The Stars Fell on Henrietta

Sypnosis: Mr. Cox (ROBERT DUVALL) is a wildcat oilman -- a speculator who believes he can detect the site of a productive oil well just by examining the land around it. He's spent decades in the oil business, some better than others, but, although he's helped other oilmen make their fortunes, he's never had a strike of his own.

The year is 1935 and the Great Depression has etched its way across America. Mr. Cox has found himself moving from one Texas boomtown to another, living out of his suitcase, pursuing a relentless, elusive dream. His quest is for an oil strike so huge and so rich that he will find not only wealth, but validation for who he is and what he has always done.

The dream remains just out of reach. Now Mr. Cox has arrived at a crossroads near Henrietta. Texas, virtually destitute, with only his cat Matilda and the memories of his many near-misses to keep him company. He is a man to whom history has not been kind, acknowledged by his peers as an eccentric failure.

Driven by nothing more than complete faith in his instincts, Mr. Cox would be willing to risk everything for one real chance at success.

In contrast, Don and Cora Day (AIDAN QUINN and FRANCES FISHER) and their three little girls have a small cotton farm on the outskirts of Henrietta. Daily life has become an ongoing struggle and they are now facing the possibility of losing their land to the bank.

Into this situation comes a polite and eccentric gentleman whom Don Day has rescued from a blinding dust storm. The man, Mr. Cox, takes one look around the Days' property, sniffs the air, and experiences the kind of revelation that will change the course of his life. He has absolute certainty that there is black gold on their property. All he needs is five thousand dollars to rent a drilling rig, and the Day family's permission to turn their moribund cotton field into an oil field.

The Days are stunned -- both by the thought that they could be sitting on oil and by the outrageous idea that they'd have five thousand dollars to squander on anything, much less a stranger's quirky proposition. They ask their guest to leave immediately. But Mr. Cox, unfazed, departs for the nearby boomtown of Big Stone, determined to raise the cash himself, even if it means taking an extraordinary chance with the wealthy, arrogant and profiteering oil magnate Big Dave (BRIAN DENNEHY), who has nothing but contempt for Mr. Cox.

Meanwhile, Don Day has had the spark of an idea planted in his head. He soon undertakes his own serious risk, gambling the last of the family's meager income on a borrowed dream of oil. He suddenly finds himself willing to risk even the love and approval of his wife in order to take a chance on lifting his family from their hand-to- mouth life.

When Mr. Cox reappears, he discovers the Day family already hard at work on making a dream -- once his, now all of theirs -- into a reality. In the process, they each discover what is truly important to themselves -- and they learn that hope is not an emotion reserved only for the young.

THE POPE OF GREENWICH VILLAGE

Synopsis: Picture if you will two cousins, Charlie (Mickey Rourke) and Paulie (Eric Roberts), prowling the mean streets of New York's Little Italy. Charlie is reasonably put-together, a maitre d' at a chic café who aspires to running his own restaurant someday. Paulie is an incurable flake who can't resist a temptation or a goofball scheme, couldn't tell the truth to save his soul, and keeps splashing Charlie with the street slop of his slewing trajectory through life. This includes drawing him into the circles of Mob crime, most especially Paulie's boss, that supreme sleazebag "Bedbug Eddie" (Burt Young).
Michael Cimino is said to have had a hand in this movie, though the credited director is Stuart Rosenberg--an impersonal craftsman often hired in midshoot after the star and a more volatile director had parted company. This helps account for the picture's overall lack of rhythm and its wavering between overemphatic, Ethnic-with-a-capital-E idiosyncrasy, and low-key befuddlement. Still, it has its charms, most of them deriving from a terrific cast. At the time it came out, in the summer of 1984, Rourke and Roberts were both exciting, unpredictable talents; Roberts in particular had an amazing talent for being somebody brand new--psychologically, even physically--in every film he made. But even though they're hitting on all cylinders, the boys are quietly upstaged by some redoubtable old pros: the great Kenneth McMillan, the ineffable M. Emmet Walsh, and--scoring her umpteenth Oscar® nomination as the mother of an ill-fated cop--Miss Geraldine Page. --Richard T. Jameson

Actually, EVs stop the majority of the time using regenerative braking via the electric motors. You can also use the friction brakes, but id say 80-90% of the time I do not, and most EV drivers would be the same.

This is one reason your regular brakes last so much longer on an EV.

Not Knowing your brakes are going to function.
With an Ice Car I Know when I use the brakes, they work .... you sound like they don't use them.

Then again when I had my 4 speed, i'd often times use the engine to slow as well, but never intentionally not use the brake.

Curious, do the EV's and Teslas have a Manual option when you buy them ?

I would not really equate it to engine braking like you are accustomed to.

Honestly, from the passenger seat you cant tell the driver isnt using the brake pedal.

For the driver it is a much smoother experience.

I have never been able to drive an EV, so at this point ... I'm just not sure how it all works ...
Thats why I have been asking questions ... so I can learn

I take that back, I did drive an EV once for about 30 minutes, it was a Ford Maverick I believe.

Mechanically it's very different - but in practice, most EVs just feel like they have more drag on them and you have to keep the pedal down to keep them going instead of coasting - but even then there are options. My EV9 I can set to allow it to do that - have no resistance and it'll coast. Some do that to try and min/max miles on long trips (I don't). Most (like me) just leave it as-is, and I drive it mostly like normal - slowing in traffic I just ease up on the gas, and stopping at a light I only need to use the brake to bleed off the last bit of momentum to come to a smooth stop. The other extreme is available too, I can go full 1-pedal driving and increase the resistance to the point that it will capably stop as fast as you'd expect at any light or traffic transition. Options are nice, and many vehicles have them.

It largely feels the same, minor adjustment to how the vehicle starts/stops/stays at speed. Mechanically - yeah, big differences going on, as evidenced by the last dozen posts. For most the end result is just low / no maintenance and it all just kinda works.

I usually leave mine on the high setting, then use it to ease to a stop at the light. I use the brakes about once a week, but just to clean them off really.

GM has some issues here or there on some of the EVs, but one pedal driving is one thing IMO that they do better than most of the others. I definitely prefer their implementation over Tesla.

My biggest problem is going back and forth from the EV9 to the R1T.

The EV9 I just leave on Lvl3 regenerative braking. The EV9 uses brake blending so once regenerative braking is maxed out it blends in the mechanical brakes. Also lvl3 on the EV9 doesn't bring it to a full stop, you have to use the brake pedal once it gets to 3-4mph to come to a full stop.

The Rivian is fully regenerative braking. Let off the accelerator and it comes to a full stop. The Rivian also has a more aggressive regen profile than the EV9, so sometimes when I get back in the ev9 and let off the accelerator expecting to come to a full stop then realize I'm not in the Rivian and nearly break my neck hitting the brakes at the last min to come to a full stop.

Coming from the Y I would have probably always used max i-pedal in the Kia and continued to use one-pedal, but it resets with every drive and you have to be stopped / parked to change it, so I just never did and now I'm 21 of 36 months into my lease and these habits aren't changing now

Yeah, this is kinda how I felt when we had the Y and a 90s Tahoe. Such different driving profiles between the two, on top of one pedal vs standard driving.

I saw this as well. As an owner of two of GM's EVs, I sure hope that GM doesn't abandon their EV platform entirely. It really is good, but the software feels half-baked and GM can definitely improve upon that.

Purchasing New iPhone

I feel like this was discussed in another thread, but I can't find it. I have T-Mobile and my last iPhone upgrade was in 2020. I want to get a new iPhone, but what is the best way to go about doing it? Should I order the iPhone from T-Mobile directly, or should I buy from the Apple Store? I feel like there are pros/cons to each option.

I saw that Tim Cook is quoted as saying that the next iPhones will have higher prices due to the increase in RAM costs. So it might make sense to buy now at the price you know versus waiting for the next iPhone with a $100-300 higher starting price tag. There's also the Siri requirement for 12 GB of RAM internally to support on-phone A.I.

Another update to the phone itself is if it will support the new Starlink connectivity. I might wait for the word from Apple before deciding. My 15PM is doing OK for now. Cost is not a big issue for me but I do understand the new shortage on RAM and no solution to that for the foreseeable future.

I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max, and my wife and daughter both have iPhone 13 Pros, and my son has an iPhone SE 3rd Gen. I had been on the fence about upgrading during this next cycle in the fall or wait until next year with the 20th anniversary next year since I am assuming iOS 29 next year would be the last one supported by our current phones. I normally would never consider doing an upgrade once March rolled around and especially not during the summer right before, but two things have me looking at getting all of our phones upgraded this weekend; Apple's price increases on everything else last month and the strong indication that the iPhone 18 lineup will see substantial price increases to match, and everything I've read about the 18 line is saying this is more like an "S" update like Apple used to do. I don't see a single feature being rumored on the iPhone 18 lineup that I absolutely have to have. My thought is upgrade to the iPhone 17 Pro Max for myself, and the Pro for the rest of my family to get in before the price increases, knowing the specs on the 17 Pro/Max should last a while just like our 13 Pro/Max has done. My son is going to get a really nice upgrade coming from the SE3. The deals that Verizon has right now also are very good, and as much as I would rather go do this at the Apple Store, it's my son's phone that has me going directly to Verizon to do the upgrades. The trade in/bill credits are identical on the 13 Pro/Max lines with Apple and Verizon, but the SE3 is quite a bit lower with Apple whereas Verizon is matching the $830 bill credit like the other three lines.

This right here is the main reason I am looking to upgrade right before the next release cycle. Say the price increase is an average of $200; that makes the entry iPhone 18 Pro Max $1399 instead of $1199 for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, or approximately a 16% increase. We keep our phones for 5 years on average which is why getting the iPhone 17 Pro Max now doesn't sound so bad to me, even if that means one less year of support down the road.

I also have an unused with new battery XS Pro whatever that works fine, save for certain apps. Sigh. I was happy with that phone…..

Gave it to my MiL and "upgraded" - only to find her facility installed a new required app that needed a more recent smartphone. Devil take the hindmost, these people being the ones without smartphones.

If I had a 15 Pro Max I would be keeping it for a while as well. One feature I'm certainly looking forward to is the USB-C port which means I can finally ditch the USB-C to Lightening cable in my travel bag since my work laptop and iPad Pro are also USB-C. In fact, when the 15 Pro Max came out, I was tempted due to the USB-C port but thought against it as not compelling enough to spend the money.

I'm sure eventually there will be a super bundle or they will go the Disney+-Hulu route where P+ is one price and then HBO Max is an add-on (or something)

Not I. I started streaming for better control of what programming I chose to pay for and because of the $40-50 in extra fees on my bill that I haven't had to pay for more than 10 years now.

I started streaming because that is where the content was, specifically content that didn't come with a bunch of franchise fees, equipment fees, and a bunch of expensive sports that I didn't think was worth the cost.

I don't think the Sports is worth the cost, but I still buy the NFL and MLB.

When I say, not worth the cost ... I mean they could cut the cost in half and they would get more people watching.

MLB is actually pretty decent price, for the Out of Market ... the Home team they charge to much.

And with streaming, you get that choice, you also no longer have to pay that RSN fee for sports you do not watch, like the NBA/NHL.

I would assume they you paying for YTTV, MLB and the NFL ST, is still a lot cheaper than DirecTV and MLB/NFL and of course, the RSN fee.

I am on the fence right now. I am wondering if I should or should not. I am tempted, plus the fact that I feel I missed out some not getting the iPhone and waiting until the iPhone 3G to get one.

I just saw a YT on new airport carryon restrictions. (It's on the Internet, it MUST be true!) Some smart watches, such as the Apple Ultra, must be removed before going thru the newest version of airport scanners. Same for BT ear pods etc.

Might be. I have had a pacemaker for years so I always bypass the loop and have to get wanded.
The Ultra is bigger than the standard Apple watch and my wife's standard has never triggered the alarm.
I think TSA are over the top with their rules. But I admit I'm biased as one of their agents stole a camera from me years ago during an over zealous camera bag inspection while I was pulled aside for a pat down. Security caught the theft on camera but TSA did noting even after I filed a formal written complaint on their form. After that I stopped flying, period. If I can't drive or go on a private plane, I don't go. TSA at cruise terminals use cruise line rules and so far has been safe. They allow me to keep an eye on my stuff while being wanded.

If your flying on a Private plane, don't you STILL have to go thru TSA or some kinda Security check .... I gotta believe there is.

No. You don't go through any security. You walk straight from your car to the plane. I've flown private hundreds of times and one of the teams that I "own" at my current company is the flight operations team. So I'm fairly knowledgeable here. We currently have 2 Gulfstream G650 ERs. We are required to keep records of all travelers for the FAA and if a passenger is "not personally known" to us then we do have to check ID. But there is zero security check or anything else.

The craziest story I have of taking off with zero monitoring was back in ~2003 (important to note that this was post-Sept 11). I was at a client's company location in London, KY and was traveling to a different company location in Goldsboro, NC. I wanted to leave early so I asked the pilots to be ready to go at 7 AM. The craziest story I have of taking off with zero monitoring was back in ~2003 (important to note that this was post-Sept 11). I was at a client's company location in London, KY and was traveling to a different company location in Goldsboro, NC. I wanted to leave early so I asked the pilots to be ready to go at 7 AM. I didn't know that the "airport" didn't open until 9:00, but the pilots got the gate code the night before and we loaded up and left with no one else there (including any air traffic control).

Talk about crazy stories- Note- I never did my solo flight as I just ran out of money. But we had a rental Piper Lance for a job in North Caicos. My boss for the two weeks was the pilot who hired me to operate his dive resort he owned. So getting ready ti head home, he said "wheels up at 4AM. Need to get through the Carolinas before the storms hit." So next morning we got to the air strip in the woods. It was pitch black dark. He said, "I didn't think, can't see the runway too dark." I had an idea. I lined the runway center with cyalume glow sticks I kept in my dive bag. I got in the right seat and he said it's your idea you take off. I aimed down the runway by the light of the glow and did my lift off where I marked with 3 sticks to prevent hitting the end next to the water. He took over to land in Provo to clear customs. I flew to Palm Beach Airport on autopilot where we checked in customs and refuel. He landed. I told him, you can take off, it's daylight now.

So did you find takeoff's in the dark easy where you couldn't see where the runway ended in the ocean?

I'm afraid my flight training was during the day, and the nearest ocean was 700 miles away, so I can't say for sure. I just found taking off a matter of applying power, keeping the nose lined up in the right direction, and pulling back when the airplane reached the rotation velocity. But that was over fifty years ago and I'm sure I would not be as capable as I was then.

Landing was more of a dance between altitude, air speed, throttle, flaps, ailerons, elevator, rudder, oh, and yeah, talking to the tower. I didn't do well with the radio and flying. That was the main reason I didn't end up getting further along in my flight training, I was not good at understanding the controller. It's one thing to listen to a radio on the ground, another when you're pilot in command.

I'm still a bit miffed that Apple is dropping support for the Watch Ultra 1 for watchOS27. I had thought about getting a Series 11 or maybe the 12 depending on the cost, but then again the Ultra still goes long on a charge and still does everything I need and want (minus the sleep apnea detection) and I have to really think is trading it in on a newer one really the best option? I feel differently on the iPhone itself; if it is out of support I upgrade it since I need that for things including for work.
