For the last three years, consumer electronics makers, computer companies and Hollywood studios have been choosing sides in the battle over the dominant format for the coming high-definition DVDs--Blu-ray vs. HD DVD.

Yet after all the jockeying by these companies, it may be the relatively low-priced video game consoles that tip the balance toward one format--or prolong the stalemate for several more years. That's because the new game machines from Sony and Microsoft will play high-definition DVDs and may spur discs sales far faster than stand-alone players.

Sony said in 2004 that its PlayStation 3, due out this spring, would play Blu-ray discs. Not to be outdone, Microsoft, at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week, said that it would make an external drive to play HD DVD discs on its Xbox 360, which went on sale in November.

Both the Blu-ray group, led by Sony, Panasonic, Dell and most of the big movie studios, and the HD DVD camp, which includes Toshiba, Microsoft, Intel and three studios, are starting to release stand-alone players that cost as much as $1,800. But Sony and Microsoft are expected to sell millions of cheaper game machines well ahead of sales of stand-alone DVD players.

The view among industry analysts has been that the HD DVD group would ultimately lose to the Blu-ray group, which includes more electronics manufacturers, more studios and Sony's game machine.

But if enough Xbox 360 users started watching HD DVD movies on those machines, Disney, Fox and other studios that have committed to making only Blu-ray discs might be persuaded to make movies in the HD DVD format, too. This shift could delay any resolution to the format showdown.

Perhaps unintentionally, the movie studios, which want one standard, may have hardened the standoff. In October, Warner and Paramount, two companies that had exclusively supported HD DVD, decided to make DVD's in the Blu-ray format as well.

This gave the Blu-ray group an edge, with commitments from nearly every studio. On the other side, just one major studio--Universal--said it would provide movies in the HD DVD format only. Blu-ray's newfound advantage prompted Microsoft to beef up the Xbox 360 so that it could play HD DVD movies. Microsoft did not want PlayStation to have an advantage, according to an executive who has followed the rivalry.

"The movie studios' strategy of trying to unify the format around Blu-ray as the de facto standard backfired," said Warren Lieberfarb, who was a leading Hollywood advocate of DVD in the early '90s and is an adviser to the digital media division of Toshiba.

Microsoft now expects to ship up to 5.5 million Xbox 360s by the end of June, though it has not said when it would release its HD DVD player. Sony's PlayStation 3 will not be on the market until this spring, but Kaz Hirai, the chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said PlayStation 3's DVD player would be built into the unit, while the Xbox 360's high-definition player would be an attachment and an added purchase.

"Traditionally in the video game sector, consumers are not willing to pay additional money for add-ons," he said. "People expect plug-and-play right out of the box."

Hirai declined to say how much the new PlayStation would cost, though he said the machine would play both high-definition movies and HD games. Microsoft has not said whether the Xbox 360's HD DVD player will play more than movies.

Bob Chapek, the president of Buena Vista Home Entertainment, a division of Disney, said his company had no intention of providing movies in the HD DVD format because it would not help resolve the format fight.

"While typically we're format agnostic, we don't want to do anything that prolongs a format war," he said.

But Disney, Fox and others now in the Blu-ray camp may soften their stance if Xbox and Toshiba's low-cost HD DVD players sell well, industry analysts say.

"The studios are going as fast as they can into as many formats as possible," said Mark Stahlman, an analyst at Caris & Co., an investment bank. "A year from now, when all these movies are out in both formats, no studio will be exclusive, with the exception of Sony, and we'll be saying, 'what format war?'"

Anything said right now is to be taken with a grain of salt, especially by sony. If people didn't buy add-on's you wouldn't have sony selling eye toys and dance dance pads and memory card and...list goes on forever...sony makes millions of add-ons, those hypocrites...

and I guess people enjoy buying their 3rd playstation because the first two wore out...god I really hate when sony talks...just make games and shut up...
timmac
I agree my friend. This is going to be interesting. So, according to them, I guess all Playstation 3 units will have the HD DVD player. So, how much is this unit going to cost? Or will they be offering 2 versions of the PS3 and allow you to buy the add-on? Come on Sony, I like your stuff but get off your high horse and just make stuff.
Purogamer
Sony = Blu Ray, not HD-DVD...PS3 will cost no less than 500 bucks, and I think that's either going to stretch it or sony is going to take MASSIVE losses next fiscal year. Though, they use the absolute cheapest quality so it might not be so bad for them. They make a lot of money when someone buys their second console...

BTW, Microsoft said if Blu-Ray somehow emerges as the winner of the format war, they'd ship a blu-ray drive the same way they intend to ship an HD-DVD drive...

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Continuing the Kilauea thread in the Pub here. Perhaps the Iceland one too next time there's remarkable activity.

Currently there is precursory lava flowing into the crater, leading to the next episode that'll probably start within the next day.

You can see the pace of inflation / deflation here. It serves as the primary predictor for when the expect the eruptions, which coincide w/ inflation turning into significant deflation and last for several hours on average with significant fountaining.

Wife and I like the AfarTV feeds, for the discussion along w/ them, though they're otherwise just mirrors of the official USGS feeds.

Oooo, quite the show now. All three vents have doming and overflows. The cone that built up around the North vent lost its upper quarter at 02:50 Oct 17 and is now spewing lava at a healthy rate. Don't know if I would say it's a fountain, but it's close.

edit: The USGS has called the official start of Episode 55 as starting at 03:19 HST Oct 17, 2026:

Alert Level: WATCH, Color Code: ORANGE 2026-10-17 13:43:56 UTC
HVO/USGS Volcanic Activity Notice

Volcano: Kilauea (VNUM #332010)

Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Issued: Saturday, October 17, 2026, 3:43 AM HST
Source: Hawaiian Volcano Observatory
Notice Number: 2026/H488
Location: N 19 deg 25 min W 155 deg 17 min
Elevation: 4091 ft (1247 m)
Area: Hawaii

Summary: Episode 55 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began at 3:19 AM HST on October 17, 2026.

Volcanic Activity:
Episode 55 of lava fountaining in Halemaʻumaʻu began at the summit of Kīlauea began at 3:19 AM HST on October 17, 2026.

Fountain heights are relatively low at about 100-150 feet (30-45 m), and it is not clear whether this episode will evolve to the same heights as previous episodes. Continuous overflows from the vents began yesterday, October 16, just before 6 a.m. HST and transitioned into episode 55 fountains at 3:19 a.m. HST this morning. The current forecast is for winds are blowing from the north-northeast direction, which suggests that volcanic gas emissions and volcanic material may be distributed to the south-southwest direction from Halemaʻumaʻu.
  • All eruptive vents and lava flows are confined to Halemaʻumaʻu crater within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Tephra fall from volcanic ash clouds is greatest within 3 miles (5 km) of the vents, lighter ash and Pele's Hair may stay suspended for large distances from the vents.
Foxbat
Kīlauea seems to be returning to the "normal" eruption script, impressive fountaining from the North Vent. For once, the V2 Cam has the best overall shot:
IMG_1535.webp
The lava flows have covered a good portion of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor.

Simple, charming. Entire premise is quite silly but Cary Grant carries it across the line in good fashion.

Since it was already "paid" for, I spent the two hours of my time watching the John Cena action movie on Apple TV, "Matchbox The Movie" even though the reviews were brutal. It was better than I expected, so I didn't feel like I had wasted an afternoon watching it. But it felt like another "Reacher"/"Neghley"/"Mission: Impossible"/"Fast & Furious" crash and blow stuff up with lots of automatic gunfire mixed in movie featuring covert CIA operatives.

I don't think we'll get a follow-up movie from this. I expect Mattel will have other toy lines to exploit.

Swaggerty's isn't too bad, sausage prices are lower per lb than making my own from pork butts right now so I've been buying JC Potter or Owen lately.
(Swaggerty's at Sam's is pre cut, I usually partially freeze the rolls and cut with my slicer and vacuum seal on parchment paper)

No. Bring in someone new.🤔 Tony is not serious enough for me. Parker is too close to the team and Tim is too young to take over IMO.

I don't think Tim and Tony are that far apart in Age ...

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.

I'm curious how they are going to implement Tony into Origins (If they do) ...
Tony was introduced to Gibbs and the team, on NCIS, which makes it the Mothership side of things, he worked in Baltimore prior to NCIS, NO mention when they met that anyone had known one another ...
