It just may be possible. If you have an old AT&T TV device, also called an Osprey device or C71KW device, you may be able to use it as a Genie client. I had been told that it wasn't possible for regular users to do it, but folks on the DIRECTV Community Forums, DBSTalk, and SatelliteGuys have posted instructions.

What's this all about?

The device at the top is DIRECTV's C71KW. It was originally designed to run the service known as AT&T TV at the time. (That service was later changed to be called DIRECTV for Internet.) The same hardware was then reconfigured to be used for DIRECTV Satellite, with it being called Gemini for Satellite.

The only difference between the streaming and satellite versions of this device are the app that is run when it starts. The box itself runs the Android TV operating system. When you start it up, it runs an app that makes it look like a regular Genie client. If you're using the DIRECTV for Internet service, it runs a different app.

This would all be ok, but some users have reported that after they ordered a DIRECTV Gemini for Satellite, they got the Internet version instead. At that point, we had to process a return and send a new box.

This method seems to work to change an internet box into a satellite one. I'm going to post it just as it appeared on prominent user forums, with no warranty implied. There's one typo which I will change, and I'll note that.

Good evening everyone! After much research and struggle, I've finally been told of a way to get the Gemini C71KW-400 boxes for STREAM use to be used on satellite, perfectly fine. This method was originally told to me by user @Good4U on the DIRECTV Community Forums, so shoutout to him.

  1. FACTORY Reset your Gemini
Internet box by pressing the red reset button for 20 seconds.
  2. When your Gemini with DIRECTV STREAM firmware is finished with this, it will boot up to where you press the 'OK' button followed by "BACKWARDS" and "FORWARD" BUTTONS. During this process, ensure that your Gemini is NOT plugged into ethernet (no internet connectivity at all).
  3. Once you get to the section where you put in your WiFi password, press 2326 on the remote. This should restart your Gemini with DIRECTV STREAM SATELLITE firmware. (Correction made)
  4. Once it is booted back up, follow the same remote pairing procedure as in the beginning of step 2. Then, instead of being greeted with the Internet WiFi settings, you should be brought to 'ADD YOUR GEMINI'.
  5. You have officially converted your DIRECTV STREAM Gemini box to a DIRECTV SATELLITE Gemini receiver.

I am not aware on a way to convert a DIRECTV SATELLITE box to DIRECTV STREAM yet. So, if you follow this method, there is NO TURNING BACK!!

Thank you for reading this. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions below. Good luck!

Does it work?

So far, it hasn't worked for me in limited testing. That said, the Stream hardware I have is very old and the software hasn't been updated in a long time. So it may work for you.

I have to stress that I make no promises that this will work. Hopefully we'll see some comments below from people who did make it work for them.

Can you do this with a Gemini Air?

I really doubt it. I did try this with a current version Gemini Air and it didn't work for me. That's not to say it won't work for you. It would be interesting to see if anyone out there could get it to work with a Gemini Air, since there are a lot of folks who would love to see a Gemini Air for DIRECTV Satellite.

Let's see what happens

Generally, I try to comprehensively test the tutorials I create. I'm posting this up because I think this information is important, even though I've been unable to confirm this. I'm talking with other folks in our Michigan corporate office who will also be working to try to confirm this. In the meantime, I'm interested to see if anyone has been able to do it.

Remember according to the instructions you can't convert a Gemini for Satellite back into a streaming box using this method. It's a one-way street. Don't try this "just to try it" because you won't be able to undo it.

I have to say, this is the great thing about user communities. I've been part of various DIRECTV user communities for over 20 years now and I've found some genuinely helpful people over that time. Yes, I've found quite a few trolls too and some of them are quite harsh in the way they treat people. But most folks are genuinely trying to help.

OK internet community, leave a comment below! Let's see how this works!

Over the past few weeks, I have had problems connecting to streaming services (Netflix, HBO et al). When I go to the TV's native Channels, I have no problem. The Dish internet troubleshooter shows I have a good internet connection. I'm wondering whether it's an issue with my internet provider or a problem with the Dish software on the Hopper Plus. Anyone else seeing this?

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

It states the average amount they are under water is OVER $7,000. :eek

Personally, I tend to be the type that drives a vehicle for a lot of years....do my own oil changes and other fluid changes. Just replaced the spark plugs and a couple coils. Youtube is great for things like this.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Lately my eight year old Dell laptop has been shutting off even when I have a full battery. I have had to keep it plugged up all the time to keep this from happening. Any idea what is causing this? I replaced the battery about three years ago.

A recalibration might be needed. Even if it shows full, the individual cells may have become unbalaced. And the BMS chip in the battery reports false information to the pc.
Try this. Start it up in the bios/uefi and leave it there until the battery dies and it shuts off.
It might just keep running longer than in Windows. Or run for a short while and shut off.
If it's the first case. Probably just needs a balancing. If the latter, the pack might just be dead.
Not throwing stones but perhaps just a cheaply constructed battery with substandard cells. Could be.

Patience. Keep restarting it in bios/uefi until it won't fire up anymore.
Then plug the charger in and let it complete a full charge. And see what happens. If it's better.
Do the same thing one more time. Run it until it dies dead-dead. Then just let it charge, pc shut off.
When charged, it might be better. It might not be.

There are bench jigs that read the actual BMS and override it to let a tech manually monitor and charge the separate packs. They can also reset any "time bombs" in it that cause an otherwise good pack to show bad.
Maybe Santa will be good to me some year.

You might just need a new battery. Maybe the PC power management chip is going. A Dell common thing.
Leaving a laptop plugged in with a full battery is known to reduce the life. Asus for one recommends that you don't leave the charger plugged in all of the time even when shut down. And setting Windows to charge the battery to 85% instead of 100% increases life.
That's all I got.

That was quite enough....I definitely learned something from your post. Thanks

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.

If you can restrict the DHCP address space to assign addresses to one end of the subnet (i.e. x.x.x.50+), you can manually assign the IP address on pretty much any operating system. This is a default behavior on several popular routers. As the Router Mini only supports 235 devices, I expect that's already done.

Another option is to use a router that supports PoE to power the antenna. This article discusses that option (under PoE Power heading):

Now that I've had the v5 kit with the Mini Router, it's not as bad as I first thought. Yes, no DHCP reservations, but you can set up multiple SSIDs that have separate IPv4 subnets, and like the big brother, you can select from 192.168.x.0/24 or 10.x.0.0/16 (where "x" is 1-4).

You can also split a subnet and have different SSIDs for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz channels to handle some IoT devices. I haven't discovered what subnet the 2nd NIC on the router assigns, I'm guessing it's the first subnet.
