New Guy with R15 problems.

Hi Everyone,

My name is James and I've been a DirecTV member/subscriber for about 7 years. I recently decided to upgrade to a DirecTV DVR Plus system (R15) as I needed more space to record pay-per-view events and other tv shows and unfortunately my Panasonic DMR-E80H DVD Recorder doesn't give me enough time to record the shows or pay-per-view events I like (before I'm able to burn them to DVD).

In the span of the past few days, I have experienced problems with my DVR system. It started back on 10/08/06 when I manually set up the DVR to record the WWE No Mercy pay-per-view. I manually set it up as I found that by recording pay-per-view events this way, they are not automatically labeled with an expiration date as to when the recorded programming will not be able for viewing and allows me to keep it on the DVR system for as long as I need it. After about 30 minutes to 35 minutes of recording the program, the DVR stopped recording the program. I'd tried pressing the record button on the remote to continue the recording of the program and it didn't happen. I went into my list and saw that I had about 35 minutes of the pay-per-view recorded and attempted to watch it and the only thing that came up was a black screen which caused the DVR to crash forcing me to reset it.

Monday afternoon, the marathon of Hanna Montana that I had set up on my DVR Sunday night (going into the actual guide and pressing the R button on every episode listed, this did not conflict with any programs and this show is not set up as a regular recording event) only ended up recording 4 out of the 16 episodes. It recorded two other but seems to record in the middle of the shows and seemed to be too short to be full episodes (one was 15 minutes in length and the other was 22 minutes). It was also during this day where I experienced various crashes of the system. These crashes included:

**Not being able to stop/pause/rewind/fast forward a DVR recorded program in my list
**Not being able to delete (or keep) a DVR recorded program once I have finished watching
**Not being to change from one channel to another. It will display the banner information for the channel I selected as if the channel has changed but continually only showing the channel it's currently set on.
**Not being able to pause "live tv."
**Not being able to use the 6 second replay feature
**Not showing (sometimes) blue background splash art for the guide and playlist menus
**Freezing completely on the DirecTV screensaver.
**Black (blank) screens for newly recorded items.

There's a few more but I think you guys get the gist of it.

I called DirecTV Tuesday morning about this (after it was clear I wasn't going to get a "free" replay of the pay-per-view event, as I usually do the next day or two after I purchased a pay-per-view even such as this) and they said my problem was due to the fact I didn't have enough space on the hard drive and that the hard drive will start to behave awkwardly if it starts to lack sufficient space. For the record, I had about 33% free space available on what was supposed to be a 100 hour hard drive. Their advice to me was to clear out some of the older programming and this should correct the problem and if it doesn't to call them back. In the past 24 - 30 hours, I have managed to watch/delete almost 19 hours of television shows I've recorded restoring 19% hard drive space back to the system where it now sits at 51% and I'm still experiencing these problems. As a matter of fact since my talk with DirecTV early Tuesday morning, I had to reset the receiver about 20 times (no lie) in order to get it to function correctly after it freezes for one various reason or another. I am going to call DirecTV back later on this afternoon but I want to know if anyone else has experienced these problems, tell my what's wrong with my receiver or how it can be fixed if anyway possible.

Thanks and please take it easy on the newbie...I did search under DVR plus and R15 and could not find the answers I was looking for.

R15 Issues

I have had all the same problems with my R15. They tried to say my hard drive was to full to but I had 77% free so that threw out that theory. I recorded the race yesterday but when I went to watch it I had only a black screen and they told me it recorded it that way. They wanted me to do the reset but I refused because I didn't want to lose my other programming. I had the same problem on another R15 and did all the resets but in the end they replaced the dvr. This time I refused and they said no replacement unless I did the resets. I said that wasn't acceptable because I knew it was a software glitch and I demanded another option. So now the problem has been escalated further up and I am supposed to get a phone call at 6:30pm tonight. I will let you know the outcome.

I'm sure eventually there will be a super bundle or they will go the Disney+-Hulu route where P+ is one price and then HBO Max is an add-on (or something)

Paramount will have to pay Warner Bothers/ Discovery $650 million "ticking fee"for every quarter, or $7 million per day, if they go past the original merger assured date they put in their contract, which is in September 30th.

Paramount is also on the hook for $7 billion reverse termination fee paid to Warner Brothers/Discovery if the merger doesn't go through period. This could make the merger not worth their money or especially their time. Especially since I heard that Warner Brothers /Discovery is losing billions each month. They have till June 4, 2027 to fight out the deal with regulators and lawyers before the deal completely expires.

So the longer they stretch this out in Court the better for killing the merger. The A.G.s of 12 blue states are using the 1913 bill passed and signed in to law in 1914 - Clayton Antitrust Act - to stop the merger. I would love to see someone in D.C. not get what he wants in the merger in the first place, which was the destruction of CNN and the firing of the anchors he personally doesn't like. :biggrin

Not I. I started streaming for better control of what programming I chose to pay for and because of the $40-50 in extra fees on my bill that I haven't had to pay for more than 10 years now.

I started streaming because that is where the content was, specifically content that didn't come with a bunch of franchise fees, equipment fees, and a bunch of expensive sports that I didn't think was worth the cost.

When I had my Ford Escape, I counted on getting lower MPG due to a number of factors, mostly the increased rolling resistance caused by snow on the road, lower tire pressures due to lower air temperatures, higher drag due to increased air density and frozen precipitation on the car's body, and increased electrical power required by lighting and accessories like wipers. Since ICE are not as efficient as an EV, the energy they normally waste means these impacts are not as significant as when you drive an EV.

The Volvo PHEV I drive now will drop to its EPA range in the Winter (35 Miles Electric range) while I am seeing 50 miles of EV range in the summertime. I don't have a heat pump, but a resistive heater which uses a Watt of electricity to produce one watt of heat energy. It's better to heat the seats and steering wheel (still resistive, but targeting the contact points with less power). ICE is so bad at converting gasoline into forward motion that all that heat can be used to heat up the cabin. That's great when it's cold, but wasted when it's hot out.

Same thing with braking, ICE just heats up the air by rubbing friction material against steel disks (or drums). EV captures the kinetic energy and puts most of it back into the battery.

Wait a minute ....
I dis agree with your 1st paragraph. In a Gas vehicle running the Wipers is Not making less Miles Per Gallon (or per Volt in your case) running things on electric isn't effecting the MPG

2nd paragraph ...
You just pointed out that you lose travel distance in the Winter (Cold) 35 -50 ...

3rd Paragraph
You mentioned that Ice rubs your disks to stop , which it does ....
However, are you trying to say that the EV doesn't rub its disc together to stop ?
Yes it does, your comparing 2 different things, yes the EV kinetic energy, but that kinetic energy is doing what, its making the brakes work.

Both vehicles stop using Brake system, but when you break it down, its still using pads and Drum or rotors to Stop.
They just do it a different way.

Actually, EVs stop the majority of the time using regenerative braking via the electric motors. You can also use the friction brakes, but id say 80-90% of the time I do not, and most EV drivers would be the same.

This is one reason your regular brakes last so much longer on an EV.

Not Knowing your brakes are going to function.
With an Ice Car I Know when I use the brakes, they work .... you sound like they don't use them.

Then again when I had my 4 speed, i'd often times use the engine to slow as well, but never intentionally not use the brake.

Curious, do the EV's and Teslas have a Manual option when you buy them ?

I would not really equate it to engine braking like you are accustomed to.

Honestly, from the passenger seat you cant tell the driver isnt using the brake pedal.

For the driver it is a much smoother experience.

GM has problems with their EV's I hope since they are not announcing new models that they are working on making their EV's more solid and figure out the bugs many people (myself included) have had with their EV's.

I have never been able to drive an EV, so at this point ... I'm just not sure how it all works ...
Thats why I have been asking questions ... so I can learn

I take that back, I did drive an EV once for about 30 minutes, it was a Ford Maverick I believe.

YTA - Nostalgia TV

If you have been in the hobby as long as I have, you may remember watching Nostalgia TV on C-Band. Our local station started carrying YTA which is Your Television America and is distributed on SES11 at 105W. I don't find too much of interest on it but my research came up with their website: YTA Television Network | Your Television America and it states: "Founded in 1985 as the Nostalgia channel, YTA (Your Television America) has a long history providing classic americana programming to audiences across the country." YTA is not the same as the old Nostalgia but I thought I'd stir up a few memories.

Also, at the bottom of the page is galxy.tv link which states it pays you to watch their channel.

I remember the original C band channel of that name. It wasn't the same as the over the air channel of the same name today. I received that locally until earlier this year and it aired mainly movies. Perhaps I'm wrong but I thought that became American Life TV, but it's been a long time.

Seems like they were the forerunners of airing older classic programming that began around the time of Nick at Night or TV land. The days before the original RTN, RTV channels from Equity TV and later from Luken that I loved watching. Thanks for sharing.

In a dual Hopper 3 installation, does Signal Protector failover remain limited to three receivers across the account, or does each Hopper independently provide Signal Protector to its own Joey clients?

Heavily edited and redacted answer.

IMHO since the joey clients are not receivers, just clients, the Hopper does all the work and just sends a signal to each Joey.
However, each signal to a Joey occupies a tuner on the Hopper and AFAIK the Hopper can negotiate three ethernet streams at a time.
With dual Hopper installation that number should apply to each Hopper, so you might be able to have 6 signal protection instances in that case.
