K), just like the other services.

Easier said than done. HBO has proven to be pretty poor at re-branding.

Perhaps more importantly, they've lost their way as a once "must-have" service.

Did not say it was a good idea, just what they are planning.

All MAX is doing, throwing things at the wall to see what sticks.

If they had said I'd keep 4K as long as I kept my DIRECTV subscription to HBO/Max, I'd have kept it indefinitely. Now, I'll cancel the add on and add Max to the rotation of streaming services that I add for a month and catch up on what I've missed.

HBO/Max lost its way a long time ago.

Over the past few weeks, I have had problems connecting to streaming services (Netflix, HBO et al). When I go to the TV's native Channels, I have no problem. The Dish internet troubleshooter shows I have a good internet connection. I'm wondering whether it's an issue with my internet provider or a problem with the Dish software on the Hopper Plus. Anyone else seeing this?

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

It states the average amount they are under water is OVER $7,000. :eek

Personally, I tend to be the type that drives a vehicle for a lot of years....do my own oil changes and other fluid changes. Just replaced the spark plugs and a couple coils. Youtube is great for things like this.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Lately my eight year old Dell laptop has been shutting off even when I have a full battery. I have had to keep it plugged up all the time to keep this from happening. Any idea what is causing this? I replaced the battery about three years ago.

A recalibration might be needed. Even if it shows full, the individual cells may have become unbalaced. And the BMS chip in the battery reports false information to the pc.
Try this. Start it up in the bios/uefi and leave it there until the battery dies and it shuts off.
It might just keep running longer than in Windows. Or run for a short while and shut off.
If it's the first case. Probably just needs a balancing. If the latter, the pack might just be dead.
Not throwing stones but perhaps just a cheaply constructed battery with substandard cells. Could be.

Patience. Keep restarting it in bios/uefi until it won't fire up anymore.
Then plug the charger in and let it complete a full charge. And see what happens. If it's better.
Do the same thing one more time. Run it until it dies dead-dead. Then just let it charge, pc shut off.
When charged, it might be better. It might not be.

There are bench jigs that read the actual BMS and override it to let a tech manually monitor and charge the separate packs. They can also reset any "time bombs" in it that cause an otherwise good pack to show bad.
Maybe Santa will be good to me some year.

You might just need a new battery. Maybe the PC power management chip is going. A Dell common thing.
Leaving a laptop plugged in with a full battery is known to reduce the life. Asus for one recommends that you don't leave the charger plugged in all of the time even when shut down. And setting Windows to charge the battery to 85% instead of 100% increases life.
That's all I got.

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.
harshness
If you can restrict the DHCP address space to assign addresses to one end of the subnet (i.e. x.x.x.50+), you can manually assign the IP address on pretty much any operating system. This is a default behavior on several popular routers. As the Router Mini only supports 235 devices, I expect that's already done.

Another option is to use a router that supports PoE to power the antenna. This article discusses that option (under PoE Power heading):

Now that I've had the v5 kit with the Mini Router, it's not as bad as I first thought. Yes, no DHCP reservations, but you can set up multiple SSIDs that have separate IPv4 subnets, and like the big brother, you can select from 192.168.x.0/24 or 10.x.0.0/16 (where "x" is 1-4).

You can also split a subnet and have different SSIDs for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz channels to handle some IoT devices. I haven't discovered what subnet the 2nd NIC on the router assigns, I'm guessing it's the first subnet.
