Hope you guys can help me out. It was recently announced in our local newspaper that DirectTV will be offering the local channels for the Rochester, MN market. I went to the directv website and when I use the local channel lookup tool, it indicates that there are no plans to offer locals in my market. Here is where I get really confused. I have sent out 4 emails to Directv asking them about the locals and if I would need to upgrade my equipment. (I only have the equipment that receives the 101 satellite. 2 of my responses from Directv were "We are not going to offer your locals." Another response told me to tune to channel 496 to see if I had a message on my screen and then they made a reference to "checking both channels" The message was very confusing as they told me to tune to 496 but then said check both channels. I emailed them back for clarification, and was met with no reply to my confusion over the previous email, just that they were going to offer my locals in the near future. No one could shed light on whether I need to upgrade my equipment of not. Sorry for the long thread, but I am getting frustrated at Directv's customer service people not seeming to know what is going on.

Does your Fox 47 have poor audio?

Just wondering if any of you who get the Rochester MN locals are having audio problems with Fox 47? Also, my newer receiver shows the correct station details when I press info or look at the guide, but my older receiver upstairs (which I have to tune to the 900's to get locals) gets the Rochester locals, but shows them as Spanish speaking networks.
D
I know someone that had similiar problems with their older receiver and he ended up replacing it with a D10. His would go on for about 5 seconds then drop out. I don't know about 47, I usually watch it off the antenna in HD. I wouldn't be surprised about the dropouts since they were delayed in getting on board.
M
When I talk about audio problems with Fox 47 on Directv, I mean it comes in with a lot of backgroud noise (almost a hiss) contiually. This is not like this on any other station.
D
I tuned to 47 and you are correct it has hiss. The picture looks washed out too. Probably some problem with signal quality. Its not your equipment, its a problem with Fox.
D
This morning the hiss is even on OTA signal.

I'm new to Satelliteguys so let me give my perspective on Shaw TV reception from someone living in S. Indiana (about latitude 38.9). I have 4 800 series receivers (so all signals go through a multiswitch) and a 75 cm dish. I recently bought a signal meter, SATLINK WS-6933, but have been unable to measure a meaningful signal with it as the Quality Signal measures 0. Perhaps it's my meter settings or perhaps the incoming satellite signal is too weak. I believe it's the later. In any case, I typically measure the incoming signal by taking a Shaw box and a TV outside positioned next to the dish. If there are no adverse weather conditions, the typical signal level is 60 to 70 and EcbNo is 6.0 to 6.5. All strong enough to give me a decent picture. Below signal level 60, my picture starts fading in and out. On a bad weather day (rain, thunderstorms (not uncommon here), snow, etc.) the signal level typically drops below 60 thus no TV. My cable run for all TVs is about 100 yards from dish to TV and my signal loss seems to be minimal as I'll get similar readings at the dish and at the TV.

So, with that as background, I have 2 questions:
1. To boost the signal level, I'm considering replacing my dish for a larger dish, say 90 cm or 120 cm. I currently have an LNB, Shaw 75E-G1(T000409), so designed specifically to be used with a 75 cm dish. When I noticed my signal level decreasing, about 1 year ago, I replaced the LNB with a brand new one and saw no improvement in the signal level. Would this LNB still work with a larger dish? If so, are there any special adjustments that I would need to make in order to get it working? I know others have larger dishes, as one of the threads mentions someone in Denver with a 2.4m dish so there must be a way to make it work. Any advice on this would be appreciated.
2. To be sure my WS-6933 meter is set correctly, any advice on how to set all of the settings?

Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance for all input.

Shaw familiar guys can answer better. You say your lnbf is designed for a 75cm dish.
So the feedhorn of the lnbf must be designed to prevent "spillover" to reduce interference from beyond the rim of the dish. If you were to picture the beam angle from the center of the lnbf throat to the dish rim in a V. Your focus is very close to the apex of the angle at the throat.
So. A larger dish won't hurt if it's an offset dish. There are online gain calculators to plug in different dish diameters.
If the larger dish maintains the same or very close beam angle at the lnb focal point, you should be golden.
Things to consider though is if the dish will allow easy mounting of your lnbf. A bracket may be needed.
With that comes you needing to move your lnbf in closer or further away from the dish to attain that focus needed to peak your signal.
Other than that. I always use my receiver and an app that lets me see signal on the receiver from inside of the house.
Can't comment on your signal finder box. But it seems that if the settings on it match what your receiver displays in setup. It should work. Although I do hear that some do have issues with them playing nice.

I feel like this was discussed in another thread, but I can't find it. I have T-Mobile and my last iPhone upgrade was in 2020. I want to get a new iPhone, but what is the best way to go about doing it? Should I order the iPhone from T-Mobile directly, or should I buy from the Apple Store? I feel like there are pros/cons to each option.

If you are looking to get a new iPhone I would wait until September if you can as the new iPhones will be out then.

I am not sure if I will be looking for an iPhone 18 Pro Max or a iPhone Ultra which will be the new foldable iPhone.

Might you regret not waiting for the 18?

Value will be treasured long after cost is forgotten.

Well maybe forget what I said about the iPhone 18. Its looking like it will be released NEXT YEAR.

TheForce

Rumors, not yet confirmed: Advantages of 18 Pro Max over 17 Pro Max

A20 Pro chip on a 2nm process (vs. A19 Pro on 3nm). Expect ~15% better performance, significantly improved power efficiency, better sustained gaming/thermal management .

Variable aperture on the main lens (e.g., f/1.4–2.0 adjustable) for better low-light performance and depth-of-field control

Larger capacity (~5,000–5,200 mAh vs. ~4,800–5,088 mAh on 17 Pro Max

Higher RAM 16GB vs. 12GB)

Some rumors that Apple will not increase the price significantly. So the wait for the 18 over the 17 would typically reduce my 15PM trade-in $490 to $375. Typically, each year the current Pro Max trade in drops ~$100 when the new phone is announced in September.

I was surprised to see that the Trade-in on my iPhone 13 actually increased by the time I got around to replacing it with the iPhone 17. I got $195 when I traded it in at the Apple Store (not a requirement, we are fortunate to have one of the two Indiana Apple Stores near by. Thank you, Notre Dame!) as opposed to $160 when the iPhone 17 was released. Around Christmas, it had increased to $180. I can't remember when that had ever happened before, but who am I to argue with Apple?
Foxbat
I saw that Tim Cook is quoted as saying that the next iPhones will have higher prices due to the increase in RAM costs. So it might make sense to buy now at the price you know versus waiting for the next iPhone with a $100-300 higher starting price tag. There's also the Siri requirement for 12 GB of RAM internally to support on-phone A.I.

If you believe the recent story in the Wall Street Journal, the prices are likely to take a pretty good hop on the new models due to RAM costs. As a possible result, Apple's per-unit profit may be reduced to only 43%.

The follow-on stories from other agencies are speculating that Apple will try to hold the line and shift RAM costs to other gear (like high-end notebooks), but it isn't a happy day when the cost of a bar phone exceeds $1,800.

My Joey 4 is installed on a bedroom tv.

The diamond buttons had been reset.

I thought this was unusual.

I had to reprogram the double diamond button for PIP which I watch.

No problem.

PIP feature on the Joey 4 had been used to watch two channels at once which I thought was the limitation being only two channels vs.Hopper 3's multi-view four channels.

This time when I selected the PIP feature I noticed an option for Multi-View?

Could this be?

Yes it could.

This software update does this.

Multi-view PIP (4 channels) Is Now Available on Joey 4.

This is freaking awesome and very surprising!!!

Very wonderful for me.

Received this e-mail 3 days ago... At the bottom, it says limited to one Multi-view session per household. How does it work if someone had Hopper 3, Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus, Wired Joey 4 and a Wireless Joey 4 for example? Can they all do Multi-view session at the same time?

I tried out multi-view on my Hopper 3, Joey 4, and Wireless Joey 4 at the same time. H3 multi-view works good but not the Joeys. Only one Joey works at a time (see pic). Also, the Joey's multi-view is not working this morning. It starts out multi-view but then goes out of multi-view mode. It worked yesterday. Did not test my Hopper 3 Plus. Wife is using it again.

The Multi View does seem to be limited to one set.
I was testing on one of our 4 joey's and I got a message that using it would stop the session on one of my other Joeys.

I like the feature, but from a practical standpoint, I would mostly use it on the 85" and 75" sets, not the 55" and 50" sets for the most part.

My 85" is on the Hopper 3, so usually my only other use would be for my 75" set in the man cave.

4k joey does 4k with out HDR. The Joey 4 does 4k with HDR. They need to eliminate the 4k joeys and replace them with the Joey 4s.

I just tried out multi-view in my Hopper 3 Plus. I think Multi-view is broke for me. It starts out multi-view then it immediately converts back to single view. Also, only one device can use multi-view. Either the Hopper or Joey.

I'm gonna get a new set next month. I love MULTI-VIEW and need a little more screen real estate for the 4 squares. Do you feel the 85" is the sweet spot in terms of size, or a 100", which might be overkill and dominate any great room?

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Far too early to say as the merger hasn't even been rubber-stamped yet. That said, given how long it has taken Disney to merge Hulu into Disney+ and what a cluster it was when Zaslav merged HBO and Discovery, you'd think they would be deliberate in whatever steps they take. If Paramount aren't careful, Netflix and Apple will eat their lunch when it comes to premium content audience share.

I'm still experimenting with OTA antennas at my new apartment. The mudflap works OK, but we had a dust/wind/rain storm the other day and it all but blew it away. I moved it indoors where the antenna is safer but the signals are marginal.

I bought a traditional Yagi antenna from Amazon and it seems to work more consistently, plus it's meant for outdoors where the mudflap is not.

Anyway, I've had success using umbrella bases paired with a fence post for satellite dishes, and I figured that could work for this as well. I'm just not sure where or what to get and what size pole for this application.

Go to Home Depot and buy a length of "Top Rail" used in making chain link fences. I used a 10' section to mount my Winegard which is probably 4X the size of the yagi you bought from Amazon. It's been up for 15+ years of NM springtime winds and storms with no issues. They make 2 sizes. 1 3/8" and 1 5/8" diameter. Do you have a balcony railing you can clamp to?

BTW does that antenna do VHF HI or is it just UHF?

Yeah, I guess so. I've never tried that though. I'd be concerned with UV deterioration from the NM sun. Some PVC may be UV resistant. I just don't know.
I would be concerned with the heat and its effect on bending of the PVC. I would think at the 1-1/2" O.D. even Schedule 80 wouldn't be stiff enough to prevent movement in a strong wind. It might be too much movement and deteriorate ATSC reception if it's much more than 4' long.

What is the stuff installers use to seal the area around coax point of entry? The Comcast guy used it to seal his RG6 run for broadband. I want to do that for my antenna line..

For what it's worth, I've been using a piece of 1-1/4 white PVC well pipe to mount a 90cm dish to a 4x4 post as a temporary mount. Almost 9 years later it's still there and has not degraded in the sun (CT sun might not be as harsh as in NM, but still, that thing is in the sun for most of the day)
