I have a horrible installation story and still need help.

First tech comes out, doesn't have a ladder (or decent shoes to go on the roof after I supply a ladder).

Second tech is better -- comes with a ladder but very reluctantly goes on the roof (had an existing triple dish up there).

Signal strength was 90ish on A and C -- 45ish on B. We thought it might be an alignment issue - it wasn't. He leaves the gear and I'm "activated".

He told me to cut back some trees so I could get my signal -- told me exactly which trees were in the way.

He said I could get a second opinion (because I originally thought it was a hardware issue with the dish and no one wanted to go up there to replace anything (had a spare LNB from the previous owner; brand new). Had a third tech come out for another opinion -- he wouldn't go on the roof either -- confirmed it's the trees and pointed to the same cluster.

I paid $670 to have those trees/limbs removed -- signal strength did not go up. I called DirecTV thinking it must be an LNB problem. They come out again and point to a completely different set of trees. Arg.

I paid $525 and low and behold, I have mid 90s across the board (very happy about that).

So I'm sitting at the TV last night (H10 receiver) and about every five minutes on Starz (520; was watching Miracle -- as in it would be a Miracle if I get DirecTV running correctly), I get a 771 searching for Sat signal.

If I changed channel (+ or - 1), that new channel would come in just fine. If I quickly went back to 520, it would pop up NBC. If I repeated the up/down channel change, it would go back to Starz and I could watch for another ~5 minutes. I could also just sit there and wait for the signal to come back -- but changing the channel gave me something to do. :)

I did not have the phone line connected (read somewhere that DirecTV likes to have that connected). I connected it (don't see why that would matter) and I still had the 771.

I will try to watch again tonight to see if it was a fluke or not.

Before watching channel 520, I watched channel 33 for over an hour without a problem.

Anyone have any thoughts for a newbie on the 771? I have a second non-HD receiver that was showing excellent SAT strength on A, B and C, even when my HD unit was 771'ing. No intermittant drops that I could detect.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm in for over 1K in tree cutting (could have been half if they told me the right set of trees to begin with) and for two HD receivers. I want this to work!

it has to be 10-12 pitch roof. If so I don't blame them one bit.

Any time there is a line of sight issue our techs are not supposed to say which trees are in the way. There has been countless times that this has happened and in your case the customer cutts the trees and it doesn't help. They turn around and try to get there money out of the installers company. Before you spent 1000.00 you should have researched the whole line of sight issue and made your own assumption. It puts the installer in a bad situation because for one you know that the job should not go in because of the trees. You tell the customer that the trees are in the way but they look at you like you are a idiot and they want to know which ones it is. If you tell them that you ain't supposed to say then they get all mad and cuss you out. I always just tell them the azimuth of the satellite on the compass and the elevation of the satellite on the inclinometer and then tell them to make there best judgement as to which trees should be cut down.

Well if you work for the local HSP (in north Alabama) as I once did, then you got told at some point that you were never to tell a customer there was a "tree" or "trees" in the way, you were to say, "there are too many obstructions" and let the customer figure out for themselves what those "obstructions" might or might not be.
S
Sounds to me, there is a cable or connetion problem.

Go to the menu and to the point dish, select one of the working TP and stay a while and see if the signal will drop and go back up. IF so, you has cable problem.

Hey guys,

I've gone the past few days without any hitches. I connected the phone line, hard reset the receiver and went through the SAT setup from scratch.

The roof is a 10 x 12 pitch --- and on top of a 3 story house. So I don't fault the guys for not wanting to go up there.

I didn't mind the fact that I had to shell out cash to cut back trees -- I did mind the fact that I was told by two different installers the wrong set of trees to remove. The final guy (senior tech) came out, was properly attired for roof scaling and gave us the correct information.

I also mind the fact I was activated with a B signal strength of 44%. From speaking to a D* rep, he shouldn't have installed the equipment until that B signal was improved.

As a consumer, I expect the expert to give me good information -- not expect me to use my best judgement (what the heck do I know about this type of technology and margins for accuracy with LOS?). Obviously guys who do this for a living aren't that accurate -- so how could the inexperienced consumer be any better?

If the error comes back, I'll get D* involved instead of doing it myself (hate to do that because I've only had one good tech arrive out of four). Even I don't want to scale that roof (hehehe).

I did buy their protection plan so I guess I should use it.

I would also insist on getting the newer dish installed - those "Sat B upgrades" on the old, wider, 101/119 dishes are fairly notorious.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Didn't see a thread like this so I figured why not start one. This is about natural supplements. If you aren't into supplements, fine, but please let those of us who do want to discuss this discuss it.

The first one I wanted to mention has been a real life changer. I'm 62 and still do all of my own install work at my business....also do all the yard work at the house. A few years ago I started noticing that I was losing my range of movement, it was even getting hard to bend over and lace up my boots. Almost got stuck in an attic because I couldn't get turned around once the work was done. Didn't think much of it and figured with age comes stiffness that was only going to get worse as time went on.
It was then that I stumbled across a video which was discussing rotator cuff tears and why they were to prevalent these days. Turns out, the culprit is a simple deficiency in MANGANESE which is key in keeping your tendons flexible. Most anti-biotics strip your body of any manganese it might have had which is why certain anti-biotics, especially those in the Cipro family. I actually knew a man who had two tendons tear while on that stuff.
Went to Amazon and ordered some manganese. Now it took a while, it wasn't instant, but gradually I have regained all of my flexibility. I can bend over and touch my toes while standing with no pain and putting on my boots is no longer a chore.
Pretty cheap too. The bottle I ordered was a 200 ct for under $13. They said to take double the normal dose for the first month because most people are severely lacking, then go to one a day.

Chia Seeds
Kinda the whole idea is to mention something and explain WHY it is something we might want to add to our daily routine.
This is what I got from google. Looks like I'm going to be adding them, thanks

Key Health Benefits
    • Digestive Health: One ounce (28 grams) of chia seeds provides nearly 10 grams of fiber, which promotes regular bowel movements, feeds beneficial gut bacteria, and helps prevent constipation. [1, 2]
    • Heart and Cardiovascular Support: Rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)—an essential plant-based omega-3 fatty acid—chia seeds can help lower blood pressure, reduce triglycerides, and improve cholesterol profiles. [1, 2, 3]
    • Blood Sugar Regulation: The combination of soluble fiber and protein slows down carbohydrate digestion, preventing sharp blood sugar spikes after meals. [1, 2]
    • Weight Management: When soaked in liquid, chia seeds absorb up to 10 to 12 times their weight in water. The resulting gel expands in the stomach, increasing feelings of fullness and curbing appetite. [1, 2, 3]
    • Bone Strength: They contain high levels of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, which are vital for maintaining bone density. [1, 2, 3]
    • Antioxidant Protection: Compounds like chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid help fight cellular damage from free radicals and reduce chronic inflammation. [1, 2, 3]

I have taken this stuff for years to help my joints. Over 20 yrs ago my shoulder sounded like it had gravel in it when I rotated it. Started taking this and after a few months I had my range of motion back. I mentioned this product to a doctor and told him the results I had and he totally blew it off....said it was just a coincidence. This has no shellfish like most joint supplements.

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.

That's great!

Many people have all sorts of power bricks laying around. Provided the plug fits, and it's the right polarity and same voltage and the same OR higher amps, why not try another one IF the device you want to try it on doesn't seem to work right.

Some people just call them power supplies (which really isn't a good fit in this case), some call them "wall adapters" but it's an external power supply or AC adapter that converts (AC) from a wall outlet into low-voltage (DC) that an electronic device needs to run.

Heres an article from the Akron Beacon ... seeing Six Flags has bought Cedar Point and Kings Island, they are included ...
I said earlier that Cedar Point doesn't use this type of seat restraint ... well, it does use it, But the difference is, the ones up here ALSO have the Over the shoulder restraint as well ... like I was suggesting that they should have used with the Goliath.

One of the new(er) one at Cedar point the Gate Keeper, uses the Clam shell .. I have rode it many times and have Mostly felt secure, that ride will stop you part way on the ride and you just hang, till the ride is ready to continue ... I typically ride the Front Car ... when its getting ready, you ARE hanging, in the car, looking down .... it would require 2 separate restraint systems to unlock at the same time to possibly get out of it.

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Remember when you use to get a 13.5 oz bag of Chips .... Thats a PARTY Size now.

The larger discrepancies are likely from a data or sync issue. Digital tags don't cause the error, but they can spread one bad entry across a whole store or region instantly. The small cent differences are probably just rounding in the weight, the price data, or both.

It's simple math. You take the price and divide by the number of ounces and come up with the price per ounce. I find it hard to believe that Walmart's computers can't carry out simple division.

The division isn't the problem, the inputs are. On the Starbucks pods, $9.22 @ $3.35/oz works out to 2.75 oz, but the box is 1.94 oz. So either the system has the wrong weight on file, or the unit price is left over from an older price of about $6.50 that never got updated. Garbage in, garbage out. Walmart's had unit-pricing data problems before, too - in 2024 they paid $1.64M to settle with New Jersey after inspectors found 2,000+ instances of unit prices using the wrong unit of measure.

So....its intentional. The new fine needs to be a billion $...that would cause someone to fix the issue.

*nit pick* You want cream or more precisely FAT to make ice cream. Milk isn't heavy enough. When making my own, I use half and half.

Wrong unit of measure? Having a hard time believing that or were they conflating solid and fluid ounces (stupid US measuring system).

The first two coffees aren't off on the same amount, so likely the unit price is linked to some previous price. Now I have to *bleeping* double check more math? Does anyone check anything anymore? Bad enough in the professional world having to QA/QC a third party's work. Don't want to have to do that in the grocery store now too! Not with the absurd measures that are used in the US. Is that unit price for blueberries in ounces or pints...

First world problems, but man... argh!!!

You always have the option of moving to a country that uses a unit of measurement that better suits your needs.

Thought this might be a nice diversion, this same guy audited Publix's package weight....yes, I know this is different from the original post on this thread.....and it was accurate.

Love this guy's channel. Looks like Walmart has thrown in the towel when it comes to conventional car batteries.

I bought a new AGM battery from Walmart about a year ago, it is already needing replacing. I thought about just buying a regular battery but from what I've read, that might not be a smart move. Might check my Forscan program and see if I can change the battery type from AGM.
