Everytime I go to one of Dish Networks shows where they showcase new technology I always award one product or idea as the "SatelliteGuys.US Best In Show" Award Winner.

Last September the "SatelliteGuys.US Best In Show" winner was the Dish 522 DVR, the Dish 522 was selected because of its new interface, becauseof its agile stereo modulator and becauuse of the fact that you could serve 2 rooms from one receiver.

While the software has taken awhile to make the 522 into the world class receiver it really is, I am still very proud to have picked it as last years "SatelliteGuys.US Best in Show" winner.

This year at Team Summit we saw a lot of great thing, and for the first time ever we saw a lot of working concepts. These concepts may or may not ever see the light of day, while some concepts such as Name Based Timers will see the light of day other ideas such as "The Best of Dish" deserve to die a quick death.

As the founder of SatelliteGuys.US I am proud to introduce the winner of this years "SatelliteGuys.US Best in Show" award winner, the "MP3 & JEPG Feature"

mp3_concept1.jpg

I enjoyed the MP3 & JPEG Feature concept which was shown at team summit not just because you can store photos and music files on your DVR's hard drive, but because of the fact that this feature can be added to equipment you already own.

I don't like calling this exciting upgrade the "MP3 & JPEG Feature" so from now on I will refer to this upgrade as "The Dish Multimedia Center"

While demoed on a Dish 522 Receiver the Dish Multimedia Center could work on any Dish DVR which has a USB port. To transfer files to the Dish Multimedia Center you need a Portable USB storage device such as the Lexar Jumpdrive (shown below)

jd_secure_page_pic.gif

These cards can be purchased anywhere. I picked up a 128 MB Lexar unit a few weeks ago at WalMat for $29. They work like external hard drive, you just plug them into your computer, copy your MP3 and Picture files to them and then you can unplug the portable drive from your computer, and now you have your files stored on your keychain.

When the Dish Multimedia Center software is released you will notice a few new items on your main menu. (as shown below)

mp3_concept6.jpg

These new features include USB Storage (which lets you copy files from your USB storage device), Image Viewer (which lets you view images stores on your USB sotrage device or from the DVR's hard drive) and a MP3 player which again will play off the USB storage device or the DVR hard drive.

If you go to USB storage, without a USB storage device inserted you will get a blank screen as shown below.

mp3_concept3.jpg

When you insert a USB storage device the DVR will automaticly give you a list of compatable files found on that storage device. (It will accept MP3 audio files and most picture formats except for GIF picture files) When it is inserted a screen will pop up which looks like the one below.

mp3_concept4.jpg

You can now select the songs you want to copy to the DVR hard drive and click process, this will copy the files to the DVR.

Once copied you can make your own playlists, and you can also have your own slide show while the music is playing! The slide show will change slides at an interval which you select. You can make many playlists and choose the list your in to mood for.

mp3_concept5.jpg

When pictures are displayed they are resized to fit your TV. For looking at high quality photos on a standard NTSC Television, I was impressed how good the demo pictures looked.

When you are in a playlist you can select specific songs or click play them all.

mp3_concept2.jpg

The audio sounds great, of course it works best if you have your DVR plugged into your stereo system, at the show they were demoing the DishComm powerline audio sending unit with this feature. With Dishcomm you can listen to your MP3 (or Sirius from Dish) in any room in your house, the audio is sent over the power lines in your house.

While currently this feature is planned for the 522, they hope to bring it to other DVR models as well such as the 508 and 510. I REALLY hope this bring this feature to the 921 and 942 as well. Imagine having a LCD or plazma scarrn on your wall, and while you are not watching TV your favorite photos are being displayed on the HDTV in full resolution! When not in use your HDTV could be like a big picture frame. :)

Let's hope this product goes from CONCEPT to release! And imagine if you would that this idea could be expanded upon, if the Multimedia center had support for Windows Media, you could actually transfer and display family movies and more to the Dish DVR and be able to watch them whenever you want from your EZ Chair!

So there you have it, this years "SatelliteGuys Best In Show" award winner the Dish Multimedia Center Upgrade!

I guess one has to get two 721's instead of one 522. You can get two 721's now for less than what one 721 cost when it first came out. You do not get charged the DVR fee and no additional outlet fee on the second tuner. Having two 721's would allow you to get more events recorded or to watch a show while an event is recording vs. having one 522 although you would get charged the additional outlet fee on tuner one for the second 721. You would also have twice the recording time. One 522 would cost $350 vs. $500 for two 721's. I think the better interface, extra two tuners and additional recording space is worth the extra money.
O
WHere are you seeing 721's for 250$ at? Please do tell.
Stargazer
Dish Network has a promotion through the retailer where you can get one for $250. I do not know if you could find a retailer that would sell you a second one for that or not but I believe that is their cost for the receiver at this point in time and they would still make a little on the activation (although there are shipping costs). I seen some posted not long ago for $260 but those sold out.

Do the 522 receivers have usb ports in them?
Looks like no one ever did answer you, so, yes, they do have USB ports on them. I thought that was pretty obvious from the very first post in this thread, but....

I must have overlooked that, sorry.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

My wife mentioned that her remote is acting strange this morning. She hit FF and it went to 15x FF.

This has been an ongoing issue. A fix is coming, probably in the next software version.

I have Dish Hopper and Hopper Plus and also have Alexa Echo. I link the Alex skill to Dish and it asks me to enter the pairing code shown on the TV. I go into Dish Settings and there is no Alexa shown. Not sure what to do.

Guys,
Android is Google. Google is Android. Android OS and Google TV are the same thing.
The Hopper+ and Joey 4's run Android TV, which is Google's television version of Android.
That means under the hood, you have:
  • Linux kernel
  • Android framework
  • Google TV / Android TV interface
  • Google Play Store for TV apps
Alexa is the competition. Google is not going to host their competition.
The old Hopper Carbon UI is NOT Google so that's why Alexa was on there.
H
Understood. But here's the rub - Google Assistant setup is ALSO missing from the Hopper Plus setup. I'm a paraplegic.and need to use voice controls as much as possible but I can't press a button on the remote to activate Google Assistant. I prefer ALEXA (or ALEXA+) but I have one older google device and will go that route IF they make it available. BTW calling Dish Customer Service is no help- they just say they have no info on if/when there will be an update.

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

I'm sure I will watch at least the first episode but I am not optimistic.

Paramount lost a number of the Star Trek creative crew to other projects, like Ron Moore going on to BSG and "For All Mankind". I see Denise and Michael Okuda are also involved with FAM.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

Where would this "dirt" come from? Dead skin and dandruff?

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

A continuation of a thread from the pub, just general discussion of AI.

Brief 60 minute clip about next gem autonomous fighters - not remote controlled, but rather collaborating with controllers and aircraft in the theater.

Agreed, it mostly regurgitates known solutions. That's the point. Nobody needs an innovative fix for a driver error or a creative way to format a report. Let it handle the solved problems so people can spend their time on the ones that aren't.

That's the point at which innovation ends, and there's no longer any point to software engineering other than swatting bugs that result from misapplication.

Addressed by what you didn't quote. This cycle is as old as computing: compilers, libraries, frameworks each automated the tedious part, and the human work moved up a level. Innovation didn't end; it shifted. And people still make new compilers, libraries or frameworks.

Nobody's forced to hand anything off. Anyone who wants to keep doing it by hand still can, and people who couldn't do it at all now can.

... and people who couldn't do it at all now can.
Misapplication isn't something that the casual coder can identify. They can only discover, the hard way, that it doesn't work at some point.

You're not wrong, but that's part of learning. Whether from others or our own mistakes, we've all learned that lesson one way or another.

I'm not sure that the school of hard knocks is the quickest or surest education to find your way.

There are many examples in the headlines of people getting burned multiple times and not wavering in their pursuit of stupidity.

Good thing not everyone will have to learn the hard way then. The same tools can explain why something broke.

This is true of literally anything, though.

Happy to agree to disagree, but I'm already enjoying the dividends personally and helping others at work and at home do the same.

Been reading this thread but not commenting much, primarily because there is so much "news" out there on this topic and it is hard to tell what is real and what is theater.
My biggest problem with AI is that these agents are taught...not necessarily programmed but taught. Well, there's an old saying "garbage in/garbage out". I remember a Joe Rogan show a while back when he had Elon Musk on and they talked about AI and Elon said one of the AIs (can't remember which one, sorry) was asked which was worse, Thermonuclear War or mis-gendering Kaitlyn Jenner and it came back with the answer that mis-gendering was worse. Now forget the politics involved with all the gender stuff we have been subjected to the past few years.....to say that mis-gendering is worse than the killing of hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of human beings.....Kaitlyn Jenner included.....is simply insane not to mention incredibly dangerous.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Odd that out there, Prem is only 40 cents higher. Here it's a full dollar more.

Last night it was about $4.17 gas, $6,19 diesel.
