Bring home a new computer with Vista installed might be a rude awakening, and for those folks who are contemplating buying the upcoming new Vista operating program to upgrade from XP beware also!

Why? Your peripherals might not work!

Those old and not so old printers and scanners will need new Vista Drivers.
It will take some time for Vista drivers to be developed for existing gear, and for some they will never get new Vista drivers. Therefore you will have to get new gear.

I have tried the Vista Beta and RC1 and some programs will not work with Vista also.

Please run the compatibility program on your system, it will tell you what will work and what will not.

I'll stick with XP.:)

U.S. Government DOT Bans Vista, Office 2007 and Explorer 7

I just read about this today that the U.S. Department of Transportation (D.O.T.)
has banned Windows Vista, Office 2007, and Internet Explorer 7.

It seems that D.O.T.'s critical applications do not work on Vista. There are some issues with legacy software, but the main problem is that the current standard DOT build doesn't meet Vista's minimum system requirements.

Since Al Gore help to invent the internet maybe he can help D.O.T.:D

As far as Office 2007, I am using Office 2007 and I like it very much. It takes a little bit of time finding out the new bells and whistles also finding where they moved things around, but overall a very nice upgrade.

Sorry for the length! being in IT makes me have opinions about this stuff...

Here's my twin pennies on this thing.

Firstly, in the past people have either upgraded for a reason, or they didn't upgrade. People upgraded from Win3.11 to Win95 because it had a major overhaul of the GUI, more capabilities and... really who wouldn't want better than 'ol 3.11? ;) A lot of the 3.11 boxes could install Win95 and run pretty well. Win95 to Win98 introduced more hardware compatibility, slightly improved interface, better Plug-n-Play (Plug-n-Pray, anyone?), and increased system stability. Again, the more recent Win95 boxes could take the 98 upgrade.

The next step in this line is debatable, so I'll cover both angles. Next official rung on the ladder for home users was Windows ME; everyone I know (or admit to knowing :D ) got Windows 2000 instead. What M$ meant for an office OS, home users grabbed due to the comparative rock-solid stability and much improved GUI / feature set. Sure, when it came out it lacked any sort of real gaming support, 95% of DOS apps wouldn't function, and video drivers were a hack-fest nightmare to say the least. But people were much more inclined to try it anyway than the alternatives- sticking with 98, or eventually WinME.

The only place you ever find Windows ME anymore is on parent's / grandparent's pc's because that's what came on it when they bought it at Wal-Mart. It never caught on because no one had a reason to upgrade to it. Stability was equal (if not decreased) from Win98, bugs and glitches abounded, and the entire thing was quite obviously an alternately-themed previous generation OS. It touted nothing of interest, proven by the fact that home users seized the NT-based Win2k with all its gaming flaws. Patches, service packs and drivers were written for 2k that I'm betting no one anticipated having to do, so the home users could better enjoy the "business" OS.

Next up is XP. This was the best of both worlds; gaming and multimedia support from the day of release, plus the stability of Win2k's NT kernel. Most people running Win2k had enough of a beasty system to handle XP, even if after using it for a couple months you upgraded some hardware. XP was basically what everyone wished Win2k had been... a home OS that was stable enough to run in an office environment. It's now widespread and anyone working in IT that buys or sets up computers uses it. It's the accepted standard and norm, even more so than Win98; remember, back then NT 4.0 was the accepted work OS, splitting the two markets while XP covers both. It's been out since 2002 and is well established in both hardware and driver support. Today's apps and games are meant/made to run on it. It's pretty darn stable- even if you botch things up miserably with bad programming etc you can restart explorer without rebooting and keep right on truckin'.

So enter our latest offering, Windows Vista. Here's where Microsoft gets all sorts of things wrong.

Straight off, your hardware isn't good enough. No, I don't just mean the driver support- Win2k started with miserable driver support and did OK. I mean that your hardware was made more than 12 months ago and isn't fast enough to run Vista properly. Whereas XP can happily run on a 500MHz laptop with 256MB of ram, you may as well own an Apple IIe and try and run Vista. For the first time, M$ is forcing a majority of users to buy entirely new computers to handle this OS. Previously many pc's could handle two OS version in a row, if not three (with some more ram); I've seen 300MHz laptops that shipped with Win95 go through Win98, Win2k and then XP. It's certainly not lightning-fast, but it's functional with the laptop's maximum 256MB of memory.

Secondly, this already annoying fact is compounded by the fact that software and drivers working fine in XP won't always function in Vista. Everyone says, "Let's all wait a while for compatibility to mature..." No one said that about Win2k, despite huge initial incompatibilities. Are we smarter now? No, there's just no reason to upgrade. Is XP very unstable so needs replacing? No. Will the latest software and games only work under the next OS? No, in fact a lot don't. Does it provide us with any new features at all? Well, sure...

We get DRM. Hooray for the man trying to monitor and control our media privileges! Everyone wants that! We get a nifty new way to view our Windows in a 3D fashion. Hey, didn't apple do that years back? I remember running some 3D desktop software on Windows98 that did similar, and it was freeware... huh. What else? Oh, and you get to have twice the horsepower at half the speed! What? Yeah, that's the bottom line for me. I just built a rather nice new box with very decent specs- AMD64 5600+ dual core, with 2GB of DDR2 800 ram- and XP friggin' flies on it. Which means Vista would run fairly well. I just got a new engine in my car, now I should install Windows Vista anchors to the back bumper? Why? Bloatware is acceptable if it's a fair trade; Win98 could be installed onto a 200MB hard drive and run on at 200MHz, while Win2k would easily more than fill twice that and need a better cpu... but the stability was 100% worth it. Where's the trade-off in Vista again?

And that's what it all comes down to, in my book. There is no good reason to "upgrade" to Vista. Every previous new OS had solid reasons for switching, and the best they can do with this one is "Oh, look, pretty ways to arrange your windows!" Sure, the 'latest-and-greatest-gotta-have-it' people will get it. The ones buying new computers will get it by default. But it'll take a real reason for me to purchase the most expensive operating system in history.:D
JonUrban
While there may be no "compelling" reason to upgrade, and I myself am not upgrading my main PC, I did buy a new laptop with Vista Ultimate installed, and as I have stated, I like it a lot. It is fast, it seems solid, and after you get used to it, it really is a nice implementation of an O/S.

With regards to the above two posts, there are some great points made and they are easy to agree with. However, in the context of new and future computers, you can't be unhappy that there is a newer O/S to grow into.

I remember the same arguments when XP came out. Companies were "banning" it, and everyone was complaining that it was a "hog". Now, years later, it's regarded as a great O/S.

Every O/S has to start somewhere, and Vista is a nice start. It's not for everyone yet, and putting it on an older computer is really a mistake. Still, with a new, modern box, and with hardware prices still falling, this will be an O/S that will shine as time goes by.

It's easy to beat on MS. Heck, they deserve it at times, but the Vista O/S is not one of the reasons they should be trashed. It's very nice, when "properly" used!

Message with the wrong flavor

It is true that every new OS had initial problems in upgrading in the past; the matter is that Bill Gates stated that Vista is the most tested of the Windows OS and it has the best security. He expects that there will be few problems with VISTA. Also that Vista will have no problems with software backward compatibility!

This OS has been in the development stage for over 5 years! Originally it was suppose to be a new major update to XP, and it was decided to make it a new operating program instead.

Folks come to this forum to get solutions and to become aware of new and exciting news in technology.

I have provided links earlier to help people test their systems for Vista, and provide special Vista hardware tagging labels awareness, hopefully it helped.

I know that it seems that I am bashing Microsoft; I am just trying to make the awareness of problems associate with the upgrade, and I am not alone in this area.

Anyway it seems that this thread is sending the message with the wrong flavor, therefore it is probably time to let it fade.

My final two cents. :)

No problems with compatibility?! Hmphff.... I've already seen too many I lost count, which is one of the many reasons I wouldn't upgrade even if you paid me to.

Vista hasn't been tested more than XP. I can bet XP has a few more hours of runtime than Vista. :)

People didn't want to upgrade to XP at first since 2000 was awesome. 2 years later, that all changed. The same thing is happening with Vista right now. Vista will have its day. But it will not be in 2 years. I predict around 2010 we will be in the stage of Vista being a regular thing by then. I also predict that several hacks for the removal of embedded DRM will exist too. :hungry:

My company has also stated they do NOT want any Vista builds on their network. If you put one on the network you will be dealt with in the proper manner. We are a large international company...very large....we even have several Microsoft programmers/developers stationed in our buildings with our custom software developers. And no, we do not sell software. ;)

I have a solution that is guaranteed to work.
All Hopper developers are required to turn in their RF Hopper remotes and use only IR remotes.

I guarantee you that the bug will be fixed in two days!
Try it; it will work! They will work 24 hours a day to fix it when the WAF goes into the toilet!

Loaded H713 software on my Hopper 3 last week. Have not seen any change in the IR/RF remote issues with my Harmony 700.
Has Dish acknowledged this is a problem and are they committed to fixing it?
I'd be happy to roll back to last July.

My Hopper 3 updated itself to H713 last week and the IR issue is worse now. On H711, I could be on an SD channel for several hours and the IR side of my H3 would still be responsive without my having to tap the View button on my Pronto Pro every 15 minutes. Now, if I stay even on an SD channel without tapping the View button at least once an hour, it becomes unresponsive to my Pronto Pro without tapping the View button at least 5-20 times, just like on the HD and 4K channels. So, H713 actually made the issue worse. :(

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Pissed off at the crappy healthcare costs

My health Insurance renewal for 2027 just came in. Going from $827 a month to $1,187 a month. Deductible going up a $1k to $9,350. Max out of pocket also going up $1k to $11,000. Doctor co-pay of $40. Urgent Care co-pay $50. ER 50% coinsurance after deductible. That's all in network. Out of network is double, should it be needed.

Have to think about this. I'm really tempted to just go without now. I only go to the doctor once or twice a year. I pay out of pocket for Tirzepitide and can do without the Rosuvastatin (crestor) now. Really tired of spending over $10k a year and getting nothing out of it.

After years with Blue Cross I switched last year to Ambetter as my Blue Cross premium was going from $1200 to $1800 for a Silver plan and the Bronze plan was still going to be $1300 at BCBS. Ambetter was $827 for the same coverage with a Bronze plan. Didn't think it would jump this much so soon.

I'm guessing a Silver plan is probably over $2,000 a month for 2027.

Such a scam. Healthcare.gov shows me cheaper individual plans available for 2027 from ambetter that ambetter doesn't show on their website. Looked it up. I've spent $68,000 in premiums the last 5 years and got nothing out of it except a few doctors visits and labs. 😡

That's why I cancelled ours and just started saving the money. We're about to do the same thing with our home insurance.....not cancel it outright but do away with the portion which covers wind damage. We're paying over $5k right now and that is AFTER I dumbed things down...and it keeps going up. Got a couple trees I want to have taken down first before I do that however. After we do that, it will knock about $3k off our annual premium.

Our home and auto insurance has been stable so I'll continue with it but I'm going to have see what I can do about medical insurance. The biggest impact would be an ER visit.

My wife and I use the same Medicare Advantage plan from United Healthcare. (Yes I have heard the horror stories about Medicare Advantage plans but we have used it for the last 5 years). We are both pretty healthy so it works for us. It costs $0.00 per month for both of us and it pays part of our Medicare part B premium. Next year it will be paying $170 per month of the $220 monthly part B premium for both of us. We also each get $90 per quarter to use on OTC products. $0.00 copay for Dr. visits and $55 copay for specialists. Includes dental and hearing coverage. Never have had an issue with it although I don't really use mine other than for the dental, Part B payments and the OTC benefit as I am a veteran and use the VA for all of my medical needs. I just had a kidney that had a cancer mass removed last month and they allowed me to use a non VA surgeon at a non VA hospital through the VA Community Care program. For all of the doctors visits, exams, tests, surgery, hospital stay, meds etc…was around $60,000 and the the VA paid for it entirely. I did have to pay $16 for the Oxycodone pain pills when I left the hospital that I got from my local CVS instead of waiting for a week for the VA to ship them to me from the VA pharmacy.

They're pushing our high deductible plan pretty hard at work, including a couple thousand to seed a HSA. Covering my wife and 4 kids though that feels like a mistake and I'd rather the peace of mind and the potential higher cost via the PPO plan payroll deductions.

$0.00 copay for Dr. visits
And THAT is one of the big issues causing a lot of the problems. If the minimum copay for Dr. visits was at least $100 then a LOT of folks would opt out of those visits. If it cost the individual nothing then why should they care. All of my older family members are constantly going to doctor visits.....to them it is an adventure.....an outing that allows them a reason to go out to eat at a restaurant. IF they had to pay one cent out of their own pockets a lot of that crap would stop asap.

Sorry...rant off.

You're not wrong that some people treat free visits like a social outing. But it has to be a balance. Put a $100 barrier on a doctor visit and people don't just skip the pointless ones, they skip the important ones too. Then the stuff that would've been a cheap catch at a checkup shows up later in the ER, sicker and way more expensive. The shift we need is from sick care to actual healthcare.

I have Dish with Hopper3. I choose to get local channels OTA and had a "guide list" established at my previous home. Having moved a few miles away, I wanted to update the list by appending a couple new stations via a rescan. As many would know, some stations come in with the UHF/VHF antenna aimed in one direction, while others come in better with a different direction.

Unfortunately, when a scan is done (bringing in 25-30 stations for that particular antenna aim), the dialog screen does not present the established guide list; it presents an empty field to the right that the scanned stations may be selected one by one and added to the empty guide. But because of antenna aim, some stations originally saved are missing, and would have to be retrieved with a different antenna aim. But as I explain, if a 2nd scan is done with a different antenna aim, the stations saved from the first scan are lost.

It troubles me that Dish didn't develop software that would allow a user to simply append only 1 or 2 channels to the established list.

Any thought on this? Has anyone experienced this or heard of this from others?

After having continuing trouble with my eight+ year old Dell Inspiron laptop I am looking to hopefully catch a good deal on new one. My options to buy is Costco and Sam's Club. It seems like a lot of new laptops are 2 in 1 which I do not need. I use the laptop to mainly surf the web and keep up with my finances, money and bills. I would like to have at least a 15" screen and having a touchscreen is a plus. The keyboard would need to lighted also. I don't game any. It would have to be Windows instead of and not Mac. The brands I see the most are Asus, Dell and HP. My two last laptops has been Dell's. Of these brands are there any standouts over the other brands. My budget (hopefully) is $600+-. Also while researching I noticed that do not have ethernet ports.

Why not do a CTO directly through the manufacture? Get exactly what you want. Plus It's quite common to find 10%% (or higher) discount codes for Dell and HP.

Backlit keyboards are pretty much standard, and in the constant effort to try to make devices and thin and dainty as possible ethernet ports are becoming rarer, if not a normal ethernet port, you may be able to find a laptop with drop-jaw style one.

Dell and HP are usually heavily discounted during Black Friday sales. I picked up a Dell from Best Buy for 50 percent off. I ordered it online and picked it up locally at the store. Black Friday deals are just a couple of weeks away.

Can't really help with an exact set of suggestions. I can say that if you have a set budget. And $600 these days wont get you much. One thing I can say is check out Dell Refurbished.
I've suggested and even configured, ordered a few for friends who were a bit iffy in deciding what they needed and wanted.
Refurbished doesn't mean that they came back defective and were repaired. Companies and organizations who order quantities of the same computers often cancel or modify their requirements.
Dell builds usually on demand. Their direct refurbished line will be brand new, unused. Perhaps not exactly the "today" specifications of the latest-greatest. And you can get a nice pc for quite a bit less with full warranty.
Just a suggestion.
"I use the laptop to mainly surf the web and keep up with my finances, money and bills. I would like to have at least a 15" screen and having a touchscreen is a plus".

As far as Asus, HP goes. And others you may consider. I'd think $600 (new) would get you a laptop. A quality, long lasting one? Not so sure. Now. If you could get a $1000 lappy for $600. Good deal, don't you think?
Surf the web doesn't need a killer Nvidia graphics chip. Nor a pinnacle, top of the line Intel, AMD processor.
12-16 gigs of memory will get you by just fine.
I'm personally an Asus fan. Brands aside. The one thing is the batteries. We discussed that here someplace else.
I repair these critters. Batteries. Cheap laptops have cheap batteries. Asus suggests that you don't keep the charger plugged in all of the time to make them last. Like you see on phones where 85% vs full charge is suggested to preserve battery life.

Why not do a CTO directly through the manufacture?
Because there are fewer economies of scale with custom products. Savings come from giant contracts with major retailers.

RAM and GPUs make buying a computer now financial suicide. In 2023, I bought two 16GB RAM modules for my lone Windows machine. The cost was under $100. Now that equivalent RAM goes for $260.

One can opt for an on-CPU GPU, but you can't opt out of RAM. While Microsoft goes on and on about Windows 11 eventually being happy with 8GB of RAM, we know how that always ends.
Foxbat
GB is the new MB (remember when Windows used to be happy with 8 MB of RAM?)

I had great experiences with Dell's Refurbished systems in the past. I ended up getting Business desktops instead of the Home PCs since they didn't come loaded with bloatware and the one Desktop I got for Mrs. Foxbat even had a license for MS Office Professional included.

Buckeyes had 2 weeks off and came out and looked absolutely terrible ... broke in a new Freshman Qb, but that wasn't the worst part ... undiscipline play, at last count they had 10 penalties.
Freshman in the end of the game trying to play catch up, had a lot of Over throws ... Bucks lose ...

#1 Miami struggled but pulled away in the end beating North Carolina by 3 ...

Tuesday the CFP brings out thier Playoff Top 12 again ... Buckeyes should drop from #2 to about #22 (they won't) had they had thier Starting QB, it would have been a different game ...

They could lose the rest of thier games at this point.

My in-Laws came from Iowa, she was a graduate of ISU. Unranked Iowa teams beat the #24 and #25 teams on Halloween.

And I heard that your QB made a poor choice after scoring the tying touchdown, leading to a fifteen yard penalty on the ensuing kickoff. The Cyclones were then able to take advantage of the resulting field position to get close enough to score the winning field goal.

In a NCAA Football season of bizarre endings, this has to rank right up there.

My in-Laws came from Iowa, she was a graduate of ISU. Unranked Iowa teams beat the #24 and #25 teams on Halloween.

Yep, but wasn't the QB. Was WR. Offense had a great game but defense didn't show up at all. I don't think they were even in the State.

I had an old Wireless Joey replaced by a Wireless Joey 4 (Android TV) - still have a Hopper 3 without the Hopper Plus. What do I have to do to get the EPG to show channel logos instead of "Dish"? This is annoying as hell and it's been this way for over a month…

Correct me if I'm wrong but Dish borrowed lots of money to start a wireless company that was most likely doomed from the beginning. They bought spectrum at any cost to acquire enough bandwidth to achieve their goal. They signed leases and bought equipment and borrowed more money. They held onto the spectrum as long as possible. They then sold most of it to different companies and made a lot of money. Then they started to screw the companies that were installing and leasing the equipment and cell towers. Now they are going to claim bankruptcy under the Dish Network part of Echo Star while they have billions of dollars. So Dish basically took everyone's money that was involved in the financial part of this transaction made a huge profit is screwing everyone over from the banks to the little guy working on the towers and infrastructure.

They note that the Dish Wireless radios at issue support the 2GHz and 800MHz spectrum SpaceX is acquiring from EchoStar and Grain.

"Buying compatible equipment already installed on towers could give SpaceX a head start on its wireless terrestrial network build and throw a big bucket of cold water on Verizon's four-to-six-year timeline and $300-$500 billion estimate for SpaceX's buildout," said the analysts."

Back when Dish was installing antennas everywhere for their internet service I mapped several of the tower locations around me. One is less than a mile away from me and several more about three miles away in several different directions. If SpaceX does something with these I may be in a prime spot.
