DIRECTV to Carry 11 HBO/Cinemax Channels In HD
The new channels will be added in September.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (June 12, 2007) -- DIRECTV plans to carry 11
HBO/Cinemax channels in High-Definition this September,
TVPredictions.com has learned.

The satcaster now offers just one HBO-branded channel in high-def --
HBO East. However, DIRECTV is scheduled to expand its HD lineup this
September after the launch of a new satellite in July.

With the additional capacity, DIRECTV in September will add dozens
of new high-def channels, including the following HBO/Cinemax
channels:

HBO West
HBO2 West
HBO2 East
HBO Family East
HBO Family West
HBO Latino
HBO Signature
Cinemax East
Cinemax West
MoreMax

Several of the HBO/Cinemax-branded channels are now not broadcasting
in high-def. But HBO announced today that it will make all 26 HBO
and Cinemax feeds available in High-Definition.

The network said it will begin rolling out the additional high-def
feeds later this year with all 26 completed by the end of the second
quarter of 2008.

DIRECTV spokesman Robert Mercer said today that the satcaster
plans "to duplicate all the (HBO/Cinemax) SD feeds we currently
carry in HD." But he would not comment further.

The 26 HBO channels that will be high-def by the second quarter of
2008 are:

HBO (East/West)
Cinemax (East/West)|
HBO2 (East/West)
MoreMAX (East/West)
HBO Signature (East/West)
ActionMAX (East/West)
HBO Comedy (East/West)
ThrillerMAX (East/West)
HBO Family (East/West)
WMAX (East)
HBO Zone (East/West)
@MAX (East)
HBO Latino (East/West)
5StarMAX (East)
OuterMAX. (East)

Where did you find this information? The articles make no mention of mpeg2 or mpeg4. Isn't all of D*'s CONUS HD broadcast in mpeg2?

Yes but several of us on this forum have done some side by side comparisons including Scott. I've also followed threads at avsforum and DBSTalk. The comparisons are done on local HD channels served via MPEG4 via the Spaceways and OTA channels. Additional comparisons were done between the CONUS MPEG2 sporting events versus the MPEG4 versions served via the RSN's. When side by side, the MPEG4 ones look better than the MPEG2 counterparts and for the locals, the MPEG4 versions look comparable to the OTA counterparts.

Of course this is all subjective to the naked eye and individuals doing the comparison but I know Scott is pretty honest and tries to do a fair job. I also trust my eyes as well. So you can believe it or not. The good news is all HD from Directv will be in MPEG4 going forward. Thats why most of us are very optimistic. :)

So you are saying that only those D* subs with mpeg4 capable receivers will be able to get the new HBO/Cinemax HD channels and all the other new HD channels. Are all D* HD receivers mpeg4 capable?

As defergie stated, only the HR20 and H20 are capable of MPEG4. They are also the only ones seeing 99 and 103 sats. So all new HD channels going forward will be MPEG4 and only using these receivers and a Slimline or AT9 5 LNB dish. So for folks that want to get all the new HD, you have to upgrade your dish and receivers.

I don't remember anything in the D* commercials or their PR releases about the need for new equipment to receive those 100 HD channels. DirecTV - Investor Relations - News Release

To receive DIRECTV's local HD programming, customers must have an H20 HD receiver or an HR20 DIRECTV Plus® HD DVR and a Ka/Ku band dish. DirecTV - Investor Relations - News Release
This is very interesting.

Also, the current MPEG2 CONUS HD channels might be mirrored for a time to allow users to get off existing hardware. But that will also have a shut off date. We just dont know the date yet if its around the new HD activation or after a grace period. My guess there will be a grace period to not tick off existing HD customers at the same time of all the new HD. It would double the chaos of folks looking to upgrade and going after new customers. Directv has said there will be plenty of units available but I think the bottle neck will be scheduling installs and/or fulfilling hardware orders.

I monitor the E* and D* boards. The discussion about the upcoming HD channels is very interesting on both boards. This was the first mention of mpeg4 only that I've seen for all the new HD channels on D*. D* does not put that requirement in their press releases about the national HD channels. It is only in the HD local releases. I doubt that most D* HD subs know about this new requirement.

BTW - I do not currently have HD but am extensively researching both D* & E*. The one dish option for D* is interesting, along with the new channels. My world does not revolve around sports so only the real national HD programming is of interest to me. The quality of the mpeg4 channels on D* is very attractive to me. If the quality that Scott describes stays with the new national HD offerings then D* might get my business. The mpeg2 HD quality on D* is not of interest to me. I've seen it and don't want it.

Wow, you've been out of the loop. ;) It's been discussed to death for the past couple years here and elsewhere. No biggy though.

It's been the plan for 3 years now. D* needed to launch new sats to get the bandwidth for new HD. Those happen to be KA sats and at 2 slots that D* wasn't using before (99 and 103).

Thus the need for the 5 LNB dish and new receivers which can see those sats.

And since D* would have to get HD customers new receivers anyway they decided to go with MPEG4 as well at the same time.

So you'll need an H20 or HR20 (DVR) receiver as those are the only 2 that are MPEG4 capable (and able to see 99 and 103).

ALL new HD is in MPEG4. All current MPEG2 HD will be converted to MPEG4 and shutdown as quickly as they can get a critical mass of MPEG4 receivers in current HD sub hands. Won't be all that difficult since they didn't have that many HD subs when they started this nearly 2 years ago when the H20 became the only HD receiver available to new subs (other then the HR10). And it's coming up on a year since only the HR20 has been available HD DVR to new HD subs.

So it's safe to say that the majority of HD subs they have today already have MPEG4 equipment and are ready to go. Light up all the new HD and the rest will quickly follow.

WCWW/25 CW South Bend and WBKP/5 CW Marquette are now testing on the stream server. These are both already available on satellite.

Now live in the satellite guide:
663-2 PISTONS (663-1 is likely being reserved for an overflow feed of Detroit Sportsnet, if there's a 2027 MLB season)
675 THUNDER
693 CLIPPERS

Wait…..
So even though DAZN keeps touting 'only way to see games' if you are a subscriber to Choice (like my stepdad) if an agreement is reached he can see the Wolfies on 668?
I know the Wild are in dispute and a slate is on 668-1.

They're finally live in the app's API, doing a check

PISTONS is not available in Detroit (WMYD/20), it is available in the rest of Michigan including Marquette who also gets the games on their MyNet station WJMN/3, along with the Toledo DMA and the northern portions of the South Bend and Fort Wayne DMAs.

THUNDER is available in OKC and Tulsa, so I wonder if DTV is just going to keep the OTA feeds of KSBI/52 and KQCW/19 and direct viewers to 675 for the rest of the games.
On stream it's in Choice for Oklahoma (inlcuding the Oklahoma portions of the Amarillo, Sherman-Ada, Wichita Falls-Lawton and Joplin DMAs) and Western Arkansas and requires Sports Pack for Nebraska, Kansas and Western Missouri, I'm not sure if it's the same for satellite.

It appears we are not getting both home & away feeds out of market on League Pass for these teams either…

I've been watching the Spurs home feed on channel 676-1 (was part time San Antonio specific feed) out of market with NBALP for YEARS on satellite (through the multiple iterations of Fox Sports SW, Bally Sports SW, FanDuel Sports SW) Looks like that will not happen unless a deal is reached with DAZN. I do see the placeholder channel on 680 if it happens.

I had one, the front panel lighting was cool, the menus were fresh and a lot more modern looking than the ViPs. However, it was very buggy and the Sling functionality just didn't work well - I think it was due to internet speeds at the time. I think I had to pay $40 for the Sling app on my phone iirc.

I had both the 921 and the 922. I used to buy them from DishDepot.com in Florida and trade in my older owned receiver towards the newest receiver. The 921 was a reboot receiver and the sling part was hit or miss. I look back on all those receivers I paid for over 25 years and I think it was just TV. If I had that money back now I would be lot richer. My Owned Hopper 3 is sitting in a drawer in my office not being used.
T
That was part of the Ergen scheme, to sell the product as well as the service. And who didn't want the best box?

Maybe they went to the hopper because they were running out of 3-digit model #s- 1022 would have been kinda clunky. Folks would have tried to say "one-thousand and twenty two" instead of "ten-twenty-two".

Like some say "two thousand and twenty six".

That's not really unusual. Cable companies like to the provide the box too. The phone company provided the phones in until the government forced them to allow third-party phones.

Just finished S2. Watching Gary Oldman as deshvilved, dejected MI-6 agent, Jackson Lamb, is one of the best things streaming right now. Already 2 more seasons in the works. HIGHLY recommended. And yes, Mick Jagger sings the theme.

I think this new season is a little too slow of a burn (as of ep #4, probably due to new show runner. However, I can't wait to find out what's up with Taverner!

Well, the season finale went balls to the wall. Non stop action and several twisted twists. Gary Oldman at his best. Very well written and executed. Tavener owes Jackson big time. Only "if" was Jack Lowden's (River) cliffhanger, especially admin-st the buzz that he is the next James Bond in waiting.

Planning to start the new season tonight. :)

On Tuesday, I recorded the first episodes of the new season's NCIS shows on CBS (Dish provided, not OTA). The new New York series and Origins will both do Auto Skip, but the original, now season 24 does not. What's stranger, when I do a search for NCIS, Origins and New York show the current recording and the next episode it will record, but the original show only shows the current recording and some other channel showing the very first episode of season one. It makes no sense. When I set up the timers, I was able to use search for Origins and New York, but for the original, I had to scroll ahead in the guide until last Tuesday when the show was airing. Then set the timer from there. You can see its timer type is DVR where the other two are Seek. What am I missing?
Thanks!

With both CBS and Fox autohop (as we know) is not enabled for a week..But after 24 hours if you mash the FF button until the red kangaroo shows up in the bottom right you wont overshoot the program. No need to try to figure how long the break is.

Yep. We do this all the time, but we use the 30-sec skip forward button until the red kangaroo shows up. Love this feature.

I'm a bit confused about the recording methods.
Do you havePrime Time Anytime enabled, by doing that you don't have to set recordings for Prime time programs on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox stations, it's done daily, 7 days a week.
And only 2 weeks recordings are saved, no deletions either.

Correct. If you enable PTAT, you don't have to set other timers for those programs. You can choose all of the 4 networks or as few as you want. You also can choose all 7 days or other options. However the programs will auto delete after 8 days unless you save that episode or save the whole series.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

$250 Million just for the rights to make something :eeek

The LOTR original series, a prequel to Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring, will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust; HarperCollins; and New Line Cinema, a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment, which produced the hugely successful LOTR movie franchise.

Set in Middle Earth, the television adaptation will explore new storylines preceding Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring.

Two friends recommended this show to me and I was hooked by the second ep of season 1! Production values are amazing and the episode runtimes are (typically) over an hour, which makes it really easy get hooked on the story because they're playing it out with movie-like pacing rather than a 34-40 minute episode. Acting and casting is really good as well!

I got started on season 2 a few nights ago and was wondering if anyone else is watching?

I am amazed you like it.

Made it thru season 1, thought it was terrible, but wanted to give it a chance, made it to halfway on Season 2, Episode 2, just could not take it anymore.

It like they took the worse Lord of the Rings fan-fiction off the internet and made it into a TV Series.

Yes, the production values are high, but that does not make it into a good series.

They're taking a lot of this from The Silmarillion, of which I'm not quite a third of the way through yet, and sure, they've invented some new people, places and situations, but it's still (IMHO) a really good prequel to LOTR. Having only just started season 2, I'm still enjoying it quite a bit. I'm really not seeing the fan-fic angle in it. If season 2 proves to be as enjoyable as season 1 was for me, I'd sure like to see a 3rd season.
