I came home today to no signal.. (at all) Turns out my DiSEqC switch died. all 4 ports, dead to the world. The back of the case was slightly dented, letting moisture inside and corroding all the internal stuff.

The dent pulled the seal away slightly so the water could get in. The switch is in the dark, so it never got any sun to cook the water back out.

I use a box the came with a used primestar dish I was givin. It was hooked to side of the house, ground and all. Has about 8 points of entry for wires at the bottom and screw holes inside for at least 2 4-way switches

I think it is a poor design. It should be filled with potting. I was handling
mine when I grabbed it to tighten the cable the plate dented and I think it
shorted out. Either potting or the edge needs to be soldered....DC

I am going to "deback" one of the spares I ordered today and fill it with 2 part epoxy.

I don't think it'll affect it's signal handling capabilities much.

SatAdam,

Once again, I hope that I don't offend by stating that this might not be for the best (if you don't have extra switches). Don't get me wrong - I'm all for experimentation and for finding things out, but I think that there might be a good chance that you'll detune your brand new switch. However if you have a couple and don't mind loosing one, I'd say go for it. As for what I'm going to say, I checked with a forum member whom I greatly respect, just to make certain that what I said was on track.

At microwave frequencies (and probably others) just about everything acts as tuning...the distance of the cover, the proximity of the case, the thickness of the circuit board, etc. I've seen amplifier circuits that were actually tuned by using thin solder spikes on the RF traces. Even the angle of the spike would change the signal characteristics.

A much better explanation was given to me in these words:

"...The traces between the ports on the circuit board inside a DiSEqC switch are meant to have the same characteristic impedance as the coax cable they connect to (RG-6, RG59 = 75ohms). The traces are printed with a specific width which is related to the thickness (distance to ground plane on bottom) and type of material of the circuit board. An assumption is made is that the top of the board is exposed to air which has different characteristics (the most important being dielectric constant) than compounds like epoxy.

If you pot the circuit board with something like epoxy you will change the dielectric constant that the trace "sees" and then it won't be a 75 ohm trace anymore.

The net effect will be some overall signal loss as well as possible frequency specific losses due to impedance mismatches."

I was thinking that the circuit would be totally detuned, but that was probably a little extreme:
"....In reality the whole consumer level satellite/cable TV setup using cheap cable, cheap F connectors, and cheap parts is a real RF mess anyway, kind of like a leaky hose, and so you may not notice unless your signals are marginal to start with - possibly weak transponders will suffer. "

I'd like anyone who might be thinking of doing this to keep this in mind. Make certain that you have a backup just in case. I'd also be interested in hearing how the experiment goes. Maybe I'll be proven wrong. :)

Just one other thought. Condensation occurs from warm humid air coming in contact with cooler surroundings. My suggestion (for what it's worth) would be to keep the switch enclosed in a light colored (white?) box with adequate airflow to limit sudden temperature extremes.

Please forgive the length of this post.
D
Yikes!

Epoxy and microwaves don't go well together. Past 0.5-1 GHz, Teflon, Ceramic and Rodgers (corp.) microwave substrates are used because epoxy gets too lossy. It has a dielectric constant of ~4.5, compare to air at 1.0003; this means all capacitances increase by 4.5 X if you totally fill the box.

Potting the switch in epoxy will therefore increase mismatch and through losses, and reduce port-port isolation. How much I'm not sure, but I think it will be noticeable.

Fortunately you're only switching 2 GHz, not 12 GHz. If it was 12 GHz, you would probably lose a lot of signal!

I agree that the weak transponders are likely to suffer the most. A line amp on the LNB side of the switch might mitigate the effect, provided it doesn't saturate with a strong signal. Better still, solder it shut and pot it on the OUTSIDE of the box (of course leave the connectors exposed!)

Luckily my DTV stream package doesn't have a rsn fee. Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.

Greenville-New Bern is $11.99 for MASN (Orioles) and Nationals
Raleigh is $11.99 for MASN and Nationals
Charlotte is $12.99 for BravesVision, MASN, Nationals and Reds

The fee in NC also includes the higher in state rate they have to pay for ACCN. Down in SC the fee is $15.99 as they are also a SEC state.
I'm not sure if they're doing it with those teams, but in some markets they also use the fee to cover the additional cost they have to pay for independents and MyNet stations that picked up full season NHL and NBA rights.

If you go to the TVPromise site, you'll likely be able to get a credit for not getting the Hurricanes and additional Hornets games that air on WITN-D2

Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.
Part of the hold out might be the packaging and price for outer areas like how the Thunder needs sports pack for other states. Hopefully they are also pushing for a guarantee from the teams that they would require whoever wins their local broadcasting rights in 2028 to negotiate with MVPDs. Commercial distribution rights are probably a factor too.

I'm guessing they got a deep discount for the Clippers based on how long it took them to officially announce ClipperVision and their KTLA simulcasts after they were basically handed a multi-year draft death penalty.

The Predators and Pistons channels are using feeds supplied by Scripps Sports

The Heat likely depends on whoever they sign for the Fort Myers DMA, as there's no point in paying a high price for the Heat just for that DMA when WPLG is streaming it for free on their app and website for viewers in the Miami DMA, and they already carry the West Palm Beach station.

Still with Choice package? My stepdad says when the game started he got black screen and something to do with not the right package.
He had the Twins the last 2 years and I saw the Wild screen on 668-1 when I was there a few weeks ago.

There were some technical issues during the pregame, where 668 was showing the Pacers feed instead of the Timberwolves feed until a few minutes before the game.

On the stream API it looks like some areas need the Sports Pack, what's his zip code?

Hmmm, I'm not seeing anything like those events in our Hopper 3 guide for tonight or Saturday.🙁

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

edit — I now have the 148-01 4KFox events for Saturday, but not anything for 148-02 or 148-03 which don't even show as available channels. I do have 148-04 4KUSA.

Which is what is interesting, I see the 4KFox channel on 148-01 but we're not subscribed to our Locals. So why it's coming in is puzzling. I thought that maybe it was a perk for Dish subscribers for the MLB Postseason.

I set a Timer for the Indiana - Ohio State game on Saturday. I'll take advantage of it while I can.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

Well, according to the price per ounce on that first bag of coffee he mentions, that would mean the bag weighed over 6 ounces. That bag does NOT weigh 6 ounces. According to Google, an empty bag weighs half an ounce.

Products sold by the ounce, pound, etc, should always be priced for the product only. Only the shipping weight should include the packaging.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner. ;)

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).

I would think that all the packaging would already be accounted for ... they weigh the container, subtract that from the scale, then add the product , so its weighing the Product only

You would be thinking wrong when it comes to goods that are sold by weight (meat, produce, nails). Those items typically go on the scale wrapped without an associated tare. The weight only excludes the sticker because it hasn't been printed yet.

Thats ridiculous ....

Thats not how Deli does it, I know your talking pre packaged.
They need to CHANGE that.
Jimbo
A pound of Coffee, does that include the package it's in ?

No, a pound of coffee refers strictly to the net weight of the coffee itself (16 ounces), not including the weight of the bag or packaging. [1, 2]
  • Net Weight: Food and coffee sold by weight are required by law to list the net weight on the label, which measures only the contents inside the package. [1, 2]
    • Packaging Weight: The foil bag, valve, and label add extra weight to the total item when you hold it, meaning the gross weight on a scale will be slightly more than 16 ounces.
    • Watch Out for Bag Sizes: Always check the label carefully, as many specialty roasters now sell 12-ounce (three-quarter pound) bags while keeping the price or visual impression similar to a full pound. [1, 2, 3]

The larger discrepancies are likely from a data or sync issue. Digital tags don't cause the error, but they can spread one bad entry across a whole store or region instantly. The small cent differences are probably just rounding in the weight, the price data, or both.

Perhaps only for sliced meat and cheese. Salads and similarly "shifty" or "drippy" items are typically weighed in deli cartons of some sort.

My monster burritos (up to two lbs.) are weighed in their foil jackets or paper mache take-out trays, and the jacket/tray is then "sealed" with the printed label as it comes off the printer.

Precision has to give way to practicality in situations like that.

You mean you were pirating the VCII and entering "Wizard numbers" every month after key change? GI finally resorted to changing out the keys twice as often, then even more often, down to just hours, making it mostly untenable?

When i was a kid, i used to salivate envisioning me having a Cband dish. It wasn't until about 1995, I installed my first Cband dish, and i remember it took me about 2 weeks to get that dish aligned properly.. This was before internet, and i had to call and talk with people on the phone about advice on how to properly tune the dish. I can't remember the receiver, but it had a UHF remote. I had the satellite receiver in the living room, but i ported it to two TV's, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. It was so nice being able to control the receiver with the remote in the bedroom about 40 feet from the living room. I remember watching Rosanne feeds where it would air the entire week in succession. Nice nostalgia.

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.

This piece gets me - the fact that Dish has removed SD channels from satellite completely in the name of "HD upgrades".
