In my area, the only WiFi service available cost $350 for start up, and it was $39 a month for less than HALF (256Kbps, though same for upload and download speeds) of the speed of DW (Direcway). Anyways, I went with DW cause they offered the $99 down and $99 a month for a year plan. Wildblue don't, it is only $499 and $49 a month @ 512Kbps DL (download) and 128 Kbps (that's Kilo-bits-per-second ) UL (upload). With DW it is 700 Kbps DL and 128Kbps UL, for $59 a month, or $99 for their 99/99 plan, which is what sold me on DW, cause I didn't have $350 (WiFi), $499, or $599 for the setup.
I've done some reading, and it sounds like to me, and IMO the reason why Wildblue is perhaps faster, is because they don't have the customer base, and what speed advantage they might have will slowly disappear.
Then there is the FAP (Fair Access Policy) that both companies have, WB is 2GB per month and DW is around 169MB per 4 hour time slot, and both will reduce your available bandwidth (some say at or below dial-up, don't know for sure on that) for 6-12 hours with DW (yes, apparently it varies) and I have no idea on WB. Both suck, but do the math, you could DL more than 2GB's per month with DW. Although, keeping DL's below 169MB per 4 hours, is a little harder, especially with high speed (at least higher than Dial up ) internet. (FAP I know isn't that simple, but surely you can get more than 2GB per month with DW)
I'd love to have access to DSL, I'm less than a mile from the cut-off that SBC has (entered phone #'s of people that I know that live about 3/4 mile from me, and it is available to them, but when I enter my # it says that I am outside of their service area) The WiFi alternative that I've got available was slower, and it isn't that much cheaper to get setup than DW. Then I don't have the $499 for WildBlue, so the only choice I had/have was DW. I am hopeful that it will be better than dial-up at least.
P.S. Getting installed with DW's basic home plan or the 700Kbps plan on Thursday 12-8-05, hope it works out, and it isn't like the horror stories I've read 
on the net.

Pissed off at the crappy healthcare costs
My health Insurance renewal for 2027 just came in. Going from $827 a month to $1,187 a month. Deductible going up a $1k to $9,350. Max out of pocket also going up $1k to $11,000. Doctor co-pay of $40. Urgent Care co-pay $50. ER 50% coinsurance after deductible. That's all in network. Out of network is double, should it be needed.
Have to think about this. I'm really tempted to just go without now. I only go to the doctor once or twice a year. I pay out of pocket for Tirzepitide and can do without the Rosuvastatin (crestor) now. Really tired of spending over $10k a year and getting nothing out of it.
After years with Blue Cross I switched last year to Ambetter as my Blue Cross premium was going from $1200 to $1800 for a Silver plan and the Bronze plan was still going to be $1300 at BCBS. Ambetter was $827 for the same coverage with a Bronze plan. Didn't think it would jump this much so soon.
I'm guessing a Silver plan is probably over $2,000 a month for 2027.

Such a scam. Healthcare.gov shows me cheaper individual plans available for 2027 from ambetter that ambetter doesn't show on their website. Looked it up. I've spent $68,000 in premiums the last 5 years and got nothing out of it except a few doctors visits and labs.

After having continuing trouble with my eight+ year old Dell Inspiron laptop I am looking to hopefully catch a good deal on new one. My options to buy is Costco and Sam's Club. It seems like a lot of new laptops are 2 in 1 which I do not need. I use the laptop to mainly surf the web and keep up with my finances, money and bills. I would like to have at least a 15" screen and having a touchscreen is a plus. The keyboard would need to lighted also. I don't game any. It would have to be Windows instead of and not Mac. The brands I see the most are Asus, Dell and HP. My two last laptops has been Dell's. Of these brands are there any standouts over the other brands. My budget (hopefully) is $600+-. Also while researching I noticed that do not have ethernet ports.

Currently there is precursory lava flowing into the crater, leading to the next episode that'll probably start within the next day.
You can see the pace of inflation / deflation here. It serves as the primary predictor for when the expect the eruptions, which coincide w/ inflation turning into significant deflation and last for several hours on average with significant fountaining.

Oooo, quite the show now. All three vents have doming and overflows. The cone that built up around the North vent lost its upper quarter at 02:50 Oct 17 and is now spewing lava at a healthy rate. Don't know if I would say it's a fountain, but it's close.

- All eruptive vents and lava flows are confined to Halemaʻumaʻu crater within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Tephra fall from volcanic ash clouds is greatest within 3 miles (5 km) of the vents, lighter ash and Pele's Hair may stay suspended for large distances from the vents.
Kīlauea seems to be returning to the "normal" eruption script, impressive fountaining from the North Vent. For once, the V2 Cam has the best overall shot:
The lava flows have covered a good portion of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor.
