Well friends, it's happened. Increases in streaming costs have pushed me over the edge. It seems like every service has raised rates by 15% or more, and it's gotten to the point where I need to prune back. So, I'd like to take a look at some of the more popular ones that I've subscribed to in the past or am subscribing to now. Are they worth it? I'd love to hear your comments on the subject.

Note that I'm giving prices for the top-level, ad-free versions of these services. Why? Because I can tell the difference between HD and 4K, even with streaming's somewhat weak interpretation of 4K. And because commercials stink. Finally, I'm rounding up to the nearest dollar. I don't know why this trend of ending every price in 99¢ is still with us, but I'm not going to pretend something is $5 when it's really $6.

I'm also not considering yearly plans just because not every provider has them and I want to keep them apples-to-apples.

Netflix: $23 a month

Netflix is the granddaddy of them all, but it is definitely not worth that price. Yes, they have The Crown at the moment. That's no longer the kind of appointment television it used to be but if you've gone this far with it you're going to want to finish what you started. It's so rare that Netflix actually has something I want to watch, and yet they are close to being the most expensive service out there.

Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+: $25 a month

You can argue if you want to that these are three separate services. But really, they aren't. It's no secret at all that Disney plans to combine them into one mega app and they aren't likely to lower the price when they do it.

Hulu has a fair number of older shows, but they haven't had a new program I've wanted to watch in about a year. I do like Moonlighting but it's not worth the money.

Disney overall is in freefall, I think we all agree there. Their Star Wars shows have gotten worse even faster than predicted. Most of their Marvel fare is completely missable. And when was the last time Disney actually had a movie you wanted to watch? The last several Disney films have been poor attempts to remake past winners, while Pixar has completely lost the magic touch.

And then there's ESPN+. I never use it. So yes, I could save $5 by going to the Duo Premium instead of the Premium. (I actually did this, but as I said I'm comparing the top tiers here.)

Max: $20 a month

In the last year we've all had a front-row seat to the intentional self-destruction of Warner's streaming app. Call it HBO Max or just Max, whatever you like. The truth is that it's become a wasteland of older content with just a few recent hits to its name.

Max has so much potential. It could be host to every single DC movie for the last 100 years, plus hundreds of culturally relevant movies from the TCM library. Instead it's home to roughly 15,000 episodes of House Hunters. For some reason, they've added live news and sports. I like news and sports but the stuff they have doesn't interest me at all.

Paramount+ with SHOWTIME: $12 a month

This app seems like a genuine deal considering how much the other ones cost. But, take out Star Trek and Yellowstone and you don't have much. I'll give them credit for doing some original programming, but there isn't much I want to watch. With the recent strikes, a lot of that has been going to broadcast anyway.

The app now incorporates Showtime, which is a surprisingly small amount of content but does have the A24 library. There's definitely some value there.

Peacock: $12 a month

I keep going back and forth on Peacock. They have done some good promotional deals in the past but is it worth $12 a month, once you consider that most of their content makes it over to Prime Video a few months later? Probably not. But then again the Olympics are just around the corner and that will probably do … something for them.

Apple TV+: $10 a month

Apple did their level best to give people a good look at their service. For many people, it was free for over two years. Recently they've not only raised prices but also stopped giving it away with new iPhones. The programming can't be found anywhere else and there is a good selection of it, and the price is probably appropriate for what you get.

STARZ: $9 a month

Most people don't think about STARZ when they choose a streaming service. It's a shame because there's a really deep library of content plus a fair number of original series. It's also one of the few major services that still costs under $10 a month. Keep in mind that it wasn't that long ago that pretty much every service was under $10 a month.

MGM+: $6 a month

The service that used to be known as EPIX is still out there. Personally I don't find a lot there that I'm interested in, but there is a reasonably deep library of content. Much of it does make it to Prime Video eventually. That's no surprise since Amazon owns MGM.

Prime Video: Free-ish

You can't really put Prime Video in the same price matrix as the others since you get a lot of services when you subscribe to Prime. You may not choose to use the free music or reading apps or any of the other services, but they are there along with free shipping on practically anything Amazon sells.

Prime Video has tried to up its game with original series. They've mostly failed, and yet they're rolling out a $3 fee next year if you want to keep it commercial free. I'd cancel it on pure principle but I do actually use a lot of the other services you get with Prime.

What would you cancel?

To me, canceling Netflix is a no-brainer. From there I'd go month-to-month with Disney, Max, and Paramount+. The way I've started to do it is to cancel after every show I watch and see how long it takes for me to want to watch something else. By going 2-3 extra weeks on every app without paying, I can cut my costs by 40% and I doubt I'll miss much.

But hey, I want to hear from you. Do you think these prices are fair for what you get? Have you canceled anything recently? Leave a comment below!

I just canceled Paramount Plus, Peacock, Hulu and Disney Plus.

Had my wife sign up for the Black Friday specials and got back Peacock, Hulu and Disney Plus.

If we join Walmart Plus we can get Paramount Plus but honestly we haven't watched it much.

So got all but one back at a fraction of what we're paying before thanks to Black Friday.

I did something very similar. I ended up canceling by NFL+ and ESPN+ subscriptions because the yearly cost is so high now - when I first signed up for ESPN+ it was "ESPN Insider" and during the transition from "ESPN Insider" to "ESPN+", I got access to ESPN+ for 2 years at $79.95. Now it is $109.95 for a single year. I also had Paramount+ through a T-Mobile deal, and I tried Peacock early on. I have canceled them all because the prices are so high now. But this past weekend I did sign up for Peacock for the $1.99 per month Black Friday deal - just long enough for me to make it through NFL season with their exclusive Wild Card game. Plus Peacock does some sitcoms I would watch - like that 70's show, Two and a Half Men, and The Office.

Another week, another way of complaining about streaming prices going up, yet with no acknowledgement about Traditional Providers also going up, for example, DirecTV having 2 increases in 2023, while offering less and less content.

All of streaming mentioned above, in 4K, no commercials, etc
$117 ( without Netflix-$94)
With that, you get the majority of what is on Traditional Live TV plus the streaming exclusives

Now DirecTV
Entertainment Pack with 3 Boxes
with all the above except Netflix
$155 a month ( with HBO, Showtime, Starz, MGM)
just what is on live TV, hardly any 4K, no commercials with DVR
if you add Netflix to that, $178 a month

So a difference of $61 a month

If you want more content, streaming is still the better deal and a lot less expensive.

I would cancel everything that costs more than $12 right off the bat (except for Amazon Prime).

Keep Peacock only if you need their sports offerings or don't have OTA access. Perhaps Paramount+ for the same reason.

Over the past few weeks, I have had problems connecting to streaming services (Netflix, HBO et al). When I go to the TV's native Channels, I have no problem. The Dish internet troubleshooter shows I have a good internet connection. I'm wondering whether it's an issue with my internet provider or a problem with the Dish software on the Hopper Plus. Anyone else seeing this?

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

It states the average amount they are under water is OVER $7,000. :eek

Personally, I tend to be the type that drives a vehicle for a lot of years....do my own oil changes and other fluid changes. Just replaced the spark plugs and a couple coils. Youtube is great for things like this.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Lately my eight year old Dell laptop has been shutting off even when I have a full battery. I have had to keep it plugged up all the time to keep this from happening. Any idea what is causing this? I replaced the battery about three years ago.

A recalibration might be needed. Even if it shows full, the individual cells may have become unbalaced. And the BMS chip in the battery reports false information to the pc.
Try this. Start it up in the bios/uefi and leave it there until the battery dies and it shuts off.
It might just keep running longer than in Windows. Or run for a short while and shut off.
If it's the first case. Probably just needs a balancing. If the latter, the pack might just be dead.
Not throwing stones but perhaps just a cheaply constructed battery with substandard cells. Could be.

Patience. Keep restarting it in bios/uefi until it won't fire up anymore.
Then plug the charger in and let it complete a full charge. And see what happens. If it's better.
Do the same thing one more time. Run it until it dies dead-dead. Then just let it charge, pc shut off.
When charged, it might be better. It might not be.

There are bench jigs that read the actual BMS and override it to let a tech manually monitor and charge the separate packs. They can also reset any "time bombs" in it that cause an otherwise good pack to show bad.
Maybe Santa will be good to me some year.

You might just need a new battery. Maybe the PC power management chip is going. A Dell common thing.
Leaving a laptop plugged in with a full battery is known to reduce the life. Asus for one recommends that you don't leave the charger plugged in all of the time even when shut down. And setting Windows to charge the battery to 85% instead of 100% increases life.
That's all I got.

That was quite enough....I definitely learned something from your post. Thanks

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.
harshness
If you can restrict the DHCP address space to assign addresses to one end of the subnet (i.e. x.x.x.50+), you can manually assign the IP address on pretty much any operating system. This is a default behavior on several popular routers. As the Router Mini only supports 235 devices, I expect that's already done.

Another option is to use a router that supports PoE to power the antenna. This article discusses that option (under PoE Power heading):

Now that I've had the v5 kit with the Mini Router, it's not as bad as I first thought. Yes, no DHCP reservations, but you can set up multiple SSIDs that have separate IPv4 subnets, and like the big brother, you can select from 192.168.x.0/24 or 10.x.0.0/16 (where "x" is 1-4).

You can also split a subnet and have different SSIDs for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz channels to handle some IoT devices. I haven't discovered what subnet the 2nd NIC on the router assigns, I'm guessing it's the first subnet.
