PS3 Pricing in Europe? WOW!!!

A number of French consumer sites are reporting new comments from George Fornay, president of Sony Computer Entertainment France and vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, regarding the pricing of the PlayStation 3 in Europe.

The comments were made on French radio station Europe 1, and indicated that the PlayStation 3 will be available for "around €500 [$613], in the range of €499 to 599 [$612 to $734]".

I took a long absence from gaming and just this year got back in so I bought the 360 and doing some spot PC gaming again. I really bought the 360 to do Media Center DVR stuff as an extender. For me the gaming was a bonus. Interested to see what Sony could offer me. It might be the BluRay that has me get the unit. Funny how that might happen.

I have to admit the DVD playing is so much better on Xbox 360 then the Toshiba HD DVD I just bought. As soon as an HD DVD USB comes along for the 360, that Toshiba is going on ebay. I still have to get an HD DVD title (ones I ordered werent released on time and Netflix is slow boating titles to me). Picture quality will be good I am sure but that Toshiba is one slow clunky mother. And the component restrictions are mind numbing. I wouldnt use that unit for anything other then HD DVD viewing. Cant imagine gaming or internet features on that thing.

I will admit I'm not as into console gaming as much as I was years ago. I have a PS2 that I play occasionally. Is the console market generally more focused on adult gamers instead of kids these days? Seems that while the Xbox 360 was high at even the low-end $299 machine, that Sony is insane marketing a gaming machine at over $500...if the intended target is kids. I can't imagine a lot of parents laying out $500+ for a game system for their kids, regardless of how many amazing things it offers.

Ouch. WHat an illusion...

1. FYI: every single PC game is "HD" FOR YEARS NOW. The fact that consoles finally will follow PCs has almost zero information.

2. Classy product? It's the original release date tthey were lying for us even just two months ago and so far Sony still couldn't produce a prototype and most likely this E3 will pass without one again. Nothing, nada, nil.

3. Blu-Ray? FYI: Blu-Ray will come around $800-100 when it will be finally out. Do you really think Sony will take hundreds of extra loss per PS3 for BD when rest of PS3 already mean $2-300 loss per unit?
Forget it. Sony will release another, higher priced unit with Blu-Ray, for the time being, until BD prices will come down.

That is not the case for the Xbox360. So if the PS3 sells for $499 how will it stack up against the Xbox360?

The Xbox360 with the hard drive is $399. They are coming out with a HD-DVD drive that is $100. Lets see, that equates to $499 WITHOUT the HDMI output! So how is the Xbox360 gonna beat the socks off of SONY?

1. PS3 will come without hard drive. So let's be real: that's Sony is realistically $599, most likely without BD drive.

2. Because X360 is out already, by the time it will be 1 year old, plenty of games, a proven system, let alone MS most likely will price it down by then.

How will the Sony PS3 survive the Xbox360?

Sony is not stupid. They make quality products and they do not have to sell cheap. They put quality parts together and as anyone knows -- Sony products last a long time. That is not to say they have not made products with flaws. But they have made products that people wanted and worked the way that they are supposed to.

My experiance with computer graphics tells me that Nvidia has for the last three years smacked ATI around. ATI products are power grabbing, noise making, heat creating products that barely can reach the capabilities of same generation Nvidia products.

You are strikingly misinformed about the whole PC graphics, pal.

ATI has been beating Nvidia in terms of performance ever since the release of the now famoous R300 chip, up until last year - now Nvidia is pretty much neck to neck, although once again ATI has the technological lead.

Are you sure you didn't confuse the company names?

Is this why some early Xbox360s are overheating? Also some games on the Xbox360 are 480p games and upconverted to 720p or 1080i. All PS3 games will be a minimum of 720p or higher. How is the PS3 gonna beat the Xbox360?

Sorry but now it's pretty obvious you barely understand the basics of game graphics, console or PC, doesn't matter.

I see the Xbox360 as the poor man's next gen player with the PS3 player fully functioning next gen player. And might I remind most of you that the PS2 was for the most part the masses introduction into the world of movie DVD players. I believe that the PS3 will be the masses introduction into the world of HD DVD players by way of the Blu-Ray drive. Only time will tell. Let's see -- what was the question -- oh yeah -- How is the PS3 gonna survive against the Xbox360 -- and can it be number one again? Only time will tell but I would not be betting against Sony. Their track record is too good.

As a side note, the Xbox360 is very nice and I like some of the games and would own one but not at the expense of not being able to purchase a PS3. I like the games on the Sony system better and I am an advocate for the Blu-Ray drive system. I own a HD set and I want the best HD gaming system for it. Right now on specs that system is the PS3. Out of the box the PS3 will have a Blu-Ray drive, HDMI outputs, full HD-Dolby and HD-DTS audio support, hard drive and only comes with wireless controllers! There will probably not be a scaled down system -- what would they leave out? Maybe in two or three years when there is something I really want to play on the Xbox360 I will buy one. For now I am saving my money for the PS3 -- no matter the cost. It is either that or I shell out more bucks for a decent Blu-Ray HD DVD player that I can't play games on. I have a HD set and I want to watch movies in HD and not HD-Lite like what we get from cable and satellite. My money is on the PS3 being a hugh winner this Xmas.

Absolutely. I've noticed that most Sony fans atucally believe this BD story - this is ridiculous. By November a standalone HD-DVD will be around $350, why would anybody buy a PS3 for $100-200 more? Gamers, funny Blu-Ray zealots - yes. Everybody else - no way.

Games wise you can't compare PS3 to Xbox360...the games in the PS3 will be more appealing(especially to the Japanese and European markets...even here in NA more PS3s will be sold than Xbox360s i believe).

Yeah, even sony fanboys admit they make junk hardware at the very least...

And I believe sony has stated that it WILL ship the ps3 with the hard drive included. They're kinda dumb sometimes but they can see how the 360 "core" bombed miserably and just pissed people off.

The only problem i'm going to have with paying sony's ransom is knowing the damn thing won't last until the ps4 is out, which it's supposed to. Remember when you played your Atari until you bought an NES? Played your NES until you got your SNES, etc...That's how it's supposed to be...

I 100% believe sony only lowered the ps2 price because when they drop the bomb on ps3's price, it will scare people into sticking with ps2 for another year. This will help move some of the old ps2 stock off the shelves.

Updated to H713 on a Hopper 3 from H712 with Hopper Plus a few hours earlier.

It brought a old problem back:

One of the problems I am seeing is that the Available Joey Software section no longer is showing the Android TV versions even after a manual software reset twice and the nightly reboot. Until it does, nether Technician Android TV download and Hopper Plus is able to check, download and update the Android TV software.

This was a major problem with H703.

H710 removed that dependency but it's broken again.

Yep. Just got a call from a customer who said her DVR buttons stopped working. Told her about the new software and had her reboot her H3, problem solved.

i can still see my joey software version with H713.. i am starting to think it's time to get rid of the hopper plus. i just have 2 joey 4's and the hopper 3 with no issues. it seem like the people that have the hopper plus have issues!!!

Are you talking about the Available Joey Software section which goes something like this:
Available Joey W153 W209 J613 J713 J813 K113 J913

in H713 in diagnostics which is directly below the "Switch" section which is what I am referring to that should have a number starting with P which is needed for the
Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4
or the top area where it shows what the current version of the software is for the Hopper 3?

Seeing what your Joey 4/Wireless Joey 4 software version just tells you what is the current software version already installed, until the P version(s) shows up in "Available Joey Software" section which is different for the Hopper Plus, Joey 4, Wireless Joey 4 and it will only list one for the device(s) that exist in one's own configuration which lists what's the latest available, those devices will not be able to check or update their software as it will say "Failed: No Tgt" while "Download ATV Files" in TECHNICIAN SETTINGS under tools will respond with:
"Download ATV Files 3000
This device is not currently targeted for
Android software"
as both are dependent on the P version being listed in the "Available Joey Software" section. It usually takes a few minutes before it shows up. I know with H710-H712, it was not shown and the Download ATV Files worked except since H710, even if you selected everything shown which for me would be the Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4 versions, the first download will as a end result only download the Hopper Plus's versions even though it shows all three as downloaded based on what Available Joey Software shows which is always two P numbers P153 and P15317. After the first successful download, the next download will actually download all three and Available Joey Software will reflect that. In H708 (H709 was skipped as no one mentioned it on the forums) and earlier, it always downloaded everything selected and would show 6 P versions in the Available Joey Software area. The Available Joey Software section is how I tell if there is a newer software available for the Hopper Plus and when I see that, I do the Download ATV files first which is where I get my information to post in my other thread, "Latest available software version for Android TV devices - Hopper Plus, Joey 4, Wireless Joey 4". The Download ATV files does not do any install or update the Hopper Plus as I still need to manually hit Menu, Settings, Device Preferences, About, Software Update to update the software.

So with any new Hopper 3 software update, the first things I will check is the Notifications in Settings to see if any of the settings were reset. For the "Remote Control Mode Reminder" setting, I would try it with off, exit notifications then hit TV on the side of the remote to make sure it does not show the reminder before going to notifications andputting it back to on, exit to see if it works correctly before going back to notifications for the other settings. Then I would look at Available Joey Software and regardless if the 2 P versions, one appears to be the 3 digit major version number and the other is the full 5 digit number which is the 3 digit major version number with 2 more digits, exists or not. Attempt to do the Download ATV Software for all 3 Android TV devices Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4 until all of them is downloaded and shown in Available Joey Software which should be a total of 6 things added. If Download ATV Software has the no target like since H713, I will wait until I see a P version before I do it.

Within the last few hours as I did check earlier today when it was still missing, the Available Joey Software line now has added "P154 P15403" which is for the Hopper Plus that I have but my Hopper Plus software is still on P15317, I will do a Download Android TV (ATV) Software for the Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey which are all Android TV devices and then manually do a check update on the Hopper Plus to update the software shortly.

This happened to me. I was outside mowing and my wife came out and said that our nieces and nephews were going to be on the Noon News. She had it on in the bedroom on our Joey3. Since they weren't on yet, I decided to turn it on in the Living Room on our Hopper3. When I selected the channel (through Dish, not OTA) the Joey3 turned itself off. When I went back to the bedroom to turn it back on, the Hopper3 did a reboot. Luckily it all finished before their story came on, but I just found it strange.

Volcanic Eruptions

Continuing the Kilauea thread in the Pub here. Perhaps the Iceland one too next time there's remarkable activity.

Currently there is precursory lava flowing into the crater, leading to the next episode that'll probably start within the next day.

You can see the pace of inflation / deflation here. It serves as the primary predictor for when the expect the eruptions, which coincide w/ inflation turning into significant deflation and last for several hours on average with significant fountaining.

Oooo, quite the show now. All three vents have doming and overflows. The cone that built up around the North vent lost its upper quarter at 02:50 Oct 17 and is now spewing lava at a healthy rate. Don't know if I would say it's a fountain, but it's close.

Fountain heights are relatively low at about 100-150 feet (30-45 m), and it is not clear whether this episode will evolve to the same heights as previous episodes. Continuous overflows from the vents began yesterday, October 16, just before 6 a.m. HST and transitioned into episode 55 fountains at 3:19 a.m. HST this morning. The current forecast is for winds are blowing from the north-northeast direction, which suggests that volcanic gas emissions and volcanic material may be distributed to the south-southwest direction from Halemaʻumaʻu.
  • All eruptive vents and lava flows are confined to Halemaʻumaʻu crater within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Tephra fall from volcanic ash clouds is greatest within 3 miles (5 km) of the vents, lighter ash and Pele's Hair may stay suspended for large distances from the vents.

Since it was already "paid" for, I spent the two hours of my time watching the John Cena action movie on Apple TV, "Matchbox The Movie" even though the reviews were brutal. It was better than I expected, so I didn't feel like I had wasted an afternoon watching it. But it felt like another "Reacher"/"Neghley"/"Mission: Impossible"/"Fast & Furious" crash and blow stuff up with lots of automatic gunfire mixed in movie featuring covert CIA operatives.

I will look, but I don't think I have seen it. Owen's breakfast sausage use to be favorite, but I can't find it anymore. Jimmy Dean's country mild is OK also when I can find it.

Swaggerty's isn't too bad, sausage prices are lower per lb than making my own from pork butts right now so I've been buying JC Potter or Owen lately.
(Swaggerty's at Sam's is pre cut, I usually partially freeze the rolls and cut with my slicer and vacuum seal on parchment paper)

owens on amazon is 54.99 for a 4 pk 16 oz a sausage. i feel that's kind of steep!!!

They run Owens at $3.99 for lb and $7.99 a couple times a month at some grocery stores here, I actually was wrong, just checked a pork sirloin roast it was $1.99 a lb. (cooked it yesterday so pack was in trash)
