DirecTV Announces First Quarter Results:

From DirecTV's Website:

The DIRECTV Group Announces First Quarter 2007 Results

DIRECTV U.S. First Quarter Financial Highlights

-- Net Subscriber Additions of 235,000 Driven by an Increase in
Gross Additions and the Lowest Monthly Churn Rate in 3 Years
of 1.44%

-- Revenues Increase 11% to Over $3.5 Billion Fueled by a 5.2%
Increase in Average Monthly Revenue Per Subscriber (ARPU) to
$73.40

EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 9, 2007--The DIRECTV Group, Inc. (NYSE:DTV) today reported that first quarter revenues increased 15% to $3.91 billion and operating profit before depreciation and amortization(1) increased 54% to $930 million compared to last year's first quarter. The DIRECTV Group reported that first quarter 2007 operating profit increased 44% and net income increased 43% to $563 million and $336 million, respectively, when compared to the same period last year. Earnings per share were $0.27 compared with $0.17 in the same period last year.

"First quarter results highlight DIRECTV U.S.' operating strength and ability to generate strong cash flow as indicated by the $343 million of cash flow before interest and taxes in the quarter. The increase in gross subscribers and the lowest churn rate in three years reflect the strength of DIRECTV's video service and improved competitive positioning in the marketplace. Particularly noteworthy was the significant growth in advanced products in the quarter, including the addition of nearly twice as many high definition, or HD, customers compared to the prior year," said Chase Carey, president and CEO of The DIRECTV Group, Inc.

Carey continued, "The increased sales of HD and digital video recorders are driving favorable results for most of our key operating metrics. For example, the quarterly increase in gross subscriber additions to 929,000, the decline in monthly churn to 1.44% and the ARPU growth of over 5% to $73.40 were all favorably impacted by the significant increase in sales of advanced services. The strong subscriber and ARPU growth drove revenues to over $3.5 billion, up 11% over the prior year."

Carey added, "Operating profit before depreciation and amortization of $869 million increased over 50% compared to last year primarily due to the capitalization of set-top boxes under the lease program implemented in March 2006. Upgrade and retention costs, including capitalized equipment, were higher than the prior year due to the increased number of customers upgrading to HD and DVR services, as well as converting to our new MPEG-4 HD equipment. As we've seen in recent quarters, investments in subscribers with advanced services continue to drive superior financial returns that are generally 2 to 3 times greater than subscribers without advanced services due to the significantly higher ARPU and lower churn generated from these households."

Carey concluded, "It's very exciting to see the strong demand for HD services, particularly considering the fact that we plan to greatly expand our HD programming later this year. With the successful launch of DIRECTV 10--currently targeted to lift-off in late June--we remain on schedule to offer up to 100 HD channels by the end of this year. With this added capacity, we expect to offer significantly more HD channels than most of our competitors, providing DIRECTV with an important advantage in this rapidly growing market."

THE DIRECTV GROUP'S OPERATIONAL REVIEW

Lease Program. On March 1, 2006, DIRECTV U.S. introduced a set-top receiver lease program primarily to increase future profitability by providing DIRECTV U.S. with the opportunity to retrieve and reuse set-top receivers. Under this new program, set-top receivers are capitalized and depreciated over their estimated useful lives of three years. Prior to March 1, 2006, set-top receivers provided to new and existing DIRECTV U.S. subscribers were immediately expensed upon activation as a subscriber acquisition, upgrade or retention cost. The lease program is expected to result in a reduction in all of these costs. The amount of set-top receivers capitalized during the period is now reported in the DIRECTV U.S. Consolidated Statements of Cash Flows under the captions "Cash paid for subscriber leased equipment - subscriber acquisitions" and "Cash paid for subscriber leased equipment - upgrade and retention." The amount of cash DIRECTV U.S. paid during the quarter ended March 31, 2007 for leased set-top receivers totaled $406 million - $188 million for subscriber acquisitions and $218 million for upgrade and retention. By comparison, in March 2006 DIRECTV paid $86 million for leased equipment - $46 million for subscriber acquisitions and $40 million for upgrade and retention.

Let's see... The "other guys" get equipment for evaluation form an unnamed source at D*. You get personal interviews with Charlie Ergen, get to present him with an award and get invited to all the E* functions that the "great unwashed" never get to set foot into. Yet it's the "other guys" that are in bed with D* and you that are "independent"?

Follow the money. If Charlie paid Scott's way down to Atlanta and to Dallas, I'll say you've got a point. If not, then yes, Scott is "independent". Scott, IMHO, is acting as a reporter. DBStalk is a paid mouthpiece.

Man I wish Charlie paid me to go to Atlanta or Dallas. But honestly all that money came out of my own pocket to bring these things to you.

Hell even our meeting with Charlie cost me clost to $1,400 for the room and catering

Folks still dont understand that I put more into the board then I make from it, yet in that The joy doing this board more then makes up for it in the long run. For me this is my hobby, a hobby I love. And if you know me, you know that I don't drink or smoke, I don't bowl, dont go out playing cards. My hobby is Satellite TV. And yes I am an addict.

(Hi my name is Scott and I am a Satellite TV Technology addict) :D

Why do I do it? Its because I love this industry and technology and I love helping others learn about it more. If I am doing that I am happy. :)

I will tell you what if I could get a HR 20 and subscribe to DirecTV without a 2 year commitment I would do it. In all honesty I HATE not knowing whats going on at DirecTV. When people talk to me about DirecTV I feel lost with no clue what they are saying.

Its a good thing I got a loving wife who understand my addiction. :D

What's your issue with the 2 year commitment? Remember, you can always cancel early and pay no more then $300. IMHO a lot more people would benefit from the dollars spent on that vs. what you spent on the real time web broadcast of the satellite pioneer dinner.
B
someone blow a whistle and stop the insanity.

Im as big a fanboy of D* as anyone. D* works for me. They have the programming I like! Noone can argue with that.

With that being said Ive thought about this little D* vs E* and Scott this and DBSTalk that.

Ive come to my own conclusion.

Scott has fantastic connections with E* and a great relationship with them and should use all of his connections to get as much information as possible.

This website isnt the freaken NY Times. Its a site that a guy runs to help people with satellite questions. In this case his connections are with E*. Most of his sponsors target E* customers. It behooves him to make sure his E* section is complete and in this case noone on the net can touch him.

Scott is under no obligation to sub to D*. We arent obliged to come here either. Noone makes us read the info here. Noone forces us to this site. We come because we choose too.

DBStalk has the same type of relationship with D*. Those guys there should milk their sources for all they are worth.

What does irk me is the pissing contests that rad talks about.

Everytime there is a D* thread with compliments the E* stooges come a runnin and a hollering cutting it down.

LIKEWISE I read a few E* threads and I saw some D* stooges doing the same crap.

The choice is up to the consumer to come in here and wade through the stuff thats hyperbole and the stuff thats actual decent information.

IMHO wait 3 years and both companies will be neck and neck in what they offer. (Ofcourse D* will be slightly ahead!):D

It turns out I was justified in my suspicion.

Gavin Newsom somehow authorized the temporary move of the distribution date of the Winter blend to September 28th.

Does that raise, or lower, the overall price? Our State Government has been doing everything it can to minimize the impact of the current situation and put a freeze on the State Taxes on fuel sales at the pump. That's why we're still under $4.00/gal. while across the border in Michigan it's much higher.

Winter blend is reportedly 10-30 cents cheaper, but I would point out that prices have dropped as much as 62 cents at RP.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Every time my Dish contract comes up I weigh the options of keeping Dish or switch to streaming. Right now I can watch/record the OTA channels vis my HDHomerun. I also can stream CBS and NBC via the Paramount+ and Peacock apps. What I would need to find is how to watch the Food Network, HGTV, Syfy, USA, Hallmark channels, Great American Family, Lifetime channels plus a few more with an app or two. My current Dish bill is $118, so I should be able to get a few apps for a lot less.

Any suggestions? I would want the best picture quality and audio quality I could get.

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Ok checked it out and for some reason the web server (NGINX) tried starting before the DNS resolver fully loaded. This is why it worked when I rebooted the machine.

Thanks to ChatGPT it had me change the NGINX config to prevent this from happening again.

With that said I can't prevent the ISP from doing emergency upgrades which was the cause of all of this.

When walmart set a price...they weigh the container and the product...the product label only shows the weight of the product...I am sure if you brought your own plastic baggies to bring the product home you could get the cheaper price

I've been seeing this more and more on Amazon. Sometimes it seems there is no way they could have arrived at the number.

What rankles me even more is Costco changing units of measure between similar products, so you have to convert them to compare prices.

So even though DAZN keeps touting 'only way to see games' if you are a subscriber to Choice (like my stepdad) if an agreement is reached he can see the Wolfies on 668?
I know the Wild are in dispute and a slate is on 668-1.
